# JAXA

The **Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency** (**JAXA**) (国立研究開発法人宇宙航空研究開発機構, _Kokuritsu-kenkyū-kaihatsu-hōjin Uchū Kōkū Kenkyū Kaihatsu Kikō_, lit. '[National Research and Development Agency](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_National_Research_and_Development_Agencies) Aerospace Research and Development Organisation') is the [Japanese](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan) national [air](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeronautics) and [space agency](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_agency). Through the merger of three previously independent organizations, JAXA was formed on 1 October 2003. JAXA is responsible for research, technology development and launch of [satellites](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite) into [orbit](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geocentric_orbit), and is involved in many more advanced missions such as [asteroid](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteroid) exploration and possible human [exploration of the Moon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploration_of_the_Moon).[\[2\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JAXA#cite_note-2) Its motto is _One JAXA_[\[3\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JAXA#cite_note-3) and its corporate slogan is _Explore to Realize_ (formerly _Reaching for the skies, exploring space_).[\[4\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JAXA#cite_note-4)
