狻猊是狮子的别称，凶猛能食虎豹。而在神话传说中，狻猊是龙生九子之一，排行第五（一说第八）. 形如狮，平生喜静不喜动，好坐，又喜欢烟火。 佛主见它有耐心，便收在胯下当了坐骑，所以形象一般出现在佛座、香炉上，随之吞烟吐雾。 “火眼狻猊”并不是狻猊，而是一种怪兽。根据明代董斯张《吹景集》记载. 它有一个头，两个身子，两只尾巴，八只脚，耳朵和尾巴有些像猪，头像老虎，毛像兔子，尾巴的细毛又有点像人的头发. 头宽大约有六寸，身长大约是头宽的两倍。它的出现是战乱的预兆。
