More and more people are investing and trading in cryptocurrencies, and businesses are also starting to accept them as a form of payment. However, with the rise of cryptocurrencies, there is also a need for proper accounting and bookkeeping, which is where crypto bookkeeping software come in.

In this article, we will discuss what crypto bookkeeping is, why it's important for small and medium scale businesses dealing with cryptocurrencies, and the basics of crypto bookkeeping, including tracking transactions, calculating gains and losses, and reporting to tax authorities.

What is Crypto Bookkeeping?

Crypto bookkeeping is the process of keeping track of financial transactions involving cryptocurrencies and smart contracts. For small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), crypto bookkeeping can be especially important as cryptocurrencies are becoming more widely accepted as a form of payment and investment.

Proper bookkeeping ensures that SMBs are aware of their financial status, including profits and losses, tax liabilities, and cash flow. This information is crucial for making informed business decisions, especially in the volatile world of cryptocurrencies. By keeping accurate records of all crypto transactions, SMBs can better manage their financial risks and ensure compliance with tax and regulatory requirements.

Moreover, designated crypto bookkeeping software can also help SMBs streamline their accounting processes. With the right tools and systems in place, businesses can automate the recording and reconciliation of crypto transactions, reducing the time and effort required for manual data entry. This, in turn, frees up time for SMBs to focus on other areas of their business, such as sales and customer service.

Why is Crypto Bookkeeping Important?

Crypto bookkeeping is essential for SMBs that transact in cryptocurrencies for several reasons:

Tax Compliance: One of the significant reasons SMBs must keep track of their cryptocurrency transactions is for tax compliance purposes. The tax authorities in most countries require individuals and businesses to report their crypto transactions and pay taxes on any gains made. Failure to comply with these requirements can lead to penalties, fines, or legal action. Therefore, maintaining accurate crypto bookkeeping records can help SMBs ensure that they meet their tax obligations.

Financial Reporting: SMBs must provide accurate and timely financial statements to stakeholders such as investors, lenders, and regulators. Accurate bookkeeping enables SMBs to generate comprehensive financial reports that show the company's financial health and performance over time. Investors and lenders can use this information to make informed investment decisions, while regulators can use it to ensure compliance with financial regulations.

Risk Management: Cryptocurrencies are known for their volatility and can experience significant price fluctuations within a short period. Therefore, it is essential for SMBs to manage their risk exposure when transacting in cryptocurrencies. Keeping accurate bookkeeping records can help SMBs monitor their crypto holdings, track their gains and losses, and identify potential risks in their portfolio.

Operational Efficiency: Crypto transactions can be complex and time-consuming, involving multiple wallets, exchanges, and blockchains. With proper bookkeeping practices and software in place, SMBs can streamline their accounting processes, automate data entry, and reconcile transactions more efficiently, reducing the time and effort required for manual accounting processes.

Basics of Crypto Bookkeeping

Tracking Transactions

The first step in crypto bookkeeping is to track all crypto activities. This includes purchases, sales, transfers, and any other transactions involving cryptocurrencies. It is important to record the date, amount, and value of each transaction, as well as any fees associated with the transaction.

Calculating Gains and Losses

Once all transactions have been recorded, the next step is to calculate gains and losses. This involves determining the cost basis of the cryptocurrencies at the time of purchase and the sale price at the time of the transaction. The difference between the two is the gain or loss.

For example, if you purchased 1 Bitcoin for $10,000 and sold it for $12,000, your gain would be $2,000.

Preparing crystal clear P/L reports

The final step in crypto bookkeeping is to report all gains and losses to tax authorities. It is important to note that gains from cryptocurrency transactions are subject to short-term or long-term capital gains tax rates, depending on how long the asset was held before the sale.

Common challenges faced by small and medium-sized businesses

Lack of knowledge: One of the main challenges faced by SMBs is a lack of knowledge about how to properly manage their cryptocurrency transactions. Many business owners may not even know where to begin with crypto bookkeeping, making it difficult for them to accurately report their gains and losses.

Complexity: Another challenge is that crypto bookkeeping is a complex process that requires a lot of time and attention to detail. Small and medium-sized businesses may not have the resources to devote to this task, especially if they are already overwhelmed with other responsibilities.

Security concerns: The security of cryptocurrency transactions is a major concern for SMBs. They may not have the necessary expertise or tools to keep their transactions secure, which could put their business at risk.

Tax regulations: Tax regulations surrounding cryptocurrency transactions are complex and constantly changing. SMBs may struggle to keep up with these changes and ensure that they are reporting their gains and losses accurately.

Lack of software: Finally, many SMBs may struggle to find suitable software that can meet their crypto bookkeeping needs. There are a variety of different crypto bookkeeping software options available, but not all of them may be suitable for every business.

Bookkeeping for SMBs: A five point checklist

Choose a reputable bookkeeping software that is designed to handle digital assets and cryptocurrencies, and make sure to ensure that it fetches transaction data directly from the blockchain. Fetching data directly from the blockchain ensures that the data is accurate and up-to-date. This is because the blockchain is a tamper-proof ledger that records all transactions in real-time. An example would be Consola.finance, which integrates with various APIs and nodes to directly import data from the blockchain without a single intermediary.

Set up a bookkeeping system to ensure accuracy and completeness of financial transactions. This involves creating a chart of accounts that categorizes all financial transactions. Your chart of accounts can be easily set up using consola.finance’s “Account Types” feature.

Assign roles and responsibilities to different members of your finance and accounts team to ensure that financial transactions are properly recorded and reconciled. This includes appointing a bookkeeper who is responsible for managing the company’s financial accounts. Consola.finance makes this possible through its “Collaboration” features that allows corporate accountants to effectively collaborate with their peers. The quick video below explains it all.

Create a transparent financial reporting system that makes all financial transactions publicly available on the blockchain. This includes maintaining detailed records of all financial transactions and providing regular financial reports to the DAO's members. Consola.finance’s “Export” feature makes report creation and sharing a breeze. Choose from multiple options such as counterparty transaction reports, P/L reports, transaction history reports and more.

Conduct periodic audits to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and identify any potential financial discrepancies. This involves hiring a reputable third-party auditor who can review the DAO's financial records and provide an independent assessment of its financial health. To make auditing a notch easier, consola.finance offers a comprehensive audit trail that accurately records every action taken by users. Even something as small as a change in wallet name is recorded.

Conclusion

In conclusion, crypto bookkeeping is essential for small and medium scale businesses that deal with cryptocurrencies. It involves tracking transactions, calculating gains and losses, and reporting to tax authorities to ensure compliance with regulations.

Although crypto bookkeeping can be complex, there are tools such as consola.finance available to help businesses manage their cryptocurrency transactions effectively.

To effectively manage crypto transactions, it is important for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to develop strategies for categorizing crypto activities. Proper categorization not only helps businesses keep track of their financial performance but also ensures compliance with relevant tax laws and regulations. However, without a clear categorization system, businesses can make common mistakes that can lead to errors in their financial statements and audits. In this blog post, we’ll discuss best practices for categorizing crypto transactions for SMBs, including consistent naming conventions, subcategorization, regular account reconciliation, accurate categorization, and consultation with tax professionals. By following these practices, crypto SMBs can ensure that their records are accurate, compliant, and up-to-date, allowing them to make informed business decisions and achieve long-term success.

Setting up your chart of accounts for crypto bookkeeping and accounting

A chart of accounts is a list of all the accounts that you use to record transactions in your crypto accounting software. It is essential to have a well-organized chart of accounts to ensure that your financial data is accurate and easy to understand.

When setting up your chart of accounts for crypto bookkeeping, you should consider the specific needs of your business or portfolio. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

Create separate accounts for each type of cryptocurrency: You should create a separate account for each type of cryptocurrency that you hold. This will make it easier to track your transactions and calculate your gains and losses.

Create separate accounts for each type of transaction: You should also create separate accounts for each type of transaction, such as buying, selling, mining, staking, and earning interest. This will help you to better understand your financial data and make more informed decisions.

Use clear and descriptive account names: When naming your accounts, use clear and descriptive names that reflect the specific type of transaction or cryptocurrency. This will make it easier to understand your financial data and avoid confusion.

Consider using sub-accounts: If you have a large number of transactions to track, you may want to consider using sub-accounts to further categorize your data. For example, you could create a sub-account for each exchange or wallet that you use.

Regularly review and update your chart of accounts: Your chart of accounts should be periodically reviewed and updated to ensure that it reflects the current state of your business or portfolio. This will help to ensure that your financial data is accurate and up-to-date.

Ground rules for categorization

Use consistent naming conventions: When categorizing transactions, it’s important to use consistent naming conventions. This can help you avoid confusion and ensure that your records are accurate. For example, if you use abbreviations, be sure to use them consistently across all transactions.

Consider using subcategories: Depending on the complexity of your business, it may be helpful to use subcategories to further classify your transactions. For example, you may want to break down your expenses into subcategories such as office supplies, rent, and utilities.

Automate where possible: Many crypto bookkeeping software platforms offer automation features that can help streamline the categorization process. For example, consola.finance allows you to set up rules that automatically categorize transactions based on multiple criteria.

Reconcile your accounts regularly: To ensure that your records are accurate, it’s important to reconcile your accounts regularly. This involves comparing your bookkeeping records to your actual account balances to identify any discrepancies.

Keep track of your tax obligations: Depending on your location and the nature of your business, you may be required to pay taxes on your crypto transactions. It’s important to keep track of your tax obligations and ensure that your categorization is compliant with relevant tax laws.

Examples for effective categorization

Sales: If your business sells goods or services for cryptocurrency, you would categorize those transactions as “Sales” or “Revenue.” You might also want to create subcategories for different types of sales, such as “Product Sales” and “Service Sales.”

Purchases: If your business buys goods or services using cryptocurrency, you would categorize those transactions as “Purchases” or “Expenses.” You might also want to create subcategories for different types of expenses, such as “Office Supplies” and “Marketing Expenses.”

Investments: If your business invests in cryptocurrencies, you would categorize those transactions as “Investments.” You might also want to create subcategories for different types of investments, such as “Long-Term Investments” and “Short-Term Investments.”

Transfers: If your business moves cryptocurrency between accounts or wallets, you would categorize those transactions as “Transfers.” You might also want to create subcategories for different types of transfers, such as “Wallet-to-Wallet Transfers” and “Exchange-to-Wallet Transfers.”

Fees: If your business pays fees for transactions or other services related to cryptocurrency, you would categorize those transactions as “Fees” or “Expenses.” You might also want to create subcategories for different types of fees, such as “Transaction Fees” and “Exchange Fees.”

Handling special events

Special events such as forks, airdrops, and other distributions can be challenging to account for in crypto bookkeeping. Here are some tips on how to properly handle these transactions:

Forks: A fork occurs when a cryptocurrency splits into two separate chains, resulting in the creation of a new cryptocurrency. When a fork occurs, you will need to determine the fair market value of the new cryptocurrency at the time of the fork. This value should be recorded as income on your books, and you should create a new account to track the new cryptocurrency.

Airdrops: An airdrop is when you receive free tokens or cryptocurrencies as a promotional or marketing effort. When you receive an airdrop, you will need to determine the fair market value of the tokens or cryptocurrencies at the time of receipt. This value should be recorded as income on your books, and you should create a new account to track the new assets.

Other distributions: Other types of distributions, such as dividends or interest payments, should also be recorded as income on your books. You should create a new account to track these distributions, and record the fair market value of the assets at the time of receipt.

Record-keeping: It’s important to keep accurate records of all special events, including the date of the event, the type of event, the fair market value of the assets received, and any fees or costs associated with the event.

Tax implications: Special events can have tax implications, so it’s important to consult with a tax professional to ensure that you are properly accounting for these transactions on your tax returns.

Stay up-to-date with regulations: Regulations around special events in crypto can change rapidly, so it’s important to stay up-to-date on any new guidance or regulations from regulatory bodies.

Use software that can handle special events: Choose bookkeeping software that can handle special events such as forks and airdrops, and that allows for easy customization of the chart of accounts to accommodate these transactions. Consola.finance imports transactions directly from the blockchain and thus imports all wallet activity with unmatched accuracy.

In conclusion, effective categorization of crypto transactions is essential for SMBs in the crypto space. By developing a clear categorization system and following best practices such as consistent naming conventions, subcategorization, regular account reconciliation , accurate categorization, and consultation with tax professionals, businesses can keep accurate records, ensure compliance with relevant tax laws and regulations, and make informed business decisions. While the tax laws and regulations related to cryptocurrencies are complex and constantly evolving, staying informed and seeking professional guidance can help businesses navigate this rapidly changing landscape. By implementing these best practices, SMBs can increase their chances of long-term success and achieve their financial goals.

As the use of cryptocurrency gains more momentum, it is crucial for businesses capitalizing on the potential of blockchain applications to diligently monitor and account for their activity. This necessitates conducting an audit of your crypto accounting records. An audit entails a thorough examination of your financial documentation to confirm its accuracy and adherence to applicable laws and regulations. In this article, we will delve into the factors that provoke audits, outline the steps to effectively prepare for an audit, and discuss proven best practices to ensure a smooth process.

Understanding Audit Triggers

In this chapter, we will explore the various factors that can prompt an audit, enabling you to proactively address potential audit triggers and mitigate any associated risks.

Due diligence by third parties: Prospective investors, financial institutions, or other interested parties may request an audit to conduct thorough business assessments. They may seek to evaluate your company's financial stability, risk profile, or overall dependability before engaging in any collaboration or transaction.

Assessment of internal processes: Companies may conduct internal audits to gauge the effectiveness of their internal control mechanisms, risk management approaches, and governance procedures. These audits can help uncover potential weak points, correct mistakes, and refine operations for improved efficiency and regulatory compliance.

Disputed calculations by authorities: If tax agencies identify potential errors or inconsistencies in your reported crypto transactions, they may scrutinize your records more closely, potentially leading to an audit.

Preparing for an Audit

In the next chapter will guide you through the essential steps to successfully prepare for an audit, ensuring your organization is well-equipped to handle the process with confidence and efficiency.

Understand the purpose of the audit

The first step while preparing for an audit is to understand its purpose. An audit is conducted to ensure that your financial records are accurate and compliant with relevant laws and regulations. It is important to know what the auditor is looking for and what records they will be reviewing. This will help you to prepare the necessary documentation and be ready to answer any questions the auditor may have.

Gather all relevant documentation

The next step is to gather all relevant documentation. This includes all transactions related to your cryptocurrency activities, such as purchase and sale records, balance statements, and any other financial records that may be relevant. It is important to have a clear and organized record of all transactions to make it easier for the auditor to review.

Use a reliable accounting software

In order to make the audit process as smooth as possible, it is recommended that you use a reliable crypto bookkeeping and accounting software, such as consola.finance. This software can help you track your transactions and generate structured reports that the auditor can review. Manually tracking data can be risky, as it may lead to the omission of crucial information and calculation errors in fiat valuations or cost basis tracking. By using an accounting software, you can ensure that all your records are accurate and in compliance with the relevant laws and regulations.

Understand the effects of tax on your cryptocurrency transactions

It is important to fully understand the tax implications of your cryptocurrency transactions. Different countries have different tax laws regarding cryptocurrency, and it is important to know how your transactions will be taxed. This information will be useful for the auditor, who will be reviewing your tax returns.

Leveraging Best Practices

In the final chapter, we will discuss the top best practices for managing audits, providing practical insights and recommendations to help you streamline your approach and achieve optimal results.

In order to optimize efficiency and minimize expenses throughout the audit process, it is crucial to grasp the optimal strategies for cryptocurrency auditing. By adhering to these established guidelines, organizations can ascertain that their financial documentation is precise and compliant with the pertinent laws and regulations, ensuring seamless operations in the realm of digital assets.

Keep detailed records of all transactions

The first and most important best practice for crypto accounting and auditing is to keep detailed records of all transactions. This includes information such as the timestamp, the amount, the price from a reliable source, the type and the cost basis of cryptocurrency involved. It is also important to keep records of any exchange or wallet where the transaction took place. This information will be crucial for the auditor in determining the accuracy of your financial records.

Use a consistent method for valuing cryptocurrency

Another important best practice is to use a consistent method for valuing cryptocurrency. This will ensure that all transactions are recorded at the correct value. The most common method is to value the cryptocurrency at the fair market value at the time of the transaction. Maintaining thorough records of the fair market value's origin and the cost basis for each asset and transaction is of utmost importance to ensure accuracy and compliance.

Stay informed about relevant laws and regulations

With the constant changes and developments in the world of cryptocurrency, it is important to stay informed about relevant laws and regulations. This includes knowing how your transactions will be taxed and ensuring that you are in compliance with anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) laws.

Engage an independent auditor

Finally, engaging an independent auditor with expertise in cryptocurrency is crucial to ensure that your financial records are accurate and in compliance with relevant laws and regulations. An independent auditor can provide valuable insight and recommendations for addressing any issues that may be identified during the audit process. By hiring a professional, you can ensure that the audit process is done correctly and that your finances are in compliance.

In conclusion, an audit of your crypto accounting records is an important step to ensure that your financial books are accurate and in compliance with relevant laws and regulations. By understanding the purpose of the audit, gathering all relevant documentation, using a reliable accounting software, understanding the tax implications, and hiring a professional auditor, you can prepare for an audit and ensure that it goes as smoothly as possible. As always, it's important to stay informed and stay compliant with regulations and laws surrounding the specific countries and jurisdictions you operate in.

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) have captured an important part of the digital world, with their unique ability to represent ownership of a digital asset. As NFTs continue to gain popularity, it's important for individuals and businesses to understand how to properly account for them.

First, it is necessary to know the difference between NFTs and other digital assets. NFTs are unique, irreplaceable digital assets, such as digital art or collectibles, that cannot be replaced or exchanged for an identical item. Fungible tokens, on the other hand, such as cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, are interchangeable.

When it comes to NFT accounting, there are a few key points to take note of. Currently, there are no specific accounting standards for NFTs and since NFTs are unique, digital intangible assets, they have an indefinite life and this leads to them being compared to trademarks. Usually, NFTs are recorded as intangible assets in a balance sheet, but this might change sometimes depending on NFT utility. Another key consideration is how to value NFTs. Because NFTs are unique, their value can be difficult to determine. One method that is commonly used is to base the value on the price at which the NFT was last sold. It's also important to take note that the value of an NFT can fluctuate over time, so it's important to regularly re-evaluate the value and make any necessary adjustments to the balance sheet.

When it comes to taxes, NFTs are treated like any other capital asset, such as stocks or real estate. This means that any profits from the sale of an NFT are subject to capital gains tax.

Here are the potential situations when your NFTs are liable for taxes:

Purchasing NFTs using cryptocurrency: Taxation occurs if the cryptocurrency used for purchase gains in value before the purchase of NFTs. For example, if you hold $1000 of ETH and the price increases to $1500, the purchase and corresponding sale of ETH incurs capital gain taxes.

Selling NFTs: If you sell NFTs for a price higher or lower than the purchase price, it can result in capital gains/losses.

Appreciation in NFT value: If your NFT appreciates in value over time, and you trade it for another NFT, it results in capital gains taxes.

If you’re a NFT creator, any money made through primary or secondary sales are categorized as income, and your earnings are subject to income tax.

It is important for individuals and businesses to keep accurate records of all transactions involving NFTs in order to properly report any gains or losses on taxes.

Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) have gained a lot of popularity in recent years, and there are several different types of NFTs available on the market. Two of the most popular types of NFTs are ERC-721 and ERC-1155.

When it comes to accounting for ERC-721 and ERC-1155 NFTs, it's important to understand the specific characteristics of each type of token and how they differ from each other. For example, ERC-721 tokens are unique assets and their value can be determined based on the last sale price, while ERC-1155 tokens are bundle of assets, and their value can be determined based on the value of all the assets bundled together.

It's also important to keep track of the transaction history of ERC-721 and ERC-1155 NFTs, as the value of these tokens can fluctuate over time. Keeping accurate records of all transactions, such as the purchase and sale of these tokens, will be crucial for determining their value and reporting any gains or losses on taxes.

Important pointers to keep in mind while accounting for NFTs

It's important to note that NFTs are not physical assets and their ownership is recorded on the blockchain, a distributed ledger technology. This means that the ownership records are transparent, tamper-proof and accessible to everyone. This will have an impact on how the ownership is recorded in the books of accounts.

NFTs are stored on a digital wallet, and it's important to keep track of all transactions involving NFTs, including the purchase, sale, and transfer of ownership. This will enable businesses to keep accurate records of their NFT holdings and transactions, which will be crucial for determining their value and reporting any gains or losses on taxes.

In addition to the standard accounting and tax considerations, businesses that deal with NFTs need to consider legal and regulatory compliance. For example, businesses may need to comply with anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) regulations, depending on the jurisdiction they operate in.

With NFTs becoming increasingly popular, businesses are experimenting with accepting them as a form of payment and will need to have a system in place to accept and process these forms of payments. These players will also need to account for any changes in value of the NFTs between the time of payment and the time of sale.

Benefits of using a dedicated accounting software to account for NFTs

Using a crypto accounting software like consola.finance to account for NFTs has several benefits. One of the main benefits is the ability to automate the tracking and reporting of NFT transactions. This can save time and reduce the risk of errors that can occur with manual tracking. Additionally, a crypto accounting software can provide greater transparency and accuracy in reporting NFT transactions, which can be useful for compliance with tax and regulatory requirements. The software can also provide real-time reporting and analytics, allowing users to quickly and easily track their NFT holdings and performance.

Overall, accounting for NFTs can be a bit tricky due to their unique nature. However, by properly classifying them as intangible assets, determining their value, and keeping accurate records of transactions, individuals and businesses can ensure that they are properly accounting for NFTs. It is also important to seek advice from a professional accountant or tax advisor with experience in NFTs to ensure compliance with all applicable tax laws.

Cryptocurrency and blockchain technology are starting to play a significant role in the future of finance, and as the adoption of these technologies continues to grow, the need for reliable and accurate crypto accounting tools will become increasingly important. A dedicated crypto accounting software is specifically designed to track and record cryptocurrency transactions and holdings, making it easier for businesses to manage their financial affairs in the cryptocurrency industry. In this blog, we will discuss the advantages of using a dedicated crypto accounting software, the role that crypto accounting is likely to play in the future of finance, and provide tips on selecting a software that suits a company's needs.

Using a dedicated crypto accounting software can provide a range of benefits for businesses. First and foremost, it helps to accurately track and record transactions and holdings, which can be especially important for businesses that deal with large volumes of cryptocurrency. This can make it easier to manage financial affairs in the cryptocurrency industry and ensure that accounting is accurate and transparent.

In addition, a dedicated crypto accounting software allows businesses to easily generate reports and analysis on their financial performance. This can be useful for businesses that need to provide regular financial updates to stakeholders or investors. It can also help businesses to better understand their financial position and make informed decisions about their cryptocurrency holdings and transactions.

As the use of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology continues to grow and evolve, the role of crypto accounting in the future of finance is likely to become increasingly important. Accurate and transparent accounting practices will be crucial in building trust and confidence in the industry, which will be essential for its long-term growth and success. The use of blockchain technology in the accounting industry also has the potential to revolutionize traditional accounting practices. For example, by using smart contracts, it may be possible to automate many accounting tasks, reducing the risk of errors and improving efficiency.

When it comes to selecting a crypto accounting software, here are some few key factors to consider:

Assess your business needs: Before you start looking at different tools, take some time to evaluate your accounting needs as a company. Do you need a tool that can handle multiple cryptocurrencies, or just one? Do you require advanced reporting features, or just a simple way to track your transactions? By identifying your needs, you can narrow down your options and find a tool that meets the specific requirements of your business.

Research various options: There are many crypto accounting tools on the market, so it's worth taking some time to research and compare different options. Watch out for reviews and ratings from other users, and consider the features and pricing of each tool.

Consider integration with exchanges: If your business frequently trades cryptocurrencies on exchanges, it can be helpful to choose a tool that integrates with those exchanges. This allows you to easily import your trade history and keep your accounting up to date.

Look for security features: As you'll be storing sensitive financial information in your crypto accounting tool, it's crucial to choose one that has strong security measures in place. Look for tools that offer encrypted storage and two-factor authentication to protect your data.

Test the tool: Once you've narrowed down your options, it's a good idea to test out a few different tools to see which one works best for your business. Many crypto accounting tools offer free trial periods, so you can try them out before committing to a purchase.

Scalability: Consider whether the software can scale as your business grows, or if it is a better fit for a specific stage in your business.

User-friendly interface: A software that is easy to navigate, with a clear and user-friendly interface can save you a lot of time and hassle in the long run. Especially for people who are beginners to accounting.

Technical support: Make sure the software provides a comprehensive technical support system that can help you troubleshoot any issues you may encounter. Consider the hours of support, and whether there are different levels of support.

Cost: Evaluate the costs of the software and decide if they are feasible and justified in relation to your business needs. Some software could have a free version with some limited features and then charge for advanced features.

Integration with other software: If you're already using other accounting or financial software, it's worth looking into whether the crypto accounting software you're considering can integrate with these tools. This can save you time and effort by eliminating the need to manually transfer data between different programs.

By considering these factors when selecting a crypto accounting software, you can ensure that you choose a tool that meets your specific business needs, offers the features you require, and is easy to use and secure. It's also important to ensure that the software is compliant with all the regulations regarding crypto accounting in your jurisdiction, and consider consulting with a professional to help you in your selection.

Cost basis is a term used in accounting and finance to refer to the original value of an asset. This value is used to determine the capital gain or loss on the asset when it is sold or disposed of. In other words, the cost basis is the starting point for calculating the profit or loss on an investment.

One of the challenges of tracking cost basis in DeFi is that these decentralized networks do not have central authorities or recordkeepers to track and record financial transactions. In traditional finance, cost basis is typically tracked by financial institutions, such as brokerage firms, which maintain records of the purchase and sale of assets. In DeFi, however, users must track their own transactions and maintain their own records.

DeFi transactions often involve complex financial instruments, such as derivatives and tokens representing various assets, which can make it difficult to accurately determine the cost basis of a particular asset. Additionally, DeFi transactions may involve multiple parties and may be conducted on multiple decentralized networks, which can further complicate the process of tracking cost basis.

There are several methods for calculating the cost basis of an asset, including the First-In-First-Out (FIFO) method, the Last-In-Last-Out (LIFO) method, the average cost method and the Specific Identification Method.

First-In-First-Out Method (FIFO)

The FIFO method is a way of calculating the cost basis of an asset that assumes that the first units of an asset acquired are the first units sold. This means that the cost of the units sold is based on the price at which the units were originally purchased, rather than the price at which they are sold.

To understand how the FIFO method works, consider the following example:

Suppose you own 100 tokens of XYZ and you have made the following purchases:

Purchase 1: 50 tokens at $50 per token

Purchase 2: 25 tokens at $55 per token

Purchase 3: 25 tokens at $60 per token

If you sell 50 tokens of XYZ, the FIFO method would assume that the first 50 tokens sold are the 50 tokens that you originally purchased at $50 per token (Purchase 1). Therefore, the cost basis for these 50 tokens would be $50 per token. If you would decide to sell the remaining 50 tokens later, the cost basis for the remaining 50 tokens would be the average cost of $55 per token for 25 tokens (Purchase 2) and $60 per token for 25 tokens (Purchase 3), which is $57.50 per token.

Last-In-First-Out Method (LIFO)

The last-in, first-out (LIFO) method is a way of calculating the cost basis of an asset that assumes that the last units of an asset acquired are the first units sold. This means that the cost of the units sold is based on the price at which the units were most recently purchased, rather than the price at which they are sold.

To understand how the LIFO method works, consider the following example:

Suppose you own 100 tokens of XYZ and you have made the following purchases:

Purchase 1: 50 tokens at $50 per token

Purchase 2: 25 tokens at $55 per token

Purchase 3: 25 tokens at $60 per token

If you sell 50 tokens of XYZ, the LIFO method would assume that the first 50 tokens sold are the 25 tokens that you most recently purchased at $60 per token (Purchase 3) and the 25 tokens that you purchased at $55 per token (Purchase 2). Therefore, the cost basis would be the average cost of $60 for 25 tokens and $55 per token for 25 tokens, which is $57.50 per token. The cost basis of the remaining 50 tokens is $50 per token (Purchase 1).

Average Cost Method

The average cost method is a way of calculating the cost basis of an asset that takes into account all units of the asset that have been acquired and calculates the cost basis based on the average cost of all units.

To understand how the average cost method works, consider the following example:

Suppose you own 100 tokens of XYZ and you have made the following purchases:

Purchase 1: 50 tokens at $50 per token

Purchase 2: 25 tokens at $55 per token

Purchase 3: 25 tokens at $60 per token

The average cost method uses the weighted average price for all historic purchases, which is $53.75 per token.

Specific Identification Method

The specific identification method is a way of calculating the cost basis of an asset that allows the investor to specify which units of the asset are being sold. This means that the investor can choose which units to sell based on the cost basis of each unit, rather than using a default method such as the FIFO or LIFO method.

How consola.finance can help

Consola.finance is an crypto accounting, bookkeeping and reporting platform that aims to solve the challenges of tracking cost basis in decentralized finance.

The global web3 market is projected to reach over $33 billion by 2030, with this rapid growth attracting the attention of investors and regulators alike. As the web3 market continues to expand, businesses operating in this space will need to ensure they are managing their finances effectively. However, the process of bookkeeping and accounting can be a significant hurdle for many web3 businesses, particularly when it comes to generating DAO reports. Despite their importance for long-term success, generating DAO reports is notoriously inefficient for web3 businesses.

What is DAO Reporting?

DAO reporting refers to the practice of decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) announcing their earnings, operating metrics, and other relevant financial information to internal and external stakeholders. This practice helps to maintain transparency and trust within the DeFi space. DAO reports provide stakeholders with key financial information about a DAO, including details about how funds are allocated, operating metrics, and the composition of the DAO's treasury profile. This information is crucial for ensuring that decision makers have a clear understanding of a DAO's financial situation and for maintaining trust with users and regulators.

Typically, a DAO report will contain key financial details, although the exact format and content of these reports may vary across different platforms. Many DAOs will generate a report so that contributors, users, and investors can gain insight into the company's financial situation. In most cases, a DAO report will include the following financial information:

Allocation of funds: This section of a DAO report outlines how resources are being distributed within the DAO, including details about how funds are being spent and the amount being spent. This information is important for understanding the priorities of the DAO and where funds are being allocated, such as token buybacks or specific spending purposes.

Operating metrics: The Operating metrics provide information about how resources are being used to run the DAO, including details about the sustainability of the DAO's internal operations and potential areas for cost-cutting. Operating metrics are crucial for ensuring that key decision makers have a clear understanding of the DAO's financial health.

Treasury profile composition: This section of a report outlines the assets held by the DAO, including the quantity of each holding. This information is important for investors, as it allows them to understand the level of risk they are being exposed to. For example, a lack of stablecoin holdings may be a red flag for future investors.

Asset in-flows: This section is the equivalent of income for a traditional company, outlining how much money is being earned by the DAO. DAOs typically earn money through protocol fees, membership purchases, and yield farming rewards. The way this information is presented in a DAO report may vary between companies, but it is crucial for understanding the long-term sustainability of the DAO.

Asset out-flows: An Asset out-flow overview is the equivalent of expenses for a traditional company, outlining the costs associated with running the DAO. Expenses for a DAO may include worker salaries, profit securities, grants, and security audits. As with asset in-flows, this information is important for understanding the long-term sustainability of the DAO.

Strategic token swaps: Strategic token swaps indicate any partnerships between two different DAOs, represented by tokens. These tokens are essential because they grant voting rights in the DAO's governance process.

Including the aforementioned information in a DAO report helps to build trust with users and maintain transparency with regulators. Following a regular reporting process is also extremely beneficial for the internal operations of a DAO, as it allows key decision makers to make informed decisions based on a clear understanding of the DAO's financial situation.

How DAO Reporting Currently Works and how consola.finance helps

Currently, the process of generating a DAO report is time-consuming and inefficient, as it involves manually putting together a report in Excel or Google Sheets. This is due to the decentralized nature of cryptocurrencies, which do not have a central hub for tracking and managing funds. However, with the development of specialized platforms, the process of generating DAO reports is becoming more streamlined and efficient. Consola.finance is designed to automate the process of generating DAO reports. By using consola.finance, DAOs can easily generate reports that provide a clear and comprehensive overview of their financial situation. This can help DAOs save time, reduce human error, and make better decisions about their finances.

Recent developments in the crypto industry have thrown the issue of counterparty risk into sharp relief. High-profile failures and severe stress is faced by large, centralized organizations. With Celsius, BlockFi, Voyager Digital and FTX, the number of bankrupt centralized institutions in crypto keeps growing. Due to lost trust in centralized organizations, the adoption of self-custody solutions is skyrocketing. Safe, Ledger, Trezor and other self-custody solutions are growing tremendously and witness new records of deposits. Some centralized organizations take the required steps to prove their on-chain cryptocurrency balances to third parties. When doing so, in-house solutions or third-party verifiers are often chosen to create the proof. These approaches are difficult to verify for external parties, as they usually require a certain level of specialized technical knowledge. Proof of on-chain reserves is required for greater transparency. In this article, we'll explore how proof of on-chain reserve (PoR) is defined and why it is one of the most powerful means of building trust.

How is proof of reserve defined? Proof of reserves is the idea that centralized entities holding digital assets for its customers create publicly available proofs of their reserves and match them against proofs of user balances. Cryptographic procedures are used to verify those user balances. The idea is to show evidence to the public that the cryptocurrency deposited and claimed to be still in existence, actually matches the total user's balance. It is a method used by an organization to demonstrate to another party that it has sufficient financial reserves through a form of documented evidence of its on-chain holdings. Broadly speaking, a Proof of Reserves is a form of trust that an organization provides towards specific customers, the broader market, a current or prospective partner or a regulator. However, only sharing wallet addresses alone is not sufficient. The liability side needs also to be disclosed in a format that is comprehensible and verifiable for third parties.

Why companies should provide Proof of Reserves

Auditability Through self-regulatory measures it is easier for external parties to perform audits. This avoids strict external regulation and leaves more space for innovation. If exchanges collectively adopted PoR, regulators might be more inclined to adopt a light touch approach. Much better to operate in relative freedom with voluntary self-regulatory measures rather than suffering onerous regulatory impositions later on.

Fraud Prevention Proof of Reserve measures reveal dishonest actors in the market considerably more quickly. By making fractional reserves nearly impossible to conceal, it improves protection against harmful operators. Failures harm the entire sector, therefore avoiding them is in everyone's best interest. Additionally, good players have no disadvantages at all when implementing Proof of Reserve initiatives.

Trust PoR increases consumer confidence. The increased transparency can facilitate to restore public confidence in cryptocurrencies and blockchain projects. A periodic PoR attestation shows end users that companies are diligent about solvency and that the financial situation is in order.

Adoption It makes it possible for centralized and decentralized financial applications to coexist in harmony. Despite the fact that blockchain and cryptocurrency environments are fully decentralized in an ideal world, centralized institutions have established their legal right to exist. Since DeFi is still not entirely intuitive to use, custodians, lenders, and exchanges will continue to be useful and necessary. A self-regulatory framework with centralized and decentralized players can promote widespread use of cryptocurrencies.

Recent market turmoil has been exacerbated by a lack of transparency and associated counterparty mistrust across digital asset custodians and market participants. Increased transparency will provide more information on counterparty risk, potentially mitigating the chance of systemic default contagion and improving user trust in their custodial relationships. Due to the encrypted and anonymous nature of most blockchains, even transparency of a companies’ on-chain activity is not existent. Crypto bookkeeping and accounting is complex and confounding. Proper crypto bookkeeping and reporting lies the baseline for any proof of reserve analysis. Companies should not rely on manual bookkeeping processes but rely on automated solutions.

Web3 is a decentralized web infrastructure that enables users to interact directly with each other, without the need for intermediaries. This is a revolution in the internet world, where businesses and individuals obtain data access and management rights in a serverless internet architecture free from the dominion of internet giants.

In this blog post, we will explore some of the most interesting use cases of web3 in the real world!

web3 is the most advanced stage of the internet

When the internet was conceived several decades ago, the vision of a truly democratized marketplace of opinions seemed finally within reach. However, due to technical and economical limitations, the first iterations of the web did not fully live up to this goal. Web1 was characterized by static HTML-based websites, and web2, the lifespan of the web that we live in right now, saw the rise of platforms owned and controlled by internet giants such as Google, Facebook or Amazon.

Web3 is the third iteration of the web and the first that enables users to interact directly with each other without being controlled by a single entity or platform. As a result, web3 provides a secure and transparent way of taking back control over the flow of information, data and transactions.

There are many applications of web3, ranging from distributed ledger technology and decentralized finance to non-fungible tokens and metaverses.

In this section, we will explore some of the most interesting use cases of web3 in the real world!

Distributed Ledger Technologies make transactions more efficient

One of the most important applications of web3 are Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT). DLT is a type of database that is distributed across a network of computers allowing for faster and more secure data sharing between parties. One type of DLT is the blockchain, a secure link between data points where the hashed information stored on each block is verified by the interjoining blocks.

Individuals and businesses can use Distributed Ledger Technologies in a number of ways:

Conducting transactions: Distributed Ledger Technologies allow fast and secure payments between two parties without paying fees to a bank.

Smart Contracts: Like a written contract, digital smart contracts are used to record agreements between two or more parties, but in a decentralized, transparent and autonomous matter. As no intermediaries are required to setup smart contracts, they can help to streamline complex business relationships by automating tasks and eliminating the need for manual paperwork. As such, they become increasingly popular in a number of business relations, including e.g. real estate: Here, smart contracts can be used to automate the transfer of property ownership, the payment of taxes and fees, and the execution of other contractual obligations.

DApps: Decentralized Applications function like traditional apps, but no single entity is in control of the data. Instead, the infrastructure of a DApp runs on a blockchain and is accessible by every user of the app. This can be used for financial transactions, identity management or supply chain tracking.

Decentralized Finance is faster and cheaper than banks

Decentralized finance (DeFi) describes financial applications that run on top of a blockchain. The advantage of using DeFi applications is that they are typically much cheaper and faster than traditional financial services, allowing businesses to send funds directly to other parties without the need to involve intermediaries.

These applications are commonly used in DeFI:

Yield farming: Yield farming protocols are a type of investment where users earn interest on their cryptocurrency holdings. This typically require users to “stake” their crypto assets in order to participate, meaning that they provide liquidity to a trading platform in order to earn rewards.

Peer-to-peer relationships: By its very nature, DeFi strengthens peer-to-peer relationships by using decentralized protocols and smart contracts to facilitate direct, trustless interactions between parties, or peers. These interactions can be anything from lending and borrowing assets to token swaps and derivatives trading without having to go through centralized intermediaries.

Digital Marketplaces: In a web3 setting, marketplaces can be used to buy and sell a wide variety of assets, including cryptocurrencies, tokens, and even software products. Decentralized and transparent, these marketplaces process transactions directly between buyers and sellers. In 2022, one of the most popular marketplaces is Compound, a platform that allows users to supply crypto assets as collateral and earn interest on their holdings.

NFT makes digital ownership possible

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are digital assets that are stored on the blockchain and can represent anything from artwork to in-game items and real-world assets. One of the most popular platforms for NFTs is Ethereum, which hosts a variety of different marketplaces and protocols for buying, selling, and transferring NFTs. Among these protocols is ERC-721, one of the most commonly used NFT-protocols to create unique tokens.

As NFTs are forgery-proof by nature, they allow for a number of use cases in web economics:

NFTs in digital art: NFT provides a new way for artists and creators to sell their work in a completely decentralized manner. These transactions are typically conducted via NFT marketplaces such as OpenSea and Rarible.

Video Gaming: NFT can also be used in video games as a way to trade in-game items. This is possible because each NFT represents a unique item that can be traded on a decentralized exchange.

Supply Chain Management: Due to their ability to track data, NFTs can also be used to reduce costs and bottlenecks in the tracking of supply chains. This is done by storing data related to the production, shipping, and ownership of goods as an NFT on the blockchain. As each NFT is assigned a unique ID, everyone is able to pinpoint the location of each product as it moves through the supply chain.

DAOs empower organizations

A DAO is a decentralized autonomous organization that runs on smart contracts, meaning that it does not require a central authority to manage or oversee it. Instead, they are governed by their members who vote on proposals using tokens which are used to represent their stake in the organization. As DAOs are run fully digital, DAO contributors can operate fully remote, thus revolutionizing corporate governance and cooperation.

These web3 use cases are most common with DAOs. We have also written about the different types of DAOs and their common challenges here.

Crowdfunding: When a project needs investments, DAOs can ask investors to contribute money. In return, investors receive DAO tokens that allow them to participate in further activities of the DAO. This truly democratizes the decision-making process as all decisions are made by the investors and not a central authority.

Next-gen governance: By bringing decision-making power to all members, a DAO does not require a central body of authority. This eliminates the danger of making decisions that only benefit personal interests as opposed to the shared interests of the collective.

The Metaverse changes user interactions in online worlds

The Metaverse is a decentralized virtual world that runs on the blockchain. In the Metaverse, users can create their own digital assets, including avatars, and interact with each other in a completely trustless manner. This opens new possibilities for E-Commerce business that can use the metaverse to provide their goods and services.

This is how the Metaverse revolutionizes the web:

Immersive virtual experience: In contrast to a text- and image-based form of communication to a community, the Metaverse takes user interaction to the next level. This means that businesses can represent themselves in more creative ways while keeping full control over the data and all transactions that take place in the Metaverse.

VR and AR spaces: VR and AR are prime examples how the metaverse changes user interactions. For example, businesses are using VR to create virtual showrooms or product demonstrations. Augmented Reality can also be used by developers to create interactive 3D maps that users can explore in the metaverse.

Digital self-representation: Within the metaverse, users can build an avatar that encapsulates their persona on a digital screen. This allows users to explore virtual worlds in a completely immersive way, either with a combination of a mouse and a keyboard, virtual reality headsets are through mobile apps.

GameFI revolutionized the gaming industry

GameFI is a web3-based gaming platform and financing hub that utilizes the blockchain to power its features. GameFI allows gamers to connect with each other and play games in a completely decentralized environment. The platform has its own in-game currency, which can be used to purchase items and services within the game world.

Due to its decentralized nature, GameFI offers several possibilities for advanced gaming:

Game Launchpads: Launchpads are essentially blockchain-based platforms that enable developers to launch their games on a decentralized network. This allows smart contract-based gameplay could open new possibilities for in-game currencies, item trading, and more.

Play-to-earn (P2E): This gaming model allows users to earn rewards for their participation in a given activity, usually through some form of game or challenge. In a web3 environment, this allows gamers to directly monetize their participation in a gaming activity and helps developers to create more engaging and immersive gaming experiences.

In-game marketplaces with NFT: NFT marketplaces are becoming increasingly popular in the gaming world as they allow gamers to trade virtual assets and items with each other. As opposed to popular marketplaces such as Opensea, Enjin and Mintable, in-game NFT marketplaces keep all transactions within the game, which further strengthens user engagement.

Why accounting matters in a web3 environment

We have learned that web3 provides businesses with new possibilities to build peer-to-peer relationships on decentralized platforms. Naturally, these can be used to make a profit - but as in the traditional world of finance, bookkeeping plays a vital role in turning these profits into yields.

Accounting in a crypto environment used to be tedious work. Nowadays, with the development of web3 applications, it has become much easier. consola.finance has developed a software for the crypto industry that automatically import all your transactions from different wallets.

This way, you get a complete overview of your crypto portfolio in one place. You can also use consola.finance to generate reports, which is essential for any business operating in the crypto space.

To sum up, web3 provides businesses with new opportunities to build decentralized platforms and to tokenize assets. With the help of accounting software like consola.finance, these businesses can easily keep track of their finances and generate reports for various purposes. And as the technology continues to develop, we will see even more use cases of web3 emerge in the future.

Despite millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrencies being transacted all across the globe every single day, the crypto industry lacks proper accounting tools required for recording such transactions. Most of the crypto bookkeeping is still done manually, or using spreadsheets, which is highly inefficient and time-consuming, which begs the need for more sophisticated automated solutions, for better record-keeping practices.

The global cryptocurrency market cap, at the time of writing stands at just over $1T, making it the 14th largest asset class by market cap. Since the first bitcoin transaction in 2009, the cryptocurrency market has exploded leaps and bounds, not only in terms of price, but also in terms of adoption & acceptance.

Naturally, such explosive growth & adoption has caught the eyes of regulatory authorities all over the globe, who are constantly coming up with new guidelines to ensure smooth and compliant facilitation of crypto-related businesses & activities.

At present, many businesses face major roadblocks in crypto book-keeping & accounting practices, deterring them from venturing into this innovative space. Due to the encrypted and anonymous nature of most cryptocurrencies, crypto accounting is by its very nature, very complex and confounding. However, bookkeeping is crucial for web3 organizations since it provides the foundation for accurate reports and audits. As a result, automated crypto bookkeeping solutions are gaining more and more traction across web3 businesses, in order to help them maintain accurate books in a cost-efficient manner.

What is crypto bookkeeping?

Cryptocurrency bookkeeping is the process of recording all crypto transactions into organized accounts on a regular basis. It ensures that records of any blockchain activity are accurate, up-to-date and comprehensive. Each type of crypto transaction, whether related to trading, staking or providing liquidity must be properly recorded.

At present, there is no benchmark process for crypto bookkeeping. The International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) does not provide a single bookkeeping framework. Thus, businesses are forced to approach crypto bookkeeping on a case-by-case basis.

Problems faced in crypto bookkeeping

Most web3 companies presently use manual processes to keep track of transactions, wallet balances, and other on-chain operations. The reason that they use this prehistoric method is because cryptocurrencies do not have a central authority that tracks and manages funds.

Different web3 businesses such as exchanges, funds, blockchain enterprises, and brokers often manage their tokens on a plethora of different wallets or exchange accounts. These different platforms deliver transaction history in different formats. Therefore, at the time of tax reporting, businesses have to collect accounting data from multiple sources in multiple different formats, making the entire process very inefficient & time-consuming.

The tiresome & complex nature of crypto accounting forces many businesses to lower the priority of bookkeeping tasks in day-to-day trade, which can create significant problems later, inevitably leading to significant accounting costs.

Common issues with crypto bookkeeping

Incorrect Cost-Basis Calculations

Cost basis is the price of the underlying asset when a transaction is performed. If a trader purchases a cryptocurrency at a particular price but sells it in parts, at multiple different prices, then the profit or loss on each transaction should be traced and compared with the original investment cost, on a pro-rata basis. Matching cost-basis retrospectively to transactions is a time-consuming and highly risky process. Subsequent calculations such as realized gains or losses always depend on accurate cost-basis data. Many jurisdictions count each crypto transaction as a taxable event, therefore maintaining an accurate cost-basis becomes of utmost importance for maintaining correct records.

Incorrect Spreadsheet Formula

Spreadsheet software provide an easy-to-use data entry platform for manual processes. These manual processes always run the risk that calculations are susceptible to human error, such as keying in the wrong cells or copying over the wrong number from sources like Etherscan. There are equal opportunities to overtype incorrect numbers or formulas, or incorrectly factor in numbers.

Inaccurate prices matched to transactions

Blockchain transactions usually do not have the price of the relevant token price at the point in time when the transaction happened attached. The price points are relevant to conduct analysis, generate reports and therefore leads to the necessity to manually match the corresponding prices to transactions. Complexity is further increased due to the fact that there is no universal price source. Inaccurate decisions on this front lead to a chain of bookkeeping errors, leading to significant problems in tax reporting, etc.

Missing transactions/data due to importing issues

Currently new blockchains, assets, protocols and other on-chain applications lead to complex data structures. When companies rely only on one source for fetching blockchain data, they face the risk of importing issues with specific transactions on other data points. For example, if a staking protocol is not supported by a block explorer that is used for data fetching, this data might not be imported and be fully missing the consolidated reports. Therefore, it becomes important to only trust reliable software solutions that fetch and consolidate on-chain data.

Incorrect account & transaction labelling

Blockchains provide different sorts of hash and encryption information, but transactions are generally not legible since no qualitative data to understand the purpose of the transaction is stored. If the purpose of a transaction is not noted down at the same time when the transaction is happening, retrospective categorizing becomes a very hectic task. Very often web3 firms are not able to reproduce the purpose of historic transactions and are therefore exposed to the risk of mislabeling on-chain activity.

Benefits of automated crypto bookkeeping

Accounting automation in trad-fi has provided businesses with countless benefits over the years, such as easier extraction of data, faster & more secure data transfer, cloud storage solutions, user-friendly dashboards, quicker data retrieval, automated tax records, cash flow tracking, accurate revenue recognition and so much more.

Naturally, automated crypto bookkeeping also offer users various benefits as well. By automating the capture and classification of crypto transactions from crypto exchanges, wallets, custodial services and decentralized financial blockchains, crypto accounting software reduce the complexity of crypto financial accounting.

In-built features for tax collection and portfolio analytics lessen tax obligations and enhance portfolio performance. Automated software consolidate transaction data across multiple wallets owned by users, allowing them to visually track their inflows, outflows & transaction fees in real-time. Consolidated Profit & Loss statements, instantaneous transaction labeling and real-time reporting of liquidity positions help web3 companies streamline the complicated process of bookkeeping and make it cost-efficient, user-friendly & time-saving.

The need for crypto bookkeeping and accounting software is clear

With the evolution and growth of the cryptocurrency industry, we have seen web3 companies starting to operate under more and more complicated business models, which have made their bookkeeping procedures more complex than ever before. The reliance on crypto accounting software by crypto enterprises, accounting firms, traders, investors, miners and portfolio managers, in order to handle financial bookkeeping will only increase as the overall crypto market keeps evolving.

As crypto becomes more mainstream, countries across the globe will try to tighten regulations around blockchain, which will only boost the need for automated bookkeeping. Such solutions will also provide traditional businesses with the required confidence to jump into the web3 boat, without fearing accounting complexities & the regulations associated with it. A company's success is driven by accurate bookkeeping. It is a foundational accounting process, and developing strategies to improve core areas of your business are nearly impossible without it.

Discover automated crypto finance processes with consola.finance.

What are DAOs?

Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) have been receiving a lot of attention and are expected to lay the groundwork for the future of organizations. DAOs offer the unique opportunity to grow and build decentralized communities and businesses. Since the concept of DAOs is relatively new, to properly navigate this new and evolving landscape, it is important to understand the motivation and benefits behind the formation of a DAO, and therefore, the different types of DAOs that exist today.

DAOs can be seen as a modern variant of an online community that works together towards a shared goal. A DAO is a democratically operated company that is controlled through smart contracts on a sufficiently decentralized blockchain protocol. Membership, which itself has specially defined criteria, allows the contributors of a DAO to collaborate according to a shared set of rules encoded on a blockchain, making governance decisions together in a truly transparent way. Governance tokens give holders the right to participate in voting on topics that define the development and operations of the DAO.

How can DAOs be categorized?

Depending on the goal, structure, operations and technology, DAOs can be categorized as follows:

**Protocol DAOs **Protocol DAOs are designed to manage the governance of decentralized protocols. DAO tokens serve as the voting mechanism to conduct protocol changes. In most cases, these protocols apply to borrowing and lending applications, decentralized exchanges or other types of decentralized applications (dApp). Most prominent examples of Protocol DAOs are MakerDAO, Uniswap, Compound or Yearn.finance.

**Grant DAOs **In a Grant DAO, members contribute capital with the intention of funding and fostering new projects and ventures with a shared objective. Examples of Grant DAOs include Aave Grants DAO, MolochDAO or Uniswap Grants.

**Charity/Philanthropy DAOs **Philanthropy DAOs concentrate on helping social responsibility projects with the shared objective of having a positive impact on the web3 landscape/world. In most cases, Philanthropy DAOs are not-for-profit. Although less common than the other DAO categories, their most prominent Philanthropy DAOs are Big Green DAO and Angel Protocol.

**Social/Creator DAOs **Forming communities made up of like-minded people, such as makers, artists, and creatives is the main objective of so-called Social DAOs. Although they are community-focused, Social DAOs typically have specifically defined entry requirements, such as holding a certain amount of a respective token, owning a certain NFT, or being personally invited to join the community. Social DAOs prioritize social capital over financial capital in a field where speculation rules. Group chats naturally evolved within social DAOs as friends turned into co-workers. Examples for Social/Creator DAOs include FWB, Seed Club, and The Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC).

**Collector DAOs **Members of collector DAOs build a community to collect funds that will be invested in digital collectibles with high demand, such as popular, sometimes expensive, NFTs. The members of these DAOs share ownership of the acquired collectibles through smart contracts. Most well-known examples include Flamingo DAO, PleasrDAO and SquiggleDAO.

**Venture/ Investment DAOs **A very common application of a DAO is a venture or investment “fund”. These DAOs are created to raise funds and conduct investments, embodying more of a community-oriented membership structure. Venture DAOs tend to be considered more of an open-source software project with an angel fund compared to traditional venture capital firms. Examples include MetaCartel, theLAP and BitDAO.

**Media DAOs **Media DAOs enable creators to directly contribute content in exchange for a token payment. Content is fully community-driven, in contrast to a top-down approach where content would be produced with a certain agenda or influenced by advertisers. Examples for media DAOs include Decrypt, BanklessDAO and rekt.

**Entertainment DAOs **Entertainment DAOs create a digital space to engage in fun activities in a decentralized way. Creators have control over how their innovation is governed. Examples include Flufworld or the The Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) or PartyDAO.

**Service DAO **Service DAOs help offer knowledge and advice to other DAOs and protocols and can be compared to traditional consulting firms in the sense that expertise is offered to improve another DAO. Service DAOs offer advice regarding DAO operating mechanisms and culture which is best serviced by other crypto-native contributors. Examples include Indie DAO, llama DAO and Bankless Consulting.

How does consola.finance support DAOs?

Even though each type of DAO may have a different objective or protocol, one thing they all share is the demand for accurate data, transparency, and financial reporting capabilities. Consola.finance developed the most innovative approach to consolidate blockchain data in a fast, secure and reliable way. Finance managers of DAOs can simply connect their wallets, customize their data and generate modular reports with ease. This reduces lost time due to manual work and the risk of human error. The DAO community and token holders benefit from the solution due to increased clarity and transparency on how DAO finances are managed to ensure full compliance of token investments. Overall, consola.finance helps shift the focus back to the community goal by lifting the burden of data reliability.

Get more info via https://consola.finance/ or get directly in touch with us.

Cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies have resulted in an incredible amount of innovation with massive potential for the further reinvention of how digital value is owned, used and transferred. Businesses across all sectors have already found significant use-cases, not only as investment opportunities, but rather opportunities that increase operational efficiency, improve transactional security, and create a technologically competitive advantage in their respective industry. Today’s most dominant industries, both digital and non-digital, will begin to see decentralized blockchain protocols overtake incumbents over the course of the next decade. However, the current pool of crypto-native companies still encounter a number of significant shortcomings that can discourage businesses from the full trust and adoption of this growing technology.

Consola.finance has a clear mission that brings clarity and control to a company’s crypto finances. Through our back-end finance process solution, we are enabling crypto-native companies to refocus their precious resources to value-adding activities.

Consola.finance is the first human-readable blockchain explorer with additional business functionalities. The platform serves as a single source of truth for crypto wallet data. Through the Consola-Financial-Engine©, we offer companies an extremely intuitive approach to consolidating, augmenting and exporting blockchain data with the goal of providing the highest level of transparency and insight. Furthermore, companies have the ability to work with best-in-class control functionalities for their crypto finances.

Executing, automating transaction flows, and improving team synchronicity has never been so simple in a crypto-centric environment. We stand out from the competition through our modularized solution, offering flexible customization, intelligent collaboration, and the simplest user experience.

Several issues with self-custodied wallets exist

The current market sentiment shows a strong trend towards the decentralization of crypto wallet management (“not your keys not your coins”), however, most companies still face several problems in regard to their crypto wallet management.

First of all, due to the high number of varying wallets and transactions, there is a concern over data reliability and accurate reporting which needs to be addressed in a diverse cryptocurrency environment. Noting the purpose of an individual transaction and categorizing the expense at time of occurrence can result in an overly complex reconciliation process. Bookkeeping can become a nightmare for a business where scaling becomes increasingly difficult as the transaction volume and wallet count increases. Intransparent and tedious accounting processes can be burdensome, requiring a significant amount of focused time to gather and reconcile data.

Another issue, as crypto-native companies address the need for quality data, inefficiencies have presented themselves in the form of relying on different software solutions. Most financial processes are conducted across multiple software workstreams, meaning any data aggregation needs to be connected with the possibility of human error. Current block explorers and crypto exchanges so far have only provided a fraction of the functionalities needed to keep track of transactions — meaning more time lost extracting, reconciling, and compiling data with spreadsheet software.

Consola.finance partners with several DAOs, web3 firms, and traditional companies to solve the mentioned pain points in a collaborative and meaningful way. Our partners have shared the frustration with the issues at hand and provided us with valuable insights for finding an innovative single source solution.

Through cutting-edge technology, consola.finance brings the highest level of clarity and control

Consola.finance is tackling these limiting pain points using an innovative set of new features. The highest level of data clarity will be achieved by enabling users to visualize their wallet balances, track net inflows/outflows, aggregate blockchain or protocol network fees, and run portfolio and transaction analytics through our proprietary AI technology. Notably, this is not a one size fits all solution — customization for individual user needs is one of our key focus areas. Users are able to assign unique wallet names, auto-categorize transaction types, incorporate specific data points, attach documents, and parse custom smart-contract transactions. All features of consola.finance can be leveraged using a collaborative team approach, simply meaning that our user rights management functions make it easy to work together, track activity, and share documents as a team.

To provide best-in-class control, consola.finance builds on existing multi-signature solutions and improves them by laying over new functions. Consola.finance provides a cost-saving and secure way for on-chain swap transactions through the use of defi protocols directly on the platform. With regards to crypto spend management, consola.finance supports recurring crypto payments, batch transactions, and custom spending limits. These features are further backed using Notifications and Alarms pertaining to any wallet movements, rounding up the wide range of our package offering.

This is just the beginning — consola.finance serves as the foundation to onboard the next wave of companies to crypto.

**Get early access to consola.finance **Sign up for our waitlist via https://consola.finance/ and get early access to test our product.
