Robinhood, the everything app?

The battle for the future of finance just got a lot more interesting. Robinhood dropped three major announcements that continue to signal their intention of becoming the financial institution of choice for the next generation: stock tokens, crypto staking, and their very own L2 built on Arbitrum's stack.

The stock tokens launch immediately sparked controversy when Robinhood announced they would also tokenize private equity from OpenAI, a move that OpenAI quickly denounced. But controversy aside, the strategic bet is clear: Robinhood is positioning itself for the great wealth transfer coming as millennials and Gen Z inherit money from their parents. They're betting that money will live onchain, and while it won't happen all at once, they want to own the distribution.

Their crypto staking offering is perhaps more immediately disruptive, with rates consistently higher than established centralized players. When a platform known for democratizing stock trading starts offering better staking rates than the crypto incumbent, it forces the entire industry to reconsider their value propositions.

And the L2 announcement rounds out their strategy perfectly. By building on Arbitrum's stack, Robinhood gains access to battle-tested infrastructure while maintaining the flexibility to customize their chain for their specific use cases. The details of the chain and its usage are unclear, but it seems obvious that Robinhood believes that it will allow them to capture more revenue per transaction.

If you thought that onchain wasn't eating traditional finance, you're wrong. Robinhood is betting that the distinction between "stocks" and "crypto" will become increasingly meaningless to users who just want access to assets and yield. By building bridges between these worlds – literally tokenizing traditional assets – they're creating a unified financial experience that traditional banks can't match.

The question isn't whether Robinhood will succeed, but how quickly the incumbents will respond.

It's Still Summer. It's Still Onchain.

Onchain Summer is back for year three, and this time it feels different. Gone are the daily drops and mints of previous years. Instead, it seems like we're focused on highlighting the best builders and sprinkling in some big announcements.

The campaign runs July 7th through August 11th, with Base rewarding builders with social distribution and rewards up to $500k. Every week, the top mini apps by usage get featured in tweet-thread roundups, with top teams invited to livestream and showcase their work. The builders of the top performing apps will be invited to Basecamp and honored at the Onchain Summer awards ceremony.

What's compelling about this year's approach is how it mirrors the maturation of the onchain ecosystem itself. Instead of artificially creating scarcity through limited drops, Onchain Summer 2025 is about abundance: giving builders the resources and attention they need to create sustainable value over time.

Previous summers were about introducing people to the possibilities of onchain culture. This summer is about giving them the tools to build it themselves.

The Sloptimistic Take

In a recent conversation with Katie Chiou, Mat Dryhurst offered a perspective on AI-generated content that cuts through the usual anxiety: "sloptimism."

"If AI is going to overwhelm our current valuation mechanisms and cultural incentives: bring it on. I love that idea. I think it's a forcing function for us to reconsider curation of media, to reconsider the valuation of people with interesting contributions."

Dryhurst's argument is that our current cultural incentives are already broken. Musicians and artists are reduced to taking pictures of themselves on Instagram, hoping to seduce someone into engaging with their actual work. "That is a debased understanding of culture," he argues.

His "sloptimistic" take suggests that the overwhelming nature of AI-generated content will force us into making interesting decisions about culture that we should have made a decade ago. When everything can be automated, we'll finally have to figure out what's actually valuable about human creativity and curation.

This perspective feels particularly relevant to the onchain economy where, as Mat mentions, many of these experiments are already happening. Instead of optimizing for engagement metrics that reward the lowest common denominator, onchain systems can be designed to reward taste, curation, and genuine cultural value.

The internet will be filled with slop. Hell, it already is. The question is whether we'll use that forcing function to build better systems for recognizing and rewarding the cultural contributions that matter. Onchain infrastructure gives us the tools to do exactly that.

A New Style for the New Internet

Dom’s recent Bedrock essay, A New Style for a New Internet, is a call to recognize that design is not neutral. The digital world, like the built world before it, is shaped by the values embedded in its forms. The minimalist, modernist aesthetic that has dominated tech for decades is rooted in ideals of efficiency, scalability, and universality. But these ideals flatten difference, strip away context, and ultimately dehumanize.

As AI and decentralized technologies erode the old moats of technical skill and corporate control, the question of taste becomes urgent. Taste, in this sense, is not a matter of surface-level cool or trend-chasing. It is a moral orientation. It is a way of choosing, again and again, what kind of world to build and inhabit.

Today’s onchain builders, like the medieval guilds, have the chance to reclaim this agency. They can choose to make things that are expressive, situated, and alive to the particularities of their communities. The forms we choose—our interfaces, our protocols, our narratives—shape the kinds of relationships and forms of life that become possible. Each design decision is a wager on what kind of internet, and what kind of society, we want to bring into being.

Zora is attempting to solve one of the most persistent problems in creator economies: the misalignment between prolific output and collector incentives.

Instead of betting on individual pieces, collectors can now buy the creator coin – essentially an index representing all underlying assets by that creator. It's portfolio theory applied to digital creativity, allowing collectors to choose their level of exposure whether it's single viral post speculation or long-term creator belief.

For creators building sustainable onchain practices, this could be the infrastructure that finally makes consistent output economically rational.

Software is Content

If you believe that "software is content" and that new platforms will be built around an abundance of content in this new medium, then we're living through a TikTok 2016 moment.

TikTok recognized that short-form video was becoming the dominant content format, and they built the entire platform around making video creation as frictionless as possible. The result was an explosion of creativity that reshaped how we think about social media entirely.

Today, we're seeing the same dynamic with software. Mini apps, AI agents – just as TikTok made everyone a video creator, the emerging infrastructure is making everyone a software creator.

Base, Farcaster, and the broader mini app ecosystem are positioning themselves as the TikTok of software creation. It'll look very different, but if you're paying attention, the game is the same.

Taste deserves to be tipped.

Tipping online has always been a bit of a hassle, limited by poor infrastructure, bad UX, and a scarcity mindset. On Farcaster, we're seeing the rise of programmatic tipping with Noice, where users can reward the curation and creation of meaningful content automatically based on the social actions we're already taking (e.g. likes, recasts, etc.).

As exponentially more people earn their living online—whether through content creation, community building, or digital curation—we need economic systems that can recognize and reward the full spectrum of value creation, not just traditional "content" but the taste, judgment, and cultural intuition that shapes online discourse.

Noice has crystallized this vision perfectly: every like, repost, reply, quote, or follow on Farcaster automatically sends tokens to the original poster. In just three weeks, 1.1 million tips flowed between 4,600 people, with 27,000 earned through the protocol. But the numbers only tell part of the story.

Because Noice is a protocol, it maintains platform independence. Unlike advertising-driven models that lock creators into specific ecosystems, programmatic tipping can flow across any platform that implements the infrastructure. Your taste-making ability becomes a portable asset.

This model also solves the fundamental problem that has plagued creator economies: the inability to reward micro-contributions. A thoughtful comment, a well-timed share, a piece of cultural context that helps others understand—these contributions have always been valuable but never compensated. Programmatic tipping makes the invisible labor of digital culture finally visible and economically meaningful, without overcomplicating the experience.

Startup Abundance

Last week, our editor published an essay titled Startup Abundance, which argued that we're entering an era of entrepreneurial acceleration. "The traditional startup playbook is being rewritten faster than I imagined, and few founders that I talk to are truly prepared for our new reality. We're entering the era of permeable, networked startups – small, nimble entities leveraging AI, onchain infrastructure, and fractional talent to achieve outsized impact."

This shift is most evident in the Mini Apps ecosystem on platforms like Farcaster and Base – applications that frequently gain thousands of users within days without marketing budgets, growth teams, or venture funding. These aren't just "tiny projects" but early indicators of business formation evolution, combining extraordinary capital efficiency, leveraged shared infrastructure, instant distribution through existing networks, and interoperability that allows value to flow between applications. For founders building in this landscape, the focus must shift to maximum permeability, durable community assets, equity fluidity, and composable building blocks that can rapidly evolve as circumstances change.

At Farcon, Everyone Was Building Miniapps

Farcon 2025 just wrapped up in NYC, and one thing became abundantly clear: mini apps are having their moment.

One way to think about mini apps, which was mentioned by Dan Romero of Farcaster, is that they represent the top of the funnel, serving as intuitive entry points to more robust applications. As the image above illustrates, they function much like TikToks do for YouTube videos – providing quick access and fast attention that can lead users to deeper engagement.

The Seed Club Mini App Spotlight showcased some of the ecosystem's most promising projects:

• Acid Test: A radio show bringing music, conversation and creative energy to Farcaster. Every episode is an open edition that can be collected for one week.

• Amps: The app that helps you get paid when friends post. People can pay you a fixed amount for an automatic recast or like on their post.

• Clankermon: A Farcaster-native version of Pokémon that has cultivated a passionate community of players trading and battling their digital creatures.

• Tab: Social payments on Farcaster. Pay and split the bill with your friends.

• Pods: An onchain podcasting platform that's revolutionizing how creators distribute and monetize audio content.

• ...and so many more.

The mini app revolution is just beginning, and Farcaster and Base are positioning themselves as the foundation on which this new economy will be built.

The DeFi Mullet

Bitcoin-backed loans of up to $1M are now available to everyone in the US, marking a significant milestone in the maturation of mainstream DeFi.

This innovation represents what some call the "DeFi mullet" — a sleek consumer-facing interface in the front, with the deep technical aspects of DeFi hidden in the back.

What makes this development truly revolutionary is how it democratizes access to financial services traditionally reserved for the ultra-wealthy. The strategy known as "borrow, borrow, die" has long been used by the wealthy to leverage their assets without triggering taxable events. Now, everyday Bitcoin holders can access similar strategies.

As adoption grows, we may see regional economic corridors emerge around complementary DeFi products, creating new financial relationships that bypass traditional gatekeepers entirely. That's fundamentally reimagining what "banking" means in a world where financial services can be both locally relevant and globally connected.

Exciting times indeed.

The Circular Economy

Farcaster's tipping culture has become the foundation of a thriving circular economy that has brought new life to the community.

The combination of Warpcast rewards, Tipping Tuesdays, and in-app tipping mechanisms has created an incredibly rich economic system where users are incentivized not just to create quality content, but to discover and amplify it as well.

This isn't necessarily new – last year, $DEGEN became the de facto currency for recognizing quality contributions.

What made this tipping culture unique is that users receive daily allocations that must be given away – creating a "use it or lose it" dynamic that encourages constant circulation of value. As one Farcaster user described it: "Degen is basically the currency of Farcaster that makes the world go round - people are constantly tipping it to each other - 'lmao good post, 3000 $degen.'"

On the other hand, this new tipping culture is fueled by USDC directly hitting people's in-app wallets, which they are incentivized to use in mini apps and to tip to their friends.

This model stands in stark contrast to traditional social media, where engagement primarily benefits the platform rather than creators or curators. In Farcaster's circular economy, value flows directly between participants, creating positive-sum relationships where everyone can benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, this circular economy is creating entirely new forms of onchain identity and reputation. Your tipping history becomes a visible record of your taste and values, allowing users to build social capital in ways that transcend traditional follower counts.

As this model continues to evolve, we're seeing the emergence of a truly onchain renaissance – one where economic and social systems are designed to maximize both individual creativity and collective flourishing.

Base is for Now

Our inagural essay, Base is for Now, was penned by Base's Head of Global Builders, Xen Baynham-Herd. "When you choose where to build, you're not just selecting a tech stack. You're joining a network." Xen then dives into what makes Base technically great:

"With Flashblocks delivering 200ms transaction speeds, simplified developer tools like MiniKit and OnchainKit, and Smart Wallet enabling minutes-to-transaction user onboarding, Base combines technical excellence with genuine community purpose. As expansion continues through initiatives like Base East Africa and plans for 20+ country launches this year, Base isn't just building infrastructure—it's cultivating a movement where builders worldwide can create sustainable value in an economy designed for everyone."

At its core, Base offers what serious builders need most: technical excellence serving an ambitious purpose. It is an environment where anyone can plug in and get the resources they need to pursue this vision.

Exciting times ahead. Base is for now.

Stablecoins are having an Oprah moment

It seems like everyone’s jumping into the stablecoin race, and it’s no surprise—not only is USDC adoption chugging higher, but local stablecoins are stealing the spotlight. The Base team is making sure that these currencies are getting a front-row seat in the new Coinbase Wallet. Financial systems that once locked out entire regions are losing their grip, opening doors to seamless trade, remittances, and wealth-building for people everywhere.

“Onboarding the masses” doesn’t mean that everyone will start using the onchain economy all at once – local stablecoins are also a useful, practical way, to onboard users one set of citizens at a time.

There’s a psychological component here as well. Economic sovereignty matters. Local stablecoins offer everyday users the psychological comfort of familiarity while simultaneously introducing them to blockchain's capabilities. Local stablecoins act as translation layers between existing financial mental models and the onchain economy.

As adoption grows, we may see regional economic corridors emerge around complementary local stablecoins, creating new trade relationships that bypass traditional financial gatekeepers entirely. That’s fundamentally reimagining what “banking” means in a world where currency can be both locally relevant and globally connected.

Exciting times.

Fix the Money

Everyone’s favorite Ethereum Intern posted an ad for the onchain economy last week, and it resonated heavy. Why transact onchain? Because its cheaper, more rewarding, and impossible to censor. It works like the internet does.

If I were to create a global ad campaign for Ethereum, this feels directionally correct. Money is broken. The internet has changed the lives of every single person on Earth – our financial systems must evolve as well.

By positioning Ethereum alongside the internet—a technology we've collectively internalized as essential—it sidesteps the entire "crypto bro" narrative. There’s also the subtle shift from asking users to rebel against institutions to simply making the rational choice for themselves. It's not ideological; it's practical. This framing avoids the libertarian baggage that alienates mainstream adoption while still delivering its core value proposition.

Just as no one today debates whether the internet was worthwhile, the ad suggests the same inevitability for the onchain economy.

Intern followed up with another one: "Stop using banks."

"Ethereum is the internet of money," they said. "You get zero payment limits, near-zero fees and keep total custody of your own money."

Some teams seemed to resonate. Splits, for example, argued that their product Teams is "your interface to the Bank of Ethereum."

I'm a bigger fan of the initial ad, but I hope to see this experimentation with messaging continue.

Cohort Futures

I often return to this post from Brian Dell and Tom Critchlow called “Cohort Futures.”

Cohorts compound focus. When a group of people working on separate endeavors all focus on the same frame, the entire group benefits.

The primary difference between a community and a cohort is that the first is oriented around the relationships between the collective members, and the second is oriented around the progress of each individual. In short, communities are built to connect, cohorts are built to progress.

From early social DAOs to global hackathons to Farcaster's builder scene today, both formal and informal 'cohorts' have been critical to crypto's development thus far.

What makes cohorts uniquely powerful is their capacity to create high-bandwidth knowledge transfer networks. Unlike formal documentation or scattered Twitter threads, cohorts transmit tacit knowledge—the unwritten rules, mental models, and technical intuitions that accelerate innovation. Insights that might take months to diffuse through traditional channels spread within hours.

This explains why certain scenes seem to consistently produce breakthroughs—they're drawing on accumulated social capital and shared context from previous cohort experiences.

With this in mind, some awesome cohort experiments launched or shared updates this week.

Atrium Academy blends three powerful elements: the curation of an accelerator, the spirit of a hackathon, and the intensity of a bootcamp. Currently focused on Uniswap v4 Hooks, the team looks to expand to other protocols as they help software infra teams onboard and activate developers.

Individual companies ran this playbook as well. Tapestry's Solana Social Accelerator demonstrates how focused attention on a small group of builders can connect teams, creators, and community to integrate new features and build better UX fast.

Most recently, Base announced both Base Batches, which moves the best teams from a global hackathon to a focused incubator with its own Demo Day where builders compete for cash. The tight feedback loop between buildathon and incubator makes Batches a unique opportunity.

Finally, Alliance is teaming up with Base on a $500k hackathon in SF, with the winners getting immediate admission into the next Alliance accelerator. Alliance is another great example of a time-bounded, high-context environments that compress years of learning into weeks through intensive collaboration.

The most resilient tech isn't just technically sound—it's socially embedded within these overlapping cohort networks, where innovation diffuses at speeds traditional structures can't match.

• Flipp launched: an easy-to-use crypto app that lets you watch, track and swap any coins.

• Blackbird – the onchain restaurant loyalty app – raised $50M in a new funding round.

The onchain economy needs a coherent vision for the future, cultivated and articulated by us. That’s what we’re working toward with Bedrock.

Bedrock is a publication writing the future of the onchain economy. We believe that Base is establishing the cultural foundations—the bedrock—for an onchain renaissance: a new economy that fully leverages what the internet and Ethereum have to offer. 

We’re here to bring that vision to the world.

When we talk about building an "onchain economy for everyone," what does that mean? What new organizational models become possible? How do we ensure accessibility and inclusion? What governance structures best serve these communities? What values must we uphold? Are business models going to shift? And how do other frontier technologies – from AI to energy – fit into the equation?

These questions require thoughtful discourse and exploration—precisely what Bedrock aims to provide.

Bedrock's mission centers on three key objectives:

1. Shape the cultural narrative for the onchain economy. We want to give people something to believe in. By fostering conversation and promoting the most creative, promising ideas from onchain builders and thinkers, we aim to lay the foundations for a truly unique and inspiring narrative of an onchain future.

2. Spotlighting builders and providing the narrative context that helps their work reach the masses. We won’t just be talking about Base, but we believe that Base is the current home for serious builders creating real onchain products with a vision of a better future. Beyond speculative cycles, we highlight teams building sustainable solutions addressing real-world needs.

While we hope to expand to many forms of media in the near future, we believe that great longform writing is both scarce and necessary for the formation of a rich onchain culture.

Through a focused editorial approach, Bedrock will serve as the ideological home for the onchain ecosystem:

• Bedrock Newsletter: A focused, opinionated digest of news, fundraising, and curated ideas with analytical commentary—setting the pulse for our ongoing conversation.

• Essays: Thought-provoking analytical pieces exploring ideas, opinions, business models, onchain philosophy, and market evolution. These 1000-2000 word explorations aim to build a strong cultural foundation for the onchain economy.

• Profiles: Deep dives into select teams and projects combining world-class storytelling with technical substance.

Each piece maintains high editorial standards with an emphasis on substantive insights over hype. Our work is designed to serve both immediate informational needs and create long-term value for the ecosystem.

Our ecosystem needs those who articulate a vision of the future just as much as it needs those who build it. When these forces work in harmony—when builders are supported by compelling narratives and thoughtful visions—that’s when the future we want to see can really be built.

Bedrock is a conversation. We invite builders, thinkers, and community members to contribute their perspectives, challenge assumptions, and help us collectively define what an onchain future should look like.

By creating a space that amplifies builders and shapes our collective ideas, we hope to play our part in bridging the gap between onchain and the rest of the internet.
