# A Better World - Part 1

If you are satisfied with the way things are right now, why bother? Why not dream of a better world, where things go much smoother, bringing less conflicts, more creativity, less pain? Not saying that we can eliminate pain altogether, pain is a human emotion and it is part of our existence. But we can eliminate unnecessary pain, unnecessary friction and frustration. When things are not how we want them to be, we can either be indifferent to the possibility, or we can pull it more towards us. At least to give it a try. Everything could be better, from small things to big things. Take the experience of booking a holiday. It is much better than it used to be 10-20 years ago. There are more options now. But it is also quite a hassle, stressful experience. Why isn’t it easier to find the perfect location? Why isn’t there a better way to plan a trip holistically, and not have to sort out the complex puzzle by yourself? A transparent, clear, enjoyable experience of booking your next holiday. Where you’re not bombarded with ads, choices you don’t need and juggling through tens of opened tabs. What about the Internet? It’s doing quite ok. But can it be better? Can it be faster, more decentralized, more free, more organized? I bet you! Why does your IP address have to tell so much about you? Why can’t IP addresses be more private, more secure, and in the same time, providing you with stable access? Why do certain big companies have to decide how you get access to the Internet and what you’re allowed to see or not? It’s clearly far from perfect? Why does the information need to be scattered and so hard to find? I mean Google is great, helps a lot, but it is one company that we need to rely on instead of the helpfulness and organization emerging from the inherent structure of the information. Why can’t people collaborate more? What are the barriers? Education, culture, preferences, lack of incentives or conflicting interests? We can address each one of these and it will automatically enable more collaboration, more empathy, fewer misunderstandings and more happiness. We can address lack of resources and waste in one go, solving more of these problems. It seems nonsensical that waste and shortage are the reasons for so much unhappiness in the world. What’s preventing faster technological advances? Is it the complexity of the science? I doubt that’s the full picture. Funding and collaboration play a great role in this. What could these technological advantages do for our society, for the world in general? A great deal! Call me naive, call me day dreamer, tell me that I need to do better things with my life. But this is my big dream, a better world… One step at a time. A collective dream I am sure that I am not the only one who wants to bring change to this world. Maybe I am one of the few who still naively believe that change is possible, and we should pursue it. I don’t know the reason, but the dream seems scattered and the voices are weak. Perhaps everyday life gets in the way of dreaming more. Perhaps failure takes its toll and we feel overwhelmed by the forces that push the world towards misalignment. Obstacles feel imminent and entropy has its way of undoing some of the hard work we put in achieving this big dream. Having a dream that expands the whole humanity is also a daunting task. How can we possibly coordinate millions of individuals across the world, unite them in one voice and together solve the problems that are fuel to our nightmares? To find the common thread, the core of our troubled existence, is not an easy search. But when we do manage to unite around this dream, the possibility could become real. It’s a matter of scaling We can successfully gather a limited group of people around a smaller problem. Look at all the companies out there. Their single purpose is to address and solve one problem. Some of them do it very successfully. Not only generate value through income, but do end up solving at least part of the problem they set off on solving. The problem is that most companies stop there, they turn their searching lights off and only look inwards. There isn’t a stopper for greed and fear of loss. Why collaborate when we can have it all for ourselves? Why give further knowledge and support to others who try to solve similar problems? Going from the individualistic effort of companies to a world-wide effort is going to need to break down the barriers for inter-company collaboration. Solving this problem will solve the problem of scaling our dream. Competition is good, to foster motivation. “I can be the first to get there”. But competition can also be about collaboration, “I can be the first to give to others”. We need to be better at growing the value of collaboration, of offering the fruits of your work to others. But there can be barriers of trust. Can I be sure that my work will be appreciated, respected? This works well for an individual in a company setting, where you offer your work in exchange for appreciation, compensation and belonging to a group with shared goals. But currently it does not translate to how companies see the rest of the world. This “winner takes all” mentality creates a rift between companies and the rest of the world. It promotes keeping secrets, focus on profits and high levels of competition. Reputation becomes this thing that needs to be protected at all costs, as for the company it is a matter of prospering or demise. But a company is made of people. And these people can actually be the voice that needs to be heard to create a change. When a great solution is discovered, would each individual vote for keeping it a secret and profiting ad infinitum from it? Or would they want to share, get recognition and at the same time help others that need that solution? If they are in fear of losing their livelihood, perhaps not. Maybe that’s what we need to change. We should protect the voices from within companies. The voices that collectively can dream bigger. I will write the rest of this in bursts, one part at a time. The story may reshape itself and the ideas may flow differently, it’s part of the process! Let’s find out together.
