2. Stewardship proposal passed

3. Call to action: curate visual artists from Vietnam

Over the last months, the community has created a shortlist of artists to pitch to COLORS’ curation team for shows to be recorded in Vietnam. When the shows come out, we are preparing to shine a spotlight on the visual arts scene of Vietnam. Proceeds from the NFT sales will go directly to the artists, project contributors and community treasury.

2. Stewardship proposal live - vote by Nov 7!

We recently put our stewardship proposal up for community discussion on Discord. DAO members (holders of the Founding Pass NFT) can now vote on the proposal.

It is the final stage of the governance committee model outlined in our recent Town Hall session.

The proposal includes:

• The nomination of 3 stewards to help build governance rails for the community, be a touch point for project leads, and help members with proposals.

• The institution of a governance committee that includes the core team and stewards.

• A 2000 USDC fee to be allocated towards the stewards for the entire season. (~3 months)

3. Community Highlight notes: Brooke D.

In this week’s Community Highlights call, we learned more about Brooke D., the artist currently featured in our Community Gallery.

Brooke is a musician, songwriter, author, poet, teacher, psychic medium, and multidimensional artist. She spoke about being bold and courageous as an artist and shared that her “heart is bigger than her body”.

“I really believe artists are the raw nerve of society.” - Brooke D.

Brooke shared how she balances her multiple creative pursuits and the interplay between all of them. To her, creative expression is a “cyclical path not a straight line path.”

She seeks to always be experimenting and trying new things: “If you know what I'm doing next, then I'm doing it wrong". Brooke aims to not only create for the present moment but for the future. She emphasised how important it is to her to stay true to what she feels called to express rather than compromising to cater to trends: “What is popular doesn’t always mean what’s deep.”

Brooke D. is a musician, songwriter, author, poet, teacher, psychic medium, and multidimensional artist in New York. Born and raised by entrepreneurs in the Bay Area, CA, her work is infused with a sense of bravery, authenticity, and a willingness to evolve. 4. GroundSpace: communal healing

Community members Ero, Mr.GreatFool and Letfrz kicked up a new format called Ground Space which is all about communal healing. The format will provide space for our global community to come together, support each other, and share their honest reflections about different topics in a safe space.

For New Moons it's all about setting goals and planting seeds for the future. For Tuesday’s new moon, the hosts will be opening energy talks, hosting a guided hypnotherapy session and some divination at the end of the call.

5. Vietnam curation: phase 2

Over the past months we have been curating Vietnamese music artists alongside the COLORSxSTUDIOS team. While this early advisory input manifests into a highly anticipated series of shows, the community is now exploring how to create adjacency and extension of the moment these shows start dropping. Think: web3 world-building.

We are currently kicking off our research cycle by reflecting on phase 1 and envisioning goals for phase 2. One thing we already know: we will be exploring visual talent from Vietnam to work on NFT drops with, to pair with the release of the shows.

6. Short updates

• NFT gallery: we are starting reach out to the curatorial board’s first picks. Meanwhile, we’re heads down in designing & spec’ing the gallery, which will also function as a launchpad and marketplace for community-curated NFT releases by artists from around the world.

• New York IRL with Refraction: we got a grant from the Refraction DAO to organise an event in NYC. It will bring together creatives from across our communities to showcase art, participate in workshops, exchange learnings and enjoy great music. The project team is looking for more leads on venues. If you can help, drop into the channel.

6. Scenius

During our Weekly Talk on Wednesday, we reflected upon the concept of scenius, originally put forward by pioneering artist Brian Eno.

Art featured in our Community Gallery has mainly been curated from works created by our community members so far. The Community Gallery curation team will shift to also curating more work from artists not yet in our community.

2. Community playlists: new release

A community playlist curation team has formed and today we are publishing the first playlist co-curated by 15+ community members. This playlist contains 10 tracks with a similar sound to what we know from COLORSxSTUDIOS and features several artists who are members of our community.

New community playlists will be released every Friday, alternating between playlists curated on Spotify one week and a new Ooh La La playlist the next week.

3. Governance committee proposal + stewardship team nominees

This week the nominees to form our Stewardship team for this season were put forward. The Stewardship team will join the Core Team to make up the Governance Committee. Following valuable feedback and discussion with DAO members, it has been decided that extra conversations and steps may need to occur before the proposal can be moved to Snapshot.

4. Founding pass NFT seasonal mint

If you are a holder of one of our Founding Pass NFTs which give you access to our DAO, we have been working on a new seasonal mint for you which we will be sharing more details on soon. If you don’t already have a pass, you can purchase one here.

5. Editorial + content contributions

We will soon be opening up the process for editorial and social media content contributions. If you would like to get involved, keep an eye on the #editorial channel on Discord for next steps.

6. Core team focus

Right now the core team is focusing on these areas in addition to projects already mentioned in this update:

• Community NFT gallery: supporting the curation process with connections and direction. We are also building out the technical functionality and design for the NFT gallery.

• Vietnam curation: the community has been working alongside the COLORSxSTUDIOS curation team to co-curate for upcoming shoots of A COLORS SHOW in Vietnam. We have rounded up phase 1 with a reflection session this week and will then proceed to phase 2, through which we’ll explore the potential of a web3 layer to this curation cycle.

• Partnerships: we are talking to a number of exciting partners that will help us bring in larger budgets for top-notch content production, NFT drops, events, and other types of activities. Please feel free to ping @basgras or @Jeremygrinberg should you want to explore a partnership.

• Notion: we are continuing to update our Notion to give all members the information and tools they need. Recently we have been supporting community members to begin using project boards for better coordination of projects.

2. Merged & carbon offset

We're SO excited about the post-merge future of Ethereum, which also makes it ~99.95% more energy efficient. To celebrate, we've just offset the carbon from our Founding Pass NFT drop so far with Aerial.

3. Calling editorial talent

When we made our Discord largely community-only following our Founding Pass NFT drop, our intention was to reduce the noise, so that we can start building community narratives that can be projected far beyond the Discord.

We are quietly working on setting up editorial and content strategies. If you have expertise in this area, we invite you to join the community or say hi in the #editorial channel on Discord if you’re already a member.

Once the community NFT gallery goes live in coming months, we also aim to launch accompanying editorial for the art and artists that are to be featured.

4. IRL with Refraction

Several community members came together to put together a proposal for a cross-community collaboration with Refraction (a ‘decentralized festival’). The proposal was awarded a $5,000 budget to set up its in-person event in New York.

6. Core team focus

Currently the core team’s attention is split among various priorities not already mentioned in this update:

During our weekly Portuguese-speaking call we invited JUNE. She's a Brazilian singer and songwriter from Florianópolis. In an exceptionally open and honest conversation, she shared about the process of accepting herself as an artist, about feeling lonely after finishing a long awaited project and also about the creation process of her recently released album album "Crying For Attention".

"I am MP, and I am a 24 year old queer Vietnamese digital artist originally from the Chicago area. I struggle with motor and spatial dysgraphia, so anything involving drawing/writing by hand is a rather stressful and unpleasant task for myself. My artwork tends to be extremely sporadic as a result, and it is a raw embodiment of my present emotions and feelings during the time of creation. My work often contrasts vibrant colors with dark and surrealist themes to emphasize both my scattered process and my range of experiences with my mental health."

2. Meet the curatorial board: community NFT gallery

The votes are in. Curators contacted. And this week they’ve already had their first project call. Our first season’s round of curation will be represented by 5 people in Brazil, Mexico, Spain, and the US.

Meet Fumbles, Juniper Yun, Leticia, Paloma, and Sean Thielen-Esparza.

They will work to identify artists to launch our community NFT gallery with.

3. Governance process explained

During the Town Hall this week we outlined our community governance:

To ensure transparency, efficiency, and accessibility within our governance process, we are developing a Governance Committee, which will consist of the members of the Core Team and seasonally elected community members that we call Stewards.

The Governance Committee is in charge of reviewing and discussing submitted proposals and helping to lead the community through the proposal process to lead to a community vote on Snapshot.

The Governance Committee will ensure proposals sent to Snapshot are aligned with the mission, vision, and values of our DAO and ones that benefit the DAO in generating revenue and a pathway to be self-sustaining.

Coming up soon: a proposal for our first team of Community Stewards to kick off our Governance Committee.

“I go by KAANG, I am a 24 year old painter and rapper from Los Angeles. I've been doing both since I was very little. My current style is an amalgamation of single line figurative gestures and destructive abstractions to represent my emotions. I use this format of painting to process my mental illness, and overwhelming feelings. This piece is called Critical Pacing it came in the midst of losing a job, a relationship ending and a medication change around the same time.”

5. Vietnam curatorial research: shortlists & longlists

We have partnered with COLORSxSTUDIOS to help curate future shows. Through this exercise in collaborative symbiosis, we will learn how to link processes between COLORS and the community plus create novel revenue streams to benefit our treasury and project contributors.

Over the past weeks, the project contributors have been building playlists and collecting information on local artists in Vietnam. We will soon be moving from our personal shortlists to a community longlist, before trimming that back down to a shortlist.

Next Wednesday we’ll be joined by the COLORSxSTUDIOS curation team for our weekly curatorial research call. We’ll align with them on next steps and learn what it takes to get to a great shortlist. RSVP.

6. What the core team is working on

1. Membership directory for Founding Pass holders. Our goal is to make it easier to navigate the community and for people who are considering buying an NFT pass or becoming a contributor to see what they’ll becoming a part of.

2. Community NFT gallery. We’re setting up the curatorial board and basic processes, plus thinking through design questions for mechanisms of upcoming drops.

3. Partnerships. We are in the talks with a number of DAOs and organizations to find synergy between COLORSxCOMMUNITY, COLORSxSTUDIOS, and themselves. The goal: bring revenue to the treasury, so we can run more projects, create grants, and proactively compensate more contributors.

4. Notion overhaul. Based on recent community feedback, we are setting up new dashboards, so people can find out more about our missions, get involved, and better understand what’s going on. Live before the Town Hall!

From August 9 to August 21, we're featuring Cyshimi.

A transdisciplinary artist, Chinese and Taiwanese Brazilian. (b. 1998)

Their research explores issues of ancestry, identity, beauty and body through sculptures, performance, digital art and nails. For Cyshimi, nails are “Performative Sculptures”, a term coined by the artist who affirms that their nails are not just a static object, but a sculpture that shapes the performativity of bodies. They are a symbol of resistance, empowerment and identity. Cyshimi sees each nail as a new world, built by shapes, colors and textures that, when together, cross those who see and use them.

4. Community application review: live now!

Ahead of our previously announced Discord overhaul, we’ve launched a new community feature.

If you’re in the community, you should now see a channel called #🌞│new-applicants-review.

This channel is used to collectively decide which new members are accepted into our community.

You can vote with a ☀️ sun emoji on applicants which you feel would be a good fit for our community and its needs. Once an application has received 10 upvotes, the applicant will receive an e-mail to welcome them into the community.

Next Monday (Aug 15), we are closing most of our Discord to non-Community members. Make sure you join the Discord, apply to the community and / or get one of our Founding Pass NFTs.

5. Opening soon: NFT gallery curatorial board applications

If you’ve been keeping up, you should know by now that we are working on our own NFT gallery to onboard and spotlight exceptional artists in web3.

Our goal is to harness curation as an art form. Therefore, we will not do '“upvote my song”-style popularity contests, but instead the idea is for the DAO to appoint a curatorial board for the first season of the community NFT gallery.

These curators will be responsible for putting together the first season of art (music, visual, mysteries). Together with the artists and DAO treasury, they will get to share in the upside of those NFT drops.

Next week we are opening applications for the curatorial board. Verified community and DAO members will be invited to apply. Are you ready? To prepare, think about what qualifies you as a curator and what your vision for curation is.

6. What the core team is working on

The core team is focused on a number of projects. These include:

1) Membership directory for Founding Pass holders. Our goal is to make it easier to navigate the community and for people who are considering buying an NFT pass or becoming a contributor to see what they’ll becoming a part of. Est. late August.

2) Community NFT gallery. We are iterating on the design and technical set-up for our community’s NFT gallery. Through it, we will be able to curate and spotlight exceptional artists in music & beyond. Est. September.

3) Partnerships. We are in the talks with a number of DAOs and organizations to find synergy between COLORSxCOMMUNITY, COLORSxSTUDIOS, and themselves. The goal: bring revenue to the treasury, so we can run more projects, create grants, and proactively compensate more contributors.

4) Notion overhaul. Based on recent community feedback, we are setting up new dashboards, so people can find out more about our missions, get involved, and better understand what’s going on. Est. late August.

5) Vietnam curatorial research. Project management for the project, as well as liaising between COLORSxSTUDIOS and COLORSxCOMMUNITY.

6) Discord overhaul. Working on the final mile to bring a focus and structure to our Discord. We just shipped a new application flow with community-wide reviews. Next week, we’re making the final steps in the process.

Community NFT gallery: curation brainstorm

We are working on our own gallery which will allow us to put the spotlight on artists from around the globe. This week we brainstormed around the type of art we want to curate, how curation should work, and how value might flow.

Next steps:

• Marie will share further iterations of designs for the gallery

• The core team will facilitate the foundation of a curatorial board, voted in by the DAO for specific timeframes

Curatorial research: brainstorms + incoming tracks

Every week at 3pm CET / 9am EST we hop on a call to discuss community curation for an upcoming series of shows COLORSxSTUDIOS will be shooting. This week we covered:

• What are criteria that we will look for in artists?

• What can community-native curation look like? (ie. regardless of A COLORS SHOW format)

• What could NFT drops around this curation cycle look like?

• What are other revenue streams artists & the DAO could benefit from?

Meanwhile, music submissions from people in our target location in South East Asia have started coming in. DAO members can find songs in the #trax channel and access a Spotify playlist that captures most of the submissions.

Next steps:

• Start actively identifying & highlighting exceptional artists

• Lock in 2-3 revenue generating concepts that can fund the DAO treasury. This will then be reviewed by the COLORSxSTUDIOS team, so we can proceed in partnership.

A new channel has been created for community #playlist-curation.

We will begin testing Ooh La La and focus on curating Web 3 native artists. The curation team will work to deliver a bi-weekly playlist and invite the featured artist on the playlist cover to the Community Highlights.

From July 25 to August 8 we’re featuring Janice Mascarenhas.

Janice Mascarenhas is an afro-brazilian creative director and hairstylist researching history from a collective past through hair and ceramic pieces. They have been researching braids for 6 years shining a light on how hair connects black people around the world as a tool of resistance, communication and aesthetic expression. By mixing digital art and art pieces their video installation make people understand the importance of hair for black people.

What’s a creative community without a playlist? A group is forming to start curating regular playlists. Community and DAO members can learn more about it by navigating to the COLORSxCOMMUNITY Playlist thread in the community chat on Discord.

Key takeaways from an initial meeting:

• We will post a new playlist bi-weekly using Spotify and Ooh La La (Web 3 music aggregator) and share on our socials.

Community IRL events

We are preparing a proposal for RefractionDAO’s creative grants. The people working on this are exploring events in multiple cities that will have performances, web3 education, visual arts, local community connections, editorial components, and a link to our upcoming community NFT gallery.

Discord channel reorganization

The Discord channel reorganization has kicked off.

• Announcement channels are now largely grouped together in a section called Updates.

• Different workgroups and projects now have their own sections near the top of the channel list, only visible to people in the DAO or verified community.

• The channels for all localities and the various languages have been switched to opt-in. You can now go to the Server Customization category near the bottom of the channel list and start opening channels for different places in the world.

Curatorial research collaboration

The community is teaming up with COLORSxSTUDIOS’ curation team to research artists for a series of upcoming shows in South East Asia.

This week, we brainstormed:

• What will we look for in artists? (criteria)

• How do we spotlight relevant talent towards the COLORS team, the community, the world?

• What could the revenue models for the DAO be?

• COLORSxSTUDIOS is about to enable their crowdsourced information funnel, so hopefully over the next week we’ll start getting artist submissions in and we can get a better picture of what we’ll be working with.

Community reflection session

We used our Weekly Talk time on Wednesday (27.08.) to have a collaborative session on FigJam thinking about the type of contributors and community members we’re looking for and how we could best identify these people.

Community application form

We are reorganizing our community, by

• Reducing the amount of channels that are publicly visible and asking all people wanting to enter the server to submit an application. People who currently do not have the Community or DAO role would also have to fill in this form to continue being able to access most channels in our server.

• This application to join our server is seen by the entire community and DAO. Everyone can vote. Maybe with a little sunshine ☀️ emoji → We set a threshold, e.g. 10 votes to get in.

• Once accepted, people get access to a few basic community channels as they get onboarded into workgroups.

• We can keep certain announcement channels and the public stage public and accessible to all. Local channels will also be public to create community on-ramps, but opt-in only.

Based on our discussions in the session, core team member Sorrel has drafted an updated version of the application form to join our community. She’s kept a lot of elements from the existing form but also added some new questions to focus more on contribution and specific skills/ areas of expertise people who are applying have.

Please leave any feedback and suggestions for changes via comments by 01.08. After that she’ll integrate your suggestions and set a new version of the form live. This form can be updated again at any point as the needs and foci of our community shift.

Transparency documents

To better involve the community in the various domains of operation, we’ve drafted two documents to create greater transparency. These explain the status quo with its constraints and imperfections.

Our journey as a community DAO spinning out of a centralized brand will be unique. While the opportunities from such a partnership (or symbiosis) are exceptional in the space, some of the obstacles and hurdles are unique too.

Discord reorganization

The Discord is getting an overhaul. The goal is to bring more focus to the work we are doing as a community. Some channels will be archived, some others will become opt-in.

The biggest change is that we will increase the barrier to entry: nearly all channels will be accessible only to people with a DAO or Community role. The latter can be obtained via an application form, with applications being reviewed by the community. We intend for this change to bring more thoughtfulness to how new community members will participate. We also hope that this will make us as a community think more about how we can project out into the world, beyond our Discord.

We will start making the first changes in the coming week.

Curatorial research: next steps

Quick reset: COLORSxSTUDIOS is preparing for the production of new COLORS Shows and an editorial series in a country in South East Asia. They have kicked off their research process and are inviting the community to participate.

This means that as a community, we’d be able to contribute to the selection of artists for upcoming shows. Here are the upcoming steps:

• COLORSxSTUDIOS to spread a Typeform with COLORS’ global community (incl. the Instagram, Facebook, etc.) to gather input.

• People familiar with the local scenes and culture will start inputting data and tips with regards to this.

• As a community, we will be able to a) review and sort this info (anonymized), b) invite locals into our community, and c) find meaningful ways to interface with the COLORSxSTUDIOS curation and editorial teams.

• Our next call is next Wednesday (3pm CET -- for other timezones, please see the curatorial research channels). We will evaluate the opportunity, discuss alignment, and start imagining what gaps we can fill, what community-curated shows could look like, including revenue models.

We’ve had our first session with the COLORS curation team to discuss co-curation for COLORS Shows. This is for a specific upcoming regional series COLORSxSTUDIOS will be recording in South East Asia.

• The COLORS team talked about how they curate artists and music for shows.

• They detailed their workflow and their vision for where community contributions are most useful.

• We discussed how the community can contribute and what would be fun to do.

Next steps:

• Set up basic workflow for community curatorial efforts around this production cycle.

• Brainstorm potential revenue streams & opportunities for the community. Basically: in return for doing this, what do we want as a DAO?

This is an important opportunity to develop collaborative symbiosis and start making the community integral to the way COLORS operates. It also provides us with an opportunity to develop templates for how we distribute value across organizations.

Upcoming

We’re finishing up work on our season 1 announcement which will be followed by a town hall.

We find it especially pertinent to clearly outline the relation of COLORSxSTUDIOS, the DAO and the community, plus our thoughts around stewardship and progressive decentralization. Building a decentralized entity to represent the community of a non-web3 native centralized entity comes with unique challenges. The way we address these challenges may become a template for other communities that move to web3 rails in order to collectively capture the value they create.

We will detail these challenges in our season 1 announcement and are looking forward to creating sustainable frameworks for interdependence with all founding members and the COLORS team.

Shared experience is what binds community and shapes identity. Less than a year ago, we booted up the Discord (discord.gg/colorsxstudios) with a dozen or so people. It has grown into a thriving space with hundreds of people joining every month and over a thousand messages sent per week.

ICYMI, short for In Case You’ve Missed It, catches you up, so we can stay aligned and focused on what’s next.

We’ll be minting these updates as NFTs with a supply equal to the ICYMI edition number. For example, in week 2 there will be 2 NFTs available, in week 50 there will be 50. This week, there’s just 1.

Founding the DAO

On June 2, we launched our Founding Pass NFTs. These passes allow their collectors to become founding members of our DAO. If that term is unfamiliar to you, think of it as a community with a shared bank account. We envision the DAO to emerge as the governance layer for our community of communities. We are excited to welcome you on our progressive path to decentralization.

In total, a maximum of 1700 passes will exist. To date, around 300 passes have been minted for 0.25 ETH each. We have also airdropped around a dozen to core contributors in the community and we’ll shortly be setting up the COLORS team and COLORS Show alumni with their own passes.

Curatorial research

Our first grand alignment experiment between the COLORSxSTUDIOS team and COLORSxCOMMUNITY will be a curatorial research project which will hopefully lead to the community co-curating upcoming COLORS Shows. This will focus on a country in east Asia selected by the COLORS team. The project has 3 components:

• Excitement: expanding our knowledge and community through shared excitement around the artistic & music practices of our focus area.

• Refinement: categorising and highlighting aspects of our ongoing research. Think: virtual listening parties, playlists, editorial and interviews with local artists & tastemakers.

• Alignment: identifying best outcomes with the COLORS’ team for their curation flow, plus revenue opportunities. The alignment team will also create a proposal for contributor compensation (e.g. in the form of tokens, stablecoin, etc.).

Water & Music partnership

Water & Music is a research DAO focused on analyzing music and tech trends. They’ve released several longform reports on topics including music, Web3, and creative AI, and will be launching their Season 2 research this week focused on music’s role in the metaverse.

Their goal for Season 2 is to provide a clear, actionable roadmap for what truly innovative, digital-native music metaverse experiences could look like, with frameworks for artists and their teams to start experimenting with metaverse-related tools and platforms today.

Our intention is for the community to integrate with COLORS in all aspects: creatively, curatorially, editorially, and financially.

IN NUMBERS

During the 5 years since inception, COLORS has released over 600 shows, with 100 shows being released per year, gathering a global audience of millions and totalling a YouTube view count of over 2 billion.

Additionally COLORS produces IRL experiences with our most recent iteration happening this past year in Paris. The pop-up event took place over 15 days, featuring 35 COLORS alumni, exhibitions, art installations, performances, DJ Sets, workshops and masterclasses.

We have started to connect our community on Discord, bridging creative disciplines to build a community that can support, sustain, develop and amplify itself. Our budding community already counts hundreds of artists, producers, songwriters, designers, videographers, and curators from around the world.

SEASON 0

The community is currently in its pre-DAO phase during which we run various trials with early community members.

• Weekly Talks: every Wednesday we host a call to talk about what’s happening inside our community. We listen to music NFTs before the start of the hour and in the second half of the hour we are joined by an artist to talk about their creative journey. Artists who have joined us already include Adria Kain, Erick the Architect, Haleek Maul, Iman Europe, Jimmy Edgar, Lagoon Wavey, and LATASHÁ.

• Membership curation: while the majority of our Discord is open to all, the core community channels require an application to join the community. This is reviewed by the community’s application reviewers.

• Community gallery: at the top of our Discord we host our community gallery in which we showcase visual art by our community. At the time of writing, we are featuring the art of community member Leticia Ferraz.

• Editorial: the community collates notes from our weekly talks and turns them into brief bulletins. These bulletins align the community and helps us build bridges across our community to be inclusive of non-English speakers. Editorial pieces by COLORS also feature calls to participation, which allows us to explore how to create dynamic communities around the deep dives we do to bring social & political context to the art we feature.

• Local communities: we are connecting local communities, so that they can showcase their scenes and artists to the wider COLORS community around the globe.

• Music curation: we are developing tools & workflows to identify the best ways for the community to give meaningful input into the curation processes for COLORS shows.

COLLABORATIVE SYMBIOSIS

Our intention is to develop a collaborative symbiosis between the COLORS team and the community. Through shared identity, values, and purpose, we will collaborate deeply on topics ranging from editorial and curation to merch, digital collectibles, irl and url events, and show production.

Web3 provides the easiest way to be inclusive of our community while staying true to our values. All COLORS, no genres. To reflect our commitment to sustainable practices, we will find energy-efficient ways to achieve our goals, offsetting excess carbon related to our activities in the process.
