Unfortunately, there is no foolproof way to prevent attackers from stealing your private information from a service you use. However, there are several steps you can take to prevent your data from being used against you after a breach.

Change your password immediately after receiving a breach alert. Use a unique, longer, and complex password, and change the password for any other service that has been breached, even if you were not informed that your information was affected. Avoid using password variations or tricks like adding a number or symbol, which do not add security. Consider using multi-factor authentication (MFA) for added security.

Check your bank and credit card accounts immediately after receiving a breach alert. Delete any stored financial information for online services unless necessary. Avoid storing card details with online services.

Monitor your bank and credit card accounts and cancel any that have been breached. Contact your provider to cancel the card immediately, even if you were not informed that your card information was breached. Consider using temporary credit cards to limit damage from a data breach.

Use a password manager to generate, save, and use strong, unique passwords for all your accounts.

Protect your online identity by regularly monitoring your accounts, especially after a data breach alert.

By following these steps, you can reduce the risk of identity theft and other online crimes after a data breach.

Voice phishing, or vishing, is a type of phone scam where a fraudster attempts to obtain personal information, make an unauthorized payment, or install malicious software on your device. Unlike phishing, which is primarily carried out via email, vishing relies on the telephone to exploit individuals' trust and gullibility.

Vishing attacks can be difficult to detect, as scammers can manipulate the caller ID to appear as if the call is coming from a trustworthy source. Scammers can also use leaked data from past breaches or social engineering tactics to obtain phone numbers and other personal information from victims.

There are several ways to identify a vishing scam. Firstly, the caller may ask for confidential information, such as bank account details, passwords, and social security numbers. Secondly, the caller's request may be unusually urgent or require immediate action, thereby pressuring the victim to act quickly without thinking. Thirdly, the caller may pose as a legitimate authority figure, such as a government official or bank representative, to gain the victim's trust. Finally, some scammers may make short calls that end abruptly to encourage victims to call back and potentially incur additional charges.

To protect yourself from vishing attacks, it is recommended to avoid answering calls from unknown numbers and to keep your personal information private. If you do receive a suspicious call, avoid giving away confidential information and end the call immediately. You can also use apps or Google to identify unknown callers and report suspicious activity to the relevant authorities.

Vishing attacks can target both individuals and organizations. Scammers may use social engineering tactics to deceive employees at different levels and gain access to sensitive information or systems. Some scammers may also take advantage of current events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, to deceive victims by offering fake vaccinations or tests.

Stay protected online with Maxproxy Vishing is just one trick in an online criminal’s toolbox for getting access to your private information or infecting your device with malware.

If you’ve ever been part of a school, company, or any similar organization, you've probably used a web proxy server. But what exactly does "proxy" mean? In this article, we define proxy servers, explain how they work, and most importantly, what you can and cannot expect from proxies in terms of online privacy and security.

What is a proxy server?

A proxy server acts as a bridge between you and the rest of the internet. Normally, when you use your browser to surf the internet, you connect directly to the website you’re visiting. Proxies communicate with websites on your behalf.

When you use an online proxy, your browser first connects to the proxy, and the proxy forwards your traffic to the website you’re visiting. That’s why proxy servers are also known as “forward proxies.” The proxy server also receives the website’s response and sends it back to you.

In everyday use, the word “proxy” refers to someone who is authorized to take an action on your behalf — such as voting in a meeting that you can’t attend. A proxy server fills the same role, but online. Instead of you communicating directly with the websites you visit, a proxy steps in to handle that relationship for you.

Web proxies and HTTP proxies

While some proxies are hosted within your internal network, a web proxy is publicly available over the internet. Anyone can visit a web proxy and use it to browse other websites through the proxy connection.

An HTTP proxy focuses on the connection between a web server using HTTP and a client (your device). These proxies are frequently used as safety mechanisms, checking and filtering potentially harmful HTTP content from unsecured websites before the content reaches your computer or smartphone. HTTP proxies also protect web servers from some types of client-side cyberattacks, including DDoS attacks that exploit buffer overflows.

What does a proxy server do, exactly?

As your intermediary on the web, proxy servers have many useful roles. Here are a few primary uses for a proxy server:

Firewalls: A firewall is a type of network security system that acts as a barrier between a network and the wider internet. Security professionals configure firewalls to block unwanted access to the networks they are trying to protect, often as an anti-malware or anti-hacking countermeasure. A proxy server between a trusted network and the internet is the perfect place to host a firewall designed to intercept and either approve or block incoming traffic before it reaches the network.

Content filters: Just as online proxies can regulate incoming connection requests with a firewall, they can also act as content filters by blocking undesired outgoing traffic. Companies may configure proxy servers as content filters to prevent employees from accessing blocked websites while at work.

Bypassing content filters: You can use another proxy to bypass a web proxy. If your company’s proxy has blocked your favorite website, but it hasn’t blocked access to your personal proxy server or favorite web proxy, you can use it to reach the websites you want.

Caching: Caching refers to the temporary storage of frequently accessed data, which makes it easier and faster to access it again in the future. Internet proxies can cache websites so that they load faster than if you were to send your traffic all the way through the internet to the website’s server. This reduces latency — the time it takes for data to travel through the internet.

Security: In addition to hosting firewalls, proxy servers can also enhance security by serving as the singular public face of the network. From an outside point of view, all the network’s users are anonymous, hidden behind the internet proxy’s IP address. If a hacker wants to access a specific device on a network, it’ll be a lot harder for them to find it.

Stay protected online with Maxproxy Vishing is just one trick in an online criminal’s toolbox for getting access to your private information or infecting your device with malware.

The internet can be a dangerous place without proper online security measures. One such measure is a firewall, which blocks unauthorized traffic to protect your network and internet-connected devices. While firewalls have been used for building safety, digital firewalls monitor incoming and outgoing traffic. A firewall's task is to filter safe traffic and block any that could pose a threat to cybersecurity. A firewall can prevent a hacker from breaking into your computer or stop a virus on your device from accessing the internet. However, it can also mistakenly block safe applications from working. Although a firewall is a good cybersecurity measure, it is not sufficient alone in today's online environment, full of hackers and malware.

Most consumer devices have their own firewalls, so you don't need to buy a separate firewall for your computer. However, you must ensure that the firewall on your device is up and running from the device's settings. An antivirus program is a crucial cybersecurity tool that everyone should install on their devices. It inspects downloaded files and visited websites to see if they pose a threat to you and your device, and it blocks the threat before it can cause any harm.

It is a common misconception that the default firewall on your computer is enough to protect you. While it does offer protection against hackers and their attempts to attack you, a firewall requires an antivirus program to support it. Without an antivirus, when the firewall is turned off, you are left completely defenseless against malware and hacking.

Whether you are an individual user or a large company, a firewall adds another layer of protection on top of other security measures, such as an antivirus. A firewall monitors traffic in your network and blocks harmful traffic. It also minimizes the risk of malware infection and improves overall security and privacy. However, a firewall alone is not enough as your device may still get infected if not supplemented with an antivirus. Cybersecurity should always be multi-layered, so consider adding a VPN into the mix to browse securely and in private online.

Mobile devices have their own firewalls, just like desktop computers. Windows and macOS have their own firewalls, but the default firewall on macOS needs to be turned on separately from the device's system settings. Android and iOS mobile devices do not have their own firewall installed by default, but you can install one yourself.

Firewalls can be software, hardware, or cloud-based. There are also different types of firewalls that fit different purposes, based on how they work and who uses them. While a firewall is a good cybersecurity measure, it is not sufficient alone in today's online environment, full of hackers and malware.

A proxy server is a software or hardware intermediary server that sits between an end user and a website or other service’s server. The main reasons for using proxies include efficiency, privacy, and security.

When web traffic moves through a proxy, requests are first sent to the proxy server, which handles the request along with additional tasks such as filtering content, scanning for malware, masking the origin of the request, encrypting messages, and more.

Proxies are commonly used for information security against threats and for system optimization, such as load balancing and caching similar requests for added speed. They may also serve as a firewall and handle authentication requests. At a minimum, a proxy shields an enterprise’s internal infrastructure from known threats found on the external web.

However, proxy servers can have unintended consequences for security. Since they can obfuscate the true origin of a request, they can also mask the legitimate parties to a dialogue, exchange, or transaction. PCs require a unique Internet Protocol (IP) address that serves as its legitimate identifier. Without knowledge of the parties involved, the masking of parties can result in spoofing or suffering a man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack.

To use a proxy server, every computer connected to the internet has a unique IP address, which represents its address on the internet. Every proxy server also has its own IP address. Therefore, when you route internet traffic via a proxy server, you are effectively using that proxy's IP address, not your device’s. A proxy server masks your address while still sending the same results you would get if you were visiting web servers on your own.

A proxy server can also hide your location from the websites you visit, encrypt your data so the destination server can't read it, and block access to specific websites based on their IP addresses.

The main benefit of using a proxy server is that it hides your public IP address, allowing you to surf the web anonymously. It also acts as a firewall and web filter, protecting your device and data from hacking threats. Additionally, proxy caching can improve speed by storing data in a cache and sending it to the user instead of obtaining the same information repeatedly.

If you want to browse privately, the best way to do so is to use a VPN like F‑Secure’s MAXPROXY. A VPN hides your real address from the websites you visit and blocks your internet service provider from seeing your internet traffic. MAXPROXY is easy to use and offers a free trial without requiring a credit card.

A VPN is a valuable tool for all types of devices and operating systems, including Windows PCs. Secure your online browsing and protect your privacy by using a VPN. In this article, we'll discuss the benefits of a VPN and how to choose one for your Windows computer.

What is a VPN?

VPN stands for virtual private network, and it allows you to safely and privately use the internet on your PC and other devices. By using a VPN, you can hide your device's IP address and prevent online tracking and cyber threats. With the prevalence of online criminals and hackers, a VPN can encrypt your private data and create a secure tunnel between your device and the internet. Changing your virtual location and hiding your IP address are also great ways to protect your online privacy.

5 Benefits of a VPN

Incognito mode is not enough to ensure private browsing. With a VPN, you can browse the internet with stronger privacy and security. Here are five advantages of using a VPN:

Hide your IP address: A VPN service gives you a new IP address, making it appear as though you are browsing from the VPN server's IP address instead of your own.

Change your virtual location: You can choose a new virtual location and change the country your PC appears to be in by changing your IP address.

A VPN can help safeguard your online privacy and security. However, choosing a trustworthy VPN provider from the many options available can be challenging. Here are six things to consider when selecting a VPN service:

Free VPNs may come at a cost While free VPNs may seem appealing, they often have hidden costs. Some may show ads or sell your data to third parties. Additionally, free VPNs typically have slower connection speeds and fewer features than paid alternatives.

Look for experienced vendors The VPN market is growing rapidly, with many new vendors entering the field. When evaluating a VPN provider, consider their experience and background in cybersecurity. Transparency is also critical, so choose a provider that is open about their security practices.

Be cautious of biased reviews When researching VPNs, you'll likely come across numerous reviews and comparisons. However, not all reviews are created equal, and some may be biased or paid for by the VPN provider. Be critical of the sources you rely on and seek out independent, trustworthy reviews.

The provider's home country matters VPN companies must comply with the laws of their home country. Some countries have laws that allow authorities to collect, store, and access user data, which can compromise your privacy. Before selecting a VPN provider, investigate their home country's privacy laws.

Read the privacy policy Most VPNs claim to keep no logs, but this is not always the case. Some VPN providers may collect and store your browsing data, which can pose a privacy risk. Always read the provider's privacy policy to understand what data they collect and how they use it.

Consider server locations VPN providers typically have servers located around the world. While having access to thousands of servers may seem like a benefit, it can also be a security risk. More servers mean less control over the network, so choose a provider with the locations you need and not just the most servers.

F-Secure Maxproxy is a trusted VPN provider with over 30 years of experience in cybersecurity. They do not sell user data and have a straightforward privacy policy. Millions of users rely on Maxproxy to protect their privacy and security online, making it a top choice for those seeking a reliable VPN provider.
