Decentralization is the driving force of change in most affairs of modern civilization. Society has been subject to both extremes of the pendulum: institutionalized centralization and globalized decentralization. Following decades of highly centralized authority and regimented social order, the pendulum is now sliding back to decentralization. The shift is driven by many factors, with increasingly rapid technologic advancements pushing it further.

The real flippening is happening. Top-down control is becoming bottom-up empowerment. Major institutions are being replaced by software protocols. Even though some of the changes are not here yet, there’s a common thread. From fiat to crypto, from mass media entertainment to AI-generated content, from laws to smart contracts, and from countries to network states.

What drives decentralization is the freedom of exit. The ability to opt out. As Balaji once said, “the internet is reopening the frontier”. There has never been another time with so much opportunity to leave and start something new. With the creation of current and upcoming tools, humans can now reassess, align, and embark on the Frontier.
