The Great Mosque of Córdoba in Spain, with its forest of columns and double arches, exemplifies the innovative use of space and light in Islamic architecture. The mosque’s mihrab (prayer niche) is richly decorated with intricate mosaics and calligraphy, showcasing the artistry and craftsmanship of Islamic design.  The Taj Mahal in India is another masterpiece of Islamic architecture. This mausoleum, built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, features a symmetrical layout, a white marble façade adorned with intricate inlay work, and a central dome flanked by four minarets. The building’s reflective pools and lush gardens create a sense of tranquility and beauty.  Islamic architecture also includes a variety of building types, such as madrasas (educational institutions), caravanserais (roadside inns), and palaces. The Alhambra in Spain, with its ornate courtyards, fountains, and stucco work, is a prime example of Islamic palace architecture.  The principles of Islamic architecture, including the use of geometric patterns, calligraphy, and a focus on symmetry and harmony, continue to influence contemporary architectural design worldwide.
