Smartness</h2><p>&quot;Smart&quot;: the psychology concept of intelligence - an amalgamation of cognitive capacities (Sternberg, 2002).</p><p>Smart 算是比较泛的一个词汇，中文的“聪明”算是比较好对应的翻译。但是，smart 不是一个夸人的好词汇，甚至会起反效果。</p><h3 id="h-11" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">1.1 为什么你不应该夸人聪明？</h3><p>反效果归纳起来就是 Self-Defeat (Sternberg, 2002)：“聪明人”太在意让自己看起来“聪明”了，以至于他们花大量时间精力来粉饰和维持自己的“聪明”，从而不敢接受收获更大的挑战 (Dweck &amp; Leggett, 1988; Stone &amp; Dweck, 1998)。他们把“聪明”归类于一种固定特征，而非一个逐渐学习成长的过程 (Sternberg, 2002)。</p><p>Berglas (1990) 的 Self-Handicapping 的解释算是比较充分的：“聪明人”倾向于逃避做那些看起来比较低能的事情，尽管这样会损害他们最终的表现。他们更在意看起来聪明而不是完成某件事情。</p><h3 id="h-12-book-smart-vs-street-smart" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">1.2 Book Smart vs Street Smart</h3><p>在英文语境中有 Book Smart 和 Street Smart 两种：</p><figure float="none" data-type="figure" class="img-center" style="max-width: null;"><img class="hide-figcaption"></figcaption></figure><p>所以，当我们在探讨“聪明”的时候，我们需要注意我们讨论的是哪种“聪明”。</p><p>如果我们要的是 Book Smart，特别当管理人是 Book Smart 的时候，需要警惕：</p><ul><li><p>Acquisition bias（信息在获取过程中会出现的偏差）</p></li><li><p>Processing bias（信息在处理过程中会出现的偏差）</p></li><li><p>Response bias（信息在应对过程中会出现的偏差）</p></li></ul><p>而 Street Smart，就与之后提到的 Wisdom 相关。</p><p><em>总结：以后我们看谁不顺眼，就夸他聪明。</em></p><h2 id="h-2-intelligence" class="text-3xl font-header !mt-8 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">2. Intelligence</h2><p>Psychologists defined intelligence as the &quot;ability to understand complex ideas, to adapt effectively to the environment, to learn from experience, to engage in various forms of reasoning, and to overcome obstacles by taking thought.&quot; (Neisser et al., 1996, p.77)</p><p>心理学家对 intelligence 的定义是：a) 理解复杂概念的能力，b) 能有效适应环境，c) 从经验中学习，d) 参与各种逻辑论证，e) 通过思考来跨越障碍 (Neisser et al., 1996, p.77)。</p><p>Intelligent 在中文没有一个很好的翻译，暂且认为是介于 smart 和 wise 中间的过度。可见，这是一个复杂又难以定性的概念。</p><h3 id="h-21-fixed-intelligence-vs-malleable-intelligence" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">2.1 Fixed intelligence vs Malleable intelligence</h3><p>这部分的论证与前面 Smartness 中的 Self-Defeat 相关——当人们认为 intelligence 是固定时，便几乎不可能进步，甚至会退步。</p><p>其中最关键的是，intelligence 本身究竟是固定的还是可塑的不重要，最重要的是人们的 belief <em>（可以理解为人们的信念，或者人们对其的看法）</em> (Hong et al., 1999)。</p><p>Malleable intelligence 不单帮助人们提高面对困境时的表现，还提高他们的成绩和生活满意度 (Aronson, 1998; Aronson &amp; Fried 1998)，同时更愿意接受新的挑战 (Dweck, 1999)。更为重要的是，当我们称赞他人的努力而非成绩时，将会潜移默化地使人相信 malleable intelligence (Mueller &amp; Dweck, 1998)。<em>注：“行”（努力）在这里已经参与进来了，二者无法独立切割地来看待。</em></p><h3 id="h-22-levels-of-analysis" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">2.2 Levels of analysis</h3><p>心理学家概括性地将人类的认知分成数层，这里参考最右边的一列。</p><figure float="none" data-type="figure" class="img-center" style="max-width: &amp; Chater, 1995; Pylyshyn, 1984; Sterelny,1990)</figcaption></figure><p>所谓的“系统一”——即人类认知的本能，可以归为 Biological level。而 Intelligence，是属于 Algorithmic level 的范畴，Wisdom 则是 Intentional level 的。这将为接下来的阐述做铺垫。</p><figure float="none" data-type="figure" class="img-center" style="max-width: null;"><img class="hide-figcaption"></figcaption></figure><h3 id="h-23-cognitive-capacities" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">2.3 Cognitive Capacities</h3><p>对大众来说，智商测验毫无用处。在没有其它智力指标的参照下，高智商并不代表未来人生有更多优势 (Sternberg, 2002)。智商得分与其它早期表现预测指标在对未来表现预期上参考意义不大 (Hulin, Henry, &amp; Noon, 1990)。</p><p><em>所以，智商测验测的是什么？</em></p><p>Cognitive capacities——符合 IQ 测验的认知能力 (Baron, 1985, 1988)，其中包括：感知速度、辨别精度、工作记忆容量，和从长期记忆中提取信息的效率(Ackerman, Kyllonen, &amp; Richards 1999; Carpenter, Just, &amp; Shell 1990; Deary &amp; Stough 1996; Engle et al. 1999; Fry &amp; Hale 1996; Hunt 1978,1987; Lohman 1989; Sternberg 1982; Vernon 1991, 1993)。</p><p>也就是 Baltes (1987) 提到的 &quot;mechanics of intelligence&quot;。Cognitive capacities 就是Algorithmic level 的部分。<em>IQ 测的其实是高效的工人。</em></p><p>根据 Baron (1985) 的设想，cognitive capacities 不能通过短期的责备或指示来提升，而是受长期练习的影响。</p><p>根据众多心理学家的拆解，与 cognitive capacities 相对应的是 thinking dispositions，这个留到下面讨论。</p><h1 id="h-b" class="text-4xl font-header !mt-8 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">B. 什么是行？</h1><p>&quot;It seems right to say that our knowing is in our action.&quot; (Schon, 1983, p. 49)</p><h2 id="h-3-tacit-knowledge" class="text-3xl font-header !mt-8 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">3. Tacit Knowledge</h2><p>前面已经多多少少提到了“行”，这里主要围绕着 tacit knowledge 展开讨论。</p><h3 id="h-31-tacit-knowledge" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">3.1 何为 Tacit Knowledge?</h3><p>Tacit knowledge: the practical know-how that rarely is described formally or taught directly (Wagner, 1987).</p><p>Tacit knowledge 主要的研究者为 Wagner, Sternberg 和他们的同事们。概括地来说，Tacit knowledge 包括：</p><ul><li><p>Practical know-how</p></li><li><p>Domain-specific</p></li><li><p>Become clear from countless studies of problem solving</p></li><li><p>Extraordinarily powerful for successful problem solving</p></li></ul><p>(Sternberg &amp; Horvath, 1999; Sternberg et al., 1995;Wagner, 1987; Wagner &amp; Sternberg, 1985)</p><p>Tacit knowledge 可以理解为隐性知识，或潜规则。这是非明面上的知识/道理，是通过大量实操获得的，是有领域局限性的，同时是非常强大的解决问题的能力。</p><p>Tacit knowledge 可以：a) 识别专家和新手；b) 预测管理层表现；c) 排除智商和性格因素预测个人在现实世界的表现。另外，笼统地看，Tacit knowledge 在职业领域中有延伸性和扩展性 (Sternberg, 2002)。</p><h3 id="h-32-tacit-knowledge" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">3.2 Tacit Knowledge 的特点</h3><ul><li><p>行动导向的知识，能帮助个人达成个人目标，通常不通过他人的直接帮助获得 (Sternberg et al., 1995; Sternberg et al., 2000)</p></li><li><p>&quot;Knowing how&quot; 而非&quot;knowing that&quot; (Ryle, 1949)</p></li><li><p>因地制宜，权变 (Sternberg, 2002)</p></li><li><p>与环境没有太大关系，甚至有的组织机构会打压 (Sternberg, 2002)</p></li><li><p>理想状态下，能够通过他人指引点拨获取 (Sternberg, 2002)</p></li><li><p>基本上只能通过个人实操来获取，而非具体授业 (Sternberg, 2002)</p></li></ul><h3 id="h-33-tacit-knowledge" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">3.3 如何获得 Tacit Knowledge?</h3><p>基本上就是 Ericsson et al. (1993) 提出的“刻意练习”：</p><ol><li><p>辛勤耕耘——数载高强度练习</p></li><li><p>刻意练习——有针对性地高强度训练</p></li><li><p>高强度的投入，持续的斗志和资源</p></li></ol><p>然而在现实中，很少人能够经常获得及时反馈和获得有针对性的训练。大部分人都只能获得年度的笼统反馈。而通常表现的提升是通过非正式的个人经验获得的 (Wagner, 1991)。</p><h3 id="h-34-tacit-knowledge" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">3.4 什么样的人无法获得 Tacit Knowledge?</h3><p>“拥有权力的人”，因为他们容易有：omniscience, omnipotence, invulnerability 的感觉。</p><p>a) Omniscience（全知）:</p><ul><li><p>当权者可以通过掌握信息渠道让别人为他获取信息</p></li><li><p>下属又仰视当权者，将其视为全知者（Janis (1972) 阐述了 victims of groupthink），使得当权者进一步觉得自己无所不知</p></li></ul><p>b) Omnipotent（全能）:</p><ul><li><p>当权者自认可以做很多事情，就容易过度简化 (overgeneralize)，并误以为自己可以涉猎多领域</p></li></ul><p>c) Invulnerability（无法伤害的）:</p><ul><li><p>当权者受大众环绕，尤其是被谄媚者包围</p></li></ul><p>以上概括自 Sternberg (2002) 的论述。<em>笔者按：这里的“权力拥有者”是一个抽象的概念。</em></p><h3 id="h-35-tacit-knowledge" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">3.5 拥有 Tacit Knowledge 之后会如何？</h3><p>Patel, Arocha, &amp; Kaufman (1999) 认为，他们在解决问题的表现上：</p><ol><li><p>Experts spend proportionally more time assessing the problem and less time solving it, compared to novices who do just the opposite</p></li><li><p>Experts recognize and categorize problems on the basis of deeper principles, whereas novices recognize and categorize problems on the basis of surface features</p></li><li><p>Experts are able to perceive large patterns of information quickly</p></li><li><p>Experts have superior memory, both short and long-term, for problem-relevant information</p></li></ol><p>也就是说，他们在自己特定专业领域内，会有更强的评估能力，分类能力，感知能力和记忆能力</p><h2 id="h-4-wisdom" class="text-3xl font-header !mt-8 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">4. Wisdom</h2><p>Wisdom is defined as &quot;the application of tacit knowledge as guided by values toward the achievement of a common good, through a balance among intrapersonal, interpersonal, and extrapersonal interests of the short and long term, in order to achieve a balance among 1) adaptation to existing environments, 2) shaping of existing environments, and 3) selection of new environments.&quot; (Sternberg, 2002, p. 236)</p><p>Wisdom 的翻译是“智慧”，我觉得没有太大异议。Sternberg (2002) 的定义中提到了 tacit knowledge 的运用，可见“智慧”中含有着“知行合一”。</p><p>Wisdom 的目的是为了平衡：1) 在当前环境中的适应能力，2) 改变当前环境，3) 选择新环境，这三者。</p><p><em>也就是说，智慧不单单是自我利益的最大化，而是在不同利益中取得平衡。</em></p><p><em>智慧的目的是获得共赢，更好的理解应该是帕雷托最优（Pareto optimality）。损人利己的事，便不属于智慧的范畴。然而，自我利益最大化，以及损人利己，都是属于 practical intelligence 的范畴。也就是说，一个人在局部操作上可能很 intelligent，但在大局上却是缺少智慧的。</em></p><p><em>巴菲特是个有智慧的老人，因为他在投资可口可乐的同时，给世界散布了快乐 :)</em></p><h3 id="h-41" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">4.1 智慧是如何形成的？</h3><p>Sternberg (1985) 给了一个很主观的概念——&quot;metacomponents&quot; of thought:</p><ul><li><p>Recognizing the existence of a problem 识别问题的存在</p></li><li><p>Defining the nature of the problem 给问题定性</p></li><li><p>Representing information about the problem 用信息表达问题</p></li><li><p>Formulating a strategy for solving the problem提供解决问题的公式</p></li><li><p>Allocating resources to the solution of a problem 为解决问题分配资源</p></li><li><p>Monitoring one&apos;s solution of the problem 监管问题的解决过程</p></li><li><p>Evaluating feedback regarding that solution critical thinking（批判性思维）的能力。</em></p><p><em>批判性思维是个用来拓展全局观的思维工具，还需要结合 tacit knowledge 带来的执行能力，才能做到“知行合一”。只有在批判性思维带来了全局观，从而做出了帕累托最优解，我们才能说批判性思维带来了智慧。</em></p><h3 id="h-43" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">4.3 何为批判性思维？</h3><p>简单来说，批判性思维是一种不受预设立场和主观偏见干扰，用逻辑推断进行评估的能力。</p><p>Critical thinking: &quot;The importance of the ability to evaluate arguments and evidence in a way that is not contaminated by one&apos;s prior beliefs.&quot; (Sternberg, 2002, p. 132)</p><p>Norris and Ennis (1989, p. 12): &quot;reason from starting points with which they disagree without letting the disagreement interfere with their reasoning&quot;.</p><p>Nickerson (1987, p. 30): recognize &quot;the fallibility of one&apos;s own opinions, the probability of bias in those opinions, and the danger of differentially weighting evidence according to personal preferences&quot;.</p><p>The importance of detaching one&apos;s own beliefs from the process of argument evaluation (Baron 1991, 1995; Brenner, Koehler, &amp;Tversky 1996; Kardash &amp; Scholes 1996; Klaczynski &amp; Gordon 1996; Klaczynski et al. 1997; Kuhn 1991, 1993; Perkins 1985; Stanovich &amp; West1997; Voss, Perkins, &amp; Segal 1991).</p><h3 id="h-44-thinking-dispositions" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">4.4 何为 Thinking Dispositions？</h3><p>Thinking dispositions: &quot;relate to the adequacy of belief formation and decision making&quot; (Sternberg, 2002, p. 130).</p><p>Thinking dispositions 与信念形成和决策能力相关。</p><p>比如，&quot;the disposition to weigh new evidence against a favored belief heavily (or lightly), the disposition to spend a great deal of time (or very little) on a problem before giving up, or the disposition to weigh heavily the opinions of others in forming one&apos;s own.&quot; (Baron, 1985, p.15)</p><p>&quot;Although you cannot improve working memory by instruction, you can tell someone to spend more time on problems before she gives up, and if she is so inclined, she can do what you say.&quot; (Baron, 1985, p.15)</p><p>每个人对新的事件会有个体上个人喜好的差异、耗时的差异、面对他人看法的差异。Thinking dispositions 判断这个人能否很好地平衡并客观地接受信息。</p><p>Thinking dispositions 是用来测量 Intentional level 的指标。个体在 critical thinking 上的差异，就算是排除认知能力上的差异后，也可以通过 thinking dispositions 来预测 (Sternberg, 2002)。</p><p>另外，Thinking dispositions 的能力差异不受语言能力和词汇影响 (Sternberg, 2002)。</p><p>也就是说，一个高 thinking dispositions 的人，应该是 &quot;one who values having an accurate belief forming system more than she values holding onto her current beliefs&quot;，而非 &quot;one who sees retaining current beliefs is an important goal&quot; (Sternberg, 2002, p. 134).</p><h3 id="h-45" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">4.5 为什么你需要正确的信念?</h3><p>心理学家发现人们的判断更容易受到非客观理性信息的影响，而非求证于更具有代表性的统计数字：</p><p>Nisbett and Ross (1980) have demonstrated how human judgment is overly influenced by vivid but unrepresentative personal and testimonial evidence and is underinfluenced by more representative and diagnostic statistical information.</p><p>Griffin and Tversky (1991, p. 431-432) argue, &quot;the tendency to prefer an individual or &apos;inside&apos; view rather than a statistical or &apos;outside&apos; view represents one of the major departures of intuitive judgment from normative theory&quot;.</p><p>一个健全的信念体系能带来正确的世界观，让所有接收到的信息都能更好地构建新的认知，而非歪曲认知：</p><p>Hilary Kornblith (1993, p. 105): &quot;Mistaken beliefs will, as a result of belief perseverance, taint our perception of new data. …If, overall, our belief-generating mechanisms give us a fairly accurate picture of the world, then the phenomenon of belief perseverance may do more to inform our understanding than it does to distort it.&quot;</p><p>Alloy &amp; Tabachnik (1984) 提出了 Knowledge Projection Tendency 的概念：人的预期会影响新信息的吸收——如果预期是正确的，他将更容易和快速接受新的正确信息；如果预期是错误的，正确信息的接收将被延迟。从而引申出了 Knowledge Isolation: 拥有错误信念的人，将会用更多错误的信息来巩固自己错误的信念。最终，那些拥有正确信念（即预期）的人将汇聚在一起，而那些拥有错误信念的人将被逐渐隔离和排斥。</p><p>另外，Stanovich (1986) 证明了马太效应存在于知识积累中。</p><h3 id="h-46" class="text-2xl font-header !mt-6 !mb-4 first:!mt-0 first:!mb-0">4.6 如何获得正确的信念？</h3><p>Baron (1993b) 发现拥有活跃的开放性思维的人的判断，更容易依据统计证据而非供述证据。</p><p>在 Staudinger, Lopez, &amp; Baltes (1997) 的实验中，他们发现大五人格 (Five-Factor Model) 中的开放性 (Openness) 是五个特征中唯一与智慧相关联的。</p><p>我们与生俱来就容易在认知过程中携带偏见，其中包括那些使用数据研究偏见的研究员：</p><p>On one hand, we have come to believe that people are unable to follow the very basic axioms of probability theory (Dawes, 1998; Plous, 1993) and elementary first order logic in making judgments about uncertain situations and predicaments (Nisbett &amp; Ross, 1980). On the other hand, we know that the scientists who carry out the experiments and interpret the data are themselves just as prone to making the same cognitive &quot;errors&quot; that their participants are purported to make (Tversky learning.</p><p>当与人交谈或授业时，应多用条件定式传达信息，不仅能激发信息接收的兴趣，同时也能提高热情。</p><p>自孩童起，人类学习大部分东西都是在无语境、纯粹的情况下，也对此从不怀疑。这就是为什么我们经常处于错误中却很少能醒悟过来。尤其是当信息是被 authority
