I have been into personal development after reading The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck by Mark Manson after college.

Personal development involves accounting for one or more areas of your life and assessing how these parts could be improved.

You might have a dream or ideal lifestyle in mind, and based on this, you can set goals.

From these goals, you should set up a system of habits and actions that you'll execute to bring you closer to your goal.

Here goes:

1. Understanding the Why

The first step is to understand why you want to build this habit. Make it explicit what function it serves in your life and whether you enjoy the process itself rather than just the result (goal).

2. Starting small

When starting a new habit, start small. The first step is to show up every day, not change your world on day 1. Don’t set up ten habits at once with maximum difficulty.

Example: I will put on my running shoes. (seriously)

3. Environment design

Set up your environment so engaging in this habit is effortless.

For example, prepare your running shoes and clothes and put them somewhere the night before.

4. Habit Stacking/Anchoring

Another way of building a new habit is stacking/anchoring it to an existing one.

Example: "After brushing my teeth, I will put on my shoes and go for a run.”

5. Get Back on Track!

If you miss one day, it's fine—life happens! But try not to miss two days in a row; otherwise, you will lose momentum quite quickly.

Use this framework to set up any new habits.

How internal DevX can save time, energy, money and 10x dev productivity.

Prioritize internal developer experience.

As a startup, your number one priority is to build and distribute the best product experience possible while constrained by time and money.

A large chunk of the resources is spent on developers, as Web3 companies are technical.

As a result, spending time considering how tooling and infrastructure can improve developer experience internally is a high-leverage task.

There are tradeoffs when making decisions, and it is essential to fully grasp the immediate and future consequences.

Some of the ways this can be done:

Leverage simple, well-maintained tooling that is effortless to set up, use, and maintain for non-core parts of the product. There is no need to recreate the wheel. Also, the wrangling with the tooling should be minimal. If you decide to write custom code, you must maintain this.

If you are a leader or manager, listen to your IC (independent contributors) opinions. They will have the best feel for any friction points.

If you are an individual, suggest alternative solutions to your manager. If you believe you’ve found a better one-do your best to grasp the tradeoffs and make sure your case is well presented.

Internal developer experience tends to bleed out and impact downstream integrations. If the core of your product isn't frictionless to use (smart contracts in Web3), this tends to bleed to downstream tooling-you have to build more peripheral contracts, which add complexity and maintenance costs.

An environment with excellent DX allows devs to focus their energy on solving challenging problems, leading to less buggy code, happier devs, and lower maintenance costs.

This will save time and money, as dev hours are money. There will also be a probabilistic reduction in bugs and maintainability, which means everyone in the org can focus more on building than maintaining, thus 10xing productivity.

Like most beginners, I made many mistakes when I first started working as a Web3 developer in the Crypto industry.

But this was the biggest one by far:

Not switching lanes quickly enough.

Here's what happened:

When I first decided to join the Web3 industry as a developer, I followed a fairly traditional path: CryptoZombies and building to a job.

The thought of being able to program money in a cutting-edge industry was exciting, but as a beginner, you don't know what you don't know.

However, I had not learned that 95% of the job was writing tests.

Some people love and enjoy this grind, but not me.

Once you’ve learned the 20% that yields 80% of the results, there’s little leverage in this type of task.

But it's also worth acknowledging that making this mistake led to much growth.

First, my Anterior Mid-Cingulate Cortex (aMCC) has been thoroughly developed. This is the willpower center of the brain, and it grows when doing undesirable things.

Secondly, this initial drive propelled me into the Web3 space head-first, where I attended conferences and met really cool people.

Thirdly, I have a far better understanding of the different parts of a Web3 company and have developed the skills to build across the stack: smart contracts, subgraph, backend, and frontend.

Finally, and most importantly, I learned a lot about myself, including where my strengths and weaknesses lie, what gets me excited in the morning, and what drains my energy.

It's obvious, but do more of what excites you and less of what drains you.

This is why I encourage everyone to see their mistakes (and "failures") as necessary steps along the path.

There is always a lesson to be learned.

Whatever it is, people will often "prepare" but never actually do the thing.

People are often held back by fear of failure or judgment, but the truth is nobody cares at the start because you suck at the beginning.

The first step is to do it.

If it's stand-up comedy, write down some jokes and perform at an open mic.

Action > Strategy at this stage.

Put down the book/article/video and just fucking start.

Get Good

Congrats! You've surpassed the most challenging stage and are in motion. It is time to level up and focus on improving.

So, start executing with optimization: finding the highest-leverage areas (high impact, low effort) to improve.

This is the stage people usually mistakenly start with. But, if you've never performed a comedy set, optimizing more won't help as you lack experience and context.

Get Smart

This is the final boss. You are good at whatever you set out to do but want to scale.

This is the stage where Strategy > Action; you need to take a step back, analyze your process critically from start to finish, and see how you can systematize it.

You want to free up your time and energy for the things only you can do.

I am applying this approach to projects in my life, and I am enjoying the process and am excited to see the results in a year.

A lot of people found it helpful and liked it. More recently, I recognized how much writing well can help with so many other aspects: building attention, communication, thinking, and creativity.

Don't fade writing.

Topic #3: Multipreneurship

I am also interested in learning more about finding and solving real problems by building products and systems.

I have been interested in this for a long time, but I have always been too scared, uncertain, and unsure of how I am meant to go about it.

However, I have never felt more confident and in a position of strength. I recently quit my job, but I am feeling something I haven't felt in a while: excited to wake up to attack life with a fire that was starting to die out.

Let's connect if you're interested in these same topics!

I was obsessed with basketball in high school, and one of the varsity players gave me an unforgettable piece of advice.

I wanted to be the best and compete at the highest level in our team, but I had been running myself ragged, trying to improve. But, like most beginners, I was making many mistakes: not practicing at game speed, not focusing enough on conditioning, and not focusing on the mental aspect of the game.

Until one day, this basketball player I looked up to said to me:

"Don't leave anything on the table and allow someone to say you had potential."

That day, my whole life changed.

From that day on, I internalized what he said and realized that we all have potential, given our genetics, when we started training, and our environment.

The only way to reach our full potential is to push ourselves and put ourselves in uncomfortable situations where we will likely fail and learn from this failure.

Even though I recognized this as a high schooler, it was hard to put it into practice and properly reframe failure and the fear of what others would think about me if this were to occur.

It wasn't until recently that I realized that failure should be welcomed. If you aren't failing, you aren't taking big enough swings and living to your full potential.

So, ask yourself: “Where could I be taking more risks and seeking failure to learn from?"

If you've never heard of the 4A Framework by Dickie Bush, well, keep on reading because you gon' learn today! Almost all writing can be put into one of these four categories.

You don't need to be a writer for this to be useful. However, being aware of this technique will allow you to interface with content differently.

The 4 A's are:

Actionable: here's how to do something

Analytical: here's why something is the way it is with data/research

Aspirational: here's why you can do something

Anthropological: here's why, according to psychology/human nature

The next time you read something, try to see if it falls into one of these four buckets ;)

Having an awareness of this framework enables two primary things:

Reading with a better understanding of the essence that the author is trying to communicate.

Write with more intent, thus communicating your thoughts more effectively to your readers.

This framework may seem evident when presented, but generally, these types of ideas are the best.

While we may have implicit knowledge (intuition) in many areas, exposing them in a more explicit nature often grants you full agency to take advantage of the tool.

The art of finding an idea that exists in many people’s minds and expressing it in a way that makes them go, “A-ha, I've always thought this, but just didn't know how to put it in words" is extremely valuable.

Entire careers have been built on this; see Tim Ferriss, Mark Manson, Greg McKeown, James Clear, etc.

They curate and distill the essence of ideas in a way that is immediately reachable to a broad audience.

So, which of the 4A's is this piece?

Hacking the YouTube Algorithm

I'm no Mr. Beast in optimizing engagement and user retention on YouTube.

But, I have spent copious amounts of time on YouTube watching videos and developing a taste for good and bad content.

I just started learning about optimizing engagement, so I am an absolute beginner. I've watched a few Mr. Beast podcast interviews and reverse-engineered some of his content to try to hack user retention.

FYI, I got this idea from Mr. Beat, and a group of YouTubers analyzed existing popular YouTubers and saw what they were doing.

Here's how I first got interested in Optimizing Engagement:

My friend and I started a podcast on AI a few months ago. However, we both realized this was not what we were interested in.

So, we decided to pivot to purely comedic content. This shift in strategy proved successful, as the second Instagram reel we posted received 1.7 million views.

While we understand that this was partially luck, it gave us confidence that there was an opportunity to unpack this further and give it a shot.

We immediately tried to reverse engineer it and gained a couple of key ingredients from the data: curiosity, relatability, and shareability.

So, my goal over the next year is:

Do the Ali Abdaal course: Part-Time YouTuber

Study the top YouTubers to emulate what they are doing: thumbnail, hook title, pacing, music, sound, etc.

Experiment with the different techniques, starting from the high-impact, low-effort changes

Build an excellent understanding of the different techniques and have the knowledge to grow any channel from 0 essentially

However, creativity and emotional depth are areas where humans have a distinct edge. Great writing often involves personal experiences, cultural context, and emotional nuance that AI struggles to replicate. While AI can mimic certain styles, it lacks the genuine human touch that resonates deeply with readers.

Contextual Understanding and Adaptability

Human writers bring a comprehensive understanding of context, societal nuances, and evolving trends. Human writers can navigate and interpret these subtleties, providing richer, more nuanced content.

Ethical and Moral Considerations

Writing often involves ethical and moral judgments. This human ability to handle sensitive subjects responsibly remains crucial.

While AI has made significant strides in writing, human writers bring irreplaceable qualities to the table—creativity, emotional depth, contextual understanding, and ethical reasoning.

If you're figuring out what skill to learn, I will convince you that online writing is the highest-leverage skill.

If we break down the building blocks of "writing,” the primary ingredient is words, which carry a stored form of energy (information). Crafting these words together can evoke specific emotions and spread ideas at scale online.

This is incredibly powerful as it enables a few things:

The ability to garner attention online

Developing a skill that will improve other areas of life

Ease of learning vs. other high-leverage skills

Let's dive in.

Garnering Attention

Attention is the most valuable commodity in the modern world.

Grabbing attention is a highly valuable skill as it unlocks unforeseen opportunities and opens doors.

The distribution channel of social media platforms unlocks massive opportunities.

Keystone Skill

Writing is a keystone skill: something that improves other skills in your life.

Writing well will make you a better communicator. I am pursuing building an audience, content creation, and stand-up comedy.

All of which require the ability to write well and understand different structures.

Low Investment

Writing online has a low barrier to entry.

It requires almost no capital investment and takes little time to improve compared to high-leverage skills like coding.

You likely have "taste" from browsing and can identify why you click on certain things; thus, you only need to develop the ability to reproduce this.

Ultimately, the skill is not just the ability to write, but understanding what makes people tick.

Over the next 30 days, I plan to write daily about mental models, Web3 deep dives, and more. The common thread will be my learning journey.

Come along with me on this journey—and let me know if you have any questions!

Global $ALFA rewards, 2. the Channels share of staked $ALFA vs. all Channels and 3. the Channels share of subscription flows vs. all Channels."

Now that we know how
$ALFA
emissions work at a Global level, we will take a look at how this is distribute to each Channel.

$ALFA
Distribution

Global $ALFA rewards = GR

Channel Flow Rate Proportion (CFRP) = Channel inflow rate / Sum of all Channel inflow rates

Channel Stake Proportion (CSP) = Channel staked amount / Sum of all Channel stake amounts

Channel $ALFA rewards = (GR * 0.25 * CFRP) + (GR * 0.75 * CSP)

We can actually simplify the first part of this equation, credits to ser @surewhatever for bringing this to my attention:

= GR * 0.25 * CFRP

= GR * 0.25 * Channel inflow rate / Sum of all Channel inflow rates

= 0.25 * Channel inflow rate

Uff, a lot of equations and acronyms, but let's simply break down what each one means.

Global $ALFA rewards
- this is what we went over above, the Global
$ALFA
rewards.

Channel Flow Rate Proportion (CFRP)
- this is the proportion of the Channels flow rate vs. the Global flow rate (sum of all Channel flow rates), that is, if a Channel has a flow rate of 100 and the Global flow rate is 200, then the Channel accounts for 50% of the Global flow rate and
CFRP = 0.5
.

Channel Stake Proportion (CSP)
- this is similar to the above except instead of flow rate, it is looking at staked balance. That is, the amount staked to a Channel divided by the amount staked by all Channels.

So now that we have all the parts, what does this big equation mean:

Channel $ALFA rewards = (GR * 0.25 * CFRP) + (GR * 0.75 * CSP)

A Channel's
$ALFA
rewards is the sum of two parts:

25% of the Global
$ALFA
rewards multiplied by the proportion of the Channels' flow rate vs. sum of all Channel flow rates

75%, hehe, of the Global
$ALFA
rewards multiplied by the proportion of the Channels' stake vs. sum of all Channels' stakes

The takeaway here is that 75%, (no more teehee, thought it was 69%), of the
$ALFA
allocated to your Channel is determined by the proportion of stake to your Channel vs. the total stake and 25% of the
$ALFA
allocated to your channel is determined by the proportion of the inflow to our Channel vs. the total inflow.

But, how is cashback distributed at the Channel level?

Cashback

When a User subscribes to a Channel, their inflow is split in three:

70% is cashback to Users who have staked to the Channel

25% goes to the Channel creator

5% goes to the protocol as a fee

Finally, we will look at how
$ALFA
is rewarded to individual Users and how cashback is rewarded to a User.x

User Level

"User $ALFA rewards are a function of the Channel $ALFA rewards divided by the number of subscribers."

$ALFA
Distribution

We've gone over how
$ALFA
is emitted at a Global level as well as how much of these Global emissions are allocated to a Channel. But how do you know how much
$ALFA
you will receive?

User $ALFA rewards = Channel $ALFA rewards * (User inflow rate / Total Channel inflow rate)

A simpler equation! Essentially, we multiply the
Channel $ALFA rewards
retrieved in the previous section and divide this by the proportion of your flow rate vs. all other flow rates in the Channel, currently you cannot select your flow rate, so this is the same as the number of Users in the Channel.

A simplification of the equation:

User $ALFA rewards = Channel $ALFA rewards / Number of subscribers

The takeaway here is that as the amount of
$ALFA
staked to a Channel goes up, the amount allocated to a Channel goes up and the amount allocated to a User goes up.

On the other hand, when a User joins a Channel, the amount of
$ALFA
allocated to a Channel also goes up, but the amount allocated to a User may not always go up as it is also slightly diluted by an additional subscriber.

Note: There is a max daily limit on the amount of $ALFA to claim, so make sure to come back each day to claim more $ALFA.

This is all fine and dandy, but what about cashback, how do I know how much cashback I am entitled to?

Cashback

"The amount of cashback a User receives is determined by their share of the staked amount vs. the total staked amount in the Channel."

User cashback allocation = Channel cashback * (User staked amount / Channel staked amount)

Another simple equation! A Users share of the cashback amount is their share of the staked
$ALFA
in a Channel. Sweet and simple.

The takeaway here is the greater your staked amount vs. others in a Channel, the greater your cashback proportion.

Now you should have a fairly solid understanding of the AlfaFrens system from a first principles perspective, looking at the different inputs and outputs and how the system is built on top of these base building blocks.

Let's see what the overarching implications and some possible flywheels that occur as a result.

Overarching Implications and Flywheels

Given what we know now, the question then becomes: "what is the optimal strategy?" and the answer is it depends. It depends on what you are using AlfaFrens for and your personal edge. We will go over the coveted Blue Elefant strategy which aims to take advantage of a flywheel effect.

Stake vs. Subscription

One important question to ask is whether to optimize your own Channel to have more subscribers or stake. You kinda need both, but once you have some of both, it is probably best to primarily focus on staked amount as this is more within your control. Unless you are able to easily garner attention/subscriptions.

Attention

This is the highest leverage edge to have. More attention => likely higher # of subscribers => more incentive to stake => higher # of subscribers / more attention => ...

With a larger audience it is easier to get a lot of subscribers/stakers quickly and this will generally lead to Pareto Principle dynamics.

It is important to engage and provide some sort of value in your Channel messages whether it be good vibes, strategy, feet pics, etc. otherwise your subscribers will drop off over a long enough time.

Le Blue Elefant Strategy

The Coveted Blue Elefant

You've just opened up AlfaFrens and you're thinking: "wat do?" or you're already going HAM and wondering "how optimize?".

Well, fret no more, we introduce Le Blue Elefant Strategy.

Firstly, subcribe to your own Channel. As your Channel grows in subs/stakes, you will accrue more
$ALFA
as a result and be incentivized to grow your Channel and engage with your audience.

Secondly, look in the explore tab for Channels which will yield you the most
$ALFA
per
DEGENx
streamed, this generally means a Channel with low subs to high staked amount ratio. This is for farming
$ALFA
.

Now, you will be earning
$ALFA
! What now? Well, you can take your rewards and stake to your own Channel or stake to Channels which yield high cashback or a combination of the two depending on your goal, strategy and edge.

Why stake to your own Channel/blue elefant? Because as you stake to your own Channel, more

Le Blue Elephant Flywheel

$ALFA
will be allocated to your Channel, which will incentivize Users to subscribe to your Channel because
$ALFA
earned per
$DEGENx
streamed is higher now which incentivizes more people to stake because they want that sweet, sweet cashback.

Boom, it really is that simple.

So what are you waiting for anon...?

GO AND GET THAT SWEET
$ALFA
AND ENJOY THE FUCKING RIDE!

Fin

If you've made it this far, congrats, your attention span is not completely washed!

If you found this helpful and are interested in crypto, AI and more, follow me on Farcaster and Twitter, it's free and will make me a happy boy 🙂.
