January 2023 has been an exciting and productive month for us as we gear up for the Beta release of 2.0.

As we prepare for the next phase, we continue to educate and engage with the broader community, highlighting the impact of our protocol on DeFi and exploring new growth opportunities.

2.0 Beta:

We had a great November, no doubt. Let’s recap it all below!

We officially announced the completion of a $2.6M raise led by Greenfield Capital earlier this year, allowing us to keep building DeFi's interest rate protocol with our all-star team.

Our 2.0 release is also coming along nicely.

The basic UI is almost all there and functional, and we are aiming for a closed Beta in late December/early January. We've also deployed our Subgraph on Goerli. Complete documentation is on the way. The remaining Winelisting 4 pools, including Arbitrum’s batch, will soon be deployed on 1.0.

We've also been doing a lot of research lately, including market-making incentives for yield derivatives, systemic risk in DeFi, and revamping our protocol's incentives and tokenomics.

A kind reminder that the stability and profitability of the DAO is the core focus of 2.0’s.

Events & People

On the events side in November, the team participated in several events, including our 2nd Edition of Web3 DNA in Paris and Cryptoplaza in Barcelona.

On the governance side, around 50% of the APW circulating supply is now locked, signaling long-term confidence in the project from DAO members and investors of all sizes. The proposal to reduce V1 incentives has also passed, resulting in low emissions and less dilution for current holders.

The team is also working on a University Program similar to Aave's delegates.

The educational content on ERC-4626 has been shared via Twitter and has been well-received by the community. Gaspard has shared details on the revamped liquidity provision experience coming with 2.0, while Ulysse educated twitter on the importance of ERC-4626 which will be coming to 2.0.

A new PM, Chen, has been hired and is already helping improve inter-departmental communication. We’re still looking for a senior front-end and lead designer and have started sharing coworking offices in Paris for part of the local team there.

Devcon & ETHBogota

We went to the Devcon & ETHBogota conference in Bogota, Colombia to showcase APWine to an international audience and make new connections.

It went fruitful, to say at least! Our catchy booth got the attention of hundreds of attendees, including industry experts who stopped by to learn more or discuss possible synergies.

During ETHBogota, we sponsored a hackathon that challenged developers to come up with projects utilizing our APWine protocol. The trick is to build it in a pretty short time frame!

Numerous teams submitted their projects, with three of them winning a piece of our $7K prize pool: APWinery, SlothyFi & nocadena.

Gaspard also had the opportunity to judge the Hackathon's main prize pool, cementing his image as an expert in Ethereum's builders' space.

The number of submissions increases each event as we provide developers with close support, resources, and exposure to the winners, which is an extra incentive to build with us.

On October 10th, we organized with Sismo the hottest event in Bogota at that time, a rooftop event for nearly 200 people. The place was packed with users, builders & investors, and it was an excellent opportunity to put our name out to the international crowds.

Liquid Locker

In early September, a liquid locker for APW has launched at Stake DAO, allowing holders to maximize yield and voting power while keeping their funds liquid at all times through staking their APW.

Later in October, the proposal by Gaspard to add APW Liquid Locker to the SDT gauge (which would provide APW stakers with extra yield) has been voted against by a large SDT stakeholder.

While we are trying to work this out with the Stake DAO team, APW stakers can still enjoy all the benefits of the liquid locker.

Web3 DNA

In late September in Paris, we organized an IRL event for Web3 builders, investors and tech enthusiasts called Web3 DNA.

The headcount exceeded our projections, with people pouring in to hear about the stuff we build. T

his event was co-sponsored with our friends at Sismo, Angle, Morpho, and Paladin. Given the levels of interest during the first edition of Web3 DNA, we plan to make it a more regular event at more spacy venues.

ETHGlobal's Online Hackathon Winners

APWine was one of the pillar sponsors of the biggest Ethereum online hackathons in which developers from across the world competed for prizes.

We've seen multiple submissions, with Napier Finance & NFTD Stablecoin winning $2.5K & $5K of our APW prize pool, respectively. What's more, a No Cost Subscription project that also utilizes APWine made it to the Hackathon's finalists!

APIP 6 & APGP 16

On October 31, Gaspard submitted two proposals, APIP 6 & APGP 16, on APWine’s governance forum pertaining to the retirement of the V1 pools & V1 incentives respectively.

The objective of APIP 6 is to reduce the significant maintenance costs for the flagship app combined with the complexity of 1.0’s contracts, which will soon be obsolete.

APGP 16 suggesting the retirement of V1 incentives could result in less dilution of the current holders while saving treasury reserves that could be used as incentives in the next protocol iteration.

At that time, the primary motivation behind the project was to help DeFi farmers to protect their crops from APY volatility.

However, as we talked to our first users and received genuine feedback on the concept, we realized a strong need for more sophisticated tools for all-things interest rates in DeFi.

After countless hours of coding, researching, and testing, the 1.0 version of the APWine protocol was launched in December 2021 with a broader set of in-app tools.

For the first time in DeFi, users could trade interest rate derivatives, get future yield in advance, or hedge risk by fixing APRs. All of that was made possible with our invention of the Principal Token & Future Yield Token primitives.

The last two years allowed us to take the first steps towards building an active community and governance processes, backed by a solid and effective team while gathering concrete feedback thanks to connections with builders via hackathons and IRL events.

Today, we’re delighted to introduce the next iteration of the protocol code-named 2.0 - a comprehensive redesign that takes key learnings from previous versions, making it a truly modular and inertial protocol for interest derivatives.

Before we continue, a word on the current state of interest rate derivatives in DeFi.

Over the last two years, we’ve witnessed a few attempts at creating yield markets & protocols, although all of them struggled to get meaningful traction. Most of them got stuck at the intersection of low liquidity, complex mechanics, and poor integrations of the yield-bearing strategies.

Overcoming these obstacles is critical to bringing the staggering $8.6 trillion interest rates derivatives market from TradFi to DeFi.

With maturing DeFi and the ever-growing interest in yield-generating opportunities (9500 yield-bearing tokens and counting | Defillama), we are confident that interest rate derivatives will flourish in decentralized finance.

Below we present the core advancements coming with the 2.0 version of the protocol & the flagship app:

Advancements in Detail

🟣 Yield Token & L2 P2P market - a token design on top of which we designed a new market primitive, mainly the P2P L2 Yield Market and the possibility of generating Future Yield Tokens (FYT) of flexible durations, removing previous time modularity constraints.

Until now, due to the expiration and limiting periods of FYTs, it was complicated to use, leverage, and provide liquidity with FYTs.

The Yield Token model is completely free of these constraints thanks to custom durations and features.

For example, a YT token can have a 1-year duration. Out of it, you can easily extract 'January' & 'February' and sell them immediately on the L2 P2P yield market while still being entitled to the future yield accrued between March and December.

The flexibility of the YT mechanisms paired with the efficiency & modularity of the yield market constitutes a significant step for future integrations allowing for precise yield strategies. 

The Future Yield Tokens will continue to exist as they encapsulate yield during two points in time, i.e. a time segment of the Yield Token. Plus, 2.0’s core architecture will still allow for the permissionless creation of FYTs of any duration and form down to a single day. 

🟣 Supercharged Liquidity Provision

Becoming an LP on APWine 1.0 is complicated even for advanced defi users. In 2.0 it will be done flat simply via vaults, where only one asset is required to get started. This form can also be regarded as single staking.

Vaults will have the functionalities of redeploying the liquidity for the user at the expiration of the future thus avoiding complex UX and liquidity fragmentation.

In 2.0, liquidity providers, as opposed to 1.0, won’t have to choose between either APWine’s LP yield or the native platform’s yield. Liquidity providers will be exposed to yield of 1) interest-bearing tokens 2) AMM fees 3) incentives & rewards. 

This will be possible by removing any underlying token in the collateral needed for liquidity providers to keep only yield-generating assets (iBTs).

With this improvement, LPs can be sure that their capital is deployed to the max. efficiency while generating additional yield in the most optimized way.

🟣 Built-in Zaps & Bridges

The 2.0 brings the user experience in APWine’s flagship app to another level. By removing the friction with the need to leave the app to get a specific token, users will have a shorter and safer path to use protocol for their needs.

Zaps enable instant user onboarding by allowing the utilization of any token from their wallet to fix APR or buy directly into interest derivatives via AMM.

For example: fixing rates on staked $PSP will no longer require holding $PSP. Instead, users can do it with any other token in their wallets, like $ETH or $LINK. 

Zaps complete the swap behind the scenes, and the best thing about it is that it all happens in one transaction while providing users with fair rates.

Bridges tackle the crucial challenges we had to work on since the V1. In combination with zaps, a user will not only be able to use 2.0 with any token but also transfer it from L2 in one transaction without the need to leave the app.

With these two features alone, the ease of use of the protocol via the flagship dapp will drastically improve and increase usage.

🟣 Vaults Standards: 4626, 2612, & 5095

With the latest widespread of various ERC & EIPs standards in DeFi, protocols can now 'talk' to each other without requiring developers to create time-consuming adapters and custom solutions.

For 2.0, we have chosen the three standards created by a handful of prominent Web3 wizards from protocols and organizations such as Yearn, Paradigm, and Ethereum Foundation.

ERC-4626: A standard for tokenized vaults lowers the integration effort for yield-bearing vaults. Currently supported by the likes of Yearn, Alchemix, and Balancer will make our protocol an effortless ‘money lego’.

ERC-2612: Tackles one major problem; the lack of abstraction in the EIP-20 [approve method]. Its implementation allows users to sign and permit token transfers in one transaction, vastly improving the protocol's UX.

EIP-5095: Designed to be the standard for Principal Tokens, allowing easy integration of 2.0's Principal Tokens across DeFi.

🟣 Revenue models

One of the core focus of the 2.0 are implementations of various revenue-accruing mechanisms. The research efforts went into exploring the following areas:

• Fees on the yield of the iBTs 

• Performance fees on the vaults

These mechanisms will be implemented in the 2.0’s code from day one and proposed to the DAO in due time, followed by their on-chain implementations with the value of the fee decided by the DAO. 

Stability and profitability for the DAO are a core focus in this new protocol iteration.

Moreover, our tokenomics are being completely reworked to better fit the new protocol version and ever-evolving DeFi. 

With these key improvements listed above, we aim to create DeFi’s #1 protocol for fixed and variable interest rates and debt derivatives.

2.0 Launch

The planned release of 2.0 is in a few months. We reserve the right of announcing a precise date later to remain flexible in the timeline. We want to take the time to only deploy new products that we are absolutely confident about.

At launch, users will be able to utilize protocol advancements via the new flagship dapp. Some of the features might be available shortly after the mainnet release.

First, a word on our recent submarine building mode, which we, hands down, immersed a bit too deep. Today, we are ready to reveal a significant portion of the devoted work we did under the hood in the past months.

We were (and still are) busy building the next version of the protocol.

Yes, it’s coming, and it’s on the mid-term horizon!

While a detailed specification and approximate release date will be announced later this October, we uncover a surface overview of the works, planned implementations, and research below.

Before we jump into the sweetest part, a word on other delayed works like the Arbitrum pools. We didn’t lose sight of these goals at all. Instead, we prioritized the technical improvements included in the next version to enable easy deployments onto other L2s, including Arbitrum.

Those new pools are is still due in the short-term pipeline. Make sure to follow our social channels for updates.

Now, let’s get into advancements coming with the next version of the protocol:

Vault standards: the sign of better times: As DeFi matures, standards start eating the space, which is a good sign for the industry. With planned implementations of a few existing ones, the assets of other projects and protocols will be able to get integrated faster and more seamlessly.

Optimized liquidity provision: liquidity providers won’t be exposed to inefficient mechanisms that bring more impermanent loss to their activity. What’s more, the process of LPing will be vastly simplified without missing on capital efficiency.

Rollovers and expirations are…a painful experience for liquidity providers, and that won’t be the case with an autonomous process offering a fluid LP experience.

Total UI revamp: We’ve heard your voices and are working on a far better UI for our flagship app. Zaps and bridges will offer a more intuitive and seamless experience.

We’re now tirelessly testing user flows internally to ensure you can navigate and utilize the protocol’s possibilities efficiently without the need to leave the app at any point.

FYTs and variable rates derivatives: We redesign from scratch the primitives that we initially brought to encapsulate yield generated and variable rates which you won’t find this design anywhere else in DeFi.

Getting rid of duration constraints impacting the usability and modularity of the derivatives the protocol can generate, thus creating the novel technical components needed for an efficient variable market in DeFi.

Revenue models: The central point of the protocol's next version is the implementation of revenue accruing mechanisms. Much research went into this aspect, and while we will share more details in due time, stability and profitability for the DAO are a core focus in the coming stage.

And a few updates on the organization's frontline:

New ‘A’ hires: A strategic extension round was made to secure the well-being of the project's development. Extreme market conditions did not discourage us from continuing to build a strong team: David Truong (prev. Aave genesis team & Coinbase) is now with us, a Product Manager is coming up and also hired an external pro UX/UI (ex-Google, Spotify, Facebook ) team that assists us in building the new UI.

We are also still hiring for several positions!

Governance: Building decentralized governance is a progressive process with bumps and obstacles. We did important research work on our side on that part, and we will propose a roadmap on that aspect in the coming weeks.

DAO collaboration: Stake DAO’s liquid locker for the APW tokens now allows holders to unleash its full potential across three surfaces: maximizing earnings (yield + bribes), and exercising governance with full voting power while offering liquidity to unwind your sdAPW at ease.

More frequent updates: We are committing to being more transparent about dev works and updates to the community. With plenty of things we worked on soon to be complete, there will be much to share with you!

We recently kicked off our cyclical Web3 event in Paris called Web3 DNA and are soon traveling to Colombia for ETHBogota and Devcon to spread the news about changes coming to the protocol.

All the elements above are crafted in line with our long-term vision of creating a modular and inertial protocol for interest derivatives. With the next protocol version, we efficiently tackle the cross-network and layers approach while focusing on scalability and usability.

We will bring the right tech to truly enable fixed, variable, interest rates and debt derivatives market in decentralized finance.

We want to share two more things with you to end this article with a bang.

While building the APWine protocol for over two years, our developers worked internally on a cool tech of significant importance that we will open and release in due time for the entire DeFi space to be able to benefit from it ⚙️.

2. APGP10 - $APW Rewards for veAPW holders [Executed]

On July 14, the APGP10 has been executed. Following an extensive governance proposal and discussions, the distribution of 250,000 unclaimed $APW tokens among veAPW holders has crystalized.

Over the next 2 years, 250K APW (0.5% of total supply) will be distributed to veAPW holders.

3. A Journey to Arbitrum

The result of the APIP2 dictated the next network deployment for the APWine Protocol.

With over 50% votes, Arbitrum has been chosen as the next stop. Once deployed, APWine will mark the first yield tokenization protocol on this lightning-fast network.

We’re more than happy to see the Arbitrum Network supporting us at the pre-integration stage on Twitter; further boosting awareness of the APWine Protocol.

4. Winelisting #4

The fourth winelisting saw a record-breaking amount of iBTS to vote on. The voting went live at 12:00 PM CET on 13 Jul 2022 and lasted 7 days.

This time, we’ve seen iBT candidates of protocols such as Compound, Angle, Bancor, or Lido. Head over to the official announcement to see the full list.

Winemakers with voting power were able to participate in Winelisting #4 via APWine’s Snapshot or native Dapp.

The winners are yet to be officially announced once all iBTs get integrated into the APWine Protocol.

The idea to distribute APW to veAPW holders was first proposed on May 1, 2022, by Dydymoon on the APWine governance forum.

The proposal’s rationale was to use the unclaimed APW tokens from the genesis airdrop to bootstrap the governance participation.

The vote to add APW rewards for veAPW holders has been put on Snapshot on May 6, 2022. In a unanimous vote, the community voted for the distribution of unclaimed APW to veAPW holders.

What’s next?

The unclaimed APW amounts to 262500 tokens, of which 12500 have been already used to bootstrap the APWine Bounties Initiative.

The APGP10 has been executed on July 14, 2022, and the remaining 250000 (0.5% of the total supply) APW are now being distributed to veAPW holders in the following schedule over the course of the next 2 years.

How to vote

The primary way to vote on your favorite iBT(s) is to lock your $APW token to receive veAPW (token with voting powers). You can lock your APW via APWine’s governance dashboard.

You can lock APW for any duration — from a minimum of one week to a maximum of two years — and receive veAPW, which stands for vote escrowed APW. The longer the lock, the more voting power you will get in the governance.

Dear Winemakers,

We are excited to share the outcome of the latest on-chain governance vote, in which the majority of voters chose Arbitrum as the next destination for the APWine Protocol.

Voting results

First posted by a user CoolGuy on Jan 21, 2022, the APIP 2 sparked week-long discussions between community members weighing the pros and cons of various networks.

Six months later, on Jun 20, the APIP was put to on-chain voting during which all members with veAPW power could cast their votes.

The vote ended on Jun 27 with Arbitrum gaining 50.48% of all casted votes.

Deployment

The result obligates the core APWine members to fulfil the APIP and deploy the protocol on the Arbitrum Network in a timely manner. Given the volatile nature of blockchains, no specific deployment date can be set.

However, the team remains optimistic and aims for mid-Q3 to officially deploy on the Arbitrum network.

Arbitrum in Numbers

With over 51% TVL market share, Arbitrum is currently the fastest-growing layer2. Transaction costs are significantly lower compared to Mainnet and are also near-instant.

DeFi users for whom gas prices on Mainnet are a real challenge will soon be able to get their feet wet with yield tokenization without stressing about high fees.

As the Arbitrum Ecosystem keeps exploding, plentiful interest-bearing tokens are also being deployed into the network. The new land of iBTs integrated into APWine can accelerate the protocol’s growth both in user as well as in TVL terms.

Our governance forum already sees Beefy’s iBTs being discussed.

About Arbitrum

Arbitrum’s architecture uses Optimistic Rollups to bundle all transactions done on the Arbitrum chain, and subsequently posts it on Ethereum. Arbitrum is an optimistic rollup which enables anyone to verify that transactions on Arbitrum are not fraudulent before they are posted on Ethereum through interactive proving. Starting today, liquidity providers no longer need to go through an extra step of staking LP tokens to earn $APW rewards!

It’s time to say goodbye to ‘Stake’ buttons! These boxes will remain for informative purposes only from now on.

What’s new today?

The new mechanism employs liquidity providers with a shorter and simplified path to earn $APW rewards.

Once you deploy liquidity either in PT/FYT or PT/Underlying pool — you’re all set! No need to go through an extra gas-consuming process of staking your LP tokens (and then having to withdraw them again at the end of the period!).

You’ll now find this info box on top of your Portoflio.

All your $APW rewards are now displayed and accumulated in this box. Note it looks a bit different on desktops!

The novel mechanism knows all the LP tokens on your wallet and rewards you accordingly with $APW tokens as if you’ve locked them in APWine’s LP staking contracts.

Rewards now operate in cycles, hence the two labels: Pending Rewards & Available Rewards.

Liquidity providers accrue $APW rewards daily as they used to and can keep track of them in the Pending Rewards section.

Pending rewards are migrated over to the Available Rewards section every seven days. The ‘Claim APW’ button gets you all the available $APW rewards right into your wallet.

It’s important to note that you aren’t required to withdraw the available rewards immediately. You can keep accumulating $APW rewards for as long as you wish and claim them when it suits you.

💡 Liquidity providers that weren’t able to stake their LP tokens because of the migration will be retroactively rewarded with $APW tokens.

No user was missing out on any $APW rewards!🙂

We are excited to see our first period coming to an end. Launched just 3 months ago on Dec 23 2021, today marks the date of the first period switch across various pools.

Background: Pools at APWine operate in cycles. The main reason for this is that the protocol tokenizes yield of a given period in a fixed-duration manner.

Additionally, the DAO can evaluate whether to continue operating a specific pool or adjust its parameters for the next period.

Pools in the first period:

Mainnet: Stake DAO (xSDT), Paladin (PalPoolStkAave), Lido (stETH), Paraswap (sPSP-4), TrueFI(tfUSDC)

Polygon: Aave (amUSDC), Harvest (f-j4EUR), Beefy (mooATriCrypto3)

What happens next?

The period switch affects various actors in the APWine ecosystem. Let’s go through a scenario for each of them.

🏊 Pools:Stake DAO (xSDT): paused for maintenance as the token is now being migrated to a new model.

Harvest (f-j4EUR): to be discontinued due to technical issues.

Other pools remain unaffected and are being rolled to the next cycle.

💧 Liquidity Providers:

Head over to your portfolio page -> Liquidity tab to see your all LP tokens.

Here, you’ll be presented with these options for each LP token:

If you’re farming $APW rewards on the Liquidity page, you’ll first need to hit the ***Unstake ***button to claim these rewards. Second, use the Claim LP button to receive your liquidity back, which will be converted to iBT e.g. aUSDC.

Suppose you wish to continue providing liquidity to that pool. In that case, you can easily do it by depositing your iBT again to the newly created pool to get PT/FYT, then staking them on the liquidity page to receive an LP token.

🔮 Future-Yield Token (FYT) holders:

You’ve made it! You are now entitled to accrued yield during the period.

Head over to your portfolio page -> Future Yield tab to see your all FYT (marked as expired) tokens.

From here, you’re just one button click away from claiming your yield:

🕹️ Principal Token (PT) holders:

One of our platform’s unique cool features is that PT holders get new FYT at the end of the period as they don’t expire. They’re being rolled to the next period and don’t require any maintenance to stay in the game.

Following a successful proposal created in late February, we are excited to announce that the long-awaited liquidity gauges are now live.

On APWine, the $APW inflation is going to users who provide liquidity. Until now, there was a fixed number of $APW pointed at pools across Mainnet & Polygon.

Starting today, it’s now up to our community to vote where the $APW inflation should go. A core function of APWine’s protocol is now in the hands of the people, and we couldn’t be more excited to see it happen!

Winemakers can also reduce the $APW emissions directly, allowing them to balance dilution against additional incentives for liquidity providers.

On this page, you’ll be presented with a liquidity gauge for each individual pool (PT/underlying & PT/FYT).

The logic & outcome of the votes are pretty straightforward:

More votes 👉 higher $APW emissions 👉 higher APY projection in the next cycle.

Gauges operate on a 7-day cycle basis, giving voters more flexibility with experimenting whether higher $APW emissions incentivize liquidity providers or not for a particular pool.

Community votes will be reflected on-chain once the ‘’taking effect in’’ countdown hits zero.

A word on incentives 🍇

Liquidity gauges give the $APW token yet another superpower and a reason for users & DAOs to purchase it on the open market.

If a protocol would like to increase the amount of $APW emissions for their interest-bearing pool on APWine, they first need to acquire $APW and lock it to gain voting power.

How to gain voting power

To vote on liquidity gauges, users first need to lock $APW in the governance dashboard — from here, your voting power will be reflected on the gauges page.

Note: The APWine protocol takes only veAPW into account for gauges, not LP or tAPW tokens.

The gauges page displays pools across all chains. You can vote while being on any chain since the voting system only needs your signature.

APWine core community members will continue to work on various improvements, further optimizing the efficiency of those allocations.
