The scheme of J-10 engine has been changed many times

In fact, the J-10 fighter has experienced several twists and turns in the selection and matching of power system. In 1984, the J-10 fighter development project codenamed “project 10” was officially launched, and the canard static instability layout was preliminarily determined as the final design scheme. However, what follows is to choose a jet engine with advanced performance for the J-10 fighter. At that time, the existing and developing fighter jet engines in China, from the turbojet 7 and turbojet 13 of the imitation Soviet engine to the imitation turbofan 9 and the independently developed turbofan 6, could not meet the use requirements of the J-10 fighter, especially the thrust index was far from enough.

At that time, both the United States and the Soviet Union began to develop a new generation of high thrust turbofan engine at the same time as the development of the third generation fighter. However, with the strength of China’s aviation industry, it is still impossible to develop a supporting new high thrust turbofan engine under the condition of ensuring the R & D Progress of J-10 fighter. Just at this time, China obtained the Soviet MiG-23 fighter from Egypt, and thus obtained the first jet engine with afterburner thrust of more than 10 tons - r29-300 turbojet engine. This was also the most advanced foreign jet engine that China could contact at that time. Its 12.5-ton afterburner thrust could basically meet the performance requirements of J-10 fighter.

Therefore, while determining the design scheme of the J-10 fighter, China’s aviation industry department decided to adopt a two-step strategy in the power system - first, imitate the Soviet made r29-300 turbojet engine, which is code named turbojet 15 in China, and strive to complete the design finalization as soon as possible to ensure that the J-10 fighter has at least a usable power system. The second step is to develop a new high thrust turbofan engine code named turbofan 10 at the same time. During the transition period when the turbojet 15 turbojet engine is equipped with the J-10 fighter prototype for test flight, the development of the turbofan-10 “Taihang” high thrust turbofan engine is completed as soon as possible, and finally the design goal of “double aircraft combination” of J-10 and turbofan 10 is realized.

However, to the surprise of Chinese aviation industry technicians, the R & D of turbojet 15 engine is still very difficult, even if the real object of Soviet made r29-300 turbojet engine is obtained for mapping and imitation. For us, the technical span from turbojet 7 / 13 to turbojet 15 is too large. Therefore, from 1984 to 1991, the engine R & D unit of China aviation industry only completed the full-scale metal prototype of turbojet 15 engine. This year, the full-scale metal prototype of turbojet 15 engine was also installed on the full-scale metal prototype of J-10 fighter, realizing the goal of two aircraft in one in form. It is worth noting that at this time, the full-scale metal prototype of J-10 fighter still adopts an elliptical pitot tube inlet similar to F-16. Moreover, at that time, the rear fuselage and engine compartment of J-10 fighter were designed according to the size of turbojet 15.

If we continue to develop turbojet 15 engine to support J-10 fighter according to the plan at that time, even if the development progress can be guaranteed, the reliability of this type of engine is likely to bring many adverse effects to fighter flight test. At that time, the replacement of J-8 Ⅲ fighter with turbojet 14 engine was one of the most typical lessons. Moreover, according to the development trend of the third generation fighter abroad at that time, the turbojet engine with high fuel consumption rate has been completely eliminated. Unexpectedly, everything turned around in 1991. This year, China decided to introduce the world’s most advanced Su-27 twin engine heavy fighter from the Soviet Union. Therefore, after learning about the performance of AL-31F high thrust turbofan engine equipped with Su-27 fighter, relevant units found that this type of engine is very in line with the use requirements of J-10 fighter, and its technical level is far from that of turbojet 15 engine imitating r29-300.

Therefore, after consultation and soliciting the opinions of military leaders, the relevant departments of the aviation industry finally decided to stop the imitation of turbojet 15 engine in 1993 and selected the Russian made AL-31F high thrust turbofan engine as the power system of J-10 fighter. Due to its excellent performance and reliable leather, this type of engine will not only be used as the power system of J-10 fighter in the flight test stage, but also continue to be used as the supporting power system of mass production models in the future. Of course, Russia will also improve and refit the AL-31F high thrust turbofan engine according to the installation requirements of J-10 fighter, mainly to move the accessory gearbox and other components under the engine in order to adapt to the single engine and single vertical tail design. This is the AL-31FN that China purchased in large quantities all year round. Later, Russia even developed the vector thrust version of this type of engine.

That is, in 1993, the designers of institute 601 improved the J-10 fighter according to the size of AL-31FN engine, and entered the stage of detailed design and prototype production. In 1994, Russia delivered the first batch of economic products to China
