Why I Don’t Shop by Race, Gender, or Guilt Trips…

The other week, someone told me I should try a woman-owned Pilates studio. I told her I already have an Equinox membership. It gives me access to multiple locations across the U.S., a steam room, sauna, and unlimited classes — for the price of five at her studio.

She asked, “But you’re a woman, right? Don’t you have a business? Then shouldn’t you want to support a woman-owned business?”

I told her: No. Not because I’m against anyone — but because I don’t make decisions based on guilt, identity, or emotional manipulation.

My business is a business. I don’t need you to support me because of who I am. Support me because I’m excellent. Support me because the product delivers. Because the experience is worth your money. Otherwise, don’t.

There’s a growing trend where businesses lead with identity instead of value.

Race. Gender. Sexual orientation. These labels are being used as marketing hooks, but they don’t create longevity. They may attract initial attention or fit within a social narrative, but they don’t build brand trust.

I’m not moved by who owns the business. I’m moved by what the business creates.

A strong brand doesn’t rely on emotional pressure or identity politics to thrive. It delivers results. It creates resonance. It stands on its own.

When your business model depends on being seen as marginalized, it limits your growth. Because now you’re expected to perform identity rather than provide excellence. You’re building a brand on visibility, not value.

I don’t want my business to be seen through the lens of my identity.

Not my race. Not my gender. Not any label that people try to assign.

I want my work to be recognized for its quality, intentionality, and design. That’s it.

My candle brand is not a niche product. It’s not spiritual, seasonal, or identity-based. It’s a luxury brand. I’m building it with the same attention to detail and long-term vision as the most respected names in the industry.

The value of what I create isn’t rooted in who I am — it’s rooted in what I’ve made. When someone lights one of my candles, they’re not buying into a narrative. They’re entering an experience.

Identity may open a door, but it won’t keep it open. Longevity is built on substance.

If your business only thrives because people feel obligated to support it, then it was never truly stable to begin with.

I’m not interested in being categorized. I’m interested in building something that transcends trends, hashtags, and expectations. Something that stands on its own, whether or not someone agrees with who I am.

Excellence speaks for itself.

So if you’re building something — make it excellent. Don’t ask people to support you. Give them something undeniable. Something unforgettable. Let your work become the reason they stay.

That’s how you create a legacy

There’s a strange moment that happens when you realize people are still watching you through an outdated lens.

Not because you invited them to. Not because you’re trying to provoke them. But simply because… you exist. Fully. Authentically. Without apology.

Yesterday, I saw a comment from someone I haven’t spoken to in nearly a decade. Someone who once tried to insert themselves into my life through fake friendship and quiet jealousy. Someone I forgot about. But clearly—they never forgot about me.

And that’s when it hit me:

There are people who are still obsessed with versions of me that no longer exist.

People who don’t want to know me… just narrate me.

People who resent that I walked away, gave no closure, offered no performance—and left them with nothing but silence.

And somehow, they’re still talking.

The Truth About Magnetism

I never asked to be the main character in their story.

But I’ve learned that when you carry real magnetism, people will write entire narratives around your presence—especially when they can’t access you anymore.

My energy has always spoken louder than my words. I’ve always drawn attention without trying, stirred reactions without meaning to. And for a long time, I didn’t understand that. I thought maybe I was the problem. Maybe I was too much.

So I dimmed myself. Softened my tone. Chose “safe” friendships over aligned ones. I let people close just because they showed interest—without asking if their interest came from love, or from lack.

I was being studied, not seen.

Watched, but not witnessed.

And when I finally chose to walk away from it all… that’s when the obsession started.

The Shadow of Obsession

The obsession isn’t flattering—it’s disturbing.

Because it’s not rooted in admiration. It’s rooted in control.

There are people who didn’t value me when they had access, and now that I’m gone, they retell our history like a ghost story.

I’m the “bad guy” in their version.

The one who was “too confident,” “too distant,” “too much.”

But really, I was just too free to play the role they wanted to cast me in.

They stalk my pages. Whisper my name. Craft narratives where I’m running, hiding, scared—when the truth is, I’ve been at peace.

I didn’t fight them because they weren’t worth fighting.

I didn’t respond because I was already gone.

I didn’t explain because closure isn’t a gift I owe to those who mishandled me.

Their obsession is a loop.

Mine is liberation.

The Nicki Minaj Parallel

I’ve always resonated with women like Nicki Minaj.

Women who are misunderstood because their energy is too potent to package.

Women who are accused of being “intimidating” when really, they just stopped explaining themselves.

Women who are stalked, studied, obsessed over—not because they asked for attention, but because they dared to take up space.

Nicki once said, “You’re not mad at me. You’re mad at yourself. And I’m just the mirror.”

That line lives in my body.

Because I know what it feels like to be turned into a threat for simply choosing myself.

To have people mistake my silence for guilt.

To have people who once clung to me now cast me as the villain—because I no longer shrink for their comfort.

I’m not the “too much” one.

I’m just the one who stopped asking for permission to be seen.

Where I Stand Now

I’m no longer diluting myself to make others feel comfortable.

I’m no longer offering closure to people who lost access to me through their own behavior.

And I’m definitely no longer carrying the weight of other people’s projections.

Let them tell their stories. Let them run their scripts.

That version of me? She’s gone.

And I’m not explaining her disappearance.

I’m choosing my peace over their obsession.

My truth over their gossip.

My power over their permission.

If my presence triggers you, that’s between you and your shadow.

Not me.

Affirmation

I no longer apologize for being unforgettable.

I release the need to be understood by those who never saw me clearly.

My magnetism is mine to honor, not shrink.

If this resonates and you want to support or anchor this moment into your journey, you can collect this piece here on Mirror.
