Dataverse, your secure personal space in web3

Problem

1. We left our identity and split our attention across diff platforms online, we lack of a sound place to maintain our unified persona on the web, and left this great wealth to (big) tech companies to make profit. Now with the blockchain, we could be more active with our data and make benefits for our own.

2. With the privacy concern, we deserve a secure space to cultivate our unified persona.

Solution

Our solution is to create a curate-to-own layer, specifically you could curate the web into personal space and own your behavioral data.

As you can see, within the blockchain landscape, now we have 1) open assets on ethereum, layer 2 and other public blockchains. 2) infrastructure to enable data composition (we have AR, Ceramic, Filecoin, etc) 3) what’s next?

We give one answer by scratching and building a curation layer – dataverse.

It’s obvious that we split our attention among apps (youtube,twitter) and dApps (mirror,opensea,etc) during our onine-ing.

Dataverse is a secure space for you to curate and aggregate all your belongings generated on those platforms, to compose your unified persona gradually. Here are some questions to draw on:

1) What is a curation layer?

Previously when the users do book-marking, they have to interact with the central server in between, now they can curate directly via the protocol.

2) Why curation layer makes the web ownable?

a. Cryptography and signature Technology provide guarantee b. the viable design of streamID provided by open protocols like Ceramic.

3) What’s behavioral data? What’s the relationship with curation?

Behavioral data accumulates when you interact with web3 open assets* (the process of curation).

*Open assets are those issued without a central entity.

Architecture

Data can be like defi, in terms of composability. With the technology like zero-knowledge proof, privacy-preserving computation going mature, this supposed to be the very exciting and concrete utility in ownership economy. Why not play our own data Legos?

i read about Vitalik’s soulbound[2] and remembered Andy and Jasmine’s discussion during kernel fireside about “proof of time (in virtual world) “, we are so troubled by how we could better spend our time on-line, part of the reason is that we rely much on the apps&platforms to “understand” us, but actually they can only do very little job and probably lead to exhaustion.

Let’s detail the architecture: You access to all apps&dApps and generate all kinds of curation behavior via DID (signature and sign-in), which is controlled by your private key.

Your curation behavior is made up of data streams[3] (aka streamID). For instance, when you curate “jpgs” on opensea, videos on youtube or articles on mirror, your data flows in various streams. An streamID is the basic unit of data[4].

we use ceramic’s composable data streams to create a private folder system. you can keep it fully private and curate multi-media assets and multi-chain assets are viable via different streams.

In that sense, Our curation behavior can be described through the connections of streamIDs. Imagine cells organizing themselves and forming organs, those streamIDs could form a hiphop heart in your dataverse.

Here are 3 key features that grows🌱 with dataverse.

‘data wallet’

Just like metamask as your assets wallet, dataverse can be your “data wallet”

‘Portable folder’

Just like Finder, your curations (in the future, data assets) can be categorized, filtered, removed and foresee-ably,composed.

‘Pluggability’

As said, you maintain a unified persona in dataverse, which is totally under your control and can be plugged into any third party applications.

Potential impact

The first networked and secure folder system. It’s scalable for you to apply batch curations and modify folder indexing trees on encrypted user tables;

Users can own their online behavior data. This makes off-chain data shareable across apps via pluggable SDKs;

Bridge web2 and web3 for tracking favorites in one place, e.g., NFT, Mirror, Youtube, Bilibili. Users can form a dynamic and unified persona via accumulated curations.

We are designing dataverse to be a tool that has the real utility and easy to use like in web2, also it is very different underneath with the data composability architecture.

Growth strategy

For example, we work with MOAC exhibition where they integrate dataverse sdk on website so users could secure their curations.

• Work with web3 media to explore decentralized dynamic media[5]

Curation[6] is an important process of “advertising” good content, we are suggesting decentralized curation as a way of making the next “TIMES” “New Yorker” ;)

Future Use Cases

IF an artist wants to know the profiles of their audiences in order to create dynamic NFTs(more interactive pieces that combine the REAL&Shareable personality of the audiences) ,he/she can request for persona from his audiences.

For instance, Takentheorem’s recent work reflects his attempt at dynamicNFT[8]: an NFT that reacts (adaptively) to the user’s holdings of digital assets, generating corresponding visual changes while showing the dynamic connection between you and the DAOs. This is no longer a pre-set or static jpg/GIF, it changes according to YOUR on-chain behaviour, it is an “artwork about you”. So it could be imaginable if we replace “on-chain behavior” into “curation behavior”.

1. WAGMI Tiger Collecting Event drew to a satisfactory close

To celebrate the Chinese Year of the Tiger, Ownership Labs, in partnership with SeeDAO, TingDAO, Breaking Panda, Balefu, and Soully World, jointly conducted OpenSea Treasure Hunt with precious prizes ranging from Chinese New Year red pockets, limited edition NFTs, POAPs, rare whitelists, and more. The event was held for 12 days, from January 29th to February 9th. During the event, the team tweeted about NFTs with high probability of generating “Tigers” and received overwhelming responses.

Hello! Please introduce yourself and the project.

Specter：

I am the co-founder of OwnershipLabs, you can call me Specter. I am responsible for the current operation management and external business of the company, including a small amount of development operation and maintenance. I started to do blockchain research in the university laboratory in 2017, and my research direction is the extensibility of blockchain and multi-party secure computing. And my partner has a PhD in artificial intelligence. So we got the idea to protect user data ownership through blockchain. We have known about IPFS and Filecoin for a long time. IPFS is a great protocol for distributed data storage. We believe that they are the most important infrastructure of blockchain and we should use IPFS to be our underlying architecture. We started working on the Dataverse last April. NFT was popular at that time, so our product are designed to be tried from NFT. So you can see the current product form of Dataverse and you can see me here. Thank you.

Specter：

Ownership Labs has established personal data space Dataverse, a Web3 folder system. Just like the Finder in a Macbook, you can safely store your favorite metaverse assets (even apps) such as NFTs and Mirrors. Users can get experiences similar to those on the Internet while controlling their own behavioral data and personal portraits. Dataverse was previously ranked first in the NFT track of Gitcoin Round 11&12 and will adhere to the goal of developing a user-centric application ecosystem, and providing SDK/API to more NFT platforms, standardizing off-chain “likes”, “comments”, “followers” and other social behavior data that have not yet been put on the chain, so that the platform can stay completely decentralized. Returning the data sovereignty to users indicates that data will become sharable across platforms. Loop is an early demonstration application developed based on the Dataverse SDK to personalize the user’s information flow while increasing the value of the user’s personal data.

Question 1:

Keeping NFTs in your wallet, or keeping them on Opensea, etc. will also ensure ownership. If so, I wonder what kind of added value you can create for users by being able to simply classify and organize NFTs.

Specter:

You need to know that Opensea applies centralized data storage. This means our preference data are controlled by Opensea. Though we control the ownership of on-chain NFT, we do not maintain our off-chain behavior data, like favorites, comments, following. As you know, Opensea seems to be preparing for IPO instead of issuing tokens. it is not a pure Web3 community project. On our platform, we ensure that your data only belongs to you. After you log in to Dataverse with your wallet, a DID will be generated, along with a folder generated simultaneously on our underlying storage network. The folder is stored on Ceramic and Filecoin. Thanks to the distributed ledger, no one is accessible to your data but yourself.

Data ownership instead of just NFT ownership is what we actually guarantee each user. For Opensea, they can make profits after collecting our data, by risking our information safety and asset security, similar to what Facebook has done.

It is wise enough to see what our added value is now. We are a web3 tool that offers private data space for every user on web3. You are allowed to curate NFTs into your Dataverse from various NFT platforms while viewing your collected and owned NFTs there. What’s more, you can follow other DIDs including those of whales, artists, creators, and see their on-chain dynamics, like what they are buying, minting, and selling. Our services are not limited to web3. Though our plugin only supports NFT curation on Ethereum, it is expected to expand on other multi-chains. Our technical architecture is a new data ownership layer on top of the internet. So in near future, whenever you see content on the web, including web3 articles (like Mirror), a tweet, a website, you will be allowed to save them into Dataverse via our plugin.

At present, Dataverse is a private data space for users to store their favorite metaverse assets and digital footprints on web3. And we build several mini-apps on top of it, including Finder and Loop. The newly launched Loop is an information tracking tool, allowing users to track the hotted topics and dynamics in Web3. You can think of Loop as a Twitter, but you can get valuable information for making NFT investment.

We believe that users will interact more with metaverse assets in the future, so the number of their digital footprints will be growing fastest. Different from Web2, your behavior data will be securely stored in your personal Dataverse space, finally you will own your data ownership, control your profile and persona.

In the future, all these mentioned core functions, including Loop, will be integrated into Dataverse as a mini program to provide the best user experience within one interface.

I’m curious if there is a way or approach for Dataverse to get common users to use Filecoin and IPFS.

This is exactly what we are doing right now. Users can use IPFS without actually feeling it via Dataverse. Indeed, when using Dataverse, users are required to sign with wallets at first, during which, DIDs are simultaneously generated as well as the user-centric folder. The folder is, in fact, stored on IPFS. When users use the plugin, they can curate NFT into the folder via their identity. They do not need to understand how the data is stored, but they own the data.

You mentioned on your website ‘Dataverse Bring your Fav NFT in one Click’. can you explain simply how it will work and how to use it? is this we really just click of One Click and it will work?Also can I get a brief explanation about the utility of Dataverse Token?

The very first thing you need to do is to download our plugin.Go to https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/dataverse/kcigpjcafekokoclamfendmaapcljead?hl=zh-CN to download it. After installing, you will see a button that take you to personal space https://dataverse.art/.

Also, you can enter Opensea and other NFT marketplaces. Then you can right click to open the SaveNFT interface, which offers functions of creating folders, curating NFTs, and following addressed like NFT owners and creators. If it is the first time to use the plugin, you will be asked to sign with your wallet for generating DIDs. Finally, you will be able to see your collected NFT in your space, including details like NFT metadata and floor price.

Can you briefly introduce your project?

Dataverse is your personal space in web3, you can think it as a secret folder system like Finder in MacOS. It allows you to curate NFTs or Mirror articles directly into your space. The space is fully owned by you, ensuring data ownership and privacy. Mini-apps are also built on top of Dataverse, so you can manage cross-chain and cross-platform information, with the function of curating, exhibiting, exploring and socializing.

Which chains does Dataverse currently support?

Dataverse currently only supports ETH chains, support for other chains is being added.

2021 is the golden year for Metaverse which has become a narrative in the crypto world. Our product, Dataverse, is committed to** building the first user’s personal data space**. Users can curate to own their favorite NFTs and social graphs, while in charge of their own behavioral data. This allows users to enjoy the data ownership and privacy in web3.

OwnershipLabs is grateful for early supports from our users and Gitcoin contributors and for the persistent efforts of the team. Towards the goals of returning data sovereignty and attention back to everyone, we have achieved sustainable development in the past year. Here are major milestones:

• In September, Dataverse Beta was** officially launched**, where users can create private folders to save NFTs and social relations.

• Organized offline events during Shanghai Metaverse Week* and Wanxiang Blockchain Panel.*

• Received donations from 7,000 contributors on GR11 and** 8,000** contributors on GR12.

• Curation SDK has been integrated into our partners’ websites and will open to all developers soon.

Ever since the birth of Bitcoin, the variety of different types of applications in blockchain has clear the vision of development in web3 thanks to all original users and participants. They have been putting their efforts into discovering the potential forms of the new internet system.

The nature of the internet is the connection. Hence, the fundamental logic behind its evolution is the progression of connection. Early blockchain applications, including Defi, actually shared very few active players. NFT has brought the public attention to blockchain and the actual reason is** its element of connection**. It is noticeable that NFT is a type of property that shares significant social and collection elements, which the value is visible only by the transaction between people.

What caused the “weak ties” between on-chain information

The current ecology of the Blockchain internet is still ill-informed. Its elements of connecting are still at a relatively weak stage which does not fit the nature of decentralization of blockchain. The reason behind this can be complicated.

• One of the typical reasons is due to the quickness of refreshment of blockchain pieces of information, such as how one hot spot has been replaced by another without being noticed in the first place. Too many sources of informations are also causing users to follow multiple media, such as websites, Twitter, telegram, discord while even following various channels within those platforms.

• Another reason is that experienced players tend not to voluntarily share information, therefore the information is not circulating ideally and would cause slow responding.

Thus, we would hope to have a product that could polymerize information, allowing users to self-follow experienced players and their connections so that they can follow those information streams. The product shall also allow users to share their moments without visiting multiple platforms, or have the one-click function for visiting all channels, simply by following the wallet address to access all trends of one web3 participant.

As filter and bridge of information

Web3 network is the connection of service, contents, relationships, and values. Application platforms will provide service and creators can produce content. Platform and creators together will produce massive contents which are beyond human’s limited focus. Therefore, relationship networks are how users to filter information, meanwhile, it is also the propagation. Minimum frictions between value networks and other forms of networks are the most distinguishing feature of web 3, which gains the most attention among web 3 participants.

We built our product system based on such theory of web 3 due to our desire to consummate the connection between the network of service, contents, relationships, and values to accelerate the information streams in Web 3.

Loop: your web3 data stream

Loop is a content aggregator for** tracking the latest events in the open web**, including NFTs, Mirrors articles, or POAP badges.

It allows users to** personalize their activity feed** and filter out spam via community discovery. Like Twitter, Loop can automatically integrate on-chain and off-chain dynamics of multiple wallets into a real-time information stream and present it in user personal spaces. With LOOP, users can follow other people’s wallet addresses, in which case, they can track their friends, KOLs, whales, and watch their on-chain and off-chain dynamics, and even the NFT transactions of CryptoPunks holders; at the same time, users can also view many high-quality articles on Mirror.

NFT, media for information-based socialization

Loop is a big attempt on the NFT social network of information streams. As a user, you can put your friends, KOLs, or articles on Mirror as nodes of your relationship networks to access NFT content that is possibly beneficial for you.

You can also put your followed NFT collections into Dataverse — — a personal space that allows you to host your NFT collection. You can perform more content management operations in your space. New Progress:

(1) Conduct and summary of AMA activities in overseas communities

On December 8, Dataverse conducted the first overseas community AMA at Grey CryptoHub. The summary of the AMA activity has also been published on several official platforms for reading. Dataverse has realized the importance of the community since the very beginning and has been actively developing its own community. At present, the Telegram community members have successfully exceeded 3,200.

(2) Successfully launched NFT treasure hunt on Galaxy Space

On December 13, Dataverse held a week-long NFT Treasure Hunt on Galaxy Space, during which there will be as many as 66 exclusive NFT giveaways to reward fans for their past support for Dataverse.

(3) Loop function upgrades & bug fixes

As one of the Legendary Partners, Dataverse participated in the “Shanghai Metaverse Week 2021” and successfully held the NFT curation offline event.

The content of the event included the Dataverse experience store, NFT blind box stickers, curation map, and triangle table, where the Dataverse team introduced the product content and vision. With the Dataverse plugin, users could collect on mainstream NFT platforms for curation and sharing in their personal space. In the “Shanghai Metaverse Week 2021”, Dataverse also provided a professional collection storage solution for MOCA online exhibition, allowing users to collect NFT collections on any webpage through the integration of our SDK.

Before the start of the event, we opened a product experience store. Participants directly operated Dataverse products on-site, and members of the ownership team introduced product usage methods and product vision face to face. We also gained a lot of user feedback and suggestions.

The Dataverse triangle table started with everyone’s self-introduction. Many NFT followers in the blockchain industry came to the scene, thank you for your attention and support to Dataverse. We are very excited to announce that Dataverse has successfully joined Ceramic mainnet and integrated its key technologies for building the Beta software. @BinanceLive (Oct. 7th), two ladies from our team, Jessie and Josephine were invited by NFT4METAVERSE(MC) to discuss design philosophies behind Dataverse product — — the magic combination of data and NFT.

MC — Q1:

Previously, I found a very interesting article written by Jessie and I was surprised by her insights on NFTs. It’s quite different from other popular ideas out there.

I think most of us, especially Jessie, view NFT as a sort of data asset. Are NFTs forming our second brain in the digital world? Why do you think so?

Jessie:

I came into crypto late 2017. At that time, I was more into research on Bitcoins and other popular blockchains. In 2019, DeFi came. Financial use cases were built during DeFi summer.

But for NFT, it has storytelling attributes. I like the explanation Jesse Walden gave before. He says NFT is a media chain. It’s a universal canonical content registry. It’s like a very huge notebook to register all these media with unique IDs. The network so far is Ethereum.

In Web3, NFT gives media and content identities, and that becomes the identity of data. It’s not just the anchor of data since the anchor is just a description. With unique IDs, media or content can interact with other virtual things, forming a more connected network!

Whether it’s a social graph or a knowledge graph, or just contextual media, they interact with each other. We can navigate and discover amazing things through paths of NFTs. That’s why we think NFT is a good way to extend human thoughts.

Jo:

Another reason for bridging data and NFT is to own our preference data. In Web2, tech giants use our data to their advantage. Like when shopping on Taobao or Amazon, we get customized recommendations based on our preferences or past shopping behaviors, which is a trade-off between convenience and data privacy. In Web3 with Dataverse, we’re giving back data ownership to everyone.

Jessie:

Your data is a documentation of your behavior and how you distribute attention on the web. How to capture that is what we are currently researching and what we’re focusing on.

Dataverse product can capture your social behaviors and give ownership back to you. You can either make profits with it or make recreations or something. It all depends on you.

MC — Q2:

What kind of NFT projects are representing the social network and knowledge graph? Could you give an example?

Jessie:

My favorite one is called Blitmaps. I think the difference between Blitmaps and other NFT avatars is context and story. Those NFT avatars like punks are more like an identity for a tribe. But for Blitmaps it is another kind of story.

Blitmaps is created by 16 artists. Every two of them can be mixed and generate a sibling. There are about 1600 siblings. In total, there are 1700 Blitmaps in the Blitverse.

First, we create the basic Blitmaps character in the Blitverse. Then we have the heroes, who are human characters based on bitmaps, called Blitnauts. There’re maybe 17000 Blitnauts you can create and then there will be the enemies for Blitnauts.

What I’m trying to say is that they have the storyline and the plan. The founder, known as Dom, also drives other projects: the loot project, Supdrive and PFP. And he makes those projects connect with each other. This kind of story is quite exciting.

MC — Q3:

What is Dataverse? Is it an NFT curation tool or a new kind of social networks?

Jessie:

NFT curation is the first tool that we are currently integrating into Dataverse. You can easily save your favorite NFTs into your private space. This provides an option for managing NFTs you love but cannot own right now. You can enable SaveNFT function by installing the Dataverse Chrome extension, then you can collect NFTs from several marketplaces including Opensea, Rarible, Foundation and more. You can create collections, add tags and notes on NFTs, then save them to specific collections.

In Dataverse, you have your own decentralized identity and profile page, showing NFTs that you created, owned and liked. You can share this unique identity with friends, then they can view NFTs and collections you authorize to them. Social graph is the second tool we would like to build.

Jo:

We partnered up with Ceramic Network and Filecoin Network to build user-centered data cloud. You can import or export your data whenever you want, or sync data to the Filecoin network for permanent storage. This is the basis for building your second brain. You own your preference data and so services can be delivered right to you, like NFT recommendation provided by global data scientists.

Jessie:

We will add more exciting functions in upcoming days. We also interviewed our friends and investors, who are active NFT curators and collectors. In terms of what to do next with Dataverse, people have different intentions. Curation is the first step and the next step depends on you.

MC — Q4:

Opensea is the largest NFT trading platform and Tryshowtime is an NFT social platform. So what is the main differences between these platforms and Dataverse?

Jo:

If you’re an NFT newbie, it’s really hard to navigate this crazy NFT world at first, because there are too many projects out there, especially with OpenSea being able to list so many projects. It’s hard to distinguish which projects worth your attention. Dataverse comes in by adding a filter or a curation layer. You can sort or filter or view KOL & friends’ NFTs in Dataverse.

As for Tryshowtime, it’s basically a social app like Instagram, focusing more on how to interact with others. But Dataverse focuses on building your own space with guaranteed data ownership and privacy, it’s more about you.

When you interact with NFTs, your behavior pattern changes and NFT impact accumulates. Right now NFTs are mostly booming around Art and Collectibles. We believe there are other forms emerging, like using NFT to register your thoughts and behaviors on-chain.

Jessie:

I quite agree with what Jo said about Tryshowtime.

In my opinion, Opensea and other marketplaces, are just places to buy and sell. Opensea is not doing curation. For social apps like Tryshowtime, are also doing curation but in a different way. Their intention is to build a larger social network. But for us, we want to create something useful for individuals, something that unleashes your creativity. That’s the first step, and then we may consider some other functions like social.

Jo:

Yeah, while designing Dataverse, we think a lot about the idea of “tools for thought.” Ideally we’d love to see it as a transformative tool for extending human thoughts and for building a digital brain.

MC — Q5:

Last but not least, let’s talk about the Shanghai Metaverse Week. Ownership Labs is a very important partner of the metaverse week. Also, you sponsored the Shanghai Blockchain International Week, hosted by Wanxiang Blockchain. Why are you active in partnership with these friends? I want to hear your thoughts.

Jessie:

First of all, I think we would take this opportunity to speak to the whole community. Metaverse is a network, not only for the blockchain industry but for all the industry. We want to show the idea, show what we’re doing, and express our thoughts on that. We could have an open discussion with all the participants.

Jo:

Yeah, I think Wanxiang Blockchain Week is more industry-focused and tech-related. Shanghai Metaverse Week is more like a cultural event where people gather together to talk about metaverse, people with different professional background. We will keep an eye on potential collabs during the event.

MC:
