Or rather, I should say, my mom has never let me wear it!.

If you still aren’t familiar with what “Alta” is, even after Vijay Devarakond proudly sported it for his wedding, let me explain using my smartypants friend - Google!

Alta (আলতা) (also known as Mahavar) is a traditional, vibrant red liquid dye applied to the hands and feet. Deeply rooted in Bengali culture, it is worn by bengali women to symbolize beauty, prosperity, and marital bliss.

Generally, Alta is a must-have in bengali wedding, festivals like Durga Puja, Poila Boishakh and also used by classical dancers during their performances.

You can possibly imagine how this simple dye can enhance the elegance of women, or whosoever wears it.

So, the question remains: why did my maa never let me wear it?

The Rules of the Village

To understand her choice, I need to give you a glimpse of the place where I live. A semi-rural place where you can find pretty much everything with a bit of search and patience. A place where judgement is readily available evrywhere; people might struggle to get water at times, but judgement is never in short supply here!

It is a place where girls are conditioned to believe that marriage is the ultimate purpose of life. People ask if I’m able to carry a pitcher or water jar in a particular way more than they ask about education or job. You can be a doctor, engineer, or whatever, but if you are not married yet, you are not “successful”!

Over time, the village evolved. Girls have made their way to high paying jobs, and even foreign lands from this very village. But to reach this point, someone had to fight the very first battle. Someone had to hold onto their strong opinions.

Fortunately, my path wasn’t quite complicated. My father earned his master’s degree in his youth, thus education was never optional for me. Still, someone had to push me to step outside this cage-like village. And, my mother did it all! Starting from holding strong opinions about my schooling to even small things like wearing Alta.

Protecting More Than Skin

Initially, her resistance was due to my very sensitive skin. Since this dye often causes irritation on sensitive skin and since my mother had a pretty bad experience with it herself, she never wanted me to try.

But now, having passed my silver jubliee on this planet, I realize the resistance had a far more deeper roots than I knew. My skin got better with age, but mom’s resistance never went away. And, finally I understood that she wasn’t just protecting my skin; but rather was protecting me from this conservative environment of my village. In a way, she was saving me from becoming prey to the early marriage game. Because, after all, she never wanted her daughter be conditioned to believe that marriage is the ultimatum of life.

She wanted me to have my own ground, my own money, job. Perhaps she feared that if I take one step towards embracing culture much, I would invite a flood of unwanted opinions, advices and even “rishtas”! Because maa knew that just as wearing a saree invites the inevitable question; “So, when are you getting married?”, embracing Alta too early would bring training of carrying water jar in a particular way, getting dressed up in a certain way, and making Gol Rotis! She knew once this virus enters, she can’t stop it from spreading.

My mom has a wonderful way of teaching me things; she never forced me to learn anything, but rather let life teach me in it’s own way. When I moved away for my master’s degree, I learned cooking, and eventually my rotis became gol! But her small resistance saved me from the crushing pressure to conform before I was ready.

I owe so much of the woman I’m becoming to my parents, especially my mother. She might not fully realize how she created a path; one that would been so much harder to walk otherwise.

Being an introvert (or ambivert?) that I am, I’m pretty sure I’ll never be able to say these feelings out loud to her face like the way I’m writing here.

Thus, this piece is a token of love, expressed purely in my own way and crafted specially for her.

Maybe one day, universe will work its magic and this page will find its way to her!

Until then, thank you Maa!

When the topic of adulthood comes up, I often to go back to this quote from Friends

"Welcome to the real world! It sucks. You’re gonna love it

- Monica Geller!"

It happens right after Rachel decides, somewhat half-heartedly, to stop relying on her father’s credit cards. It wasn’t easy for her. She struggled as a waitress, dropped trays, and got judged for her career choices by her “high-society” friends. The judgement hurt even deeper when it came from someone really close to her. But she did it all. She pushed through everything to eventually land her dream job in fashion.

Isn’t this the blueprint for most of our stories as we step into adulthood?

We are conditioned from childhood to believe in a linear path. We are taught that if we study hard and get the degree, the red carpet will roll out. We believe that after graduation, a job, rather, the dream job will automatically fall into our laps as a reward for our hard work. But the world doesn’t work on a reward system. We are bumped, and flattened when reality hits.

The “Real World” transition consists of a relentless loop: tailoring a perfect resume for each specific role, hitting ‘apply,’ sitting through nerve-wracking interviews, and ultimately getting rejected. Or even worse? Getting ghosted! This specific kind of silence from employer feels louder than a “NO.”

Slowly, the pressure to earn money and build a “life” sets in. You start feeling the tension around your parents. And, they often restrain themselves from bringing up the elephant in the room: So, what’s next?

Soon, we start taking “petty” jobs just to keep our heads above water. Because, to be honest, middle-class people can’t afford the luxury of waiting for their dream jobs. We take the retail shifts, the data entry roles, or the freelance gigs that have nothing to do with our degrees. We watch our career aspirations feel like they are slipping away, drifting further into the horizon while we’re busy surviving.

Because, Sir Charles Darwin has taught us -

"Survival of the fittest!"

Yet, there isn’t much peace even landing that corporate role. Anxiety doesn’t vanish. We live in a persistent, low-grade fear of the “layoff”.

Adulthood, very quickly reveals the Milestone Myth; A realisation that there is no “Expert Level”. Instead, everyone is on their own road of betterment! This creates a strange, quiet anxiety as we wait for a sense of “fully prepared” state that never quite comes. Forcing us to accept that being an adult isn’t about having all the answers, but rather about becoming comfortable with your own growth, on a road chosen entirely by You!

And to that, comes the flip side to Monica’s quote. The

“You’re gonna love it”

This part isn’t sarcasm, well at least not entirely. You start to love the small wins. You love the first paycheck you earned yourself, even if half of it goes to rent. You love the friends who are in the same sinking boat as you, laughing about how broke you are over cheap coffee. And, you"ll absolutely love buying gifts for your parents with your own money!!

Adulthood is a scam, sure. It’s a series of “assignments” you never asked for and bills you didn’t sign up for. But like Rachel, the struggle is what actually makes the dream job feel like a victory. It may feel all over the place right now, and it might suck for a while. But eventually, you find your feet. You find your people.

And somehow, in the middle of the chaos, one day you’ll realize you’re actually doing it.

You’re adulting!!

As I write this, one party is celebrating a victory and another is on the verge of losing its long-held grip of power. Although, it’s every early to draw conclusions from the result, I want to express how aware today’s youth has become regarding politics.

I have a 16-years-old old brother, who nowadays often sings “Paltano Dorkar, chai BJP Sarkar”. A slogan, Bhartiya Janta Party specifically used for bengal election. When I was of his age, all I knew was how I wouldn’t get TV remote today because my father was glued to news from morning. I used to be sad about missing Doremon during lunch. But here, my brother is well-versed in slogans, candidates, and history of each party, or rather should I say very horrific episodes of history!! He legit can have a full-fledged conversion on this topic.

I think the credit goes social media, again!! People have opinions, they put those opinions out, and younger generation forms their worldview based on those opinions. At some point I wonder, do we really pause and analyse before forming a strong opinion in our head? I suspect not!

Regardless, the level of awarness is undeniable. Beyond my brother who is largely influenced by social media, I have seen young creators, friends, and also my juniors openly expressing their political views this time. We know, how parties often change course once they reach the pedestal, prioritzing their own benefits over the betterment of mankind. There is a proverb in bengali that describes this very beatifully -

“যে যায় লঙ্কায় সেই হয় রাবণ”

This literally means, “Whoever goes to lanka (read power) becomes ravana (read evil).”

As I was discussing the flaws of each party with my mother today, she qouted this line to make me understand that she has witnessed this cycle throughout her life. And that I’m yet to understand the intricacies of how the world truely runs.

It is nothing new for Bengal to take matters into its own hands to demand systemic change. We learned early on that trusting blindly can lead to disastrous outcomes.

Personally, I’m waiting to see if “Abhaya” finally gets justice this time, or if a mother’s grief is simply being used to fill vote banks ? I’m waiting to see if women can walk the streets of Bengal freely again, or if we are heading towards even more dangerous time?

Youth of this generation knew they had to choose between the evil and the lesser evil. We have done our part; we have choosen the candidates we believe can bring development in this state. Now, it remains to be seen whether our decision will lead to genuine progess, or if we are heading toward a more uncertain future ?

Utlimately, we wait with bated breath, hoping that this time, the change we sought is the change we truly receive.
