Diving into Blast Exploration: What’s the Narrative

You are a Nomissian, answering a call for help from the Normies. A black hole is engulfing solar systems and approaching theirs. Your mission: travel between planets and systems to resist the black hole’s gravity and its dark influence on Normies.

Your allies aim to onboard you to the Blast ecosystem and bring you closer to the rewards. You will meet The Blast Domains Cadet Registry — an institution within the Blast Solar System, serving as the official body for licensing and regulating the activities of Nomissian cadets. The Registry plays a pivotal role in maintaining order and fostering excellence among the galaxy’s brightest minds.

There is also BlastUp Launchpad Company with significant influence in the Blast system, as it was one of the first companies to settle in the system. In September 2023, the Manta Network unveiled MantaFest, a five-week-long celebration marking the Alpha launch of the Manta Pacific Mainnet, orchestrated by Galxe. The event featured a plethora of DeFi activities involving numerous DeFi protocols, including QuickSwap and its trio of onchain tasks.

These tasks presented participants with the chance to earn up to 160 Galxe Points. By taking part, users had the opportunity to mint exclusive NFTs and accumulate points, showcasing their early involvement within the Manta Pacific ecosystem.

Upon the campaign's conclusion, QuickSwap was tasked with distributing 50K $MANTA to those who partook in the QuickSwap’s challenges.

Problem

The campaign was going to have a large number of participants — up to 10K in all 3 quests. With limited resources and a lack of advanced data analytics capabilities within the QuickSwap marketing team, a question emerged:

❔ How to make the campaign’s reward distribution as fair and transparent as possible, but not rewarding bot farms and sybil attackers?

The QuickSwap team devised several tasks to monitor users’ onchain activity. To qualify for Galxe points and the $MANTA airdrop, users had to complete at least one of the following tasks:

• Execute 5 swaps

• Complete 1 swap

• Provide $100 in liquidity for over 7 days

Notably absent were tasks involving social media verifications, a common tactic employed by marketing teams to boost campaign engagement. However, such approaches often fall short of expectations.

Sybil attackers typically lead the charge by creating multiple accounts and wallet addresses to maximize their gains from campaigns and quests. Furthermore, social media verification is just a form of doxxing, a practice that Nomis doesn’t endorse as it goes against the spirit of web3.

Solution

At Nomis, we're confident that onchain data alone is sufficient to distinguish real contributors from bot farms.

💡 Nomis leveraged its data analytics expertise and wallet scoring system to refine the participant list for the MantaFest Campaign. This was achieved by offering insights into the historical onchain activities of wallet addresses. In addition to providing crucial data points, we conducted a Sybil detection analysis and generated a comprehensive report.

Nomis’ Scoring Model uses a logarithmic function for reward distribution, which benefits every participant and offers even more rewards for on-chain power users.

This approach provided QuickSwap with two levels of Sybil resistance:

1. We assess wallet onchain activity across Polygon, Ethereum, and BSC to assign a Multichain Score ranging from 0-100. A score of 30 is the minimum threshold for campaign participation, indicating a relatively low likelihood of the wallet being part of a Sybil cluster.

2. Users looking to join the campaign must mint an SBT on our platform. We impose a nominal minting fee to deter Sybil farms from attempting to validate their onchain reputation and authenticity through Nomis.

In a typical scenario, at the conclusion of a campaign, project teams often need to sift through a vast list of participants in an Excel spreadsheet to identify bots and fake accounts, relying heavily on manual analytics. Nomis solves this issue by providing comprehensive user reports using the Scoring Model at the end of each campaign.

Results

🏆 QuickSwap managed to distribute rewards in a manner that was fair, transparent, ROI-efficient, and based on onchain reputation.

Community members who engaged in any of the three QuickSwap onchain tasks during Galxe's MantaFest campaign were allocated a portion of the airdrop according to the following reward tiers:

• Tier 1: 7,500 MANTA allocated to users who completed the "Provide $100 liquidity over 7 days" task.

• Tier 2: 35,000 MANTA allocated to users who executed the "Make 5 swaps" task.

• Tier 3: 7,500 MANTA allocated to users who completed the "Make 1 swap" task.

Duplicate wallet addresses were excluded. If an address was found to have participated in more than one task, it was only considered once for the airdrop reward, placed in the highest reward tier. Consequently, participants who completed higher-tier tasks received a greater share of rewards.

🏅 Additionally, Nomis’ Multichain Score holders were eligible for an extra 10% atop the amount they were set to receive. For instance, if users had to receive 10 $MANTA, they would gain an additional $MANTA token for being a Multichain Score holder.

Nomis helped QuickSwap to run a better web3 campaign with higher ROI by identifying power and sticky users who deserve better incentives (vs non-target and low-TVL users) and protect reward distribution from Sybil attackers.

Starknet Airdrop Based on Nomis’ Scoring Algorithm

Here’s how it could work:

1. Users who are active on chain at any time before the announcement of the airdrop are eligible.

2. The announcement means a snapshot, after which any onchain activity won’t count towards the airdrop distribution.

3. The users' Scores are calculated based on their pre-announcement onchain activity.

4. A user mint a Score, which is an onchain proof of their reputation (a sufficient amount of time is given for this). The last but not the least step is paying a minting fee — akin to a 2FA verification that demonstrates Anti-Sybil status.

5. Those who’ve got SBT receive an airdrop, the amount of which depends on their Score.

6. Decentralization ensures even minimal activity gets rewarded, leaving everyone satisfied.

That’s how Starknet ideally could assess users’ wallets. But let's backtrack a bit.

The Starknet Foundation planned to distribute over 700 million $STRK to nearly 1.3 million addresses. In the previous article, we discussed Starknet's criteria for selecting users, explained their ineffectiveness and dishonesty, and most importantly, highlighted the community's response to Starknet's decision on distributing $STRK. Give it a read if you missed it.

Again, Starknet set several criteria for rewarding users: 3 months of active engagement, executing more than 5 transactions, and achieving a transaction volume of over $100.

And there was a catch—the requirement for a wallet to hold over 0.005 $ETH. Not $USDT, $USDC, or any other token, but specifically $ETH. And it had to be in the wallet, not a liquidity pool. This criterion sparks controversy, as TVL or all-time liquidity highs could better demonstrate growth to investors.

As a result, only a third of the Starknet’s community received $STRK as a reward. But others contributed too. What about their rewards? Let’s dive deeper.

The Trust Issues with Trusta

Starknet Foundation teamed up with TrustaLabs to create Sybil-resistant user lists and allocate $STRK efficiently. Starknet claimed its Provisions program would empower recipients to influence Starknet’s future through governance votes, ensuring that influence matched the user’s contribution to avoid disproportionate power.

Starknet had noble intentions — aiming for a fair distribution that would benefit both users and developers to foster ecosystem improvements through proposals and governance. However, the tools they selected ultimately proved unsuccessful.

There are also questionable criteria for rewarding developers, as Starknet chose to reward individuals who made a minimum of 3 commits to the GitHub repository, including even those who simply corrected typos in the repository documentation.

Plus, Starknet introduced an 'Early Community Members' form, offering additional tokens to prompt participants. However, crypto community has noticed a mismatch between the volume of applications and the actual number of link clicks, which has sparked questions about the fairness of the distribution’s process.

Based on all these facts, it can be argued that the scoring criteria were flawed. Interestingly, even those who met Trusta’s criteria missed out on $STRK, despite showing significant activity indicators.

Efficacy: Unveiling Nomis’ Scoring Solution

Crypto community is now navigating the Sybil era, where users aim to maximize profits with minimal effort. And we believe that everyone who has contributed to the ecosystem, whether as a Sybil with multiple accounts or a user with a single account, deserves to be rewarded. How? This is precisely what we elaborate on in the following sections of the article.

For example, Nomis’ Scoring solution ensures a fair distribution of tokens through a crucial component — a non-linear function. Let's delve deeper into this concept. By scrutinizing all the wallets and evaluating their ratings, the project gains a profound understanding of its audience. With this knowledge, the team can distinguish between different user profiles.

Here comes the intriguing part: the project has the option to either exclude less active wallets from rewards or opt for a more strategic approach.

It's important to acknowledge that even these less active wallets are integral participants in the ecosystem and deserve recognition. This is where a non-linear reward distribution function comes into play. By utilizing this method, the project acknowledges and rewards all participants, albeit to varying extents, with a focus on genuine users.

A Win-Win for Both Projects and Users

Starknet: More Than a Mere Illusion

Starknet: A Potential Disappointment of the Year?

Imagine this: 2 ETH, $10,000, $20,000— that's the investment range from some of Starknet's most engaged users since the token launch was announced. And their reward? A big fat zero.

Post-February 14th, the crypto realm split into two camps: those who hit the jackpot with Starknet, including Sybils and single or dual-account holders, and those who came up empty. Despite their differing fortunes, the shock at Starknet's airdrop criteria united them. Plus, they needed to show three months of active engagement, execute over five transactions, and surpass a $100 transaction volume.

Interestingly, even if that 0.005 ETH was tied up in staking, it wouldn't count towards meeting the criteria. And those who staked their ETH in Starknet's protocols or held stablecoin equivalents were out of luck for the airdrop. A significant chunk of on-chain activity, therefore, got sidelined. Fairness, anyone?

There seemed to be little rivalry within Starknet's ecosystem, given the relatively low active address count. The consensus was to keep on contributing, stay loyal, and help the ecosystem grow and prove its worth to investors, with rewards naturally following suit.

But Starknet decided to play by a different set of rules. The community backed them, mostly out of a spirit of volunteerism. This might seem routine if not for the significant impact of airdrop experiences. Take Arbitrum, for example, which hosted one of the most successful airdrops in 2023. Could Starknet not take a leaf out of its book?

Here's a kicker: Despite Starknet's outlined measures to thwart Sybil attacks and reward genuine contributions, the reality was somewhat anticlimactic. Dedicated users with a single main account, over $100 in volume, more than 5 transactions, and investments in various Starknet projects ended up with less than 0.005 ETH and no STRK rewards.

We've seen some eyebrow-raising cases:

• A user with merely 2 transactions snagged 360K STRK.

• A Sybil with 1361 wallets bagged 1,432,800 STRK—nearly $3M worth.

What do Sybils think?

For a glimpse into the community's reaction to Starknet's airdrop, just peek at the comments under their Twitter announcement.

On the brighter side, there are satisfied Sybils who managed to secure up to 180 STRK for each of their accounts. Yet, not all Sybils were as fortunate.

We're essentially spotlighting the uneven token distribution, swayed by a singular factor that arguably shouldn't have held such sway. Let's bring in the experts! Meet Brelgin: a 150-account holder, crypto aficionado, and seasoned airdrop hunter. What's the verdict from the Sybils?

"Starknet, along with other TrustaLabs-utilizing projects, has been criticized for opaque allocation criteria. Initially, the guidelines seemed nebulous at best, leading to public dissatisfaction and a subsequent broadening of the criteria. Still, the lack of verifiable data remained a sticking point.

Of the 150 identical accounts I’ve created, a mere 10 got lucky. This discrepancy casts doubts on the selection process, especially when you hear about an account landing 360 thousand STRK tokens off just two network transactions.

TrustaLabs and Starknet launched an 'Early Community Members' form, dangling extra tokens for early birds. Yet, the disparity between the number of applications and actual link clicks has raised eyebrows over the process's integrity."

What is the Justice?

So, what's the lowdown? Are token transactions alone enough to weigh someone's value in gold? Do airdrops fulfill their intended purpose, and are the outcomes justifiable?

However, there are cases of token distribution within the crypto space that have been executed well, utilizing various methods to ensure proper allocation. And these methods are far from KYC and Passports:

• HOP and Optimism involve the community in identifying Sybils, thereby decentralizing the responsibility. They analyze users' onchain activities, examining address connections through fund transfers and transactions. This method evaluates onchain behaviors such as smart contract interactions, transaction timings, intervals, and active periods to identify patterns. However, excessively rigorous screening may inadvertently penalize genuine users. Delegating the authority for Sybil checks to the community could also harm interpersonal trust and exacerbate conflicts among members.

• Arbitrum stands out for its innovative approach to token distribution, which is based on onchain activity and community discovery algorithms like Louvain for Sybil cluster discovery.

• Celestia’s airdrop, the second largest in 2023, distributed $0.73 billion worth of $TIA. Unlike typical airdrops, it excluded 'farming' methods and instead focused on developers, researchers in public goods and protocol infrastructure, active Ethereum rollup users, and stakers and IBC relayers in Cosmos Hub and Osmosis. However, by limiting users' ability to participate in close quarters, the project runs the risk of diminishing loyalty, which can be crucial for future marketing campaigns.

Briefly about Nomis

1. Nomis is made to establish the first iteration of reputation in web3 (You can read more on how we feel it here and here). Transparency of blockchain gives us an opportunity to build reputation on a strong basis of open on-chain data.

2.The core of Nomis is strong mathematics and hierarchy analysis in particular. This makes score multifaceted, obvious and independent.

3.Nomis is designed to help developers deliver a personalized Web3 experience to users in various Web3 verticals such as DeFi, DAO and Web3 Social.

How Nomis scores

1.Nomis analyzes over 30 parameters. The math model behind Nomis Protocol could be flexibly adjusted to the needs and priorities of a certain web3 project. It means that weights of parameters counted by Nomis Protocol could change from project to project. And thus a unique architecture could be provided.

2.Even though Nomis score is adjustable and final combination depends on the project it is always integral. High value of one particular parameter (e.g. number of transactions)  doesn’t necessarily causes high final score.

3.More over, the correlation between parameters isn’t linear. Thus increment in one parameter (few more NFT’s bought or a contract deployed) doesn’t lead to the increment in the final score directly.

4.The fact that the score is lower than required (for example, Sybil Prevention Credential on Galxe requires the score to be above 40) is certainly not an accusation of your bad intentions or whatever. It just means that the on-chain data doesn't provide enough reason to assign a higher score in this architecture of parameters. Yes, a fine but important line. In fact, the same data could provide one score value to decide if a wallet can get an undercollateralized loan, and a completely different score value if we are assessing eligibility for an airdrop.

5. In the most general sense, the recommendation is: be an active web3 user and have as many on-chain records of your activity in different web3 verticals (DeFi, NFT, DAOs, Social, etc). The world of web3 is growing every moment with new opportunities.

It isn’t that obvious which part of web3 is the most fruitful in terms of reputation. We decided to start with DeFi just because Nomis arrived as a solution aimed to solve DeFi loans over-collateralization problem.

The core philosophy of DeFi loans was to make capital accessible to everyone, but the present structure creates hindrances to mass adoption. The barrier is that DeFi loans are always over-collateralized by design. It makes them too elitist and reserved for those with both tech skills and capital.

It might seem weird, as one borrows because they need funds they don't own in most cases. So, DeFi loans, as a source of capital, aren't accessible for mainstream borrowers and underserved populations looking for alternatives in the eyes of the upcoming recession.

TradFi banks use scoring models to figure out the reliability of a borrower. Age, education, income, health, financial stability and lots of other parameters shape the portrait. Even leaving aside the point of ethics most of them non-transferable to the world of web3.

By leveraging the transparency of blockchain, we can create a new type of reliability—web3 reputation. Through open information and analysis, we can decide whether to trust someone based on their reputation rather than personal identification. But with the advent of web3, the discussion around reputation has gained importance again. The concept of reputation as a combination of trust and accountability remains highly relevant, but with a new and specific challenge. The thing that brings an added layer of complexity is that in web3 reputation and identity become separate.

In fact reputation is the only (ok, at least the main) source of trustworthiness in web3. Either when you need to be trusted by someone, or when you need to be sure in the accountability of the other parties involved in communication.

And here is seems to be the most distinguishing peculiarity of reputation in web3. It’s no longer a philosophical and ethical category, but an applied function which is deeply intertwined with the challenges of identity, trust and accountability in this new digital environment.

It may seem a disappointing downgrading of the term from the highs of philosophy to the level of the tool. But does it really what we should regret on the threshold of the new era?

You may remember Vitalik Buterin's sensational article from May 2022, which raised many questions. However, one of the questions seems to have been overlooked in further discussions: the possibility of reproducing social interactions in web3. Although this was mentioned in Vitalik's article, it was not fully explored. Perhaps this is because the article was a manifesto, attempting to outline the future, but the authors themselves admitted that concrete solutions had not yet been found. Nevertheless, it seems that the time has come, and we at Nomis are doing just that.

In the real world, we all have a reputation, whether good, bad, or complex. However, this becomes insignificant once we move into web3. We become nothing more than wallet addresses, right? Or not…

The authors of the aforementioned article suggested several ways to address this issue, but at Nomis, we saw another important aspect. As web3 expands, the number of actions we take together grows, and almost all blockchains make this information available. All the traces we leave, such as transactions, participation in DAOs, NFT purchases, participation in airdrops, and contributing to certain projects/ecosystems, are visible to everyone. Is our reputation in the "normal" world made up of anything else?

The question is, how can we turn this data into reputation? Answering this question could revolutionize web3 and set a new global trend. This is where we believe Nomis comes in. We rely on the extensive experience mentioned at the beginning, which is based on serious mathematics in the usage and prediction of blockchain data.
