I get the feeling more than ever. It’s no longer a gentle itch, but a festering scab in my mind.

This feeling that some of our core human traits and our critical thinking skills are being drained from us. Whether it’s the cognitive power we now lean on AI for instead of trusting our own minds, or the distracting dopamine hits that are being blasted at us from all angles and desensitizing us to some of the brutal realities that define our modern world.

We are handing the reigns of our humanity to technology. While this is often quite empowering, are we sure it’s not going to bite us in the ass? We are playing blissfully with a double edged sword that might just sever us from what makes us human in an attempt to cut corners and bypass some of the seemingly dull or difficult work.

Take a look at the state of AI, and how we are using this transformative new tech. We’re not just doing some arithmetic or writing some sales emails. We are taking deeply personal and creative work and asking a machine to churn it out for us. The US president seemingly deep faked his Charlie Kirk announcement video, and his son Don Jr clearly ChatGPT’d his response tweet. A close personal friend was executed live on TV, and they ran to an LLM to help them spin up a public response. That is fucking wild to me.

Then we have the more standard, day to day usage of AI that many people lean on. This is quickly leading to Dead Internet 2.0, a place where all content smells and feels similar, is “optimized” for other AI to consume, and completely lacking of soul or personality. This is turning the internet into a sterile wasteland of robot speak and bot-like content.

But who’s it for? Who’s it benefitting?

If your art, your writing, your story has to pass through an AI middleman just to reach another person…what are we really building?

If you’re getting your news and content recommendations from an algorithm…who wants you to consume that really?

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what we are sacrificing for the ease of work with AI and algorithms. I see it daily. People trading what makes them human (creating, thinking, discovering) for speed and algorithmic convenience. That comes with a cost.

What We’re Losing

Creativity and Ownership

A study published in The Journal of Creative Behavior found that people feel less creative when using AI tools, even when the output looks objectively “better.” Why? Because the process gets stripped away. The sense of ownership fades. We eliminate our soul from the process. (PsyPost)

The work is technically yours but you didn’t make it. You prompted it. That’s just not the same.

Income and Risk in Creative Fields

The music and audiovisual sectors are projected to lose 24 percent and 21 percent of creator revenues by 2028 due to generative AI substitution. That’s billions disappearing from the hands of real people. (CISAC Report)

This isn’t hypothetical anymore. It’s already happening.

Critical Thinking Erosion

A study from MIT Media Lab revealed that people using ChatGPT for essay tasks experienced lower neural engagement, weaker memory, and less originality than those who wrote independently. (TIME)

It’s not just a shortcut. It’s a slow decay.

Even Search is Eroding Our Thinking

New research out of the University of Cologne shows that people relying on AI-generated search answers are significantly more likely to accept those answers without question, even when they’re false. That’s not augmentation. That’s surrender. (Nature Human Behaviour, 2024)

We are slowly losing our grip on our internal filter.

The Algorithm Is Shaping Your Reality

Algorithms are designed to keep you engaged. Not informed. Not inspired. Just locked into the doom scroll.

They prioritize what’s proven to keep people scrolling. That means more outrage. More dopamine. More rapid ups and downs and blasts of emotion that keep you hooked.

We’re not seeing stories because they’re important. We’re seeing them because they generate clicks for a big tech monster corp.

As Prince once said:

“The internet's like a black hole. It uses us, we don't use it.”

And he said that twenty years ago.

Now that black hole is personalized. Optimized. And feeding off our attention at scale.

Are We Creating for Humans or for AI?

This is the next trap.

As AI becomes the discovery layer for everything (music, blogs, books, videos) creators will feel forced to optimize for what AI recommends.

That means more SEO. More keyword matching. More predictability. Less personality.

The result? We end up creating content that’s not meant to connect with real people. It’s just designed to pass through another machine’s filter.

That’s the separation. The quiet divide. When people stop talking to each other and start chatting it up with robots in hopes the robots will deliver them to someone else.

It’s a soul-level loss.

How Founders and Creators Can Stay Human Without Rejecting AI

Here’s what I’m doing. You don’t have to adopt all of it, but pick something. Try it. Hold the line where it matters.

Create First. Polish Later

Write, sketch, or speak before the machine gets involved. Let your raw voice come through. Use AI only to refine, not to originate.

Define Your Soul Rules

Know your non-negotiables. For me, it’s voice. It’s values. It’s the philosophical questions. I won’t hand those off.

What’s your red line?

Break the Algorithm Frame

Read things that piss you off. Watch films no one recommends to you. Talk to people who don’t think like you.

And now and then, make something that no one will ever see. Just for you. Just for the love of the process.

Balance Speed with Depth

AI is fast. But not everything should be.

Give time to emotions. Let nuance unfold. Let big ideas breathe. Not everything needs to be a sprint.

Guardrails and Reflection Points

Ask yourself weekly: Did I feel like a human this week, or a content machine?

Ask yourself monthly: Which tools do I still believe in? Which ones am I using just to keep up?

Why I’m Writing This. Yes, It’s Personal.

Because I’ve felt it. The ghost in the shell. The creeping doubt after using AI too much in a week.

I ask: Is this still me? Or is this just what performs?

The more we rely on tools, the easier it is to lose our taste, our voice, our weirdness. That’s what I’m afraid of losing. We must remain weird, cringe, different, off.

If founders and storytellers give up our weirdness, if we all become output machines, what are we even building?

Final Thought: Use AI. But Don’t Let It Use You.

AI is a tool. Maybe the most powerful we’ll ever hold.

But the real test isn’t how many tools you use. It’s whether they serve your purpose, or whether you’ve lost your purpose in the process.

Don’t outsource your soul.

Don’t outsource your curiosity.

Don’t outsource your humanity.

We can make beautiful things with tech. But only if we remember why we’re making them in the first place.

Let’s keep creating with conviction. Thinking for ourselves. And standing up for what feels real, not what’s optimized.

Subscribe

I have to keep it honest, these last few weeks have completely burned me out.

It can be exhausting as a founder (also incredibly energizing), but my latest burnout phase hasn’t come from the long hours or the juggling of tasks. It’s coming from the pace of AI.

Every day there’s a new tool, a new update, another stack to learn. New LLMs, visual tools, voice agents, and new MCP releases. Claude 3.7 flew into orbit like it’s nothing. I mean shit, there are 2,000+ generative AI tools out there already, and that number only grows (ArtSmart).

Staying current hasn’t felt empowering lately. It feels like anxiety. Like a hamster wheel that's speeding up without warning.

Part of this overwhelm comes from what I also see on the horizon… the impending singularity and the very real threat that AI holds over many jobs and businesses. Not to mention, it’s nearly impossible to know which tools and processes will become obsolete in the coming months as this space moves so fast.

But, as a founder, I also understand that burnout is temporary. Solutions exist in your ability to remain balanced, build systems that keep growth structured, and stick to the Japanese principle of Kaizen (striving for steady, 1% improvement).

AI Overload Hits Hard

AI adoption is surging
→ 35% of people now use AI tools daily and over 84% increased their usage in the past year.
(Source: Exploding Topics)

But burnout is real
→ 66% of employees familiar with AI tools report feeling overwhelmed.
(Source: Medium)

Even leadership isn’t immune
→ C-suite execs are quietly drowning under AI expectations from innovation pressure to ethical risks.
(Source: Artiba)

Ironically, AI often adds more load than it removes
→ Radiologists using AI are 39% more likely to be burnt out than those who don’t.
(Source: The Muse)

Why This Matters to Founders

As founders, we’re expected to see around corners.

AI is reshaping every corner of how we create, distribute, and sell.

We need to understand what’s coming next but we can’t out-hustle the algorithm. This moment demands strategy over speed.

Many founders think the game is about keeping up with every new feature. But real power comes from understanding patterns, not drowning in details. You don't need to master every tool, you need to build a framework that allows you and your team to test, adopt, and adapt quickly without losing focus.

Burnout in this environment isn’t just about exhaustion. It's about decision fatigue, uncertainty overload, and the existential fear of missing a shift in the tech stack that could impact your product, your team, or your entire value prop.

In a time of exponential innovation, clarity is leverage.

So here’s how I’m getting mine back.

How to Beat AI Burnout

1. Bookmark the ones that look interesting, but don’t test them, don’t compare them, don’t build with them. Your brain needs boundaries to recover clarity.

Pro Tip:
Make a “Not This Week” folder in Notion or Apple Notes. Dump links and tweets there guilt-free.
The infrastructure is here. The builders never left. And for those of us who still see NFTs as the rails of a creator-owned internet… the fun part might be about to start all over again.

DISCLAIMER: I believe NFTs are a technology that will be integrated across most applications, saas products, content platforms, social media platforms, and beyond. Not simply a JPEG or a piece of art, but infrastructure that will redefine digital ownership across the internet. So that is my perspective before diving into this piece. Enjoy.

Gahtdamn do I remember the glory days of 2021.

Discovering NFTs via VeVe collectibles (a now nearly dead project), buying a 3d AR delorian, and immediately deepening my understanding of why digital ownership is the future. With each passing day, our lives are becoming increasingly digital. That requires new systems to enforce the protections on our work and assets. With the metaverse quickly approaching, NFTs started to make a lot of sense.

It was a fun time. I won big, I lost big. NFTs took over my world for a full year.

As a musician, it wasn’t difficult for me to resonate with the value proposition of NFTs for creators…

Verified Ownership

Provenance of creative work

P2P transactions, directly between you and your audience

Secondary market royalty potential

Tech layers that deepen creative expression

This is just scratching the surface, but it all just clicks.

BUT… it was all a massive bubble and boy did that bubble pop.

By 2022 the dump was in motion. The crypto bull run had ended, with a bear market on the horizon. NFTs got hit harder than most digital assets. The insane speculation surrounding the tech got so far out of hand, scammers and money grabbers were moving in and out of the space quicker than you can say hi.

This left the NFT community in ruins and vibes sucked ass for the next few years. People weren’t making money so the engagement dried up. Everyone labeled NFTs as a crypto bro scam, and innovation really seemed to slow down.

However, if you’ve stuck around through that time, you’ve surely seen many shining lights leading through decisive action. While hype drained out, these projects proved that conviction, creativity, and utility could still thrive.

Pudgy Penguins Despite the broader NFT market’s freefall, Pudgy Penguins doubled down on brand storytelling and real-world expansion, rolling out licensed plush toys in major retailers like Walmart and Target, launching the fan-powered $PENGU token ecosystem, and building the Abstract layer‑2 network to fuel gaming, experiences, and on‑chain commerce. These moves transformed it from a fading PFP collection into a resilient Web3 super‑IP.

Deadfellaz Through the lull of the market, Deadfellaz kept its momentum alive via bold initiatives like the Coldlink verification tool, the upcoming Death Touch trading-card game, and the Wallhugger game on Roblox. They capped it off with the minting of the Ghost Machine collection, 50,000 “hyper-pop art” NFTs priced at just $1 on ApeChain, for existing holders, reaffirming community-first innovation.

OxCopy Legendary crypto‑artist XCOPY stayed relevant by continuing to release groundbreaking, deeply coded art, even amidst bearish sentiment. His 2024 “Cope Salada” drop leveraged the Shape L2 chain for fully on‑chain, dynamic vector art, and his longstanding commitment to platforms like SuperRare (preserving creator royalties) underscored his role as a cultural anchor and defender of crypto‑art infrastructure.

NFTs = A Tool for Creative Innovation

True believers mustered the strength to continue building and pushing the space forward. As someone who has remained here, albeit not deep in the trenches, but always learning and exploring, these builders kept the hope alive. I never lost my vision for NFTs, but the challenges of life (earning a living and supporting myself) often slowed my involvement in the space.

The reality is that some of the coolest, most interesting avenues of creative expression are being explored onchain and that is something that I can never forget about, despite what market conditions might look like. Because I’m not here for the financial speculation as much as I’m here for the creative expression and self soverignty made possible through blockchain.

Now, on this date of August 11th 2025, our JPEGs are bubbling back to life. A sign of a potential NFT return. This is beyond exciting for those of us who have been here and believe in the potential of the space.

But why are people claiming NFTs are back, and what does that mean for the space moving forward?

July 2025 On-Chain Momentum

NFT Flips DeFi User Activity (Source: DappRadar)

Just a few weeks ago, NFTs felt like they were gasping for air, markets cool, chatter faded, and a nagging question: Is this thing still alive?

But then July came along.

According to DappRadar, NFT trading volume spiked 96% in July, hitting about $530 million, and even outpaced DeFi in user activity.

This journey that I've embarked on is focused around music NFTs, and bringing the creative masses on chain. Over the last few years in this web3 space, I've seen so many creators avoid jumping in, as many artists are turned off by some of the activity happening here. Just look at everything with the "Chill Guy" artist, and how he avoids entering the space entirely, despite massive bags waiting for him.

I believe artists should be inspired by the potential that blockchain represents, and that's a major reason for kicking off this experiment. This tech is empowering, it eliminates middlemen that notoriously siphon value from artists, and positions creators to thrive beyond anything previously possible. So that's what I want the world to see.

In this spirit, as part of this grand experiment, I will be doing what I love to do most...creating music.

BUT FIRST...

Subscribe

The Project, Explained

This will take the form of Music NFTs. 1/1 pieces, small collections, collab collections, anything that inspires me and the artists I work with. A lot of these pieces will be free or very affordable, as accessibility is something that I believe deserves prioritization as we in web3 look to onboard others. Too many mainstream audiences think that NFTs are this inaccessible financial investment that requires hundreds or thousands of dollars to jump in. But that isn't the case.

So instead of selling all of this music for a crazy price, my team has decided to accept bribes instead. Tokens, NFTs, any chain, any asset. Help the cause in any way you can, and fuel this music machine. In return, I promise to create as much music as I possibly can for as long as I can. We will create a leaderboard of the biggest supporters, with some receiving unique pieces from us in return. All of this is a giant experiment that I hope inspires others to enter the space.

It will be a massive challenge, but a fun one. So if you're into it, here's how you can support:

Send token or NFT bribes to these wallets...

⚡️SOL⚡️

92Mh5cSJ8EAqJnwXZFjdZhUJwt9SrFffwAeEvX6oLpxP

⚡️ETH & BASE⚡️

0x88D6BE898D2cd43eb190631AE1724ABA567aB5dc

⚡️BITCOIN⚡️

bc1qsk80nqxp5f240quwk5rgeurw0yht5n0s8z5sh0

The wallets are here for everyone to see. Let's have some fun together, and inspire the next generation of artists to innovate and build using blockchain.

Your support means more than I can express. My entire life I've spent dreaming of a world where I can spend my days creating music, and show others how to do the same. Crypto has this power. I feel it in my bones. I hope others feel the same.

Who is BlacktopMEGA?

BlacktopMEGA aka Blacktop Megaphone aka MEGAPHONE is my alias as a music producer. I've been composing and producing music under this name since my debut album in 2014 (which you can find across spotify, apple music, and youtube... some linked below) - But my journey started long before that....

Since I was 13 years old I've dreamt of a life in which music was my career. Playing in punk rock bands and jam bands, spending hours just exploring songwriting with my childhood friends. It all was dreamlike and fueled by a fantasy of global music domination.

Now, in my mid-thirties, I can say things didn't go exactly as planned. From struggling gigging bassist, to uninspired attempts at scoring corporate commercials, and many records produced that never quite hit...The journey of a musician can be brutal. But the process is what's most important, and the process is what brought me to where I am today... an explorer of on-chain innovation. And this is something I find great joy in.

It was through these failed attempts at building a music career that I really learned to create art in a way that fed my soul, regardless of how others defined "success". As a man working to build a future for myself, I've charted a different course over the last few years. I've learned to take my creativity and monetize it through content production for businesses that I find interesting. From web3 to cannabis and many industries in between, I've spent the last few years building a company that afforded me the ability to remain creative while still supporting myself and building something that inspires me.

Discovering On-chain Music

During this time I still dabbled with music, but only on rare occasions did I find myself creating in ways that felt truly powerful. One of those rare occasions was the development, production, and minting of one of ETH's first programmatically generated music NFT collections... GM:MF

My brother and I teamed up for this project, as I saw everything happening with PFP collections and applied the same logic. Instead of visual traits, we used audio traits. Drums, synths, sfx, melodies, all assigned levels of rarity and programmatically generated using an app that we custom developed. Launching this collection changed everything I thought I knew about music, adding in new tech layers and exploring new ways to connect with audiences.

GM:MF dropped in 2021/2022, just in time to generate some buzz, but not soon enough to avoid the brutal bear market. As such, we paused the finalization of the collection to keep the supply more limited and await the next opportunity to bring the project back. As independent artists, both my brother dug. and I found ourselves needed to look for income elsewhere, and the project became stagnant. However we never gave up hope, and now are working on finalizing this collection.

More to come on this, but check it out here: https://opensea.io/collection/gmmf

The Resurrection

After GM:MF my music career has been in hibernation, as I focused on my company and creating content for businesses. But today, I'm returning... and with fucking vengeance. Im determined more than ever to create music and inspire others to do the same. And Web3 is the way. Whether it takes 5 months, or 5 years, or more. Im doing it. For myself, and for those that want to join the journey.

So with that, I invite you to join us. We will make music. We will make art. We will explore tech. And we will have a damn good time. For the love of the fuckin game, and to buy more sandwiches so we can all feast on tasty snacks while enjoying life.

More incoming. Stay tuned. Stay blessed.

Subscribe

Share

Some MEGAPHONE MUSIC...But F*CK SPOTIFY FR

<div data-type="embedly" src="https://open.spotify.com/artist/1lxNcmnqsiO7g9F8a0U9P5?si=n4dGEOPHRbymNS9dwAyH5A" data="{"provider_url":"https://spotify.com","description":"Listen to Blacktop Megaphone on Spotify.
