Reference News reported on March 6 that the website of the Atlantic published an article entitled “seven habits of old age happiness” on February 17. The author is Arthur Brooks, a professor of sociology at the Kennedy School of government of Harvard University. The full text is excerpted as follows:

Imagine you in ten years. Will your happiness be more or less than today? I ask my graduate students (average age in their 20s) this question every year, and most people think they will be happier. But when I asked them about their forecast in 50 years, it seemed far from optimistic. For most of them, their 70s don’t sound good.

Happiness divides in old age

When I showed them the data about the actual situation of most people, they were shocked: happiness tended to decline throughout youth and middle age, reaching the bottom around the age of 50. After that, happiness began to rise again until the age of 65. Then something strange happened. As they grow older, the elderly are divided into two groups: one group feels happier and happier, and the other group feels unhappier and unhappier.

At this time of life, many people realize the importance of making informed financial decisions in early decades. Those who plan ahead and have savings are more likely to make their lives comfortable. The change in happiness is similar. I explained it in my new book from strength to strength: finding success, happiness and deep goals for the rest of my life.

Each of us has something like the “happiness 401 (k) plan”, so that we can invest when we are young and enjoy when we are old. Just as financial planners advise clients to take specific actions (such as letting you save automatically), we can teach ourselves to do specific things to make our later years happier.

In 1938, researchers at Harvard Medical School came up with a visionary idea: they conducted a long-term follow-up study of a group of men studying at Harvard University. Every other year or two, researchers asked subjects questions about their lifestyles, habits, relationships, work and well-being. The study was later expanded to include more than just men attending Harvard. For more than 80 years, researchers have regularly updated their research results.

These findings are a treasure trove: you can see how people live, love and work in their twenties and thirties, and then you can see what their lives will look like in the next few decades. From this method of predicting happiness, you can learn how to invest in your future happiness.

As the study subjects aged, the researchers classified them in terms of happiness and health. There are many changes in this group, but they can be divided into two distinct groups, forming two extremes. The “happy and healthy” group was the best, with good physical and mental health and high life satisfaction; The other extreme is the “sad illness” group, whose physical and mental health status and life satisfaction are lower than the average.

The elderly in the “happy health” group tend to accumulate some resources and habits in their happiness 401 (k) plan when they are young. Some of them are difficult for each of us to control: happy childhood, long family elders, and no clinical depression. However, some factors are controlled by us to varying degrees, which can enable us to make plans for happiness and health in our later years.

How to make your old age happier

Using data from the Harvard study, researchers showed in 2001 that we can control seven major investment decisions quite directly: smoking, drinking, weight, exercise, emotional adaptability, education and interpersonal relationships. Here’s what you can do now in order to have as many resources as possible in your happiness account in your old age:

Don’t smoke - if you smoke, quit now. The first attempt to quit smoking may not succeed, but the earlier you start quitting smoking, the more smoke-free years you put into your happiness account.

Moderate drinking. In this Harvard study, alcoholism is closely related to smoking, while other studies have shown that even if you look at alcoholism alone, it is a strong predictor of depression. If you show signs of alcohol abuse, seek help now. Although it may be difficult to give up drinking, you will never regret making this decision.

Maintain a healthy weight. Eat more fruits and vegetables and eat in moderation, but avoid yo yo diets or strict dietary restrictions that you can’t maintain for a long time.

Give priority to exercise in life, arrange time to exercise every day and persevere. Walking every day can be said to be the best way to exercise.

Train your coping mechanisms now. The sooner you find healthy ways to deal with the inevitable troubles of life, the better prepared you will be in your 80s. This means that you should actively try - or perhaps with the help of mental training or even therapy - to avoid over thinking, unhealthy emotional reactions or avoidance behavior.

Keep learning. More education will make the elderly have a more positive attitude, which means prolonging life and living a happier life. This doesn’t mean you need to go to Harvard. You just need lifelong and purposeful learning, such as reading serious non fiction works and learning about new topics regularly.

Focus on cultivating stable and long-term relationships now. For most people, this includes a stable marriage, as well as relationships with family, friends and partners. The key is to find someone you can grow with and rely on no matter what happens.

The best way to maximize your happiness in your 70s is to pursue these seven goals with enthusiasm. But if you can only choose one goal to invest your energy in, choose the last one. According to the research of Harvard University, the most important feature of happy and healthy life in the elderly is healthy interpersonal relationship. As Robert Waldinger, who is currently in charge of the study, told me: “happiness can be built - the best element is good and warm interpersonal relationships.”

However, these seven reserves of happiness are based on the average level of the group, which means that individuals can’t copy mechanically. For example, maybe you just can’t quit smoking, and you’re not doomed to misfortune in your 70s. If you can support your happiness through other investments - such as finding meaning and community in your beliefs - you will be happy
