Everything.

We are at a pivotal moment where technology simultaneously accelerates and suppresses the flow of information. Cryptography is merely the latest advancement in this ongoing revolution, following the internet, cellular communication, the printing press, and even double-entry accounting. Each of these innovations shifted the balance of power, removing control from centralized authorities and distributing it to the masses.

Before these breakthroughs, information was tightly controlled by elites. Most of the population couldn’t read or write, and those in power curated what could be known. The printing press changed that, enabling mass production and dissemination of information across society. Double-entry accounting revolutionized how individuals tracked economic transactions, fostering a new economy. Cellular communication allowed us to exchange ideas on the go, while the internet gave everyone with access the potential for unlimited learning. Cryptography, however, elevated this revolution by allowing information to be transacted without intermediaries, putting power directly into the hands of the individual.

Each of these technologies empowered humanity in profound ways.

Yet, as we enter this next phase of technological acceleration, we also confront a tool with the capacity to destroy humanity. A tool that can just as easily control and suppress as it can liberate. This technology processes vast amounts of information at speeds previously unimaginable. It performs the work of thousands at a fraction of the cost. It has the potential to reshape society as we know it—and in many ways, it already has.

Soon, this technology may determine what information is deemed "important," curating and controlling what we see, know, and believe.

This is where the power of permissionless, decentralized cryptography shines. In a decentralized system, no single entity rules over the information. There’s no gatekeeper, no intermediary deciding what is or isn’t allowed to flow through the system.

On-chain art on Ethereum, for me, represents this principle. It’s a permissionless, decentralized, immutable FUCK YOU to the centralized powers that seek to suppress information. It’s the purest and most verifiable form of free expression humanity has ever had. Users decide what they engage with, what they transact, and what they choose to believe.

Enter "FOOD."
This is my protest piece—a resistance to the centralized powers that work to hide the atrocities humans inflict on animals. Most of us are aware of the horrors that we subject other species to. We rationalize, ignore, and turn a blind eye. By doing so, we've trained emerging technologies to do the same. We've conditioned them to treat these atrocities as unspoken, unspeakable.

"FOOD" cannot be ignored. It’s information that will endure as long as freedom of information endures. It stands as a testament to what decentralized, permissionless, immutable technology can achieve—a symbol of a reality that cannot be suppressed, even when we try to silence it from our own consciousness.

By harnessing the power of decentralization, these technologies enable permissionless, censorship-resistant, immutable, and decentralized expression. However, as we navigate this landscape, it is crucial to recognize that not all NFTs or blockchains embody these qualities.

d/fuckyea on Namecoin

Since 'fuck yea, defiance', the first known tradeable non-fungible file/image asset was minted fully on-chain on Namecoin in 2012, early crypto natives began figuring out workarounds to store their images entirely 'on-chain'. No, this isn't the co-opted 'onchain' that we continuously see touted by large centralized for-profit entities and trendy VC's. Instead, the original meaning of 'on-chain' was literal in the sense that the artwork was stored entirely "on the chain" with no external storage dependencies. This means the code needed to render the artwork lives FULLY on its parent blockchain ledger and not on any external servers like Arweave, IPFS, and yes in some cases Amazon AWS 🤮. In all cases, the artwork is only as decentralized, immutable, and censorship resistant as the hosting service and blockchain that it's stored on. Over the past year, we have started to lose the original meaning, but I digress...(I'm looking at u BASE)

Storing artwork fully on-chain comes with some significant hurdles. Its technical, its expensive, and file size is limited. But with great power comes great cost. This places some real constraints on the artist. Not only do they need to figure out how to hack a financial blockchain into a storage layer (RIP core devs) they also need to be very cognizant of how large their artwork file size is. This has spawned a new class of artist-hackers or 'compressionists' as some identify.

Compressionists do what you think a compressionist would do...COMPRESS....

These 'compressionists' have found creative ways to reduce their image file sizes dramatically while retaining the overall aesthetics by utilizing old-school compression methods via 'dithering' and other storage saving methods. It's massively effective while also pulling on nostalgic chords echoing back to early internet and fond retro pixel art...fuck yea.

From the Fractured Memories Collection by @0xdiid

While these anarcho-hacker-compressionist-artists have found creative ways to create and store the most decentralized, permissionless, immutable, and censorship resistant images to exist in our modern world, they have really only focused on aesthetically pleasing artworks and barely scratched the surface of potentially controversial artwork that would call for such an 'protected' immutable and permanent state.

Through my web3 travels, I came in contact with @archivist - a self-labeled archiver and collector of historic digital assets. He showed me a collection that he had quietly released in 2023 entitled Timeless Diffusions. His artwork, the first NSFW photography minted and stored fully on-chain gave me a lightbulb moment. Nude "art" is a common form of legal expression that often faces significant controversy, censorship, and suppression. Popular online social platforms either downright ban the content or heavily suppress its distribution. By utilizing fully on-chain storage and the properties that come with it, I would be able to cryptographically protest these suppressive practices. As long as these images persist on the blockchain, they are a testament to true freedom of speech and expression in our digital world.

"CENSORED" playfully explores this idea by storing two nude photographs fully on-chain, one male and one female, right into the unchangeable core of the Ethereum blockchain. This artwork attempts to comment on censorship and highlight merely one example of the indelible nature of this amazing medium.

I invite others to explore this idea with me. What should we store and distribute on this amazing 'always on global computer'? My mind wanders towards a future where this revolutionary storage medium can be used as a stronghold for free speech, a forum for opposition, a living record of history, a channel for whistleblowing, an unwavering chronicler of war crimes and human rights abuses, an educational resource - preserving and disseminating knowledge across generations, a means of cultural preservation - documenting and safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, an environmental watchdog - recording and tracking data and abuses to hold violators accountable, a pillar for human and animal rights advocacy - creating an unalterable record of abuses and testimonies.....an 'open source' of culture and history.

"CENSORED" is currently not for sale.

With that said, I have minted three "UNCENSORED" editions that are available for collecting at 0.01 ETH with 100 editions each here: UNCENSORED - Collection | OpenSea

"UNCENSORED"

P.S. look into the SVG code of "CENSORED" 😉

-BUSHI <3

I would also like to give a shoutout to an artist who I greatly admire and is also a large inspiration to this project, @chainleftist. Traditionally, I think of weapons as things like—katanas, AR-15s, atomic bombs, words—not our precious digital collectibles.

However, not all NFTs are made equal. While many are simply jpegs, pngs, and gifs—generally benign in nature, aside from some of their "visual content" (kek)—there exists a category of NFTs, notably SVGs and HTML files, that are inherently more programmable and "dynamic." These NFTs can be malignant.

At its most basic core, Ethereum is a decentralized and permissionless database. It's a radical departure from traditional web2 database structure, offering anyone the ability to add data without centralized approval or oversight. This always on and always open nature is revolutionary, but it also introduces complexities, especially concerning security.

Web2 security practices typically restrict the type of user input into a database to protect data integrity and end user safety. However, Ethereum's decentralized ethos flips this on its head, creating a playground for trustless innovation and experimentation inside of this global database.

"okay cool its a permissionless database, so what" im getting there...

Websites, at their core, are built on HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. JavaScript's Turing completeness means it can execute almost any computable function. If you can dream it, code it, and run it, JavaScript will do it. Go ahead, imagine all the great things you can do if anything was possible. Now, imagine all of the equally bad things you could do as well. Thats JavaScript!

The specific danger with JavaScript lies in XSS (Cross-Site Scripting) attacks. XSS exploits involve injecting malicious JavaScript into otherwise benign and trusted websites, manipulating them to execute unintended actions upon unsuspecting websites and users.

<script>alert('XSS');</script> //Sample XSS injection

There are different types of XSS attacks, each with unique characteristics and implications, but in this case, we are mostly interested in a "stored XSS" attack. A stored XSS attack literally means that the attacker was able to inject and "store" the malicious JavaScript into the database of the website. If an unsuspecting user happens to come upon this stored malicious script, i.e. XSS payload stored in a forum post, the attack begins. The result of the attack is ultimately up to the intent and expertise of the attacker, but attacks can include things like: Phishing, Wallet Drainer, DOS, Cookie Bomb, Cookie Theft, Drive-by Downloads, Keylogging, Hidden Crypto Miner, etc.

All not good things.

But how does it relate to my precious NFTs? Because instead of each website using its own siloed database like in Web2, each Web3 dApp shares a GLOBAL database that anyone can view and write-to.

This decentralized database doesn't inherently filter user-contributed data for security threats like XSS. This openness can lead to scenarios where if a decentralized application (dApp) doesn't properly sanitize the fetched data before serving it to the client, such as SVGs or metadata within NFTs, it could unwittingly execute malicious scripts through a stored XSS attack exposing you to hidden threats lurking within the Metaverse.

"WEAPONIZED NFT"

Enter "jaVasCriptguy," a conceptual embodiment of a fully onchain stored XSS threat within the NFT ecosystem. Stored permissionlessly on the Ethereum database with no external storage dependencies, "jaVasCriptguy" is potentially the most immutable and widespread XSS "attack" that currently exists. Any dApp that fetches and populates NFT data directly from the Ethereum database is a potential target for "jaVasCriptguy".

But "jaVasCriptguy" looks cute and harmless. Yes, he is cute, but he's also punk rock!

"jaVasCriptguy" embodies various XSS payloads, increasing in complexity to test for edge cases. While his payloads may not cause any actual harm to end users and is purely for conceptual art enjoyment and educational benefits, they are real XSS injections that could showcase entry points into our precious and young ecosystem. As we talked about above, once entry is made, the sky's the limit (up only! or down only. whatever...).

-BUSHI <3

P.S. The core of the problem lies in the attack being aimed at the client side, which is the interface that operates on a user's own computer or device, not the remote servers or blockchain its stored on. Dapps operate by linking users directly with the blockchain, eliminating the need for central servers. This means any content, such as NFT data, gets processed right on the user's device via their browser and device of choice. Think of SNOW CRASH as a package and a Dapp as a delivery vehicle. Once SNOW CRASH is delivered to the user, the payload begins being processed on the user's browser. Since most Dapps assume that NFTs are "safe" packages, they deliver these packages to the end user without much thought.

HOW IT WORKS

At its heart, "SNOW CRASH" leverages a tiny SVG payload designed to overwhelm and disrupt the rendering capabilities of any browser or device that attempts to load it. This is achieved through the strategic use of SVG's
<use>
and
<g>
elements to create a deeply nested, recursive structure that exponentially increases the computational demand required to render the artwork.

The payload begins with an innocuous-looking SVG artwork. However, embedded within is a series of group (
<g>
) elements that recursively reference each other. Each group doubles the references of the previous one, creating a cascade of exponential growth in the number of elements to be processed. This geometric progression ensures that, very quickly, the rendering engine is overloaded, leading to significant performance degradation or a complete snow crash.

Deep inside this recursive digital spiderweb lives an artwork. Hidden from view.

DUALITY

The impact of "SNOW CRASH" is twofold: Visually and Functionally.

Visually, the artwork remains hidden, shielded by the complexity of its container. This inaccessibility is a deliberate design choice, reflecting on the nature of value and visibility in the digital art world. The artwork challenges the notion that digital assets are always accessible, posing the question of value in absence.

We're constantly in a state of anxiety due to a never-ending onslaught of notifications and people expecting instant gratification. Often, our bank accounts are drained by pointless consumption that doesn't bring us any happiness, and those same expenses, more often than not, are the things that might eventually do us in. What's the purpose of our existence on this earth? Is it merely to work until we die? Is it just to have an appealing LinkedIn and a laughable FXCKing headshot in professional attire? Is it just to show up to work every day for a job we FXCKing despise and can't even support ourselves with? I say FXCK THAT!

When I discovered crypto in 2021, I felt at home. People said FXCK those ridiculous FXCKing professional headshots and were flaunting hilarious FXCKing cartoon animal profile pictures instead. It was FXCKing hysterical. Millionaires weren't behaving like conceited 'my shyt doesn't stink' types; they were in the trenches with us, sharing memes, vibes, and dispensing knowledge generously. Age, background – nothing FXCKing mattered. We were all on the same playing field. Simultaneously, a new art renaissance was emerging. Artists and aspiring artists were creating at unprecedented speeds. They were experimenting with fresh styles and techniques not yet respected in the traditional art world. Artists were getting FXCKing rich. Beeple sold his everydays for a staggering 69 million FXCKing dollars... People were spending inconceivable sums on FXCKing JPEGs. It was electric.

So I embraced this new art renaissance, the Crypto Renaissance. My first mint was 'FXCK BANKS' - a stupid FXCKing pink robot flashing its two middle fingers. I dreamt of this audacious pink robot appearing on CNN one day, headlined "FXCK BANKS NFT sells for millions". Not because I'm after the money, though it wouldn't hurt, but because I yearned for all those greedy FXCKing bankers to see a pink robot flipping them off. I wanted to deliver them a resounding 'FXCK YOU'.

Though this narrative hasn't fully unfolded yet, I carved out my own niche in crypto and achieved success with my art. I had the privilege to craft art for the Ethereum Foundation, Bankless, Aragon DAO, among other incredible communities. I co-founded DAOpunks—a DAO that awards grants to outstanding individuals using funds from my art sales. I pushed boundaries, introducing concepts previously unseen in the world. Although I'm immensely grateful others appreciate my art, I often feel out of place, hesitating to label myself an artist when inquired about my profession. "Oh you make NFTs??? Arent those a scam?".

The 2022-2023 bear market was merciless. Overnight, liquidity in the market vanished. Artists who once thrived found no buyers. Crypto millionaires were no longer millionaires. Some lost everything. The WAGMI spirit evaporated. Evidently, not all of us were going to make it.

Despondency seeped into my daily existence as I navigated this FXCKing emotional maelstrom. Self-doubt crept in again. I questioned my capacity to provide for my loved ones and myself. My criticism of 'The System' began to waver. Perhaps I was mistaken. Maybe I should conform, become a LinkedIn bro, or even settle for a shit job I FXCKing detest, just to lead a 'normal' life. Despite my disdain for the societal norms and the idea of selling out, I have responsibilities. Bills need payment. My family relies on me. Participating in society is non-negotiable. This was my mindset for much of 2023.

During this period, I channeled both external and internal pessimism into my art. FXCK was reborn, even more FXCKed than before. Rather than accept defeat, I decided to double the FXCK down, pursuing my passion with even greater zeal. I am a FXCKing artist. I'm worthy. The world MUST hear my message. Even though societal rules bind us all, I realized I could play by my own FXCKing rules. While some may not deem this as art, to them I say FXCK off; they have no grasp on true art.

FXCK emerged from raw emotion and astute observation. It challenges established norms and conveys a universal message "FXCK you".

If you're ready to join me on this FXCKing journey, below is the very essence of FXCK. Remember, you are already FXCKed.

-Bushi <3

FXCK The System

Wake up! We're trapped in a society that promotes mindless consumption and the relentless chase for more. Every time they sell you the "dream," demand the truth. Every time they say "CONFORM," scream back "FXCK YOU!"

FXCK the Status Quo

Don't be confined by the boundary's society has drawn for us. Challenge traditions, question norms, and redefine what's considered 'normal'. Don't just fit in; stand out and shape a new narrative for the future. It's only by breaking the mold that we forge a new path.

FXCK Mediocrity

We're here to change the world. Settle for nothing less than extraordinary. If an idea doesn’t challenge norms or usher in change, it's just another cog in the machine.

FXCK Passive Consumption

Seek out the facts, question the source, and be the beacon of informed decisions. Don't be swayed by sweet lies; demand the bitter truth.

FXCK Blind Loyalty

Remember the betrayals, the cover-ups, and the moments we were let down. Never back a cause or a leader without discerning their true motives.

FXCK The Hype

Be wary of trends that distract more than they benefit. Analyze, reflect, and determine your stance. Are you just a pawn, or are you setting the game?

FXCK Digital Dystopia

Never forget the real world. While the internet might be our playground, our real lives matter. Family, friends, passions—balance is not just a word, it's a way of life.

FXCK Judgement

Speak, share experiences, and listen to diverse stories. Unity is born from understanding and empathy.

FXCK Complacency

We stand on the precipice of change. Don't just witness; be a part of it. Whenever you see injustice, don't just watch—act, challenge, and change.

FXCK The Old Ways

We're here to reimagine and rebuild a brighter future.
