# 字典網站 Dictionary.com   宣佈「Pandemic」成 2020 年度字詞

字典網站 Dictionary.com 在每年年末前，都會宣佈該年的年度字詞（Word of the Year），他們會嘗試以一個單字去為該年作總結。雖然 YouTube 早前宣佈取消類似的 Rewind 回顧活動，但 Dictionary.com 未有跟隨，堅持公佈年度字詞的傳統。

Dictionary.com 表示人們在 2020 年面對公共衛生危機、經濟下滑、種族不公、政治分歧、虛假資訊氾濫和氣候災難等挑戰，經過細心考慮之後，他們挑選了 Pandemic（全球大流行）成為 2020 年度字詞。武漢肺炎肆虐導致全球超過 6 千萬人確診，奪去的人命過百萬，今年 3 月 11 日世界衛生組織將武漢肺炎界定為 Pandemic，當時世衛幹事長譚德塞強調使用 Pandemic 這個詞語並非輕率的決定，世衛的宣佈亦是 Pandemic 成為 2020 年度字詞的轉捩點。

當時因武漢肺炎而死亡數字不到 4,300 人，但自從世衛將疫情定性為 Pandemic，利用 Dictionary.com 搜尋的數量急升，比起 2019 年上升了 13,575%。其他搜尋量激增的字詞大多與疫情有關，包括 Asymptomatic、Coronavirus、 Furlough、Quarantine 和 Sanitizer 等（無症狀、冠狀病毒、休假、檢疫和消毒），但都不及 Pandemic 的搜尋量大。
