This past year, BubbleDAO has been nothing short of amazing.

Since we’ve started BubbleDAO, we have had a goal and mission to support an inclusive and diverse community by building meaningful relationships, including making the Web3 scene more welcoming for women and underrepresented communities. We have brought together different "bubbles" within Web3 ranging from artists, developers, entrepreneurs, investors, women, minorities, and the LGBTQ+ community. Our duty to bring together people from all backgrounds has been to create an environment for everyone to feel comfortable forming strong relationships, curate events for people from different backgrounds to meet, and provide educational resources for those who want to further their knowledge in Web3. We are proud to say that within just this first year, we definitely have accomplished what we set forth to do, and we will continue doing so in the years to come.

Bringing people together in the Web3 space is easy, but really engaging with the community and growing it to have an average of over 40% women in attendance at our events is something not many social DAOs can say they do. In just the 8 months that we’ve been around, we hosted 12 in-person events, and we take pride in having more women come to our events as it sheds light on how many women are in this space and how crypto can break the male-dominant stereotype.

On top of the IRL events we host multiple times a month, we also kicked off bi-weekly BubbleDAO contributors calls, Twitterspaces, and Instagram Lives. These are just different forms of communicating with our community and engaging with them as much as we can while gaining feedback, creating new ideas, and brainstorming collaborations. Through our Twitterspaces and Instagram Lives, we have hosted numerous virtual collaborations with projects and DAOs such as RTFKT, CloneX, Hive Global Media, Crypto Daddies Club, Web3 Familia, ATX DAO, and many more just to name a few.

Now, let’s take a look back at all the IRL events we have hosted this past year.

It all started with our launch party at LUME Studios featuring Keli Lucas and Not Your Muse in April 2022. This 3D immersive art exhibit projected Keli Lucas and Not Your Muse’s NFTs across all walls and floors, bridging the digital world with a truly immersive real-life experience. This event really kickstarted things for us as both female artists were given a platform to have their 3D NFT art projected for over 250 attendees to see and really spoke volumes to what our goal is in having more women join the Web3 space and the Web3 community coming together as “one bubble.”

Our second event was our sunset cocktail rooftop party to kick off the summer. What better way to start enjoying the warm weather than with a rooftop party courtesy of Alpha House and music by DJ Mark Wolf. The summer vibes and perfect sunset really set the tone for this event as we knew we had something special. We then had a Happy Hour at the Orchard Room with Web3Wifey packed with smiling faces networking over some drinks.

After this, we had our biggest event to date which was a NFT.NYC rooftop event with GoldenDAO featuring Andrew Yang. We had over 1000+ attendees from many different DAOs, projects, and backgrounds with speeches given by Andrew Yang himself and our Co-Founder, Jessie. Not many people can say they have hosted an event with over that many people, and we accomplished this in just two months since launching. During NFT.NYC, we also led an educational workshop for CryptoQueers, an LGBTQIA community with various creators in Web3. One of our Co-Founders, Lucie, talked about her personal story of feeling disappointed that women were being excluded from the Web3 space, leading to the creation of BubbleDAO with a purpose to create change.

Following the workshop, our next occasion was a wine tasting event with Thirsty Thirsty, a women-founded NFT project, along the Williamsburg Waterfront featuring three incredible female winemakers at a woman-owned venue. We brought together the Web3 community to chill, sip on some wine, and chat about their Web3 passions. Leaders from various Web3 fields such as Web3 gaming, DeFi, and NFTs made appearances, including Devin Finzer, the CEO of Opensea. Friendships formed as folks from all Web3 bubbles collated, and everyone left feeling re-energized and inspired. Of course after a wine tasting event, we had to follow up with another happy hour. This time at Printer’s Alley, there were good vibes going around, networking, and new people being introduced into the Web3 space. We decided to do something different for our next event and have The Merge Afterparty at McCarren Park House, featuring DJ Cowboy, to present the launch of a new real estate DAO- NestDAO. Having both BubbleDAO and NestDAO conjoined for an event was special for everyone there, especially with the free merchandise and, of course, some drinks.

Not only did we host events, we also sponsored The Parallel’s Convergence multidimensional art exhibition benefiting The ASAP Foundation, a charity that addresses substance abuse and safety. Giving back to the community is a big part of who we are and what we do because BubbleDAO ourselves is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit affiliate and we know a little goes a long way.

A few weeks later, we celebrated the 1 year anniversary of The NFT Wall in Williamsburg featuring Masnah, who revolutionized graffiti by putting it on the blockchain. The NFT wall itself is an iconic piece of artwork in the Williamsburg community that many people walk past everyday as NFT collectors get the opportunity to memorialize their PFPs in a physical community. We held a raffle in which a BubbleDAO contributor, Kevin, won and was able to get his own spot on the wall for his Crypto Corgis to be painted by Masnah. We then held a Social Web3 Trivia Night and Happy Hour with Women in Web3 at Sour Mouse. This event brought many people together in teams while combining their knowledge on Web3 trivia questions. Finally, our last and final event of the year was the Introspection art show by Jenny Yu and an after party at Alpha House. Her art pieces were displayed all over the house as hundreds of people came to this event, including the Co-Founder of Origin Protocol, Josh Fraser. This was a great way to end the year and in a way came full circle as we mesmerized folks by the art of another talented female artist.

Our first year is something that definitely surpassed our initial expectations and goals. We had no idea how much we would grow and how great of a community we would establish in such a short period of time. The people we met on this journey from hosting events, supporting artists, and supporting small businesses have inspired us as well as hundreds of women and minorities, making people feel comfortable to join the Web3 space and to want to learn more. BubbleDAO isn’t your average social DAO. We put our best foot forward to grow, educate, and believe in our community. As the 2022 year comes to an end, we want to give a big special Thank You to every single person who has supported us and made BubbleDAO what it is today. Cheers to new adventures and memories, and cheers to being one very special bubble!

By Oliver Yao, BubbleDAO Contributor

It’s all the rage. If you look at Google search trends, the term “web3” spiked in search frequency in 2021. Why? Well, people have been hearing about it all over the news. And the million-dollar question is, “Is it just hype or is there any real substance to it?” Well, there are many strong opinions in this multi-sided debate. But before we get into these opinions, it’s helpful to know what web3 is.

Web3 is a term used to describe the suite of things possible from the recent development of blockchain technology. Blockchains are networks of computers that manage a ledger, or collection of data, and stay up to date with each other continuously. A key attribute of the network is decentralization, meaning that one rogue computer can’t do something that disagrees with the ledger, such as buy something if that person doesn’t have money. The ledger can hold anything from transaction details in terms of cryptocurrency to a virtual machine that allows people to vote on group decisions. The goal of web3 is to help the user/creator by giving them full control over their underlying data, any content they create, as well as digital assets they have purchased. Furthermore, the goal is to create a trustless system where users don’t have to trust the leaders of a company, but rather they just have to trust the lines of code that are open sourced so everyone can see. In an ideal world, there are many advantages to web3, including:

Decentralized innovation since users can work together to build on top of each other’s open-source code, which means anyone can read and potentially contribute to the code.

More incentives to reward users and creators since the middle-man centralized platform (e.g. YouTube) is removed and new incentive structures can be used.

More user trust, since instead of having to trust humans, there are “smart contracts”, or code that executes once a predetermined condition is met.

Keep in mind I said, “ideal world.” In practice, the web3 ecosystem is still infantile and constantly changing. There’s the pessimistic side, arguing that web3 is a made-up term used by those who seek to shift current power structures to a new one that benefits those who got there first, financialize everything to make supply scarce and thus profitable, and scam people into fraudulent technology that doesn’t have the base functionality that it claims to have. The other camp is arguing how web3 is a democratization of the internet, where we all have access to our own data, creators and fans who can be rewarded fairly for their contribution to community, and there will be new ways of organizing in a decentralized, autonomous organization that automates human error away and gets all members engaged in governance. Anyway, what I just said may not make any sense to you at all now, but I’ll try to break things down in as simple terms as possible in this essay.

In a gigantic two-hour video essay, video creator Dan lays out his argument against the validity of several web3 creations including cryptocurrency, DAOs, and NFTs. He does so with meticulous detail as he gives examples after examples of failed creations, scams, and malicious actors. He points out a unique take: the economic disparity underlying the growth of these digital assets. At the top, you have “the wealthy and tenuously wealthy looking for a space that they can dominate, where they can be trendsetters and tastemakers and can seemingly invent value through sheer force of will,” while at the bottom there are “people who feel their opportunities shrinking, who see the system closing around them, who have become isolated by social media and a global pandemic, who feel the future getting smaller, people pressured by the casualization of work as jobs are dissolved into the gig economy, and want to believe that escape is just that easy.” He takes it even further by saying that those who thought 2008 didn’t give enough opportunities for regular folks to participate in the housing market speculation are the ones driving this web3 movement. He is comparing the growth and frenzy of web3 digital assets to the growth and frenzy of housing related securities in the 2008 financial crisis. His overall theme is that, “A different system does not inherently mean a better system.” Olson seems to see the downstream effects of web3, specifically the actions of people engulfed in the system, and he doesn’t see much good. However, upstream in the communities, there is cautious optimism regarding the future of web3.

Tim Roughgarden, a professor at Columbia University, in a fireside chat with Protocol Labs says, “I like to talk about this virtual computer that sort of lives in the sky and runs as a public good… It’s a good sign when the more you understand, the more excited you get.” When asked about the risks that the space introduces, one that lacks the traditional academic rigor and scrutiny, he says, “It sort of depends on the risk profile on the project… I feel like my job is to say here are the risks if you do this… it’s often going to be a business call” (Roughgarden 17:40). I think this is just an example of him skirting responsibility for the consequences of rapid development and unregulated markets. He is solely focused on advancing the technology behind these web3 “businesses” and any forms of scams, whether intentional or not, is not his problem. I think this is an example of the danger of separating academia from the real world, where academia is seen as pure and truth-seeking, and the outside world is seen as responsible for the difficult decisions that involve trade-offs and peoples’ wellbeing are at risk. In an article about the current issues with digital property, the authors give examples of art fraud with NFTs facilitated by online “Mafias,” hoarding digital assets amongst top elites that goes against the idealized notion of democratized ownership and money laundering and counterfeits in the NFT space. Ultimately, they conclude that “It is not impossible that the metaverse will form the backbone of the next iteration of the internet, web3. But it is fair to say that its PR greatly precedes it” (203). They argue that the technology has yet to be fully understood, and it will take years for the judicial system to catch up to the new issues introduced by the technology.

All in all, it is safe to say that the evolution of web3 and how it will affect the world entirely is too soon to make a conclusion on. However, the beginning efforts of it have proven itself adaptable to those able and willing to explore it. At some point, we will be steering away from our present technology, and moving into a new and advanced world of technology, though only time will tell exactly how long that will take and what type of new evolution will be successful.

Dan Olson. "Line Goes Up – The Problem with NFTs." YouTube, uploaded by Folding Ideas, transcribed by Eize Basa, 21 January 2022, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQ_xWvX1n9g.

Shin, Laura.

By Oliver Yao, BubbleDAO Contributor

What is inclusion? There are so many ways of defining it. But to me, I heard it defined this way, in relation to diversity, and it just stuck: Diversity is inviting people to the party while inclusion is inviting people to dance. In other words, diversity alone is insufficient to building high-functioning teams. Diversity is just potential greatness; inclusion is the other ingredient that’s required to create a high-impact team. Together, diversity and inclusion allow an organization to bring out more voices, more perspectives, resulting in increased adaptability, creativity, and innovation. The problems we’re solving are diverse, and the teams solving them must be diverse as well.

However, web3 companies are struggling to attract and retain diverse talent. Furthermore, web3 communities are struggling to attract and retain diverse contributors. After all, what’s so special about many web3 communities is the ability of users to contribute, and if we don’t have diverse contributors, we can’t create inclusive communities that can scale.

Excitingly, DAOs and NFTs are great avenues to bring in women and BIPOC. To illustrate, when SyndicateDAO launched web3 investment clubs, they said that half of their launch cohort were either all women or women-led DAOs. How did this happen? Co-founder Ian Lee said that they hadn’t intended it and it just naturally happened out of an alignment of mission and values. To explain deeper, I would argue that traditionally web3 projects solely required web3 specific skills. With DAOs and NFTs, with a community-centric focus, the web2 skills of community building and marketing open doors for many traditionally underrepresented minorities to step into web3.

So how can we do more? In my opinion, talking about inclusion in web3 isn’t enough. Rather, we need visibility. This means giving underrepresented minorities more spotlight opportunities such as showcasing their work or teaching about web3. Another important part of visibility is being very explicit about having inclusion as a core value of your organization. All members, current and prospective, must be aware that by applying to be a member of the organization, you must embody inclusion.

Furthermore, we need direct engagement opportunities. An example of this is She256, an organization that matches women that want to get involved in the space to mentors. And of course, BubbleDAO! Outside of hosting community events, we are building career development channels to help place people from all backgrounds into web3 companies.

Bubble’s Mission

BubbleDAO’s mission is to foster a diverse and inclusive space in Web3 while making the Web3 scene more welcoming for women and underrepresented communities.

As the Web3 ecosystem developed, we noticed that different cliques started forming - developers only mingling amongst themselves, artists left out of conversations with developers, women feeling marginalized, the LGBTQ+ community feeling like there wasn't enough of a community for them, etc. Bubble is all about bringing together these different "bubbles" within Web3. We provide value to our members by curating events for people from different backgrounds to meet, and by providing educational resources for those who want to further their knowledge in Web3.

As we started breaking down these walls and bringing everyone from all walks of life into one room, we collectively became one "bubble." 🤯 More collaboration and innovative ideas started forming as people from differing backgrounds mingled. We started seeing an uptick in women and minority attendance at our events. Other DAOs and Web3 companies with shared missions began reaching out to partner together. The immense benefits of getting together in real life are countless.

We also bring the Bubble community together online through Instagram Live and Twitter Spaces, in addition to our Telegram and Discord channels. Check out our LinkTree for all our socials :)

In this past month, we hosted an Instagram Live with Christina Tubera of FemmeFinance as well as Bee Davis of QryptoQueers and Hive Media. Through these online collaborations, we hope to further the joint mission of inclusivity and bringing in women and underrepresented communities into the space. Additionally, BubbleDAO previously sponsored an NFTNYC event with QryptoQueers in Brooklyn, proudly hosting an educational seminar at the event aimed to teach artists how to enter the NFT space. This was just the beginning, as Bubble is more than excited to educate and inspire many more underrepresented communities in our journey.

We also hosted a summer wine tasting event with Thirsty Thirsty at Dandy Wine and Spirit by the Williamsburg waterfront. We showcased three incredible female winemakers at a woman-owned venue and brought together the Web3 community to chill, sip on some wine, and chat about their Web3 passions- from Web3 gaming, to NFTs, to DeFi protocols, to artists and developers. Friendships formed as folks from all Web3 bubbles collated, and everyone left feeling re-energized and inspired.

Why did we start Bubble?

Hi there, Jessie here! A little story time: back in the day when Lucie and I started attending crypto events, there were little to no women at these events. The best way I could describe these events was… “sweaty dude energy” haha. But, what really started irking me was when we’d be asked, “Who are you a plus-one here with?” “Do you even know what an NFT is?” “Are you a groupie?”

Oh hellllll nah. I’m here for myself. I’m in Web3 too. I know what an NFT is.

So, Lucie and I decided we wanted to start throwing our own Web3 events. Events where everyone felt like they belonged and could mingle freely without judgment. Now, Bubble hosts numerous in-person events in NYC and is expanding to other cities across the country. Check out our DAO contributor form if you are personally interested in helping out Bubble, especially if you live in LA, Miami or Austin :) In addition, we have an active Twitter poll for our first Community Sprint Meeting. August 14th. Williamsburg Brooklyn

Many DAOs start with a shared passion among a small core group of founders. This core group is sometimes referred to as the core team, the DAO governors or managers, or even the founders. It is probably necessary for a smaller unified group to take the initial steps of forming the DAO. Over time as the community grows, however, there is the need for a growing number of core community members and DAO contributors to step up to take over various new roles and responsibilities that emerge within the DAO. This may include roles like marketing, business development, event planning, etc.

As an example, as BubbleDAO grows beyond NYC, we will be looking for contributors to bring Bubble to new cities across the country. The next cities for Bubble to expand to will in large part be decided by the number of interested DAO contributors in their respective cities!

Communication is an important cornerstone for all DAO communities, but often one of the common pain points. For DAOs the most common communication method is currently Discord, but for anyone in the Web3 world, you already know there are mixed feelings about Discord’s appeal. A common complaint is that Discord is a high friction solution not frequently used by those outside of Web3.

Despite this, Discord has served many DAO communities successfully and remains the communication channel of choice for DAOs. Telegram is often used alongside or even in place of Discord for some DAOs

IRL events remain an important way to build cohesive bonds within DAO communities, supplementing virtual communication channels and open forums like AMAs. The need for these IRL events was a major reason behind the creation of Bubble! We strive to bring together inclusive Web3 communities in every city.

Heck, even our own name, BubbleDAO has the oh so famous “D”-word in it. So what is a DAO anyway? DAOs stand for Decentralized Autonomous Organizations, and yes, I know that supposedly self-explanatory name is not the most helpful for those new to Web3, so let’s break the name down.

Decentralized means that the organization does not have a single source of control; as a core tenant of anything in Web3, this means that power, and subsequent decision making abilities, in the organization is spread across multiple entities or people. Typically this means that DAOs will give governance or voting power to members of its community. In BubbleDAO’s instance, we are planning to do exactly that once we launch our future NFTs and tokens, so stay tuned and be on the lookout on how to participate in Bubble’s governance.

The “Autonomous” part of the DAO means that the organization is meant to run itself. Tying things back to the decentralized portion, it connotes that even if a key member of the governance community left the organization, that the DAO would still be able to function on, because it relies on itself as a decentralized institution with automated rules and not solely on any one member of the community or a board of directors. This means that the DAO should be fully transparent in terms of treasury and all other information, so that members of its governance community can make the best decisions for the DAO.

Finally, the “Organization” part of the DAO, while may seem self-explanatory, does have quite a few implications attached to its definition; mainly that the organization is an organized group of people or entities meant to share a common or similar purpose, in other words, a community.

Social DAOs to Create Impact

Now that we’ve figured out what a DAO is, let’s take a look at social DAOs in particular. The “social” part of the social DAO really boils down to a shared purpose in a social group or cause for the community. Unlike say, investment DAOs where the shared common purpose is to pool resources together to invest, social DAOs are really meant to bring together people across various realms and borders, unifying us to a tribe of people with similar interests. In BubbleDAO’s case, we’re all about helping more women and minorities feel comfortable joining the Web3 space through both IRL and online events.

The amazing thing about social DAOs is that they can bring about positive change in the world through activism. Since women’s rights are near and dear to our hearts, we wanted to feature ChoiceDAO as a prime example of the positive action of social DAOs. After the devastating overturn of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court on Jun 24, 2022, which ended the freedom of choice for women seeking abortions, ChoiceDAO was formed in collaboration with founders UkraineDAO, ConstitutionDAO, and other groups, as a way to stand up and fight back for women’s reproductive rights. ChoiceDAO is blending community and capital together to lead to an organic grassroots movement that complements and supercharges existing efforts in reproductive health. Launching on Monday, July 11, ChoiceDAO’s initial goal is to raise $1+ million in 26 days to enable direct action for people who need access to healthcare, with 100% of proceeds going to organizations supporting reproductive rights, as voted on by the community. Check out their website https://www.choicedao.org/ to see ways that you can be involved.

The structure of DAOs really lends itself to facilitating social impact missions and non-profits, since DAOs by nature are more transparent, decentralized and governed by the community, and have greater accountability through the use of automations and smart contracts. Because social DAOs are still a relatively young notion, get excited about all the possibilities and innovations that are to come as the Web3 community continues to find new ways to utilize DAOs to create change and social impact.

From Day One, our team felt the right direction for Bubble was to create a new way for others to connect romantically. We want to change how singles meet.

At this point, probably millions of lifelong partnerships first started with a swipe. Still, taking our personal experiences into account, our team agreed there’s a need for an alternative to the current dating app landscape. How much time can you spend on Tinder, Hinge, Bumble and all those other apps, only to end up in the same place that you started? The cycle of delete, redownload, repeat. If you’ve been on those apps, you know what it’s like.

We are on a mission to do better, to try something new. Bubble is here to bring singles together face to face, not screen to screen.

In the coming weeks, you’ll see two styles of events: Bubble Community and Bubble Date. Bubble Community events allow members to connect with one another in our larger community in a chill, low-stakes environment. Meet new people, connect, and have fun! Bubble Date is our series of curated events available to a smaller number of members. We at Bubble are a group of singles from all walks of life, bringing virtual connections to reality across the world. Bubble’s mission has always been to facilitate the development of meaningful bonds in the Web3 community. Much of what our community has achieved so far would not be possible without the extraordinary talent and support of the women on our team and in crypto. Many of the blockchain innovations gaining ground today have been created and spearheaded by the amazing women pioneers, for which we are grateful.

We were honored to sponsor H.E.R.DAOs NFT Drop on March 30th to fund travel scholarships for women in Web3 to compete in Hackathons. As an organization we are excited to sponsor more important initiatives like these in the near future.

About Bubble

Bubble DAO is launching this year in New York City and then expanding globally. We recognize that many Web2 users experience difficulties dating online. Swiping through 100s of profiles filtered by an algorithm through a centralized server is so not cool, and neither are catfish or fake profiles. We believe strong relationships come from strong communities with shared interests. Our members are real users that share common interest in Web3. It is our duty to help facilitate meaningful community-based in person and virtual events to individuals with an interest in crypto. So instead of wasting your time swiping in Web2, join Bubble DAO by signing up for our waitlist and come to one of our events to network or find love in a safe environment with like-minded individuals. There’s nothing like getting in on a project early, so sign up while you can because this opportunity will not be around long!
