In December we opened Bonfire to everyone, and today, with NFT Drops — the latest addition to our tool stack — creators can start and expand their community with new collections more easily than ever. NFT Drops is designed to be simple and intuitive, making it quick and easy for anyone to launch their next collection.

Last Sept we announced our integration with Sound protocol, enabling artists on Sound to import their music drops to Bonfire and design bespoke minting experiences for collectors on their own site, and we’ve been blown away by the response.

At the time, this was the entirety of our ambition for this integration. However, in working with the protocol we became increasingly impressed with the modularity and flexibility of its design. Given the permissionless and open-source nature of the contracts, we decided to remix and extend them beyond their original use case, to bring creators a simple tool to explore new use cases and launch edition drops beyond music NFTs; whether it be memberships, content NFTs, or visual art editions. When creating a collection on Bonfire, creators can choose between image and audio (with video support coming soon), add presales and allowlists, and easily access collector and collection data all from the Bonfire dashboard.

We’re in the midst of a paradigm shift, from one where creators build on borrowed land at the whims of the platforms they rely on, to one where they can build and own complete ecosystems where they and their community benefit from the value they collectively create.

Over the past year, we’ve been building with and listening to creators, and hearing their frustration around the lack of easy-to-use tools to onboard one’s community into web3, and build rich experiences for collectors.

• We teamed up with Daniel Allan on his Glass House drop, selling out 1,000 music NFTs in 24 hours

• We partnered with artist Reo Cragun and Sound.xyz on Reo’s latest EP Frameworks, which doubled as the debut of the Sound Protocol

• Podcaster Adam Levy drove >9.5k free NFT mints for “The Vault”, a gated library of content from 9 influential creators in web3, hosted on his Bonfire site

• Recently we’ve teamed up with the Bankless crew to help power their Bankless Collectibles series, shifting the content NFT meta to podcasting (watch this space 👀)

Growth, relationships, collaboration, and a sense of belonging, are a few of the things we believe power healthy communities, and web3 together with the creator economy movement further provide the tools and infrastructure necessary to take them to the next level. Some might call it the evolution of creator communities, or fan clubs 2.0. So what does this mean for us, and how are we building towards powering these new-age communities? Let’s dig in!

Season 3 Highlights

• Bonfire Studio: Bonfire Studio has evolved over the past quarter into a full-blown platform builder for web3 creators and brands, and you’ve been blowing us away with the experiences you’ve created for your communities. Here are just some of the studio highlights from Season 3:

  • New Blocks: We introduced creators to powerful new drag-n-drop blocks including video, livestream, download, and gallery blocks.

  • Page Templates: We’ve built out a library of page templates, making it quick & easy to spin up custom mint pages, token-gated audio or video libraries, collector showcases, & more.

  • Mint Block: The recent addition of the Mint block lets creators import their NFT contract from any of the protocols we support (currently Sound & Mintplex), and design custom minting experiences on their own site (if you’ve been following music NFTs lately, you’ve probably seen this in action).

• Native Content: We now natively support Audio, Video, and Livestream content, all supporting easy token-gating via the Studio.

• Open Beta: In September we shipped self-serve onboarding, transitioning to ‘Open Beta’. We’re currently working through our waitlist sending out invites in batches, and will be quickly turning our attention toward public launch once that’s complete and we have confidence in the scalability & performance of the platform.

• Bespoke Drops: In the past months we’ve also partnered with innovative artists to help bring their projects to life through bespoke drops on their own artist site:

  • Glass House: First, Daniel Allan debuted minting on Bonfire with his Glass House drop, which sold out 1,000 music NFTs and raised ~70 ETH, while garnering attention throughout the web3 and more mainstream music scenes. The project and release have been featured in countless publications & features, including a full feature in full feature in Billboard.

• Frameworks: Soon after, we teamed up with the Sound team and artist Reo Cragun to support the release of Frameworks, his latest 5-track EP, which doubled as the debut of the Sound Protocol. The drop sold out in <5 mins raising ~11 ETH, and has since gone on to do another 13 ETH in secondaries, and trended for nearly a week on the OpenSea homepage.

While Q3 was our biggest quarter yet, we’re even more excited about what’s coming in Season 4….

Setting Camp

While the past few months have been about building a strong foundation for the platform, through investments in things like supporting native content and self-serve onboarding, these next few months are about transitioning Bonfire from single-player to multiplayer mode.

Here are just some of the projects we’re excited to invest in over the coming months:

• More Customization: We’ll be building more ways to bring your entire brand to Bonfire, through things like custom themes & fonts. Freedom to build your platform your way.

• Teams & Projects: Invite others to co-manage your Bonfire, and create and manage multiple projects, either independently or as collabs with other creators.

• Posts: A lighter-weight and more social format for sharing content, and posts (with native token gating, of course) will make it easier than ever to engage with your collector community around content.

• Native NFT Drops: Create and drop your own NFT collections right from the Bonfire dashboard, powered by our partner protocols.

• ERC-20 Airdrops: Need we say more? Airdrop tokens to your community to incentivize and reward community engagement.

• Creator Analytics: Understand the health and what’s working in your community. Get to know your collectors and fans better with new and improved analytics right from your dashboard.

It's hard to overstate how profound a shift this is.

And while the results thus far have been jaw-dropping, you don’t have to squint too hard to see that much of what’s driving these outcomes is unfettered speculation more than any form of real utility. And while a powerful tool when used appropriately, speculation alone is insufficient to create long-lasting communities. Today we're seeing communities built primarily on hype and FOMO, with vague assurances of future utility. This implicitly values speculators over engaged community members, uniting people around something transient and undependable (“number go up”) rather than the intrinsic motivators that have always been at the core of successful communities.

In the long-run, value will be driven by strong and lasting communities, not the other way around.

For creators, engagement has always been predicated on utility, entertainment, and community. Fans invested their time, minds and hearts for free. Augmenting that with ownership and shared incentives is the revolutionary promise of web3. Replacing it with speculation is not.

A problem we’ve seen with current approaches is that communities can become disjointed when pure speculators share little overlap with fans that existed before. The end result is that instead of creating one community with aligned incentives, there’s a risk of creating fragmented pockets with misaligned incentives.

So why is this happening? Ultimately we see 2 main problems today:

• 1) Most tokens can only be acquired via purchase. This inherently favors speculators over true fans, and excludes those who have time, attention, or passion to give but not capital.

• 2) It’s hard to create real utility with today’s tools. In its absence, there isn’t much to do with a token but to speculate. There are now hundreds of platforms to mint new tokens, and still few tools to unlock utility around all these new assets.

To create healthy and lasting communities, we need more ways to earn membership and ownership in communities, and a greater focus on real utility.

We’re also focused on better tools for token distribution. We’ve got much more planned here, but the first two tools we’re excited to be launching are:

• Airdrops: Create custom airdrops, from smart contract to branded claim page

• Bounties: Incentivize & reward members for specific contributions of time, skills and attention

Token Utility

Finally, we make it easy to layer additional utility and functional benefits on top of your existing assets. In his iconic post on New Internet Logic, John Palmer opens with the line that “The Internet is now a place where everyone has an inventory”. We’re building Bonfire on this new mental model of the internet. For us this means treating token-gating as a core substrate of the platform, a capability that can be applied across the features and experiences we build. Whether you want to gate access to events & community experiences, merch, content, or just about anything else on our roadmap, we aim to provide the tools and templates to make it easy to give your assets utility.
