Not over months.

In _under 30 days_.

No bug. No hack.
Just a brutal reminder:

**Web3 doesn’t have a growth problem.
It has a retention problem.**

🧵 A masterclass in user _stickiness_ for Web3 founders:

* * *

**2/**
The graveyard keeps growing:

→ friendtech: 200k → 500 DAU
→ banana gun: -80% volume
→ virtuals: $7.8M → $32K in fees
→ farcaster: back to 30k daily users
→ Scroll, Blast, StarkNet, Pumpdotfun… similar trend.

It’s not just a downturn.

It’s _unsustainable retention design_.

* * *

**3/** The hard truth:

→ Airdrops ≠ Loyalty
→ Daily Check-ins ≠ Habit
→ Yield Farms ≠ Product
→ Vanity Metrics ≠ Community

If you build for speculators, don’t be shocked when they _speculate elsewhere_.

* * *

**4/** Retention is not a feature. It’s a **system**.

→ Trigger
→ Action
→ Reward
→ Investment

This is the Hooked Model by Nir Eyal.

Web2 mastered this.
Web3? Still chasing "hype".

Let’s fix that 👇

* * *

**5/** Step 1: Define Your Keystone Action

What should your ideal user do _repeatedly_?

Examples:
→ Swap
→ Stake
→ Share
→ Mint
→ Join

Now reverse engineer your UX, incentives, and UI to _make that action addictive_.

* * *

**6/** Step 2: Build the Habit Loop

Take Farcaster for example:

→ Trigger: Mention / Frame / Notification
→ Action: User replies
→ Reward: Replies, likes, follows
→ Investment: User posts back

Each loop makes the user more likely to return.

Loops > LTV.

* * *

**7/** Metrics That Matter:

You don’t need dashboards full of noise.

Just start with:

→ Day 1 / 7 / 30 retention
→ Power user curve
→ Weekly active users (WAU)
→ Cohort retention
→ WAU/MAU ratio

Chase these, not Discord pings.

* * *

**8/** Layered Retention Framework:

✅ Core Retention → the product is useful
✅ Social Retention → the product is shared
✅ Emotional Retention → the product feels personal

Most Web3 apps don’t even have **one**.
Winners have **all three**.

* * *

**9/**
🧠 Lesson: Gamification is a tool, not a goal.

Don’t reward users for _checking in_.
Reward them for creating _value_.

Use:
→ Progress bars
→ Levels
→ Unlocks
→ Badges
→ Public milestones

Not just coins and points.

* * *

**10/** Real Tools for Real Builders

Plug these into your stack:

→ Push / XMTP – re-engagement
→ Dune / [Loops.so](http://Loops.so) – analytics
→ Layer3 / Highlight – track user quests
→ [Paragraph.xyz](http://Paragraph.xyz) – content loops
→ [Guild.xyz](http://Guild.xyz) – gated communities
→ [Notify.xyz](http://Notify.xyz) – wallet-native alerts

Infra exists. Use it smartly.

* * *

**11/** Steal From Web2 (they already solved this)

→ Duolingo: Streaks + XP
→ Discord: Persistent identity
→ TikTok: Variable rewards
→ Notion: Collaborative creation
→ Reddit: Karma + community

Translate these _mechanics_ into your dApp.

* * *

**12/** 5 Retention Mistakes Founders Still Make:

1. Launching without clear user action

2.  Measuring hype, not habit

3. Building too much, too fast

4.  No re-engagement loop

5. Optimizing for new users, ignoring old

Fix these and your app _lives_.

* * *

**13/**
Final story:

A founder I advised had 300 DAU. Not impressive.

But 65% of them came _daily_, without any incentives.

No airdrops. No campaigns.
Just value, loop, habit.

That founder didn’t go viral.
They got acquired.

* * *

**14/**
If you’re building in Web3 — don’t chase crowds.
Design habits.

You don’t need 100K users.
You need:

→ 100 who return 10x
→ 10 who spread the word
→ 1 loop that hooks

That’s how you **outlive the hype**.

→ Habit templates
→ Metric dashboards
→ UX examples
→ Real product loops
→ Plug-and-play growth systems
