Gatekeepers like Ticketmaster control the flow, scalpers distort markets, and data collection turns every transaction into a surveillance opportunity. As a developer in the Solana ecosystem and founder of ShadowRanch.xyz (where we’re gamifying education to empower the next generation of builders), I’ve witnessed these challenges firsthand. The solution isn’t just incremental improvements; it’s about reimagining the system with principles that prioritize user sovereignty.

This paper draws from my experiences and the ongoing Colosseum Cypherpunk Hackathon, where my team and I are developing a ticketing protocol grounded in cypherpunk values: privacy by default, decentralization, and true ownership. Cypherpunk isn’t just a label—it’s a commitment to pseudonymity, crypto-native tools, and resistance to overreach. We’re building on Solana for its unmatched scalability—65,000 TPS and minimal fees—over alternatives like Ethereum or Polygon. Here, I’ll validate the need for this approach, examine existing solutions like XP and GET Protocol, highlight areas for improvement that we’re addressing, and outline the opportunities ahead. Let’s build thoughtfully and purposefully.

The Validation: An $85 Billion Market Ready for Transformation

The ticketing industry is massive, valued at $85 billion globally, with secondary resale contributing $15-20 billion in the US alone. Yet, it’s plagued by issues: fans pay inflated prices for tickets they don’t fully control, with transfers restricted and data harvested for profit, while fraud costs the sector $1 billion annually. High-profile examples like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, where bots scooped up tickets for resale at exorbitant markups, or Coachella entry glitches that left valid holders stranded, underscore the frustration.

Blockchain offers a proven path forward, as seen with XP and GET Protocol (Open Ticketing Ecosystem). They’ve tokenized tickets as NFTs, reducing fraud through immutable records and enabling fairer royalties for artists. XP has aggregated over 34 million tickets across 110,000 events, while GET(Open) has issued more than 5 million verifiable tickets. This demonstrates real demand: users want transparency, organizers seek better control, and the market rewards anti-scalping measures. Solana amplifies this potential with tools like SPL tokens, the Metaplex standards and Anchor frameworks, allowing cost-effective, high-speed ticketing. The Colosseum Hackathon’s Cypherpunk track aligns perfectly, pushing for potential privacy-focused innovations like ZK-proofed ownership without revealing identities.

This validation highlights a broader opportunity: a shift to sovereign assets where tickets can be lent on DeFi, traded pseudonymously, or redeemed for proof-of-attendance (POA) badges that unlock community benefits. For Solana, it drives ecosystem growth—more dApps, higher TVL, and increased developer activity. In the market, capturing even 5% of secondary resale could yield $750 million+, while challenging Ticketmaster’s dominance in primary issuance. Organizers gain automated royalties (10-20% on resales), and users enjoy genuine ownership without arbitrary restrictions.

The Flaws: Lessons from XP and GET Protocol(Open Ticketing)

I’ve analyzed XP’s Solana-based resale platform and Open Ticketing (GET Protocol’s) Polygon-focused issuance ecosystem. Both have made significant strides, but they reveal gaps in fully embracing cypherpunk principles that we’re working to address.

XP excels in resale efficiency: its Tamperproof NFTs (tpNFTs) securely seal claim codes, with Solana enabling fast P2P trades, AI-driven price alerts to mitigate scalping, and USDC rebates for users. Their $6.2 million seed round in May 2025 reflects strong market interest. However, reliance on custodial wallets introduces trust dependencies—cypherpunks prioritize verification over intermediaries. Potential vulnerabilities in oracle feeds or regulatory pressures (like state-specific resale rules) could compromise pseudonymity without stronger privacy layers. For instance, in a high-demand NFL event, off-chain aggregation might still allow bot interference, and exposed transaction histories could enable unintended tracking. The absence of a native token delays decentralized governance, keeping decision-making somewhat centralized, but is also a straight-forward approach.

GET/OPEN stands out in primary issuance: with 5 million tickets issued, white-label tools for organizers, and programmable NFTs that enforce resale limits and royalties. Their Polygon integration supports affordable minting, and “digital twins” bridge legacy systems, as seen in large venues like Ziggo Dome. The $4.5 million funding and global reach validate their approach. Yet, the B2B focus empowers organizers at the potential expense of user autonomy—fans interact through fiat abstractions without full wallet control. The $GET token’s utility for processing is innovative, but its volatility can affect stability. Privacy remains a concern: transparent on-chain provenance, while useful, exposes attendance data without shielding. In a scenario like a Gucci Mane concert, automated royalties work well, but organizer approvals on transfers can limit true pseudonymity, mirroring some of the controls they’re aiming to disrupt. Polygon’s scalability, while solid, doesn’t match Solana’s for real-time, high-volume resale.

These projects validate core blockchain benefits—NFTs eliminate fakes, smart contracts promote fairness—but they sometimes trade off on privacy and decentralization for accessibility. In an era of increasing surveillance, we need solutions that don’t compromise the ethos, as well as meeting business demand.

The Forge: a Cypherpunk twist on Ticketing

As a developer and founder in the Solana ecosystem I am an outspoken proponent of the foundational ideals the Cypherpunks outlined, and a ticketing solution should be no different. We are developing Solana-native protocol, using compressed NFTs for low-cost minting and we are looking into solution like the Light Protocol for ZK-shielded transfers. No mandatory KYC, no custody—your wallet remains your domain. This is the goal.

The mechanics: Organizers mint will mint as MPL or SPL NFTs, embedding event details ZK-proven for privacy. Sales support fiat-to-USDC ramps, with transactions optionally routed through mixers. Resales are P2P atomic swaps, governed by DAO votes to cap prices fairly. Fraud prevention builds on tpNFT sealing but adds ZK-unsealing at venues—scanners query Solana via Helius without logging personal data. For example, at an indie concert, a fan mints pseudonymously, lends via DeFi for yield, trades shielded (no visible trail), and enters with a wallet-derived QR, earning a soulbound POA badge for future perks. Royalties (15% auto-split) flow transparently on-chain.

We’re addressing XP’s custody reliance with non-custodial integrations (like Phantom) and Open/GET’s transparency issues via ZK-SNARKs—proving ownership without exposure. Anti-scalping uses dynamic, community-governed caps. To ease adoption, we abstract complexities: one-tap fiat buys with opt-in advanced features. Our hackathon MVP will test the full flow on devnet, simulating large-scale events.

Solana stands to gain immensely. Our solution channels TVL into ticketing DeFi (e.g., lending unsold seats) and enhances composability (e.g., MEV-resistant auctions with Jito). With current TVL over $10 billion, privacy-centric applications could accelerate adoption, attracting developers from congested networks. Colosseum could help us scale from hackathon to production at neck breaking speed, from the arena to production.

For the ticketing market, this fractures the $85 billion status quo by blending XP’s resale strengths with Open/GET’s issuance tools, slashing fees by 50% through Solana’s efficiency. It curbs scalping and bots while fostering innovation.

Organizers benefit from direct issuance, automated royalties to fund future events, and privacy-respecting analytics—ZK-aggregated data without personal intrusion. Smaller venues and indies can mint affordably, use DAOs for perks, and avoid high commissions.

End users get the most: pseudonymous ownership means trading without oversight, earning yields on idle tickets, and collecting POA as meaningful digital assets. In a surveillance-heavy world, this preserves financial autonomy—buy an event ticket, protect your data, and evade trackers. We’re building tools that empower individuals while addressing systemic issues.

Moving Forward: Collaborate and Build

Cypherpunks code the future through action, not just words. XP and Open/GET have advanced the space—credit where due—but there’s room to strengthen privacy and decentralization. We aim to fill those gaps. For Colosseum, Solana, and the community locked out of fair access, let’s continue building. We are few with principles, but together we can make an impact. The arena is open.

Follow the progress at https://x.com/cialoneCodes

Christopher Cialone is a Solana developer, Superteam member, ShadowRanch.xyz founder, & advocate for decentralized innovation.

It would appear that we are in the middle of a very precarious situation, and while decentralization promises to empower individuals and safeguard freedoms, recent events like the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov and the re-arrest of the Tate brothers reveal a troubling trend. Durov's detention, under allegations of facilitating illegal activities through Telegram, exemplifies how states target platforms that resist surveillance and censorship. Similarly, the Tate brothers' arrests are part of a systematic strategy to silence critics of mainstream ideologies, showcasing how lawfare is being used to stifle opposition to the globalist agenda.

Elon Musk, another high-profile figure advocating for free speech and privacy, also faces intense scrutiny. His acquisition of Twitter, intended to restore it as a platform for free expression, has drawn the ire of various governments. The U.S., Brazilian, and other administrations, in partnership with big tech, appear increasingly determined to control and manipulate events, data, and, ultimately, our reality.

And of course, there’s the obvious political moves against Donald Trump, and the litany of questions we are left with as he awaits sentencing later in September. The power that is being put on display by runaway legal systems is truly troubling, most especially when we take a step back and look at the way Big Tech has been treating these events, by either downplaying or outright memory-holing what is happening before our eyes. So what exactly is going on here?

This push for control highlights a critical juncture for web3 developers. The technologies we build must be more than just innovative; they must be resilient against these coordinated attacks. Decentralized platforms and encrypted communications are not just tools for privacy—they are the front lines in the battle for free speech and liberty. As governments and big tech tighten their grip, the urgency to create censorship-resistant and privacy-focused systems becomes paramount.

The arrests of Durov, the Tate brothers, and the pressures on Trump, Musk & others serve as stark reminders that we are in the midst of a digital Cold War. The fight for control over information and narrative is intensifying, making it imperative that developers in the web3 space work harder and faster than ever. Building the tools that empower users and resist the forces that seek to silence them is not just a technical challenge—it's a political and moral imperative.

The globalist power structures are intensifying their efforts to control the digital landscape. For web3 developers, this is a call to action. We must continue to innovate, building the tools that will safeguard free speech, privacy, and liberty in the face of increasing repression. The future of freedom depends on our ability to resist and to decentralize. The battle for the soul of the internet is on, and every line of code written today is a step toward ensuring that freedom of expression remains not just a right, but a reality.

Decentralized technologies like blockchain offer unprecedented privacy and autonomy, but they also challenge the traditional power structures that governments are desperate to maintain. By leveraging vague legal frameworks, authorities can justify the persecution of innovators who champion user sovereignty, effectively stifling technological advancements that threaten their control.

Censorship has evolved from merely blocking content to actively dismantling the platforms that provide refuge to free expression. Governments justify these actions under the guise of fighting crime or maintaining social order, but the underlying motive is clear: to regain control over the narrative. Platforms like Telegram, which offer end-to-end encryption and resist data requests, become prime targets because they empower users to communicate without fear of surveillance.

The last few years have seen an acceleration in the use of legal and political power to suppress voices and platforms that challenge mainstream ideologies. Telegram, a platform with over 500 million users, has long stood as a beacon for privacy and free expression. Its end-to-end encryption and resistance to data requests make it a thorn in the side of governments and organizations that prioritize control over privacy.

The arrest of Pavel Durov highlights how far authorities are willing to go to dismantle platforms that empower individuals. While the charges against him are framed as necessary for combating crime, the broader implications are clear. This isn't just about law enforcement; it's about sending a message to other platforms and developers who may dare to offer similar protections to their users.

In the same vein, the Tate brothers have become targets for their outspoken views, particularly against what they perceive as the encroachment of globalist ideologies on individual freedoms. Their arrests, occurring with alarming regularity, appear less about justice and more about silencing voices that do not align with the globalist agenda. These figures, controversial as they may be, represent a challenge to the status quo—a challenge that those in power are determined to crush.

Elon Musk, with his acquisition of Twitter, has similarly attracted the attention of global powers. His efforts to restore free speech on the platform have been met with resistance not just from tech giants but from governments that view unrestricted dialogue as a threat to their influence. Musk's battles are emblematic of a broader struggle between those who advocate for a decentralized, user-controlled internet and those who seek to maintain centralized control.

This coordinated effort to suppress dissent extends beyond the legal and into the technological. Big tech companies, often in partnership with governments, have become the arbiters of what can and cannot be said online. Algorithms are tweaked, accounts are suspended, and content is shadow-banned— all in the name of combating misinformation or maintaining public order. But at what cost? The result is an internet where only certain viewpoints are allowed to flourish, while others are systematically erased.

For web3 developers, this landscape presents both a challenge and an opportunity. The challenge is clear: to build platforms that are resilient to these attacks, that cannot be easily taken down or manipulated by centralized powers. The opportunity lies in the chance to create something new—an internet that truly lives up to the ideals of freedom and privacy that were promised at its inception.

Decentralized technologies like blockchain offer a blueprint for this new internet. By distributing control across a network of nodes, rather than concentrating it in the hands of a few, these technologies can ensure that no single entity has the power to dictate what can and cannot be said. Encryption can protect user data from prying eyes, ensuring that communications remain private and secure. But these technologies are only as strong as the developers who build them. It is imperative that we continue to push the boundaries, to innovate, and to resist the pressures to conform to the demands of those who would see our freedoms curtailed.

The battle for the future of the internet is not just about technology; it's about principles. It's about standing up for the belief that individuals should have the right to communicate freely, without fear of surveillance or censorship. It's about ensuring that the internet remains a place where ideas can be exchanged freely, where innovation can thrive, and where users are in control of their own data.

In this particular war, every developer has a role to play. Whether you're building the next decentralized platform or contributing to an existing one, your work matters. Every line of code is a stand against the forces that seek to control the internet. Every new feature is a step towards an internet that is free, open, and decentralized.

As we move forward, it's important to remember that we are not just building for today, but for the future. The decisions we make now will shape the internet for generations to come. We must ensure that it remains a place of freedom, where censorship is impossible, and privacy is paramount. The stakes have never been higher, and the need for action has never been more urgent.

Awaiting another Black Swan
The globalist power structures are intensifying their efforts to control the digital landscape.

Recent global outages caused by a technical issue in CrowdStrike's software, impacting Microsoft 365 services, have demonstrated the fragility of centralized systems. Thousands of flights were canceled, hospitals faced disruptions, and financial services halted. This incident highlights the dangers of relying on a few major companies for critical services. All accounts claim this is an outage and not a cyber attack, but that as far as I am concerned, that is irrelevant. This brings up serious issues with the way in which we operate as a society--the problem is the centralization of our data, processes and systems. One goes down, and now we are left with a gigantic mess. No one will be held accountable, and millions of people are being effected negatively, so apparently we are only supposed to allow things like this to happen to us, and do nothing to fix such a broken system.

So, What Happened?

The issue was traced back to a CrowdStrike update that inadvertently crashed Microsoft systems globally. Here's how:

Redundancy and Resilience: Decentralized cloud platforms distribute data and computing resources across numerous nodes. This redundancy ensures that if one node fails, others can continue to operate, maintaining service continuity.

Elimination of Single Points of Failure: By removing central control points, decentralized systems reduce the risk of widespread outages caused by a single technical issue.

Enhanced Security: Decentralized networks are inherently more secure as they are less vulnerable to centralized attacks. Each node operates independently, making it difficult for attackers to compromise the entire system.

Autonomy and Control: Users retain greater control over their data and services in a decentralized model. This reduces dependency on major corporations and enhances data sovereignty.

Implementing Decentralized Cloud Services

Adoption of Decentralized Protocols: Technologies like IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) can distribute web content across multiple nodes, ensuring continuous availability even if some nodes go offline.

Blockchain-based Cloud Solutions: Platforms like Filecoin and Storj offer decentralized storage solutions, distributing data across a global network. These platforms incentivize participants to provide storage and bandwidth, creating a resilient and scalable cloud infrastructure.

Edge Computing: By leveraging edge computing, data processing can be performed closer to the source, reducing latency and dependence on centralized data centers. This approach enhances the performance and reliability of cloud services.

Interoperability Standards: Developing and adopting interoperability standards for decentralized systems can facilitate seamless integration and communication between different platforms, enhancing overall resilience and functionality.

Moving Towards a Decentralized Future Beyond dApps

To build a resilient digital infrastructure, it is essential to embrace decentralization. Excessive regulation stifles creativity and imposes unnecessary burdens on entrepreneurs, particularly in the rapidly evolving tech sector. Web3 technologies, which aim to decentralize power and give control back to users, thrive in environments where government interference is minimal. This fosters a culture of experimentation and competition, leading to more robust and user-centric innovations.

Stronger Freedom of Speech

Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of democracy (or democratic republic) & a critical component of the Web3 ethos. In a decentralized internet, individuals should have the ability to express themselves freely without fear of censorship or retribution. This freedom encourages diverse viewpoints, fosters community engagement, and allows for the free exchange of ideas, which is essential for societal progress and innovation.

Has censored information changed your perspective in anyway?

A Party's Push for More Government Power

In contrast to these principles, the Democratic Party in the United States has increasingly advocated for more governmental control and regulation. Policies promoting greater oversight and intervention in various sectors, including technology, can be seen as efforts to manage and influence the lives of citizens more directly. This approach often includes advocating for more stringent content regulations and controls that could impinge on freedom of speech. These pushes for more power can be seen from web3/crypto to environmental regulations, as well as surveillance and censorship via Big Tech companies.

A Party Against Merit?

Making the Democratic agenda appealing to the youth has long been one of the avenues through which the party advances evasive surveillance and over-reaching policies. The undertones of Marxism and Communism are once again in vogue on the coasts. To usher in these ideas and make them more palatable, a war of the classes must be waged. Through various forms of chaos and division, those who wish to separate and divide the public are able to create a ‘victim’ and an ‘oppressor.’ In America specifically, a whole generation has been subjected not only to financial division between the poor and wealthy but also to divisions based on skin color. This tactic complicates efforts to find reasonable solutions based on the merit system, which has been demonized in schools and the media.

Furthermore, token gating appears in industries like Hollywood, where the influence of the party is pervasive. Policies that are not in the public interest are made fashionable with the youth through movies, music, and, of course, the news media. This brings us to the next point:

Media and Big Tech Collaboration

The ideals of the Democratic Party are often introduced to the public in conjunction with efforts by the media and big tech companies. This collaboration creates a power structure that prioritizes convenience over privacy, undermining the principles of user control and freedom central to Web3. By convincing the public that convenience is paramount, these entities push an agenda that places individual privacy and freedom in the hands of a powerful few.

Government and Social Media Collaboration

During the 2020 presidential election, there were instances where the government reportedly worked with social media platforms to manage and censor information.

(Old Twitter, and Meta/Facebook are some obvious examples of social media pushing stories known to be false, and prohibiting users from posting what turned out to be the truth ie - Hunter Biden Laptop, etc) This coordination aimed to control the narrative and protect the interests of the deep state, denying the people access to unfiltered truths. Such actions highlight the risks of centralized control over information, which is antithetical to the decentralized and open nature of Web3.

Media Manipulation of Data Flow

The media has significant power to shape public perception by controlling the flow of information. Selective reporting, framing of stories, and omission of key facts are tactics used to manipulate viewer perspectives. This controlled narrative often aligns with political agendas, further entrenching power structures that prioritize the interests of the few over the many.

As social media is now the new norm in how so many people receive or read about current events, this becomes more of a pressing issue. Do you feel the information you receive is manipulated to steer your perspective?

Big Tech's Legislative Influence

Big tech companies wield considerable influence in shaping legislation. They often lobby for laws that create barriers for smaller developers and decentralized projects, ensuring their dominance in the market. For instance, stringent data compliance regulations and patent controls can disproportionately affect smaller entities, making it difficult for innovative and decentralized Web3 projects to flourish.

Convenience Over Privacy: A Disturbing Trend

Government and big tech companies often place more importance on the idea of convenience over privacy in a strange ploy to gain our data and monitor our movements. This trend sees the promotion of services that prioritize ease of use and seamless integration at the expense of individual privacy. Do some applications seem to be clever data collection mechanisms rather than assistants?

For instance, smart home devices and digital assistants collect vast amounts of personal data under the guise of convenience, creating a detailed profile of users' habits and preferences. This data is then utilized and monetized by these companies, often without the explicit consent of the user. Such practices undermine the fundamental right to privacy and highlight the need for more transparent and user-centric approaches that prioritize individual rights over corporate profits.

Supreme Court's Role in Government and Big Tech Censorship

Recent Supreme Court decisions have paved the way for the government to work more closely with big tech to censor individuals under the guise of managing misinformation. This ruling allows the government to collaborate with social media companies to monitor and control the flow of information, further entrenching the power of a few large entities and undermining the principles of a free and open internet. This development is particularly concerning for advocates of Web3, who see it as a step back from the decentralization and user empowerment that the movement strives for. Even though there was a 6-3 ruling in favor of upholding the ability for government to assist social media in censorship, there was this notable pushback -- Justice Alito wrote the dissent, alleging that “for months, high-ranking government officials placed unrelenting pressure on Facebook to suppress Americans’ free speech”.

Alito argued that the court’s ruling provides “an attractive model for future officials who want to control what the people say, hear and think”.

The ability of the government to leverage big tech for censorship poses a significant threat to freedom of speech and the open exchange of ideas. By allowing such collaborations, there is a risk of creating an environment where dissenting voices are silenced and only approved narratives are allowed to flourish. This stands in stark contrast to the decentralized ethos of Web3, which seeks to democratize information and give control back to users.

Danger of Big Tech and Government as 'Arbiters of Truth'

By making people question what the truth really is, power brokers confuse and confound users by not allowing them to verify their own information. This scenario makes big tech and government the 'arbiter of truth,' which is dangerous for several reasons. It centralizes control over information, allowing those in power to manipulate narratives to serve their interests. This can lead to the suppression of dissenting voices and the propagation of biased or incomplete information. When users cannot independently verify facts, it undermines their ability to make informed decisions and erodes trust in institutions. This manipulation fosters a climate of confusion and dependency, where individuals are less likely to challenge authority or seek alternative viewpoints. Such a dynamic stifles critical thinking and undermines the democratic process, making it crucial to advocate for decentralized systems that empower users to verify information independently.

How Web3 Addresses Censorship and 'Fake News'

Web3 offers solutions to the issue of censorship through its decentralized architecture, which ensures that no single entity has control over information. Blockchain technology allows for immutable records, making it difficult for any authority to alter or censor data. Additionally, decentralized social media platforms, like Mastodon and Minds, give users control over their data and content, reducing the risk of censorship by centralized authorities. The community-driven approach in Web3 fosters a culture of transparency and trust, allowing users to verify information through consensus mechanisms rather than relying on centralized fact-checkers.

In the Web3 community, 'fake news' is addressed through decentralized verification processes and reputation systems. These systems leverage the collective judgment of the community to assess the credibility of information. For example, platforms like Truthcoin and Factom use blockchain to create tamper-proof records of information and its sources, allowing users to trace the origin and verify the authenticity of the data. By decentralizing the verification process, Web3 minimizes the risk of biased or politically motivated censorship, promoting a more open and trustworthy information ecosystem.

The Need for Courageous and Principled Developers

To counter the dominance of big tech, there is a need for courageous and principled developers and entrepreneurs to create businesses, applications, and services that directly compete with established giants. These innovators must prioritize user privacy, ownership, and transparency. Examples of this in the Web3 space include projects like Filecoin, which offers decentralized storage solutions, and Brave Browser, which focuses on privacy and user-first advertising models.

Promoting Education and Awareness

To foster a new age of user ownership and privacy, it is crucial to promote education and awareness about the importance of decentralized technologies. This includes developing educational programs, workshops, and resources that highlight the benefits of Web3 and the dangers of centralized control. Additionally, supporting grassroots movements and community-driven projects can help build a more informed and empowered user base.

MyConclusion

This is alot to take in. Especially if you are skeptical of the validity of this article. That's a good instinct, stick with it. But rather than simply trusting me, I encourage you to do your own thorough research. Then, cross reference. The first step to taking your power back!

The core values of a small federal government, minimal regulation, and strong freedom of speech are integral to the success of Web3 and the broader digital economy. It all goes hand in hand. These principles ensure that power remains decentralized, innovation is unhindered, and individual rights are protected.

As one political party pushes for more governmental control, often supported by media and big tech, and collaborates with social media to manage information, it is crucial to advocate for policies that align with the foundational ethos of Web3. By supporting courageous developers and promoting education, we can foster a future that remains open, free, and innovative.

In an era dominated by tech giants and massive corporations, where centralized entities have long held sway and influence, a new beacon of decentralized commerce and user ownership is rising. From the shadows of obscurity, fueled by blockchain innovation and the fertile grounds of social media evolution, the I ON YOU REVIEWS marketplace emerges—not just as a platform, but as the challenger of the status quo, and a leader in the new era of online transactions.

Imagine a world where your digital identity is truly your own, where your consumer voice resonates with unassailable clarity, and where businesses are incentivized not just to sell, but to genuinely engage and improve. This is not a distant utopia, but the tangible reality we are forging today.

This is the convergence of Farcaster's decentralized social protocol and the untapped potential of blockchain-powered e-commerce. We're not just building a marketplace; we're architecting the future of trust-based, value-aligned digital commerce.

We are beyond excited to introduce a groundbreaking project that aims to reshape the relationship between businesses and consumers. Our decentralized marketplace (de-commerce) built on top of the Farcaster protocol, is not just another e-commerce platform—it's a paradigm shift in how we think about online transactions, user data ownership, and business accountability. This is not just another marketplace -- our platform is where users and businesses work together to create better experiences and products through direct user feedback in the form of reviews and concerns.

So, why Farcaster?

Before diving into the specifics of our marketplace, it's crucial to understand why we chose Farcaster as our foundational protocol. Farcaster is a sufficiently decentralized social media protocol that allows developers to build decentralized applications with a focus on user identity and data ownership. By building on Farcaster, we inherit several key advantages:

1. Decentralized Identity: Users can maintain a consistent identity across various applications built on Farcaster, reducing the need for multiple accounts and enhancing the user experience.

2. Data Portability: User data isn't siloed within our application. Users can take their reputation, reviews, and history with them to other Farcaster-based apps.

3. Network Effects: We can tap into the existing Farcaster user base, providing immediate value and fostering faster adoption.

4. Interoperability: Our marketplace can easily interact with other Farcaster-based applications, creating a rich ecosystem of interconnected services.

The Vision

At its core, our marketplace is driven by a simple yet powerful idea: businesses should work collaboratively with users to address concerns and issues arising from product or service interactions. We believe that by creating a system of immutable reviews, incentivized problem-solving, and transparent dispute resolution, all built on the Farcaster protocol, we can foster a more equitable and trust-based commercial environment.

Key Components

1. Farcaster Integration Layer: This component handles user authentication and profile management, leveraging Farcaster's decentralized identity system.

2. Smart Contract Layer: A series of Ethereum-based smart contracts manage the core functionalities of our marketplace:

Marketplace Contract: Handles listings, purchases, and overall marketplace operations.

Agreement Contract: Facilitates pre-transaction agreements between users and businesses.

Advertising Token Contract: Implements our native token, incentivizing businesses to engage positively with users.

Dispute Resolution Contract: Provides a fair and transparent arbitration process.

Token Economics Contract: Governs complex aspects of our token ecosystem, including staking and rewards.

3. Review System: Allows users to leave immutable reviews after providing proof of purchase and use.

4. AI-powered Search Feature: Enables users to find businesses that align with their values and needs.

The User Experience

Imagine a user named Alex who wants to purchase eco-friendly home goods. Here's how their journey might unfold on our platform:

1. Alex logs in using their Farcaster identity, immediately accessing their reputation and history from across the Farcaster ecosystem.

2. They browse the marketplace, using our AI-powered search to find businesses that align with their values of sustainability and ethical production.

3. Before purchasing, Alex can view immutable reviews from other Farcaster users, getting a transparent view of the business's reputation.

4. Upon deciding to buy, Alex enters into a smart contract agreement with the business.

5. After receiving and using the product, Alex provides proof of use and leaves a review, which is stored immutably on the blockchain.

6. If any issues arise, Alex can directly engage with the business. The business is incentivized to address concerns promptly, earning advertising tokens for positive resolutions.

7. In rare cases of unresolved disputes, Alex can initiate a transparent arbitration process.

Throughout this journey, Alex maintains ownership of their data and can carry their reputation and history to other Farcaster-based applications.

The Business Perspective

For businesses, our platform offers a unique opportunity to build trust and loyalty with customers across the entire Farcaster ecosystem. The immutable review system ensures that their efforts to provide quality products and services are permanently recognized, while the advertising token system provides tangible incentives for positive engagement.

Why This Matters

In an era where data ownership and privacy are increasingly crucial, our platform stands out by putting control back in the hands of users. By building on Farcaster, we're not just creating a marketplace; we're contributing to a larger ecosystem of decentralized applications that prioritize user sovereignty.

For investors, this represents an opportunity to be part of a project that's at the forefront of the Web3 revolution in e-commerce. We're leveraging the network effects of Farcaster while introducing innovative mechanisms for trust-building and dispute resolution.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to develop our platform, we're exploring additional features such as:

Integration with other Farcaster-based applications to create a richer user profile and reputation system.

A governance system allowing our token holders to vote on protocol upgrades and arbitrator selection.

Enhanced AI capabilities to help users navigate the growing ecosystem of ethical and value-aligned businesses.

With all of this emerging technology and advancements in artificial intelligence, we believe we should be improving the experience for users to work with businesses, not simply consume what companies push out to users. While there are times users are known as 'consumers', we just don't look at it that way, and we are building our platform around that simple difference.

We are not big tech-we are you. Users should own their data and have their opinions of services taken seriously. And while big tech and other applications may simply remove or hide user reviews in a way to boost sales, here in web3 we believe the users experiences and their data privacy is more of a priority. With this application we are doing our part in ushering in a new business model to replace the surveillance model currently being utilized.

Is Web3 — often touted as a remedy for central authority abuses — being used as a diversion to promote underhanded centralization by certain founders? Here we explore how this ideal can be manipulated by founders for personal profit and power. One illustrative case is that of Sam Altman and Worldcoin.

Worldcoin’s “Proof of Personhood”

Worldcoin, presented as a revolutionary digital identity solution, aims to address global challenges by providing proof of personhood through biometric data, specifically iris scans. The project envisions a system where each person can prove their uniqueness, enabling fairer access to digital services and potentially addressing issues like bots and identity fraud.

I have many professional and personal reservations when it comes to the Worldcoin project — first, it seems awfully convenient that both Sam Altman’s Worldcoin and the OpenAI project center around the collection of very sensitive and personal data — using the idea of community as a guise for both projects strikes me as disingenuous and maybe something more sinister. While both projects seem to be assisting in the efficiency of processes, at what cost, and at whose ultimate benefit is the ultimate question. Are we only help another monster organization grow even stronger, while appearing to decentralize user identity?

The Risks of Centralizing Biometric Data

Despite its promising facade, Worldcoin’s approach raises significant concerns. Centralizing biometric data, such as iris scans, creates a single point of failure and a potential target for misuse. The collection and storage of such sensitive data under the pretense of decentralization undermine user privacy and security. If mishandled or exploited, this data can lead to unprecedented surveillance, control, and identity theft. At the heart of the Worldcoin project is hashing of data, but are those hashes sufficient for protection of physical user features? And, if pressed by a rogue government, could Worldcoin feasibly hand over our data to save themselves from governmental lawfare? I certainly am not confident in this approach, as there are multiple other less evasive ways to decentralize out identity information.

Here’s how Orb (Worldcoin’s Iris Scanner works)

Iris Capture: The user looks into the Orb, which uses advanced camera technology to take a detailed photograph of the user’s iris. The iris has a unique pattern for every individual, making it an effective biometric identifier.

Data Encryption: The captured iris data is encrypted to ensure privacy and security. This encryption helps protect the user’s biometric information from unauthorized access or misuse.

Hash Generation: The encrypted iris data is then used to generate a unique hash. This hash represents the individual’s identity without storing the actual image or raw biometric data. The hash is a one-way function, meaning it cannot be reversed to reconstruct the original iris image.

Verification: When the user attempts to prove their identity in the future, they look into an Orb again. The new iris scan is encrypted and hashed, and this hash is compared to the stored hash. If the hashes match, the user’s identity is verified.

Decentralized Storage: Worldcoin aims to store these hashes in a decentralized manner, leveraging blockchain technology to ensure that no single entity has control over the biometric data. This approach enhances security and aligns with the principles of decentralization.

Privacy Protection: Worldcoin emphasizes privacy and claims that the iris data is not stored, only the hashes are. This ensures that even if the data were to be accessed, it could not be used to reconstruct the original iris images.

I remain skeptical…

The Paradox of Decentralization

Worldcoin’s strategy highlights a troubling trend where the rhetoric of decentralization is used to build centralized power structures. Instead of empowering users and distributing control, projects like Worldcoin risk consolidating power in the hands of a few. This paradoxical use of decentralization rhetoric can mislead users into believing they are gaining autonomy when, in reality, they are submitting to a new form of centralized authority.

Ethical and Practical Implications

The ethical implications of using biometric data for digital identity are profound. Users must trust that their data will be handled responsibly, yet the potential for abuse remains high. Moreover, practical issues such as data security, user consent, and equitable access need thorough consideration. Worldcoin’s deployment strategy, which involves convincing millions of people to submit their biometric data, raises questions about informed consent and exploitation, particularly in underprivileged communities.

Connection to ChatGPT and the Data Ecosystem

Sam Altman’s leadership of course, extends beyond Worldcoin to OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT. This connection raises additional concerns that I touched on above. ChatGPT, like other AI models, is trained on vast datasets, including user interactions. The potential integration of biometric data from Worldcoin with the extensive data collected through ChatGPT could create a powerful and invasive data ecosystem. Such a system could grant unprecedented control over personal data, enabling Altman and associated entities to dominate various sectors by leveraging detailed personal and biometric information. This would not only stifle competition but also contradict the foundational principles of decentralization, exacerbating centralization risks.

The Original Ethos of Web3

The inception of Web3 was driven by a desire to flip the current business structure, not merely change the players in charge. The core ethos of Web3 centers on user ownership, data sovereignty, and decentralized control. It aims to dismantle the hierarchical and exploitative models of Web2, where user data is monetized without their consent or benefit. Instead, Web3 promises a future where users have control over their data, identity, and digital interactions. We are watching in real time as throwbacks from the big tech era use convenience and ‘trust’ to gently massage users into adapting their brand of web3 — essentially a bastardized version of what big tech has been doing since Google created a search engine as a way to mine our data.

User Ownership and Data Sovereignty

Web3’s foundational principle is that users should own their data. This ownership extends beyond mere control to include the ability to monetize, share, or protect their information as they see fit. Decentralized identities (DIDs) and self-sovereign identities (SSIs) are pivotal in this regard, enabling users to manage their identity without relying on centralized entities. Projects that genuinely uphold these principles offer transparent, secure, and user-centric alternatives to traditional digital identity solutions.

Flipping the Business Model

The Web3 community aims to invert the traditional business model by prioritizing user empowerment over corporate profit. Not to say that businesses shouldn’t profit, just not in the shifty way we have all been accustomed to. Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) exemplify this shift, where decision-making power is distributed among all stakeholders rather than concentrated in the hands of a few executives. This structure ensures that the benefits of digital innovation are shared equitably and that communities have a say in the direction and governance of projects they support.

The Risk of Co-optation

However, the ideal of Web3 is at risk of being co-opted by those who seek to replicate the centralized models of Web2 under a new guise. Founders like Sam Altman, who wield significant influence over both Web3 and AI technologies, can exploit their positions to create centralized power structures. This not only betrays the decentralization ethos but also perpetuates the same power imbalances that Web3 seeks to dismantle.

Decentralization should empower individuals, not serve as a veneer for centralized control. Vigilance and critical examination of projects claiming to uphold decentralization are crucial. As the Web3 space continues to grow, ensuring that technological advancements genuinely benefit the broader community rather than a select few is imperative.

By recognizing the cunning tactics of founders like Sam Altman, who may misuse the decentralization premise for personal gain, we can safeguard the true essence of Web3 and protect user sovereignty.

The Case for Less Intrusive Decentralized IDs

To truly uphold the principles of Web3, we need decentralized identity solutions that respect user privacy and autonomy. Unlike biometric systems that require intrusive data collection, alternatives like Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) and Verifiable Credentials (VCs) offer a less intrusive way to establish digital identities. These systems leverage cryptographic techniques to prove identity without revealing sensitive information, ensuring that control remains firmly in the hands of the user.

Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs)

DIDs are a type of identifier that enables verifiable, self-sovereign digital identities. They are created, owned, and managed by the individual, without requiring a central authority. DIDs can be used to authenticate users across various platforms and services, providing a secure and privacy-respecting way to establish identity. This approach aligns with the original ethos of Web3 by ensuring that users retain control over their identity data.

Verifiable Credentials (VCs)

VCs are digital statements that can be cryptographically verified. They allow users to present proofs about themselves (such as age, citizenship, or qualifications) without disclosing unnecessary personal information. This method of identity verification reduces the need for centralized data storage and minimizes the risk of data breaches and misuse.

Avoiding the Concentration of Power

That’s basically our whole thing in web3. It is essential to keep decentralized identity solutions free from the influence of data-heavy founders who may have conflicting interests. The shift of OpenAI from a non-profit, open-source initiative to a for-profit entity under Sam Altman’s leadership is a cautionary tale. Initially promised as a democratizing force in AI, OpenAI’s transition highlights how quickly centralized power can emerge, even within projects that begin with noble intentions.

By developing and adopting decentralized identity systems that prioritize user control and privacy, we can prevent the centralization of power and ensure that the benefits of Web3 are distributed equitably. This approach will help maintain the integrity of the Web3 vision and protect users from the potential exploitation and surveillance risks posed by centralized identity solutions. Remain skeptical.

Building the Future of Trust: I On You Reviews, a Review and Reputation App on Farcaster

In a time where digital trust is paramount, the development of a robust review and reputation system is not just innovative—it's essential. Leveraging the decentralized social network Farcaster, we are excited to unveil our vision for a new kind of review platform, one that gives users ownership of their data and ensures the immutability of their voices through blockchain technology. Here’s a deep dive into the architecture and the meticulous planning behind this groundbreaking application.

A Little Background

How do we best align users with companies who share their values and goals? Through transparency and trust. How do we build trust? With supplying users with accurate data - so our users can make better informed decisions to form their opinions. For this reason we have created the I On You Search Query, which triggers an API call off chain to gather empirical data on businesses and services. And we coupled that with a review system which incentives business with an ad token. Let’s dig into it.

Our application is designed to harness the power of decentralization to create a fair and transparent review system. Built on Farcaster, the app allows users to post reviews that are immutable and stored on-chain, providing a layer of trust and transparency previously unseen in review platforms. Users retain ownership of their data, and companies are incentivized to address reviews through an innovative advertising token system. Additionally, the app integrates with off-chain AI APIs to provide users with comprehensive information about companies within our ecosystem.

Let’s get technical

Requirements

We’ve carefully outlined the requirements for this application using the MoSCoW prioritization method:

Must Have:

User authentication and authorization integrated with Farcaster.

Capability for users to post immutable on-chain reviews.

Mechanisms for users to maintain ownership of their data.

Incentive system using advertising tokens for companies to address reviews.

API integration for querying off-chain AI to gather company information.

High-level security measures to protect user data and privacy.

Should Have:

User-friendly interface for posting reviews and querying information.

Notification system to alert companies of new reviews.

Analytics dashboard for companies to track reviews and responses.

Multi-language support for global reach.

Could Have:

Mobile application support.

Integration with other social media platforms.

Advanced filtering and search options for reviews.

Gamification elements to encourage user participation.

Won't Have:

In-app messaging system (initial release).

Direct financial transactions between users and companies.

Method

The architecture of our app is both comprehensive and detailed, designed to ensure scalability, security, and user satisfaction.

Greetings to my digital pioneers! Ready to break free from centralized platforms controlling your data? Let me briefly introduce you to Farcaster—a game-changing decentralized protocol designed to build on top of, giving birth to Warpcast: a social network. Built on the Ethereum blockchain, Farcaster empowers you to fully own and control your digital identity and data. Sounds amazing, right?
We have only just begun to tap into the power and freedom this protocol offers. Let's get semi-technical and jump into this thing.

Why You Should Join Farcaster

Anyone who knows anything about me, knows that i have a 'hang-up' otherwise known as "I don't want to be censored" coupled with "Users should own the data they create". So, as you will see, it is pretty natural that I found Farcaster - which led me to Warpcast. Let's dig in.

User Ownership and Control: At the heart of Farcaster is the principle of user ownership. Unlike traditional social networks where your data is controlled by central entities, Farcaster lets you maintain full ownership of your accounts and data. By registering with an Ethereum transaction, you get a unique Farcaster ID (fid) that's completely yours. This means you can move your identity and connections across different applications without being tied to a single platform. Say goodbye to account lockouts, censorship, and data misuse!

Seamless Identity Management with ENS: Farcaster integrates with the Ethereum Name Service (ENS), allowing you to manage your usernames on-chain. You can choose between free, off-chain ENS names managed by Farcaster or more secure on-chain ENS names. This flexibility ensures you can start quickly with minimal setup and upgrade to more secure options as needed.

Robust and Flexible Messaging System: Farcaster supports a variety of message types, including public posts (casts), reactions, and verifications. Each message is signed with a unique key issued to the application, ensuring secure and verifiable interactions. Additionally, the protocol's design stores messages off-chain in a distributed network of hubs, enhancing performance and reducing costs while maintaining security through cryptographic signatures.

Innovative Application Framework with Frames: Frames are a powerful feature that allows developers to create interactive and authenticated experiences directly within the platform. This opens up opportunities for building dynamic applications such as polls, live feeds, and interactive galleries, all seamlessly integrated into the social network. Frames extend the OpenGraph standard, turning static embeds into engaging, interactive components. Imagine transforming your posts into mini-apps that can engage your audience in real-time!

Decentralized and Scalable Infrastructure: Farcaster’s hybrid architecture combines the best of on-chain and off-chain technologies. Core identity functions are secured on-chain using smart contracts, while most user interactions occur off-chain in a peer-to-peer network of hubs. This design ensures scalability, cost efficiency, and robust data integrity. On-chain components ensure that identity and ownership are secure and verifiable, while off-chain components handle the bulk of interactions, reducing costs and improving performance. The result? A fast, efficient, and secure network that can grow with its users. There are of course nuances involved with using Warpcast, but the same goes for any other social media app. It is both (for the most part) Intuitive, and engaging:

The Warpcast Advantage

Warpcast, the official Farcaster client, offers a streamlined experience for both beginners and advanced users. It simplifies on-chain transactions and provides an easy-to-use interface, making it simple to join the Farcaster network, manage accounts, and interact with others. Warpcast also supports the creation and management of channels, enabling communities to engage in focused discussions and share content around specific topics. With Warpcast, you can dive into the Farcaster ecosystem effortlessly and enjoy the full benefits of decentralized social networking. Disclaimer: I am a 41 year old software developer and business owner/mad scientist -- so there are times I feel like I am getting out of touch with all the trends of the day, and vernacular and there is something incredinbly interesting and comforting about using Warpcast, interacting and reading what is important to others I follow. Not overly technical, there are some kinks to work out before mass adoption is reached, but there are conversations being had, your input is important, and Warpcast facilitates this. Our differences are minimal when we realize all we have in common on our journeys. I call it enlightened, decentralized and distributed. And Farcaster is sufficiently decentralized.

Why Sufficient Decentralization Works

Sufficient decentralization is all about balancing security and efficiency. Critical components are decentralized to prevent central control, while other aspects are managed centrally for performance. So, what does that even mean?
This means:

Security: Key operations like identity and ownership are secured on-chain, providing robust security and data integrity.

Performance: Off-chain operations handle user interactions quickly and cost-effectively, ensuring a smooth and responsive user experience.

User Control: Users retain full control over their data and identities, minimizing the risk of censorship and ensuring data privacy.

By combining the security of on-chain operations with the efficiency of off-chain processes, Farcaster offers robust security without compromising scalability and user experience. This makes Farcaster and Warpcast ideal for users seeking a secure, user-centric social network.

All of that technical jargon means this: the important aspects of the applications are decentralized and not in the hands of one entity. Because of that, data is more secure since it does not depend on only one point of failure, or success. This is the great conundrum we developers face - getting people to even care about decentralization. It requires responsibility, right? If we are in charge of our own data, and there is an issue - it's our own fault. Who to complain to other than referring to documentation? That translates to educating users to be more informed of the weight of their decisions. Too often we all just click whatever button is needed to get to the next screen. But what are the ramifications of some of these permissions we agree to?

Well, we agree to surveillance. There is no need to steal any data from us, if we simply always agree to giving it away to Big Tech. Have we become too comfortable with the conveniences offered by companies like Google, Meta, & Microsoft? The short answer to this is yes of course. But will users choose speed and convenience over responsibility for their own data? Do users mind if they are spied on - but the return is they are perfectly marketed to and the items and interests they have are essentially auto-filling their inbox, and SMS? We have our work cut out for us in more ways than one, but Farcaster and apps like Warpcast give us that avenue towards the digital freedom I know we all seek.

Getting to the root of this issue and educating those who are not truly aware is the next step to massive adoption, and that is an everyone task. We are all evangelists (to steal a Bitcoin term) This is not some secret we are keeping to ourselves, the more users who know and understand all of this, the better off all of us are.

Embrace the Future!

Farcaster and Warpcast are redefining social networking—putting users in control of their digital identities and interactions. By adopting this platform, you can experience the benefits of decentralization, enhanced security, and the freedom to build and innovate without the constraints of traditional, centralized systems. It's time to take control of your digital life and join the future of user-owned digital identity with Farcaster and Warpcast today. The future is upon us, all of us are shaping every moment. Let us all create the best version of the future, together.

The attack, carried out by UNC5537, used stolen credentials from malware such as Lumma and Raccoon. These credentials allowed hackers to gain access to customer accounts and extract data using a utility named FROSTBITE. This led to significant financial extortion attempts.

Centralized Vulnerabilities and Decentralization as a Solution

Centralized Weaknesses: Centralized systems, like Snowflake, are attractive targets due to their aggregation of data. This breach demonstrated how a single compromised credential could lead to extensive data exposure.

Decentralization: By distributing data across multiple nodes, blockchain technology eliminates single points of failure. For example, if Snowflake’s data had been decentralized, the impact of the stolen credentials would have been contained to only a fraction of the data, significantly mitigating the breach’s overall effect.

Immutable Ledgers: Blockchain’s immutable ledger provides a transparent and traceable record of all transactions. This would enhance accountability and security, ensuring that any unauthorized access attempts are immediately visible and traceable.

User Ownership and Control

Ownership: Blockchain technology enables users to have full control over their data. Unlike centralized systems where data is managed by third-party providers, blockchain allows individuals to store their data securely and control access through encryption keys.

Access Management: In the Snowflake breach, hackers exploited the lack of multi-factor authentication (MFA). Blockchain systems can integrate MFA and other advanced security protocols inherently, ensuring that access is more secure and robust.

Specific Examples and Mitigation

Credential Compromise: The breach involved malware like Lumma and Raccoon stealing credentials. In a decentralized blockchain system, even if some credentials are compromised, the distributed nature of the network ensures that the breach is contained and does not lead to widespread data theft.

Data Extraction via FROSTBITE: Hackers used FROSTBITE to extract data. In a blockchain system, data extraction attempts would be logged immutably, making it easier to detect and respond to unauthorized activities promptly.

Financial Extortion: The breach led to significant financial extortion attempts. Decentralized systems reduce the risk of such scenarios by ensuring that no single entity holds all the valuable data, thereby minimizing the potential reward for attackers.

The Snowflake breach underscores the critical need for decentralized security measures and user ownership models. We all need to start to think outside of the box a little bit here. Blockchain technology provides a robust framework for enhancing data security through decentralization, immutable ledgers, and user-controlled access. By adopting these principles, we can build more secure and resilient systems that protect against the evolving landscape of cyber threats, even if that means challenging some of the most established players in the game. This is not the first breach of this nature, and it will not be the last. Embracing blockchain’s decentralization capabilities is not just an advancement in technology but a necessary evolution in securing our digital future.

We are building out, not only new technological solutions, but also a new way business model for the modern world. We have been usurped, and our privacy has been finagled away. So many of us willingly agree to the terms and services in order to utilize applications for free, but nothing is free. Before we have a massive mindset shift towards user ownership, we first must announce the problem to the public. And I will do so through an example:

If we no longer needed to pay for our mail with stamps, and sending our mail was free — that would seem like a pretty strange deal for a few reasons. How would the mailman get paid? How come it’s all of a sudden a free service, you ask? Services are not free, hmm...

Well, the post office goes on to explain that in order for the mail to be delivered for free, the post office will now open your mail, read it, and begin to keep a file about you, your mail, and everything contained in it. Furthermore, the post office tells you they will need to put a microphone and a video camera inside your residence, that way they can tell companies what you like to do, wear, your schedule and the best way to reach you. While this seems far-fetched, this is exactly what all of us have agreed to when we agree to use free email, utilize social media for free and any other service quite honestly. They sell our data to businesses in order for business to aggressively market, and also manipulate us through what we see on our feeds. The algorithm is precisely designed to use every bit of information gathered—to better ‘serve’ the consumer. But, the consumer is actually also the product being bought and sold.

Understanding Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs) and Profile NFTs

Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs): DIDs are a new type of identifier that allows verifiable, self-sovereign digital identities. Unlike traditional identifiers like email addresses, which depend on centralized entities, DIDs are created, owned, and managed by the individual. This self-sovereignty is enabled by blockchain technology, which provides a decentralized, tamper-proof record of identity.

Profile NFTs: Profile NFTs take this concept further by representing a user’s identity and reputation on the blockchain. These tokens can include various attributes such as credentials, achievements, and even social reputation, all under the user's control. Since these NFTs are stored on the blockchain, they are immutable and verifiable by anyone.

Why Decentralized Identity Matters

Privacy and Security: Centralized systems are vulnerable to data breaches and misuse of personal information. DIDs ensure that individuals retain control over their data, sharing it only with trusted parties.

Data Ownership: With DIDs and profile NFTs, users own their identity data rather than relying on corporations. This shift ensures that personal information is not exploited for profit without consent.

Interoperability: Decentralized identities can be used across multiple platforms and services without needing to create new accounts for each, enhancing user experience and security.

Reduced Censorship and Control: Centralized entities can alter, revoke, or censor identities and credentials. Decentralized identities are censorship-resistant, ensuring continuous access and control for users.

Why Big Tech Resists User Data Ownership

Economic Interests: Big tech companies profit immensely from collecting, analyzing, and selling user data. User-owned data models threaten this revenue stream, as they would require user consent and likely compensation for data usage.

Control and Power: Data ownership equates to power in the digital age. By controlling user data, big tech companies maintain a competitive advantage, influencing user behavior, advertising, and market trends.

Monopoly Dynamics: Centralized systems thrive on creating ecosystems where users are dependent on their services. Decentralized systems disrupt this dependency, promoting a more competitive and open environment.

The Future with Decentralized Identity

Adopting DIDs and profile NFTs means stepping into a future where individuals have true control over their digital lives. This paradigm shift is crucial for:

Empowering Individuals: Giving users back the power over their personal data and digital identities.

Promoting Fair Practices: Encouraging transparency and fairness in how data is handled and used.

Enhancing Trust: Building systems where trust is inherent in the technology, reducing the need for intermediaries.

In the evolving landscape of the internet, decentralized identifiers (DIDs) and profile NFTs offer a revolutionary shift towards user-owned digital identities. Unlike traditional centralized identifiers controlled by big tech companies, DIDs empower individuals by allowing them to create, own, and manage their digital identities independently. This self-sovereignty is bolstered by blockchain technology, ensuring privacy, security, and verifiability. By adopting these decentralized systems, we can protect our personal information from being exploited for profit without our consent.

Profile NFTs further this concept by encapsulating a user's identity and reputation on the blockchain. These tokens can include various credentials, achievements, and social reputations, all under the user's control and immutable by design. This decentralized approach disrupts the power dynamics currently dominated by big tech and governmental entities, which have shown a tendency to collaborate in ways that undermine public interests and societal welfare. Through decentralized identity solutions, we can reduce censorship, enhance security, and foster a more equitable digital ecosystem.

Spreading the adoption of DIDs and profile NFTs represents a significant step towards reclaiming power from centralized authorities. Each piece of data owned and managed by individuals weakens the grip of big tech companies and governmental surveillance. As more users embrace these technologies, we inch closer to a future where privacy, transparency, and user empowerment are prioritized over corporate and state control. This paradigm shift is essential for building a fairer, more secure digital world where individuals truly own their data and identities.

We can do this, together.

(citing Tornado Cash information from https://cointelegraph.com/news/tornado-cash-founder-prison-defi-eu-struggles-finance-redefined). This conviction and subsequent prison sentence place all developers at the forefront, setting us up as martyrs in the quest for decentralization of information and user data ownership. Make no mistake, this is a direct assault on our liberties and creative expression as software developers who solve real world problems for users. The fact that this hasn’t happened earlier is surprising to me. There has been a global push from many government officials to tighten their grip on the flow of information and power and there is no better example of this than in decentralized finance . This is dangerous territory, and I knew this showdown was coming sooner or later, for all of us.

Accusations will arise, claiming developers create systems that allow for the facilitation of illicit activities, such as money laundering, and the spread of hate speech. These accusations are just smoke screens. The powers that be do not want a decentralized web3 structure challenging the status quo. They despise censorship resistance & the decentralization of finance and information. Now that software development is more accessible than ever before and the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT and the various LLMs, there is a formidable opponent to global servitude, which governments & existing corporations fear. They would prefer if we were all compliant, content with our smartphones, reality TV, and mindless entertainment. Similar to the famed Roman Circus, give the people entertainment & they cannot possibly have the where-with-all to address well laid out plans.

Governments, many in the investment banking system & the tech giants are colluding in a disturbing attempt to silence the people. Surveillance capitalism has birthed a monster. The United States and China, in particular, have engaged in a corrupting dance, each influencing the other in a grotesque power play. It’s unimaginable to most that these entities would concoct such an audacious plan, but when you step back and consider, it couldn’t be any other way.

Yet, the biggest issue we face is that no one sits back and thinks about this. People are too distracted or too busy working, dealing with the faced paced world & unprecedented flow of information. Those who do ponder this and speak up are systematically silenced, picked off one by one. Take, the accusations against Russel Brand for instance, or the very obvious WikiLeaks example ofJulian Assange - either discredited and attempted humiliation, or in the case of Assange, far worse. There are many others. This will not stop. We have a generation of misinformed and uneducated youth more concerned with their identities than their freedoms. This was designed from up high. Today the youth cheer for censorship opposition, under the guise of compassion. My generation aimed to do things differently than our parents, promoting ideas like no losers and equal outcomes through trickery and fancy wordplay. When citizens are ill informed, and have not developed a strong ability to think critically they are less likely to challenge their rulers. This is not about left or right; we are beyond that as a society. And the grip is tightening, fast.

How much time do we have to act? It's difficult to determine that, but I pose a for instance. Artificial Intelligence has developed so quickly, for public use - look how far that has come. Where there is good there is always the chance of the bad, so this technology is also being used against us, the same way it is being used for our benefit. Without a significant change in how we interact, we will lose the ability to communicate ideas and organize effectively. This will require a concentrated effort from all sides—left, right, and center. We must recognize the alarming signs. When the US government became the largest employer, it was a clear indicator that our liberties as citizens were being eroded, yet it went unnoticed. People looked at the proposed good the government claimed. When Covid appeared and we had to shut down all of our businesses, and literally the world stopped was another key indicator but the fear of appearing out of touch & public humiliation silenced dissent, a major red flag.

When the citizens silence themselves, that comes from deep programming of thought - that could only have come about through those that gather data about people, and those who disseminate and break down that data to build profiles on the citizens. Then it is simply a matter of triggering actions. And while this all seems so complicated when taken as a whole, it's basically just multiple conditional statements acting in accordance with each other.

Part of the challenge lies in the foundation upon which our children and many young people have learned to approach problem-solving and their understanding of the end goal. Privacy and freedom of speech seem to hold less importance than they once did - at least as far back as I can recall. The convenience of applications and programs that utilize predictive analytics with real-time user data has contributed to our current situation.

We often fail to recognize the sacrifices we make when we allow our shopping data to be tracked, our geo-locations to be shared at all times, and social media platforms to remove 'harmful content' (determined by the individual platform) - all part of the data dilemma. With search engines like Google tweaking their algorithms, the best-optimized pages appear to represent the truth, simply because it's easier to ask Google a question than to conduct our own genuine research. We have become intolerant of each other, and all trusting in companies like Google, Meta and Microsoft.

Now, they are locking up developers for creating applications that some user used in an illegal manner, not intended by the developer. This is madness. Understanding the law's significance, the courts have just set a precedent, justifying future actions against similar developers & technologies. How far are we from a world where the only sanctioned technologies, businesses, products or services will soon be state-approved. The idea of America was borne our of smaller government, yet it seems like the government is only growing, expanding and becoming more intrusive. We have more rules in New York State than almost anywhere else in the entire world-- how "free" does that sound? This is where we are headed. As an American, I understand the global impact of our actions. When America speaks, the world listens. The stakes have never been higher, especially now that socialism and communist ideas seem to be very 'chic' .

As software developers in the web3/blockchain space, we must resist this encroachment on our freedoms digitally and IRL. The web is complicated to follow at times, that's the point, overcomplicate the issue so most won't get involved. That does not apply to us, not developers. We are on the cusp of change, always. We are the creators, the innovators. But it seems like those that have succeeded in tech already, the big tech giants and conglomerates intend to keep their power, their pull and their status through colluding with governmental agencies in official and unofficial capacities to legislate away competition, silence opposing thought through censorship resulting from the collection of our data.

An important election is approaching, with outspoken individuals on both sides. The media, seemingly fully complicit with the current powers, spreads half-truths and misrepresents events and words in cooperation with certain digital platforms. With so many examples of tech companies and government agencies working together I will only mention the biggie: old Twitter and current Meta, censoring questions, concerns and thoughts in regard to Covid, at the direction of the government. Whoever hides the most information, is up to something. An unholy alliance has been formed, most likely promising crumbs of power in exchange for complicity in enslaving the rest of us. But we are more. And we are resilient.

We rely on technology for everything—sharing information, conducting business, and exchanging value and ideas. They are in control all of it. This is why they are locking up developers who dare to challenge their setup with the idea of decentralization. I have devoted my life to liberating minds through data decentralization. Data may seem trivial, but it is the crux of our privacy & of our liberty. As developers and engineers, we cannot allow them to continually pass laws that incrementally grant them more and more power. We are being plundered and bamboozled. It has reached a point where their desire to censor opposing views is no longer hidden. The traditional education system has been infiltrated, tainting the foundation of knowledge, which pepople pull from to build their decision making process, ensuring that conclusions are all but predetermined by the surveillance state. This is a serious issue.

We must wake up, organize, and act decisively. Educating others & standing on our principles is the first step. The most important step. Informed users make informed decisions. So, we must inform. Our digital sovereignty, actual liberties and the future of decentralized technology depend on it. The battle for freedom is far from over, and we must stand united to reclaim our rights in this digital age.

As I sit back on this particular evening, pondering over the evolution of our digital world, it strikes me how the realms of privacy and freedom are perpetually challenged in our contemporary age. It’s a time when our digital rights feel more like privileges that can be revoked at a whim by those wielding power. Amid this landscape, decentralized technologies such as blockchain and the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) emerge not just as tools, but as bastions of hope—guarding our liberties like silent, steadfast warriors.

A Dive into Blockchain: The Backbone of Decentralized Integrity

My journey into understanding blockchain was less about the hype and more about its core principle: decentralization. This isn't just technology; it's a revolution in managing trust, devoid of traditional gatekeepers. At its heart are:

Blocks: Each block, a digital ledger of transactions, securely chained to the next, stands as a testament to transparent record-keeping.

Miners and Nodes: These are the unsung heroes, validating and maintaining the pulse of the blockchain, ensuring it breathes integrity with every transaction.

The essence of blockchain, with mechanisms like Proof of Work (PoW) and Proof of Stake (PoS), is its ability to democratize data integrity, stripping away the need for central authorities. Take Bitcoin, for example—it’s not just a currency but a rebellion against centralized financial control, and applies to data in general - not just financial transactions. Understanding blockchains:

Blockchain as a Running Receipt - an analogy

Imagine you’re at a group dinner, and instead of splitting the bill at the end, you decide to keep a running tab or receipt of who paid for what throughout the evening. This receipt is passed around the table, allowing everyone to see and verify each transaction as it happens.

Transactions: Adding to the Receipt

Each time someone buys a dish or a drink, it gets added to the receipt. In the context of blockchain, every transaction (like someone buying a dish) is publicly announced and recorded. For example, if Alice pays Bob 5 bitcoins, this transaction is announced to all participants in the network, much like announcing at the table, "I've paid for Bob's steak."

Blocks: Closing Out a Section of the Receipt

Blocks: Each block, a digital ledger of transactions, securely chained to the next, stands as a testament to transparent record-keeping.

After enough transactions have accumulated, or a certain amount of time has passed (like maybe after every course of the meal), you decide to close out that section of the receipt. In blockchain, this is akin to forming a block. This block contains a list of recent transactions—say, all the transactions that occurred during the appetizers.

The first person to solve this problem (seal the block) announces it to the table. If everyone agrees (verifies the solution), that section of the receipt is considered closed and complete. This person is then rewarded for their efforts, maybe with a free drink or dessert, similar to how miners are rewarded with cryptocurrency.

Chain: Linking the Sections

Each new section of the receipt (block) includes a reference to the previous section’s summary (hash). This links them in a continuous line, forming a chain. If someone tried to change a transaction in a past section—say, claiming they didn’t order a dessert when they did—it would be obvious because the summaries wouldn’t line up. It would be like trying to change a past order on a receipt after everyone has already seen and confirmed it.

The Whole Receipt: The Blockchain

At the end of the night, the entire receipt represents a complete, unalterable history of all transactions (orders) made during the dinner. In blockchain terms, this complete receipt is a public, transparent ledger of all transactions that have taken place across the network, from the beginning of time to the present.

Unpacking IPFS: A Beacon for a Decentralized Web

Moving beyond the mainstream, IPFS fascinated me with its unique approach to data—storing pieces of information across a network, each marked by a unique hash. It's akin to scattering countless digital breadcrumbs across the globe, yet being able to trace every piece back to its origin effortlessly.

What is IPFS - a quick breakdown, and why tech like this is vital

IPFS —InterPlanetary File System—a groundbreaking technology that’s reshaping how we think about storing and accessing our digital content. Picture this: instead of having all your digital files in a single warehouse where everyone must go to retrieve them, IPFS disperses them across a vast network of garages (nodes), each holding a piece of the data. This method not only speeds up the web but fortifies it against censorship and outage as there's no central failure point. IPFS, although slow at times can be used with Pinata to deliver data securely and quickly,

Swimming in similar currents are technologies like Swarm and Arweave. Swarm offers a decentralized storage and communication system akin to IPFS but focuses heavily on peer-to-peer file sharing, ensuring data isn't just available but also dynamically and efficiently distributed. Arweave, on the other hand, pioneers a novel data storage that backs data with sustainable and perpetual endowments, allowing information to be stored forever—truly, an archive for the ages. These platforms aren’t just about storing data; they are about reclaiming the web, ensuring it remains free and immutable, a bastion against the ever-encroaching waves of control. We will focus on IPFS here

Why It Matters: IPFS is more than technology; it's a philosophy that challenges the very framework of how data should be handled. It promises a web that's faster, more secure, and impossible to censor. This isn’t just about improving the internet—it’s about reshaping its very foundation.

Synergy of Blockchain and IPFS: Crafting Fortresses in the Digital Realm

The convergence of blockchain and IPFS paints a picture of a future where digital fortresses safeguard our online interactions:

Decentralized Websites and Apps: Imagine web platforms free from the control of any single entity, resistant to censorship and downtime, thanks to IPFS and smart contracts via Ethereum using the EVM.

Immutable Voting Systems: Here, blockchain ensures that every vote cast is an indelible mark of one's choice, while IPFS preserves these choices as immutable records.

This isn’t hypothetical; it’s real, with projects building for the good of users - in direct opposition of the current model set forth by Big Tech Giants - to be covered in the following article.

Confronting Challenges and Looking Ahead

Yes, the path of decentralized tech is strewn with challenges—scalability and speed, and a legal framework still playing catch-up and sometimes ‘got-cha’. But the horizon is not just promising; it’s vibrant with the potential for growth and widespread adoption. And it is our chance. How often are we given the opportunity shape the way people receive and interact with information? Data

Data, when collected, seems a mere byproduct of the digital conveniences we enjoy from smart suggestions on e-commerce platforms to personalized content streams on social media. However, this data is also used in less transparent ways:

Predictive Algorithms: Our shopping habits, location data, and even interaction times are fed into algorithms designed to predict—and influence—our future behaviors.

Emotional Manipulation: Companies manipulate emotional responses by adjusting what news and content we see, essentially controlling the mood and tone of the information consumed, often to drive deeper engagement or sway public opinion.

Economic Exploitation: Dynamic pricing strategies adjust what price you see based on your spending habits and location, often leading to personalized pricing that isn’t in your favor.

Educating Users and Influencing Lobbyists

Breaking free from Big Tech's stranglehold begins with education and ends with action. Here’s how we can start:

1. Widespread Education Campaigns

Digital Literacy Workshops: Conduct workshops and webinars that teach people about the importance of data privacy, how to secure personal information, and how to recognize and counteract manipulation online.

Partnerships with Educational Institutions: Integrate data privacy and digital rights into school curriculums, preparing the next generation to be more aware and skeptical of how their data is used.

2. Engaging with Lawmakers

Lobbying for Transparency: Support and collaborate with privacy advocacy groups to push for laws that require clearer consent forms, transparent data usage policies, and strict penalties for violations of user privacy.

Promoting Decentralized Models: Advocate for the adoption of decentralized technologies in public services to reduce dependency on centralized platforms that exploit user data.

What Individual Users Can Do Now

In the shadow of these tech giants, individuals often feel powerless, but there are practical steps one can take to begin reclaiming control:

Adopt Privacy-Focused Tools: Use browsers and search engines that do not track user activity, such as DuckDuckGo or Brave, and consider communication tools that encrypt data like Signal or Telegram.

Educate Yourself and Others: Stay informed about the ways data can be used and abused. Share this knowledge with friends and family to create a more informed user base.

Support Alternative Technologies: Engage with and support technologies that prioritize user privacy. Utilize platforms like Mastodon over Facebook, Warpcast over Instagram, or Peertube or Rumble instead of YouTube, which are not built on the foundation of maximizing user data exploitation.

Moving Us Toward a Freer Digital Future

During the fast paced days so many of us experience, let us always remember and never forget that each action we take online shapes the digital world we are a part of. By choosing privacy-respecting tools, educating ourselves and our communities, and advocating for fair digital laws, we actively participate in loosening Big Tech’s grip on our data and our lives. Together, informed and empowered, we can steer the digital future towards a landscape that respects our privacy as much as our participation.

Empowering Users Through Decentralized Technology

While we navigate the dark waters of digital surveillance and data exploitation, there emerges a beacon of hope in the form of new, decentralized & distributed technologies that offer more than just security — they offer a chance to align our spending and support with our deepest values. The project I am building is a decentralized and distributed reputation and review system. This platform leverages blockchain's immutability to restore trust and integrity to our digital interactions by aligning users with companies that champion their values.

The Foundation of the I On You Review System:

Blockchain and Value Alignment

This system is not merely a tool for reviews; it is a movement towards a transparent marketplace where every transaction and endorsement is recorded on a blockchain, immutable and transparent. Here’s how it fundamentally shifts our interaction with digital platforms:

1. Aligning Values

User-Company Alignment: Users can discover companies that not only provide the products or services they need but also champion the causes they believe in. This alignment is crucial in fostering a marketplace where economic exchanges contribute to societal well-being.

2. Supporting Legislation

Advocacy Through Spending: Each purchase supports companies that are actively working to promote legislation aligned with user values. This system makes each dollar spent a vote towards legislative change, providing a direct link between consumption and political advocacy.

Regaining Control with Decentralized Technology

This system illustrates a practical application of decentralized technology to regain control over personal data and extend influence beyond traditional consumerism into active civic engagement. Mine is not the only decentralized application being built - there are many, but we are under-represented, and out-gunned in terms of attention and funding. Part of the problem is the incentive system that we operate under, and that incentive system has been bastardized with the help of corrupted, or at the very least very disingenuous, politicians and their henchmen. We can be legislated away by the powers that be, or lawfare can be waged, and we can be sued into oblivion. Support is needed, in the form of attention, education and financing. Oddly enough, the funding isn't the biggest issue so many face - it's exposure.

Struggle is needed in order to be our best. The learning process, for instance, is not the most pleasant at times, yet, that is how we learn, trial and ERROR. The error is needed. The same way the human body needs to have some sort of obstacles to overcome in order to build itself stronger (working out and lifting weights is a struggle - yet we become stronger ) So too with the way in which we receive information and data - when something is too free, and too easy - it is not, we just pay with our privacy, and with data and emotional manipulation. I think we are coming to a point where more and more people see that News that is 'free' is more of a control mechanism than it is actually news or events.

The same goes with web applications and services online. Nothing is free. If we don't pay with money, how are we paying? With our privacy! It is always best to make informed decisions, and we can make the best decisions, when we have the most relevant and untampered information.

Identify Beliefs and Support Matching Companies

Blockchain for Transparency: Every review and company rating is stored on the blockchain, ensuring that records cannot be altered or deleted. This transparency helps build trust and encourages more honest feedback, enhancing the reliability of the system.

Immutable History as a Guard Against Manipulation

'O, who will watch the watchers?'

Securing Our Digital History: We live in a time where our historical data can be manipulated or selectively presented - how disturbing is that? Part of the answer for us is a decentralized, distributed and immutable network - blockchain stands as a guard against such corruption. By leveraging blockchain, the platform ensures that the historical reputation of companies and the authenticity of user reviews are preserved, immune to the whims of those who might wish to rewrite them.

Future Implications and Expanding Influence

As this platform grows, its potential to influence both market and political landscapes increases. Users empowered with information and a clear understanding of company values can make more informed decisions, leading to a market that rewards ethical behavior and punishes malpractice or misalignment with user values.

A New Form of Digital Interaction

This project is more than a technological innovation; it is a pathway to a future where technology enhances our ability to act according to our principles. In this future, blockchain doesn’t just secure transactions—it secures our values, our beliefs, and our voice in a world that seems increasingly controlled by a few.

By stepping forward with this system, we challenge the status quo, offering a tangible solution to the disillusionment many feel about the digital age. It’s a call to action for everyone who believes in the power of technology to enhance not just efficiency, but equity and integrity in our global community.
