5 Things I Do When Overwhelmed Creatively

Today, I'm diving into something that many of us in the creative world struggle with: feeling overwhelmed. It's a reality we face, but fear not, there are strategies to tackle this. I'm going to share my top five methods that help me regain focus and productivity. Understanding these approaches can unlock a new level of balance and efficiency in your life, ensuring that creativity flows more smoothly.

#1: Meditation for Mental Clarity

Meditation is my first line of defense against overwhelm. It's an effective tool for clearing the mind and regulating emotions, acting as a reset button for my mental state. When I meditate, I'm able to reduce the noise of 'mental chatter' and lower stress levels, making space for creativity.

#2: Prioritizing Top Three Tasks

Next, I tackle my to-do list by selecting the top three tasks that, if completed, would make my day both productive and satisfying. This approach keeps me grounded in the present, focusing on what I can achieve now, rather than getting lost in the endless cycle of past and future tasks.

#3: Voice Notes for Idea Capture

Whenever I'm brimming with ideas, I turn to voice recording apps like Otter or Fireflies to capture these thoughts. Recording a quick rundown of each idea helps me organize my thoughts and ensures that no inspiration is lost. It's a relief to have these ideas safely stored and easily accessible for future reference.

#4: Taking Breaks for Stress Relief

When stress peaks, I step away to take a break. This could be as simple as drinking water, reading something unrelated, or taking a short nap. These breaks are essential for maintaining mental agility and preventing burnout, ensuring I return to my work with renewed energy and focus.

#5: Shifting Focus to Recharge

Lastly, when I'm particularly overwhelmed, I shift my focus to a completely different activity. This change of pace allows my subconscious to keep working on the problem in the background. Often, I return to find that the issue isn't as daunting as it seemed, and my energy is better utilized.

Remember, these methods are more than just strategies; they're an approach to embracing and managing the ebb and flow of the creative process. Implementing them can lead to a more balanced, productive, and fulfilling creative journey.

Maximising Music Revenue Streams

Today, I'll show you how to ensure you get 100% of the earnings from your music.

As an independent artist, you must understand the many revenue streams your music might produce. From performance royalties to sync licensing, each stream adds to your income. What are the benefits of mastering this knowledge? You will not leave money on the table and will fully utilize your artistic endeavors.

Unfortunately, many artists, maybe including you, are losing significant income due to a lack of awareness and management of various revenue streams.

Understanding The Maze of Music Royalties

Many musicians underestimate the complexity of music royalties, resulting in severe financial losses. Here's why.

Reason #1: Lack of Knowledge of Different Royalty Types Artists frequently don't grasp the various forms of royalties, such as mechanical, performance, and sync royalties, resulting in lost revenue.

Reason #2: Not registering songs properly Failure to register music in all essential databases or countries results in a loss of royalties.

Reason #3: Disregarding Neighboring Rights and Sound Exchange Many artists are ignorant of neighboring rights and SoundExchange, which collect royalties for recorded performances.

Reason #4: Not Using A Publishing Administrator Without a publishing administrator like Songtrust, you're unlikely to collect all of your mechanical royalties.

Reason #5: Not Being a Member of SAG-AFTRA or Similar Bodies Joining organizations such as SAG-AFTRA might help you earn more royalties, particularly for performances in audiovisual works.

Here's a step-by-step guide:

Step 1: Educate Yourself on Various Royalty Types

Understanding the various sorts of royalties is key. Performing Rights Organizations (PROs) such as ASCAP or BMI collect performance royalties when your work is played publicly. Mechanical royalties are made when your music is reproduced, disseminated, or streamed and collected by a publishing administrator such as Songtrust. Sync royalties are earned when your music is used in films, television, or advertisements, and they are normally negotiated on an individual basis.

Quick examples: Imagine your song gets broadcast on a French radio station; that is a performance royalty. Mechanical royalties are generated when the same song is streamed on Spotify. If it's utilized in a Netflix series, you'll get sync royalties.

Step 2: Register Your Music Everywhere.

To ensure adequate pay for your song, register it with several institutions in different nations. To earn performance royalties in each nation, register with a Performance Rights Organization (PRO). Also, cooperate with a publishing administrator to collect mechanical royalties. Consider joining SoundExchange to collect digital performance royalties from sound recordings. Each of these organizations addresses distinct parts of royalties, and it is critical to be registered with all relevant entities to maximize your revenues.

Many musicians make the mistake of simply registering with a PRO in one nation, which prevents them from collecting royalties in other territories where their music is performed and streamed. Make sure you're registered with all of the appropriate organizations so you can collect every penny you earn.

Step 3: Join Relevant Organizations to Collect Neighboring Rights

Finally, consider joining organizations like SAG-AFTRA, which can assist in collecting royalties for performances in audiovisual productions. Furthermore, recognize and collect adjacent rights that are owed for the performance of your recorded music (not the creation), particularly on platforms such as satellite radio and internet streaming.

Light at the end of the tunnel: By carefully handling these stages, you can ensure that no money goes unclaimed. These actions, while first scary, will result in a more substantial income from your music career, offering financial stability and recognition for your efforts.

To summarize, while collecting all of your music royalties can be difficult, it is extremely necessary for increasing your revenue as an independent musician. You can ensure the financial rewards of your creative activities by learning about the many sorts of royalties, ensuring that your music is properly registered, and employing the services of organizations such as PROs, publishing administrators, and SoundExchange. Remember that your music is more than just an artistic expression; it is a valuable asset that demands fair pay.

A prime example of why this myth doesn't hold up is my own experience in music-making. There have been numerous days where the idea of creating a complete track felt overwhelming. Yet, instead of pressuring myself to produce constantly, I focused on simply being present in my creative space. Whether it's experimenting with drum patterns, playing with melodies, or organizing my samples and presets, I've realized that creativity isn't just about the end product; it's about the process.

This approach has taught me that not every session needs to culminate in a groundbreaking song. Commitment to the process, being there, and engaging with my work in any form is what truly matters.

Believing that you need to constantly produce to be productive is a significant mistake. It leads to burnout and stifles creativity.

Cultivating Presence Over Production

Instead of fixating on output, focus on showing up. Start by simply being present in your creative space, without the pressure of having to produce something every time.

To transition to this mindset, first understand that creativity thrives under non-pressure conditions. Give yourself the freedom to explore, experiment, and even fail. This approach shifts the focus from the quantity of output to the quality of the creative process.

Actionable Tips for Embracing Presence in Creativity

Tip #1: Set aside regular time for your craft, even if you don't feel like creating. This builds a habit of presence.

The allure of the 'perfect' schedule, the ideal morning routine, or the most efficient time-blocking system can divert your attention from what's genuinely important—doing the work. How many times have you found yourself watching yet another YouTube video about productivity, convinced that your current system just isn't cutting it? How many hours have you spent configuring a new to-do list app, only to realize you've not actually done any of the tasks on it?

Avoid falling into this loop of eternal preparation. Stick with what works and refine it as you go. Incorporate new approaches judiciously, but never let the pursuit of perfection delay your progress. In an ever-changing landscape, especially for artists navigating technology and the creator economy, adaptability is key. Don't sacrifice doing for planning. A few days ago, I tweeted something that seemed to strike a chord with many of you: "web3 is a no-brainer once you understand that besides monetization, it also offers a path for artists to enjoy the freedom to create on their own terms and distribute their work without relying on outdated and predatory gatekeepers. Keep your masters."

Today, let's unpack that a bit more.

In the traditional music industry, artists often find themselves bound by contracts, giving up their rights to their masters and relying on middlemen who may not always have their best interests at heart. The system has been, for many, a necessary evil to reach larger audiences and make a living.

Enter web3—a paradigm shift that changes the game entirely. Through blockchain technology and decentralized platforms, artists now have unprecedented control over their work. But this isn't just about monetization, though that's certainly a big part. It's also about artistic freedom.

With web3, you can retain ownership of your masters, set your own terms for how your work is used, and consumed, and engage directly with your audience. No gatekeepers. No predatory contracts. Just you, your craft, a community that loves what you create, and a public permissionless infrastructure to distribute your work

So, if you're still undecided about diving into web3, consider this: it's not just a new source of income. It's a technology for freedom that empowers you to become the artist you've always aspired to be, on your own terms, at your own pace.

One of the best time-savers in the studio? Templates. Take vocal production or mixing, for example. I have a mix template in Pro Tools that I use every single time. It's pre-loaded with all my auxes, routing, busses, chains, and effects. When it's time to mix, I simply export stems from Ableton and import them into Pro Tools. Boom—I'm ready to dive into the creative work without the tedious setup. If you haven't set up your own templates yet, I highly recommend it. Time saved on the technical stuff is time gained for creativity.

These words could not be truer, especially in the current landscape where artists have more access than ever before to creative control and financial freedom. But this control isn't handed to you; you have to seize it. And the first step in doing so? Understanding the music business down to its core.

When we consider the music industry, it's easy to be captivated by the allure of creativity —the beats, the lyrics, the shows, and the fans. But underpinning all of that is a labyrinth of contracts, royalties, splits, copyrights, clauses, and performance rights organizations (PROs). The music you hear is just the tip of the iceberg. The rest is an intricate framework of legal and financial mechanisms that dictate who gets paid, how much, and when.

Have you ever wondered why some artists with chart-topping singles still struggle financially? It's usually because they don't understand the business side of things. They don't know how to evaluate a contract, what a fair royalty split looks like, or how to register their works with PROs to collect all the money they are owed around the world.

It's vital to treat your music career as you would any other business. Would you start a restaurant without understanding hospitality, supply chain, hiring, and accounting? Probably not. So why jump head-first into a music career without understanding its business aspects?

For those eager to dive into the nitty-gritty, I highly recommend reading "All You Need To Know About The Music Business" by Donald S. Passman. It's a comprehensive guide that answers the hard questions and fills in the gaps that your artistic intuition might have missed.

Remember, knowledge is power, but only if you use it. The better you understand the music business, the more capable you'll be of navigating its challenges, seizing opportunities, and most importantly, effectively monetizing your art.

So take the time to educate yourself. Your art deserves that much.

A few updates happened on Discord over the weekend. First, we introduced #levels, to reward the most active and engaging member with experience points (XP). The more XP you accumulate, the more you move up the levels and the leaderboard. Why?

This will play an important role as we continue to gamify Discord and introduce more rewards and benefits.

A common challenge that many producers face is managing heavy and cluttered sessions. You've got your samples, VSTs, and presets from the production stage, and then you layer on plugins for mixing and mastering. Before you know it, your DAW is crawling, your CPU is gasping for air, and your workflow suffers.

Here's a game-changing tip: separate your production from your mixing. Once you've finished with the production and you're happy with how things sound, export all your stems in audio format. Start a fresh new project specifically for mixing.

Why do this?

Increased CPU Power: By eliminating the resource-hogging plugins from the production stage, you free up more CPU power for mixing.
Better Visibility: With a separate project, you can focus solely on mixing without being distracted by other elements. It's easier to spot what needs adjusting.
Easier Edits: When changes need to be made, you'll know exactly where to go. Is it a production change or a mix change? Your well-organized files will make this clear.
Avoid Over-Production: One of the pitfalls of having everything in a single project is the temptation to keep adding and tweaking. By separating the two stages, you create a natural stopping point, helping to prevent over-production.

Mindset matters when you sit down to make music—or any art form, for that matter. If you approach the task thinking, "I have to make a complete song," it can be intimidating. The weight of that expectation can even lead to procrastination. Instead, try showing up with the simple intention of working on music. No pressure for a finished product; just the act of creating.

For instance, when I'm not particularly inspired, I might spend time making presets or sorting through samples to refresh my library. I also love setting a timer for 1 hour to crank out a couple of beats. The focus here is on the process, not the end result. At the end of the month, I'll usually find I've accumulated a batch of 20-30 ideas, with 4-5 that genuinely excite me. These then become the seeds for full-fledged tracks.

Remember, you're honing your skills with every session, even if you don't produce a "hit" each time. Try this mindset shift and track how you feel after a couple of months. You may just find that removing the pressure to produce a masterpiece every time you sit down frees you to actually do just that.

Constraints can be a powerful tool for boosting creativity. One challenge I like to set for myself is the "30 ideas in 30 days" exercise. The goal is simple: come up with one unique musical idea each day for a month. These could be short melodies, beats, chord progressions, or sound design experiments. The aim isn't to create polished tracks, but rather to push your creative boundaries and accumulate a pool of ideas to draw from.

Another effective challenge is the "one-synth challenge" where you use a single synthesizer for an entire track. This forces you to delve deep into the instrument and explore creative ways to shape sounds. Similarly, the "limited sample challenge" involves picking a small set of samples (5-8) and using only those for a track. By working within these constraints, you learn to manipulate and process sounds in innovative ways, and ultimately become a more resourceful producer.

Here's a little trick I often use to spark creativity and get into the flow. When I hear an insane song on Spotify that resonates with me, I'll download the track from YouTube and use a tool like iZotope RX9 to isolate the vocals. This gives me an amazing vocal sample from a song I genuinely love, providing a perfect starting point.

With the vocals imported into Ableton, the rest often comes naturally. Finding the right vibe, chords, and sounds flow so much faster when I'm already connected to the material. It's a method that's not only fun but also quite effective. In fact, I won't tell you which, but some of my best-performing songs out there started as remixes.

In the hustle and bustle of our busy lives, particularly for those of us in the creative field, it can be easy to neglect self-care. We push ourselves to the limit and pour our hearts and souls into our work, but often forget that it's vital to replenish that energy we're so freely giving.

Whether you're creating music, building a business, or juggling both, remember that productivity isn't solely about the hours you put in. It's about the quality of those hours. And for those hours to count, we need to be in the best shape mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

Getting 7-8 hours of sleep, eating well, and active recovery activities like exercise or meditation are not optional—they're necessary. They reset your cognitive load, preventing burnout and freeing up mental resources for deeper, more meaningful engagement in what you do.

Time spent with family and friends also plays a key role. It rejuvenates our spirit, sparks joy, and reminds us why we're working so hard in the first place.

We don't just want to work hard, we want to work smart. We don't just want to create, we want to create sustainably. Remember, you can only give your best when you're at your best. So, keep hustling, but don't forget to pause and take care of yourself too.

Today, I want to discuss how being a musician entails much more than simply creating music. It involves a wide range of responsibilities! Modern artists are not only musicians but also entrepreneurs, marketers, graphic designers, booking agents, and even SEO experts. Talk about wearing multiple hats, right?

This flurry of tasks can create a mix of stress and anxiety. This is where I encourage you to take a moment to reflect. Remember, it's the music, the art that truly matters at the core. While the rest is important, it shouldn't overshadow what you genuinely love doing.

Take it from me: focus on the tasks that you truly enjoy, the ones that resonate with your creative spirit. And you know what? Those are often the tasks that yield the greatest results! In life, as in music, the Pareto principle, or the 80/20 rule, holds true. Typically, about 20% of your efforts result in 80% of your outcomes. Therefore, concentrate on the 20% that truly "moves the needle.”

For the rest, don't hesitate to delegate. It's okay to share the load and to lean on others for support. Remember, you don't have to do it all.

I’m sure you’ve noticed by now, but I’ve been testing different days and times for this newsletter and figuring out my rhythm. To be honest, I think I love Tuesdays, so I might go back to that starting next week.

This week I've been noodling over a question that's probably as old as humanity itself: why do we collect things? Whether it's Pokémon cards, vinyl records, Hard Rock Café T-shirts, or even those tiny spoons (you know who you are), we all have a tendency to collect things that resonate with us. And it's usually because they bring us joy, trigger memories, or are connected to something or someone we love.

Now, flip that onto the digital side with NFTs. The question I've been pondering is - what makes collecting NFTs fun? Do people get the same thrill from collecting digital artifacts as they do with physical ones? And how can we as creators make this experience even more enjoyable for our fans?

When I think of people collecting vinyl, for instance, they're not just in it for the hunk of plastic. It's about the music on that disc, the experience of listening to it, and the unique sound a vinyl brings. It's a whole package deal. So when we think about creating NFTs, how can we replicate that experience? What can we do to make these digital collectibles as immersive, unique, and enjoyable as their physical counterparts?

How can we push the envelope and leverage tech to make our digital collectibles stand out? Why would someone choose to collect our NFTs over others? How can we gamify the experience and make collecting a fun pursuit rather than a transactional one?

These are just some of the questions I've been wrestling with, and I'd love to hear your thoughts. How can we ensure that our digital creations are not only collectible but also offer a memorable experience to the fans? After all, at the end of the day, it's all about creating something that resonates with the people who love our work. You see, the new landscape isn't about just pushing sales and trying to rack up as much revenue as possible or obsessing over the 'floor' on secondary markets. It's not about the 'I' - it's about the 'We'. We need to flip our thinking and start focusing on our fans - our community.

The Passion Economy And The Future Of Work

This week, let's try something a little different. How about a good old jamming session with your favorite synth? It could be a plugin like Serum from Xfer Records, or a hardware synth that you're particularly fond of. Here's a fun exercise.

First, add the plugin to a channel, and put in a long C note or multiple C notes on the MIDI. It could be a 4-on-the-floor pattern or one long sustained note. Whatever gets you in the groove. Now, route the audio to a second channel and make sure it's set to record.

Now it's time to have some fun! Hit the record button and start experimenting with your synthesizer. Try out different waveforms, add some effects, and play around with the filters. You could even reset the plugin halfway through or try out different waveforms and combinations, such as FM synthesis. The sky's the limit here - let your imagination run wild!

Do this for about 10-15 minutes and when you're done, have a listen. Chances are, you're going to find a 4-bar sample in there that's pure gold. If it doesn't work, don't worry. Just start over and try a different synthesizer.

Remember, not all of your creative moments will lead to a hit track, but the process is where the fun's at.

Keep experimenting and making noise, because you never know when the magic will strike!

Today, I want to talk about something that doesn't receive enough attention. - perpetual learning. You see, in our world today, information is moving at the speed of light, and if we stop learning, we get left behind.

Many people stop their learning journey as soon as they cross the graduation stage. Well, that ain't going to get you very far! This world is moving way too fast for our brains to just cruise along in neutral.

Take me, for example. When I was in college (2013), no one even uttered the words 'social media marketing' in our marketing classes. Fast forward to now, and it's a vital part of any business strategy.

And, let's not forget about the wild world of crypto, machine learning, blockchain technology, AI, VR...you name it. Yes, a few colleges are getting on the bandwagon, but it’s not the case for the rest of the world or the vast majority of the population

What does this mean for us? Stay curious, my friends. Take that curiosity and let it guide you down a rabbit hole of learning. Put in the time, make the effort, and I promise, you'll always be 10 or even 100 steps ahead of the pack.

Remember this: if you want to be ahead of 99% of people, do the things that 99% of people won't do.

So, my friends, keep that learning machine oiled and running. Spend at least 30 minutes to an hour every day soaking up new knowledge. Find what works for you, whether that's reading, watching, listening, doing, or a combination.

Challenge yourself to learn new skills as often as possible. Yes, it will depend on the skill, but keeping your brain active and curious is the main thing here.

Staying on top of your game, staying competitive, and becoming an even better version of yourself...it's all about learning, growing, and evolving.

And, the best part? This isn't just about being better at your job. It's about being a better you - a better person, partner, parent...whatever roles you have in life.

In a world where everyone is distracted, focus is a superpower.

Today's Creative Corner tip is to use granular synthesizers to recycle ideas that you already know you like. If there is a sound or sample you've created in the past that you absolutely love, a great way to rethink or reuse that sound is to put it on a granular synthesizer. From there, explore the infinite ways in which you can tastefully and amazingly transform this sound. The result will be unrecognizable, a new sound based on a sound you already know sounds incredible. Give it a try and see what I mean. When I first tried it, it blew my mind.

Hey there, Happy Tuesday!

Today, I want to get real about something fundamental – the importance of purpose and passion in our craft. It's not always smooth sailing in our work, is it? And when the storm hits, it's that deep-seated love for what we do that keeps us afloat.

When times get tough, it's passion that gives us strength. A strong sense of 'why' we're doing what we're doing can be a powerful motivator to push through challenging times.

Of course, no job comes without its downsides. But if you find something that captivates you, something that you genuinely love 80% of the time, you're in a fantastic place. Yes, life is a mix of highs and lows, but passion can turn those lows into valuable learning experiences.

So, my advice? Follow your curiosity. Dig deep into what interests you and become the best at what you do. Strive to wake up each day, eager and excited to take on the world.

Embrace your goals, follow your passions, and keep moving forward, especially during challenging times. With determination and a clear direction, even the most difficult obstacles can be overcome.

Hey there, Happy Tuesday!

Today I want to take a page from Simon Sinek's book 'Start With Why'. In the landscape of NFTs, I've observed that many artists are consumed with the 'What' or the 'How'. We tend to be concerned with how to sell, what kind of NFT to launch, or how to promote it. However, I urge you to ask the more profound question: 'Why?'.

Why are you engaging with NFTs? What is driving you towards this medium? In my opinion, financial gain alone isn't a sustainable motive. Collectors and users in the web3 space are becoming increasingly discerning, seeking utility, scarcity, and the thrill of owning something special. Simply put, an NFT is just a format – a medium to present a song, an artwork, or even a membership. But ask yourself, what makes your work distinctive? Why would someone choose to collect it?

For instance, open editions, although popular, don't necessarily offer collectors a sense of uniqueness or scarcity – elements often found in limited editions or 1 of 1s.

The fundamental principle I want to stress here is to remember your 'Why' when creating NFTs. Why would someone collect your work? What value are you offering them? We are in an era where NFTs need a purpose and should bring value to their collectors.

And here's some food for thought for next week: What if, instead of focusing on making money for yourself, you focused on making money for your fans? Until then, keep exploring your 'Why'.
