College education or even a MBA degree cannot prepare you to be an entrepreneur. Having said that, I think a college education and a decent degree is very important in life. Whether you want to be an entrepreneur or not.

Famous college dropouts like Mark Zukerberg, Bill Gates, Richard Branson and others, have made dropping out of college fashionable and hip. But,sadly, this misleads and misguides majority of the youth.

You are asking:

What do I study after 12th to become an entrepreneur?

Which is actually good. Because most youngsters ask:

why should I study, if I want to be an entrepreneur?

Mark Zukerberg, Bill Gates, Richard Branson could afford the risk, can you?

Most youngsters site the examples of these famous college dropouts, who made it big in the world of business. What they perhaps don't realise is, these famous entrepreneurs could have failed in their ventures and even then could be doing OK today, because of their backgrounds or connections.

But the average kid who is thinking of dropping out may not have such a privileged background. Actually, far from it, he may not even have the required capital to start his venture! What will happen if his venture fails after investing all of what he or his family has?

I am not trying to discourage you. But 9 out of 10 new ventures fail. That is a fact. There is no point in denying this eventuality.

May be you will not be a part of that unlucky statistics, but what if you do? With good education, at least you can get a decent job to cover your expenses and living costs. Without a degree you wouldn't have a chance of getting a decent job.

I had started my first venture when I was in college. At first, I did my studies on the side while running my venture. But then, when I couldn't balance the two worlds of entrepreneurship and college education, I just dropped out of the college. I had lot of ups and downs in my venture and in those dark days I don't know how many times I have cursed myself for dropping out of college. I could have easily started my venture 2-3 years later, after completing my degree and it still would have been fine.

Summary:

So what I am saying is, there is no specialization or college education which can prepare you to become an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurship is about doing and learning and of course, failing. If you want to prepare yourself to be an entrepreneur you just pick anything new you may wish to learn and start learning it. The trial and error of learning a new skill will, in a way, prepare you to handle the frustrations of entrepreneurship. Plus you may learn a new skill. If you are planning to start a new venture in the software business, you may learn to write code. But first complete your college education and get that degree. You still have a little more time than you think you have, to prepare yourself to be an entrepreneur.

Hope it helps. Best of luck!
