An honest look at our summer updates: conviction-funded cleanups on Gardens, Hypercerts as impact credentials, gasless onboarding, and sunsetting the Farcaster mini app to consolidate our dApp.

September 2026

It has been a dense few months. Rather than post a series of small updates, we wanted to write one honest account of what has actually shipped, what we decided to wind down, and where the protocol is going next. This is that post.

Gardens fund: conviction voting is live

The most structurally important thing we shipped recently is not a feature in the dApp. It is the transition to community-governed funding via Gardens.

The Verified Cleanup Fund on Gardens.fund is now live and active. For now: it works, two real-world cleanup programs have been funded by it, and we are watching what proposals come next.

What has shipped in the dApp

A few things worth naming that shipped quietly over the past months:

What has shipped in the dApp

Hypercerts as portable impact credentials. DeCleanup now issues Hypercerts as onchain impact credentials for verified cleanups. Every 10 verified cleanups, a Hypercert is generated and claimable directly from the dApp. Each one carries structured metadata: cleanup dates, location, contributor count, waste collected, and CO2e estimate. Organizers can optionally publish their Hypercert to AT Protocol, creating a persistent, decentralised record that lives outside any single platform. The result is a portable proof of environmental work that organizers and funders can point to, not just a token balance or a social post. This is what turns a cleanup event into a durable, composable asset.

AI-assisted verification is live. Submissions now get automated fraud scoring and waste categorisation alongside core-team review. This speeds up confirmation time and adds consistency that scales better than manual review alone. It joins the optional YOLOv8 ML pre-screening layer available in the full protocol stack, which runs computer vision on photo evidence before it reaches a human verifier. Communities with higher fraud-resistance requirements can enable the ML layer; others skip it and rely on the AI-assisted review and peer verification alone.

Account abstraction is now the default onboarding path. Google or email sign-in creates a browser-side EOA, predicts a Safe smart account, and Pimlico sponsors gas via ERC-4337. Users arrive in the dApp with a wallet, gas covered, without buying anything or installing anything.

The /api/impact endpoint is live. Every verified cleanup event is published in machine-readable JSON via the public API. Built for Carbon Copy integration and for open data reporting that institutional partners and grant reviewers need. Data includes event date, GPS coordinates, volunteer count, estimated plastic weight, verifier attestation, CO2e estimate using IPCC AR6 factors, and the Hypercert URI. We hope to see it live soon on Carbon Copy page, meanwhile watch the tracker grow on decleanup.net

A sponsor page is live at app.decleanup.net/sponsor. You can now fund specific cleanup events directly onchain. The page pulls active and upcoming events from the dApp, shows each event's funding goal and amount raised, and lets you send cUSD on Celo straight to the event organizer's address. If you are inside MiniPay it auto-connects; otherwise WalletConnect and injected wallets work. No intermediary, no platform fee, no multisig delay. The transaction goes directly to the organizer. A record is written onchain and in the dApp database so the raised total updates in real time.

If you want to fund the broader Verified Cleanup Fund rather than a specific event, you can send $cUSD directly to the Gardens pool. That pool distributes to cleanup programs via conviction voting rather than going to one event.

CO2e tracking is running. Using the IPCC AR6 plastic displacement factor of roughly 3.6 kg CO2e per kg of plastic collected and diverted from open burning or landfill, every verified event now carries a climate impact estimate alongside the physical impact data.

The Farcaster Mini App is winding down

We are sunsetting the Base Farcaster Mini App. Details on the transition will follow in a dedicated post.

The short version: the Base action layer continues. The lightweight cleanup logging, $bDCU rewards, and social incentive mechanics on Base are not going away. What is changing is the delivery mechanism. The Farcaster-native format is being wound down as we consolidate toward the unified dApp experience after the Base/Celo merge.

If you have been using the Farcaster Mini App, nothing is lost. Your verified events and $bDCU balances are onchain. Watch for the transition post.

GitHub restructure: building in the open, properly

We have reorganised the DeCleanup-Network GitHub organisation. This deserves explaining because it reflects a deliberate decision about what kind of open source project we want to be.

What was wrong before

We had 12 repositories. Six of them were earlier versions of the stack: V1 EVM contracts, V1 frontend, a standalone backend service, an experimental Soroban port for Stellar, an old GitHub Pages landing, a stale standalone docs site. Together those six repos had 32 forks. Contributors were building on our code and landed in the wrong place, looking at architecture we had completely superseded.

What we did

We archived all six legacy repos. Each has a banner at the top explaining what replaced it and linking forward. History and forks are preserved. Nothing is deleted.

We reframed the active repos:

decleanup-main-celo
This is the V2 production reference implementation: Next.js, Supabase, Hardhat, Hypercerts, account abstraction, optional YOLOv8 ML pre-screening, verifier dashboard, public impact API.

decleanup-landing-standalone
is now the marketing site.

Farcaster-Mini-App
is going to be worked on to wind off.

We created two new repos designed explicitly for people who want to build with our pieces rather than fork the whole app:

community-action-contracts contains the Solidity contracts extracted and made domain-agnostic: the
ActionSubmission
lifecycle,
DCURewardManager
,
ClaimVault
with EIP-712 signed claims and category caps,
ImpactProductNFT
, and the
$cDCU
token. Hardhat config including Base networks. Tests. Deploy scripts. Celo deployed addresses. Fork this if you want to build any community action protocol where self-reported participation data is not trustworthy enough.

web3-community-onboarding contains the gasless AA onboarding layer:
client-wallet
,
smart-account
,
paymaster
, and the
auth
extract with Auth.js Google and email magic link providers, plus the
ConnectFlow
shell component. Fork this if you are building a consumer web3 app where users should not need to buy crypto to participate.

The org README now maps the full architecture clearly, names what is forkable and why, and links everything correctly.

The philosophy behind this

DeCleanup Rewards dapp is a reference implementation. The protocol beneath it is yours to fork.

The peer-verification loop, the EIP-712 signed claim system, the gasless onboarding pattern, the Hypercert-to-open-data pipeline: none of these are cleanup-specific. They are solutions to problems any community action protocol faces. We built them for cleanups. We want other people to use them for tree planting, citizen science, community reporting, mutual aid, anything where unverifiable self-reporting is a real problem.

By making the forkable pieces explicit, we are trying to be a genuine upstream for other protocols rather than a monolith that others have to reverse-engineer.

Where we are going

A few things in motion that are worth naming:

The Base/Celo merge. The two chain implementations are converging into a single unified app. After the merge,
decleanup-app
covers both chains under one codebase, one frontend, one verifier dashboard. Users on Base and users on Celo will share a leaderboard, a reputation system, and eventually a unified identity.

The reputation and marketplace layer. The current Impact Product (dynamic NFT) tracks verified cleanup count and levels up dynamically. The next layer connects that reputation to a marketplace where verified cleanup contributors can access opportunities, sponsorships, and resources based on demonstrated track record rather than social following.

Open data integrations. The /api/impact endpoint is already live. We are in conversation with Carbon Copy about integration and have structured the data format to be compatible with EU open data platform requirements. The goal is for DeCleanup verified events to become a data layer that other platforms and researchers can build on.

A note on the pace of this

We are a small team. We ship slowly and honestly.

The GitHub restructure, the Gardens executions, the open data pipeline, the account abstraction refactor: none of these are headline-grabbing launches. They are the kind of infrastructure work that makes a protocol real rather than just a demo. We think that is worth documenting.

If you want to follow along more closely, the Paragraph subscription is the right place. We post here when we have something worth saying.

If you want to build with our contracts or onboarding layer, the repos are open.

If you want to run a verified cleanup in your city or region, the dApp is at dapp.decleanup.net. You can install the app on home screen via browser settings and enable notifications.

DeCleanup Network decleanupnet.eth decleanup.net

Telegram: t.me/DecentralizedCleanup

X: @decleanupnet

It substantially amends the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) - but not in the way most commentary suggests. The Omnibus package raised the reporting thresholds significantly: only companies with more than 1,000 employees and over €450M in net annual turnover now remain in scope, dramatically reducing the number of companies required to report. Reporting requirements for FY2027 apply to this narrower set of large companies; smaller companies in their value chains are explicitly protected from extensive data requests.

What this means in practice: fewer companies are directly mandated to report — but those that are have stricter, assurance-backed requirements. And the narrowing of mandatory scope has increased competitive pressure to demonstrate voluntary credibility. Companies that fall outside the mandate but want to maintain ESG standing with investors, partners, and buyers in mandated supply chains need to show verifiable impact, not because the law requires it of them directly, but because the people they sell to are now legally required to verify it.

Source: Directive (EU) 2026/470; DLA Piper; Crowell & Moring

27 March 2026 - Empowering Consumers Directive transposition deadline.

Directive (EU) 2024/825 - the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive - required all EU member states to transpose it into national law by 27 March 2026. The Directive entered into force on 26 March 2024 and must be applied from September 27, 2026. It amends the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive to introduce stricter rules for environmental claims in consumer communications.

The key prohibition: generic, unsubstantiated environmental claims. "Plastic neutral," "carbon balanced," "environmentally responsible" - from September 2026, enforcement against misleading environmental claims will intensify across EU markets, with companies required to substantiate environmental claims with verifiable, accessible evidence. For future environmental claims and sustainability labels, third-party verification will be necessary.

Source: Directive (EU) 2024/825; Sidley Austin; Cradle to Cradle Institute

27 September 2026 - Directive 2024/825 begins to apply.

This is the date enforcement begins. The new EU environmental claims and greenwashing rules apply from 27 September 2026. Businesses must review how they substantiate green claims, use environmental sustainability labels, and prepare internal compliance processes.

The specific requirement that matters for environmental impact buyers: environmental claims must be backed by clear, objective, publicly verifiable commitments. A company cannot simply claim that a product is "environmentally friendly" without providing verifiable and accessible evidence of how that conclusion was reached.

This is the specification that certificate-based verification cannot meet. Certificates are privately verifiable — a document you can show, from an authority you paid. Public verifiability means the underlying evidence is accessible without the certificate issuer's participation.

The Structural Failure That Drove the Regulation

The regulatory response was not arbitrary. It followed documented patterns of failure in voluntary environmental markets.

The plastic credit evidence:

Analysis by SourceMaterial of Plastic Credit Exchange (PCX) - the world's first plastic credit registry, operating in the Philippines - found that only 14% of PCX credits went towards actual recycling. The remaining 86% of credit-generating projects were burning plastic waste as fuel in cement kilns ("co-processing"), a process that releases CO2 and toxic chemicals. Companies that had bought these credits were claiming "plastic neutral" status while most of the plastic was being incinerated, not recycled.

A broader AFP and SourceMaterial analysis of four major credit marketplaces found only around a quarter of all credits issued were for recycling projects — more than two-thirds were for co-processing and other forms of incineration. A separate investigation by Break Free From Plastic and the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives found that 60% of PCX's net-zero-certified credit records had no third-party auditor.

Sources: Al Jazeera / SourceMaterial, August 2025; Break Free From Plastic / GAIA — "Smoke and Mirrors" report

The carbon credit evidence:

A meta-study published in Nature Communications in November 2024, led by Dr. Benedict Probst at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, systematically reviewed more than 60 empirical studies covering 2,346 carbon mitigation projects - roughly one-fifth of total credit volume ever issued, approximately one billion tonnes of CO₂. The finding: less than 16% of carbon credits issued to the evaluated projects represented actual emission reductions. For clean cookstove projects, actual reductions corresponded to only 11% of credits issued.

Source: Probst, B.S. et al., "Systematic assessment of the achieved emission reductions of carbon crediting projects," Nature Communications 15, 9562 (2024). The trust chain runs: collectors self-report → issuers certify the self-report → buyers trust the certification → regulators accept the buyer's claim. At every step, someone takes someone else's word for it. There is no ground truth layer. The regulatory response — requiring publicly verifiable evidence - is a demand for one.

What Public Verifiability Actually Requires

A claim that meets the Directive 2024/825 standard - publicly verifiable evidence - needs three properties the current system cannot provide.

Independence. The evidence must be produced by something other than the party making the claim. A company's impact report, however detailed, is not independent. Neither is a certificate from a registry the company paid. Independence requires a verification layer with no financial relationship to the outcome being certified.

Persistence. Evidence must exist in a form that cannot be altered after the fact. A PDF can be replaced. A database entry can be edited. A cryptographic record whose content is addressed by its hash cannot be changed without breaking the reference - any alteration is detectable.

Accessibility. Evidence must be publicly queryable without requiring permission from the claiming party. An auditor requesting documents from the company being audited is reviewing curated evidence. Public accessibility means any party - regulator, journalist, competitor, customer - can verify the underlying record without asking.

Independent, persistent, accessible. This is what an onchain verification record provides. It is not what the current certificate system provides, by design.

Where DeCleanup Network Sits in This Market

DeCleanup Network is not a plastic credit issuer and not a registry. We are the verification layer - the ground truth infrastructure that any environmental credit system needs to meet the emerging standard.

The product is a four-layer verification pipeline: GPS-anchored photo capture stored on IPFS with content hashing → AI detection using YOLO on the TACO litter dataset → community verification by staked, slashable $cDCU holders → onchain record minted on Celo with photo hashes, coordinates, waste data, and verifier signatures. Every 10 verified cleanups, a Hypercert activity claim is issued - a living, structured impact record on AT Protocol that accumulates measurements and evaluations over time, usable directly in grant applications and funding decisions. The full technical breakdown is in The Proof Layer.

The platform also captures the distinction funders increasingly require: waste removed versus waste actually recycled. After the primary impact report, participants can submit a separate recyclables record - photo of sorted materials, approximate volume, and optionally a receipt from a registered recycling facility or a photo at the drop-off point. This closes the loop from collection claim to verified recycling outcome - the gap that has undermined the credibility of plastic credit markets.

The output is an onchain record that meets all three conditions above: verified by independent AI and community layers, persisted in tamper-resistant form on IPFS and Celo, publicly queryable by anyone with the wallet address or record ID.

A plastic credit that references a DeCleanup Network verification record is categorically more defensible than one that references only a registry certificate - because the underlying evidence is independently accessible, not just certified.

The Market Opportunity

The plastic credit market is approximately $462M in 2024, projected to reach $1.79B by 2031. It is growing because corporate demand for demonstrable plastic neutrality is growing, driven by exactly the regulatory pressure described above.

The market is simultaneously growing and credibility-constrained. The dominant verification model cannot produce what regulation now requires. The gap between what buyers need to claim and what existing infrastructure can prove is widening.

tRWI - tokenized real-world impact - is the category that addresses this gap. The same onchain rails carrying approximately $30B in tokenized real-world assets can carry independently verified cleanup impact. The infrastructure exists. What has been missing is a ground-truth verification layer - born onchain, not bridged from paper, not dependent on trusting a chain of self-reports.

For development finance institutions and results-based payment structures: dMRV-as-a-service is cheaper and faster than the alternative. A field verification visit costs more than running a hundred cleanups through the full DeCleanup verification pipeline. The disbursement condition "release funds when address X has Y verified cleanup records" is implementable today using the public API - no audit engagement required.

What Funders Can Do Now

If you fund cleanup programs: Your current grantees are producing real work with inadequate documentation. Requiring DeCleanup Network verification as a grant condition costs them nothing - the platform is free - and transforms their impact reports from PDFs into publicly auditable onchain records. The portfolio page at dapp.decleanup.net/impact/[address] is the impact report, live and independently verifiable.

If you buy plastic credits: Ask your supplier whether their verification methodology produces evidence that is independent, persistent, and publicly accessible. If they cannot point to publicly queryable onchain records per credit, their output does not meet what Directive 2024/825 requires. Compliance exposure sits with the buyer, not the issuer.

If you are building results-based payment structures: The impact API is public. A payment condition referencing onchain verification data is implementable without any ongoing relationship with DeCleanup Network. The infrastructure is available.

If you want to fund the network directly: The governance pool on Gardens is live, seeded in cUSD by a grant from Ethereum for the World, and allocating to verified cleanup proposals via conviction voting. Every cUSD that enters the pool is directed by $cDCU holders - people who have done verified environmental work - to proposals they have reviewed. The funding trail is onchain: pool address to recipient wallet, with cleanup records as the evidence layer. See the coordinator article for how proposals work.

The investor brief - market data, traction, token architecture, and funding pathways - is at decleanup.net/investors.

The Larger Shift

What is happening in environmental markets now is structurally similar to what happened in financial markets after 2008: a period of trust-based accounting is ending and a period of evidence-based accounting is beginning.

The difference is that environmental evidence - proof that a physical action happened in the physical world - is harder to produce than financial evidence. You cannot audit a beach cleanup with a spreadsheet. You need a verification system that produces evidence you do not have to trust.

That infrastructure is being built now. DeCleanup Network is the piece that handles real-world waste cleanup. It is open source, it is live, and it is available to any funder, organization, or institution that needs what it produces.

The question is not whether verifiable environmental proof will become the standard. The regulation has already answered that. The question is whether the organizations paying for environmental outcomes will have access to that proof when it is required.

Investor brief: decleanup.net/investors Protocol documentation: decleanup.net/litepaper · decleanup.net/toc · decleanup.net/sdg Get in touch: support@decleanup.net · Telegram · X · Farcaster

DeCleanup Network · Open-source · Built on Celo + Base · Information only, not a securities offering SDG 11 · 12 · 13 · 14 · 15

Now Prove It. first - it covers why this infrastructure exists and what governance means for people doing field work. This article picks up where that one ends: the practical mechanics of running a documented campaign from setup to funded proposal.

Set Up Your Account

Go to dapp.decleanup.net. Sign in with Google, email, or connect an existing wallet. Email and Google accounts have gas fees sponsored by the protocol for one year - no crypto setup required.

One decision to make upfront: are you logging as an individual coordinator, or setting up an organization profile that multiple team members can contribute to? If you want the second option, contact us before your first event - we'll configure it with you directly. Full campaign creation as a feature launches Q4 2026.

Phase 1 - Prepare

Everything in this section happens before you leave for the cleanup. Getting it right here determines the quality of your record.

Know what the submission form will ask for

The impact report form at dapp.decleanup.net covers these fields. Read them now so nothing surprises you on the day:

The basics - fill these from memory after the event:

Location Type - dropdown: beach, park, river, neighborhood, forest, etc.

Area Cleaned - in m² or ft²

Weight Removed - in kg or lbs (the form shows: 1 standard trash bag ≈ 2kg)

Bags Filled - count

Time Spent - hours and minutes

Waste Types - nine checkboxes, select all that apply: Plastic · Glass · Metal · Paper · Organic · Hazardous · Electronics · Textiles · Other

The fields that need preparation before the event:

Before photo - you can only take this photo before the cleanup starts. At this stage of the development, we ask only for one shot of waste-dense spot at your location. In the future, when our AI will compar your before/after pairs at the location level - we might ask to add additional photos or to be more specific, in order to raise the confidence score.

Contributors - participant wallet addresses or email accounts registered on the platform. These show the scale of your team effort and increase your credibility for funding. Help your teammates set up accounts before the event so you have their addresses ready. Note: adding contributors to your submission doesn't currently reward them with points in the system - anyone who wants their own impact history should submit separately.

Photo sharing license - required for Hypercert issuance. Decide in advance which license fits you or your organization. You can't skip this field.

The fields that enrich your record - pick thoughtfully, not hastily:

Environmental Challenges - tag what you observed: Heavy pollution · Illegal dumping · Wildlife impact · Water contamination · Soil contamination · Storm damage · Lack of waste bins · Air quality issues. Plus free text.

Prevention Suggestions - tag what could fix it: Install more waste bins · Regular cleanup schedules · Community involvement · Better waste management · etc. Plus free text. Especially useful if you're making a case to a municipality.

Prepare your documentation kit

Assign a documentation lead before you arrive. "You are the documentation lead for this event" - explicit, named. This one instruction prevents the after-photos from disappearing when everyone is tired and packing up.

Bring if possible:

A scale - even a luggage scale in a bag is enough. Weight data is more credible than bag estimates.

Bags in consistent sizes so your bag-count estimate is reliable.

A phone with GPS enabled and camera at full resolution.

If you're planning to recycle

Decide before the cleanup which materials you'll separate. The platform has a separate recyclables submission step after the main impact report - it's optional, but it significantly strengthens your record for ESG-focused funders. Preparing for it means:

Bringing separate bags or containers for recyclable materials (plastic bottles, glass, metal).

Knowing which recycling facility or drop-off point you'll use.

Keeping any receipts from the facility - they're the strongest evidence that material was actually recycled, not just diverted.

Phase 2 - Submit

Step 1 - Before photos (at the site, before you start)

Take before photos of the most waste-dense spot you plan to clean. Preferably submit from the physical cleanup site, not later at home: GPS is captured at submission time, and location at site is the geographic anchor of the record.

Step 2 - Run the cleanup

Normal operation. The documentation layer adds about 15 minutes total - 10 at the start, 5 at the end. Everything in between is yours.

Step 3 - After photos and weighing (at the site, before you leave)

Same locations as the before photos, same approximate angles. Weigh the collected waste or count bags. This is the moment most teams lose - everyone wants to go home. The documentation lead holds this until it's done.

Step 4 - Fill the impact report (dapp.decleanup.net/cleanup)

Now fill in everything the form asks for. The basics (location type, area, weight, bags, time, waste types) won't take a lot of your time, if you prepared. The richer fields (environmental challenges, prevention suggestions, contributors) take another few minutes and are worth it for the quality of your portfolio and your funding credibility.

Photo sharing license - required. Don't skip it. If unsure, choose the most permissive option you're comfortable with.

Submit. AI review runs automatically. Community verification typically completes within a few hours. You'll receive confirmation when the record is issued.

Step 5 - Submit recyclables (if applicable)

After the impact report submits, the platform offers a separate recyclables step. This is optional but meaningful - "removed from environment" and "actually recycled" are two different claims, and funders increasingly require the distinction.

If you separated recyclables during the cleanup:

Photo of the sorted materials - bags, boxes, or containers before handoff

Approximate amount - weight or volume

Receipt from recycling center if you have one - the strongest evidence that material was actually recycled, not burned or landfilled

No receipt? Upload a photo of the recyclables at the drop-off location - at the collection point, facility entrance, or designated bin. Location-verified photo is credible secondary evidence.

A record that closes the loop from collection to verified recycling is categorically stronger for ESG reporting. Corporate sustainability teams and development finance institutions distinguish between tonnage removed and tonnage recycled. Your record should reflect that distinction too.

What gets issued

Each verified event produces a permanent onchain record: IPFS-hashed photos, GPS coordinates, waste data, AI confidence score (coming soon), verification timestamp, verifier signatures, your wallet address and contributors.

The record lives at dapp.decleanup.net/impact/[your-address] - your portfolio page. Share this link with funders, municipalities, and partners instead of PDF reports. Every entry on that page is independently verifiable by anyone who visits it.

Every 10 verified cleanups, a Hypercert is issued - a living, structured impact record on AT Protocol that captures the full picture of your work: who, what, when, where, with all your cleanup records attached as measurements and evidence. Ten cleanups over six months is a track record. Twenty across two years is an organization with a verifiable impact history that no audit report can match - because it was produced continuously, in real time, by the work itself.

The compounding is the point. Every event you document now is retroactively strengthening every future grant application. The portfolio page is a live document - it grows every time you submit and verify. Send it to funders, municipalities, and partners instead of preparing fresh reports each cycle.

The governance dimension compounds too. Every $cDCU you earn is additional weight in the pool allocation decisions. As your record grows, your say over where funding flows grows with it. The people who will benefit most from the governance pool are coordinators who have been doing consistent, documented work - the sooner you start building the record, the more governance weight accumulates.

For NGOs: Existing Impact History

If you have been running cleanups for years with your own documentation - spreadsheets, photos, reports - get in touch. This post is about how it works - every layer of the verification pipeline, every infrastructure decision, every trade-off we made building a public goods protocol on Celo and Base.

This is for builders, technical readers, and anyone who wants to audit the claim before they trust it.

Two Platforms, One Verification Standard

The protocol runs on two networks with different entry points.

Phase 1 - Farcaster mini app. Lightweight cleanup logging via Farcaster frames and the Base app. Photo-based submissions, basic verification, $bDCU rewards. Optimized for reach - the lowest possible friction for a first submission.

Phase 2 - Celo full dApp at dapp.decleanup.net. Geolocation mapping, AI waste detection, Hypercert issuance, governance, and the full dMRV pipeline. Optimized for depth - every submission produces a record that meets verification standards.

Both platforms feed the same verification standard. The proof output is identical whether you submit from a Farcaster frame or the full dApp. The platform is the entry point; the standard is the product.

The Verification Stack

Every cleanup passes through four independent layers before it becomes an onchain record. No single layer is sufficient on its own. The combination is what makes the record defensible.

Layer 1 - Capture

A participant submits via the dApp: before and after photos, GPS coordinates captured at the physical location, waste category estimates across plastic/glass/mixed/organic, and a weight estimate in kilograms.

GPS is captured at submission time, not pulled from photo metadata after the fact. This matters: metadata can be edited, location spoofed at the app level. Submission-time GPS tied to the platform session is significantly harder to falsify.

Photos are stored on IPFS immediately on upload. The content hash is attached to the onchain record at mint time. The consequence: the photos cannot be changed after the record is issued without changing the hash, which breaks the link to the onchain record. The evidence is cryptographically locked at the moment of submission.

Stack: Supabase for backend - user profiles, submission queue, verification state, and the pipeline between capture and onchain issuance. Google Auth (OAuth 2.0) as an alternative login path to wallet connection.

Layer 2 - AI Detection

Before any human review, submissions pass through automated waste detection.

We use YOLO (You Only Look Once) object detection trained on the TACO dataset - Trash Annotations in Context, a labeled dataset of real-world litter across 60 waste categories. The model runs on submitted photos, detects waste objects, estimates type and volume, and produces a confidence score.

The confidence score serves two purposes: it provides an independent volume estimate comparable against the participant's self-report, and it flags anomalous submissions — images that don't match the declared waste type, photos that appear to be recycled from other sources, or claims where the AI estimate diverges significantly from the stated weight.

A high-confidence AI match isn't approval - it's a green light to human review. A flagged submission goes to additional scrutiny, not automatic rejection.

Stack: Ultralytics YOLO on the TACO dataset. Detection output feeds the verification queue with a confidence flag attached.

Note: full AI analytics will be available on Celo platform in Q3 2026, currently it's undergoing testing processes.

Layer 3 - Community Verification

AI detection is a filter, not a judgment. Every submission that passes automated screening enters a community verification queue.

Verifiers are $bDCU/$cDCU holders who have staked to join the verification layer. They review the before/after pair, the GPS location, the AI confidence score, and the weight estimate. They approve or flag with a reason.

Slashing applies for false approvals. Verifiers who consistently approve fraudulent submissions lose staked $cDCU. This keeps the verification layer economically honest without requiring central oversight - the incentives do the work.

This layer exists specifically for what AI cannot cover: local context, genuinely ambiguous submissions, edge cases that require human judgment about whether a cleanup actually happened. A beach that looks the same before and after because it was already mostly clean. A forest trail submission from a location where no trail exists. A weight estimate that's technically consistent with the photos but implausibly high for the team size reported.

Layer 4 - Onchain Record

A submission that passes both AI and community verification is minted as an onchain record on Celo mainnet. The record contains:

IPFS hash of the before/after photo pair

GPS coordinates as onchain data, not metadata

Waste category and volume

AI confidence score

Verification timestamp

Participant address

Verifier signatures

The record is public, permanently linkable, and queryable by anyone. Every 10 verified cleanups, a Hypercert activity claim is issued - a structured, living impact record built on AT Protocol (the same decentralized data layer as Bluesky). It captures who did the work, what was collected, when, and where. The 10 individual cleanup records attach as measurements and attachments, making the Hypercert progressively richer over time.

A Hypercert is a signed data record that lives on a Personal Data Server, portable across any platform that reads the protocol. Onchain tokenization for programmable funding is on the Hypercerts roadmap but not yet live; DeCleanup Network's cleanup records are already structured to support it when it arrives.

Account Abstraction - The Infrastructure Decision

The hardest problem in Web3 environmental tooling is not verification - it is onboarding. The people doing the most cleanups are not crypto-native. Requiring a funded wallet before a volunteer can log their first cleanup is a guaranteed adoption ceiling.

We built the Celo dApp with account abstraction as a core architectural requirement.

Pimlico provides smart account infrastructure and a paymaster on Celo. Participants never pay gas - the protocol sponsors all transactions through the paymaster. The first-time experience: open the app, submit a cleanup, see a reward. No gas prompts, no wallet funding, no network configuration.

The implementation required a deliberate choice. The standard path for account abstraction in consumer apps runs through managed services - Web3Auth, Privy, similar. These work well. Their production-ready scale plans run on a rate that is not affordable thus not viable for a public goods protocol with no subscription revenue. We did not use them.

Instead we built directly on permissionless.js - Pimlico's open-source library for constructing smart accounts without a managed service. Full control over the account abstraction layer, composable with any signer, no monthly platform fees. Gasless transactions, batched operations, sponsored gas - all available at the library level.

Google Auth (OAuth 2.0) provides the non-wallet login path. The wallet is created and managed through the smart account layer in the background. Wallet interaction surfaces only when a participant chooses to interact with governance or move tokens - until then, the experience is a standard web app.

The pattern is intentional: deferred friction. Capture participation first. Introduce custody complexity only when the participant is ready and motivated to engage with it.

Token Architecture

Two tokens. This is not a values statement - it is a logical requirement for the verification claim to hold.

"This cleanup is independently verified" means nothing if the verification pipeline is proprietary. Independent verification requires independent auditability. The code, the model weights, the smart contracts, the onchain records - all of it must be publicly inspectable for anyone to trust the output without trusting us.

The IPFS photo storage, the Supabase pipeline, the contracts on Celo and Base, the YOLO model - all public. Contracts verified on Celoscan and Basescan. Impact API public at decleanup.net/api/impact.

Open source also means composable. Any project in ReFi, DePIN, or impact accounting can build on top of DeCleanup Network verification without asking permission. The Hypercert output is readable by any ecosystem that supports the standard. ESG tools can query the API directly. Future certification layers can use our records as inputs.

This is the difference between a product and a primitive. A product you use. A primitive you build on.

You already know the problem.

You organize a cleanup. Twenty people show up at 7am. They spend three hours on a beach, a riverbank, a highway median. They fill forty bags. They are exhausted and proud and they go home.

A week later someone asks: did it make a difference?

And you have photos. You have a group chat full of sweaty selfies. You might have a spreadsheet with approximate kilograms. But you have no proof that holds up - nothing an institution can verify, nothing that qualifies for funding, nothing that travels beyond your community's memory of the day.

The cleanup happened. But in every system that matters - grant databases, carbon registries, municipal sustainability reports, ESG disclosures - it did not happen. There is no record.

This is not a documentation problem. It is a power problem. The people doing the most environmental work have the least say in where environmental money flows. Not because their work isn't real. Because it isn't legible to the systems that distribute resources.

DeCleanup Network is the infrastructure to change that. This is why you should join, what you should do, and what governance actually means for people like you.

What Has Changed

Until now, environmental proof has been produced by institutions. A company hires a third-party auditor. A registry certifies a project. The paperwork moves between organizations, and somewhere at the end of the chain, a credit is issued that represents something that may or may not have happened on the ground.

The people who actually picked up the trash were inputs to that system, not participants in it. They provided the labor. They did not get the proof. They certainly did not get the governance.

DeCleanup Network reverses this.

Every cleanup you do on the platform produces an onchain impact record - geotagged, timestamped, AI-reviewed, community-verified. The record is yours. It follows your wallet address. Every 10 verified cleanups, it accumulates into a Hypercert: a living, structured impact record built on AT Protocol that captures who did the work, what was collected, when, and where - growing richer as measurements and evidence attach to it over time. You can use it in grant applications, share it with funders, attach it to project proposals, or simply hold it as verifiable evidence of what you did.

Nobody issues it to you. You earn it by doing the work. The proof is yours.

Who This Is For

If you do cleanups

You are the foundation of this network. Everything else - the governance, the funding pools, the institutional credibility - is built on the premise that real people are doing real cleanups and that the record of those cleanups means something.

Here is what joining looks like in practice:

Go to dapp.decleanup.net. Connect a wallet or sign in with Google or email - no crypto experience needed, no gas fees. When you do a cleanup, take before and after photos on location. Submit them with your GPS coordinates and an estimate of what you collected. The AI reviews it. The community verifies it. An onchain impact record - Impact Product - is minted and it’s growing level by level. You earn network points for all the actions, even for sharing the link to the app and encouraging friends to join.

Upon earning points, you can claim $cDCU - not a points token, not a loyalty reward, but governance weight over a real funding pool. More on that below.

That is the loop. Do the work. Prove the work. Build the record. Hold the power.

If you organize cleanups

You are the multiplier. A single organizer who brings twenty people to a beach and runs a proper cleanup with documentation is worth more to the network than twenty individual submissions - because organized cleanups produce higher-quality evidence, cover larger areas, and can be linked to specific ecosystems and recurring impact over time.

DeCleanup Network is building coordinator tools specifically for you: campaign creation, team management, bulk submission review, aggregate impact reporting. If you run a cleanup program - monthly, seasonal, or event-based - the platform can generate a documented impact record for every event in your history.

This is what makes the difference when you go to a municipality and ask for support, or apply for a grant, or approach a corporate sponsor. You are not asking them to trust your word. You are showing them a verifiable, onchain record of every cleanup your community has done, with photos, coordinates, and independent verification attached.

That changes the conversation entirely.

If you run an NGO or community organization

You have been doing environmental work for years, possibly decades. You have impact. What you often lack is the proof infrastructure to make that impact legible to funders who increasingly require it.

The regulatory environment is shifting fast. EU CSRD is in force. Greenwashing bans are law. Results-based funding - where payment is conditional on verified outcomes - is becoming the norm, not the exception. Funders who used to accept annual reports and site visits are now asking for real-time, independently auditable evidence.

DeCleanup Network is that infrastructure. You do not have to build it yourself. You plug into an open-source protocol that produces the proof format funders are beginning to require - and you own the records it generates.

There is no fee to join. No platform lock-in. No proprietary database that holds your impact data hostage. Everything is onchain, open, and yours.

What Governance Actually Means

This is the part most people skip over. It matters more than anything else in this document.

Every action on the platform gets you points and constant activity increases your multiplier for $cDCU. When you hold 250 $cDCU, you have full governance voting rights over the DeCleanup Network funding pool on Gardens - a live pool of cUSD on Celo, seeded by an Ethereum for the World grant, will be distributed by conviction voting in early July.

Let's be precise about what that means.

The pool holds real money - $cUSD stablecoin. That money gets distributed to cleanup proposals. The proposals that receive funding are decided not by a committee, not by a foundation, not by donors - but by $cDCU holders voting with conviction.

Conviction voting works like this: you allocate your voting weight to proposals you believe in. The longer you support a proposal, the more conviction it builds. When conviction reaches the threshold, the pool releases funding directly to the proposal creator's wallet. No approval process. No grant committee. No waiting six months for a decision.

If you have done verified cleanups, you have $cDCU. If you have $cDCU, you have a say in which cleanup initiatives get funded.

This is not symbolic governance. This is not a DAO where token holders vote on protocol parameters that affect nothing in the physical world. This is direct resource allocation for physical environmental work, controlled by the people doing that work.

An organizer in Nigeria who has run four verified campus cleanups has more governance weight than a crypto fund that has never touched a bin bag. That is the design. That is the point.

Why Spreading the Word Is Part of the Work

Environmental impact scales with the number of people producing verified records. One organizer with twenty participants produces twenty impact records. Twenty organizers with the same participants produce four hundred. The network effect is real and the math is simple.

But there is something more important than the numbers.

The credibility of any verification standard depends on the breadth and diversity of who is using it. A cleanup protocol that only has participants in wealthy countries is not a global environmental standard - it is a niche tool for a specific community. A protocol with verified cleanups across Japan, Nigeria, Thailand, Mexico, Brazil, and Kenya is beginning to look like infrastructure.

Every organizer who joins from a new geography makes the network more credible to funders. Every NGO that plugs in their existing cleanup history adds weight to the verification standard. Every volunteer who submits their first cleanup is proof that the onboarding works for people who are not crypto-native.

When you spread the word - to your cleanup community, your NGO network, your local environmental group - you are not promoting a product. You are building the dataset that makes the verification standard trustworthy. You are expanding the governance base to include more of the people who should be in it.

The more diverse the $cDCU holders, the harder it is for any single actor to dominate the governance pool. The more verified cleanups in the record, the more credible the impact claims become. The more organizers running campaigns, the more funding proposals go into the pool - and the more money flows to real environmental work instead of paper certificates.

This is a network that gets more powerful the more people use it honestly. That is rare. It is worth building.

What to Do Right Now

If you do cleanups: Go to dapp.decleanup.net. Sign in with Google, email or connect your wallet. Do your next cleanup and submit it. The whole process from submission to verified record takes less than 24 hours. Your first $cDCU will follow shortly after.

If you organize: Email support@decleanup.net or reach us on Telegram. Tell us about your program - how often you run events, roughly how many participants, what kind of waste you're collecting, where you operate. We will help you set up a campaign with proper dMRV documentation from the start. If you have historical cleanup records, bring them - we are working on a process to onboard verified historical data.

If you run an NGO: The same applies. Get in touch. The more established your existing impact record, the more value we can add immediately. We want to be the proof layer for organizations that have been doing the work for years and have never had the infrastructure to make it legible at scale.

If you are already in a Web3 or ReFi community: You probably know five to ten organizations doing real environmental work with no onchain presence. They are the ones who need this infrastructure most and are least likely to find it on their own. An introduction from someone they trust is worth more than any amount of protocol marketing.

The Larger Picture

We are at an early moment in the history of verifiable environmental infrastructure. The tools to produce cryptographic proof of physical action exist. The onchain rails to carry that proof globally exist. The governance mechanisms to distribute funding based on that proof exist.

What has not existed until now is a protocol that assembles all of it into something a non-crypto-native cleanup volunteer can use.

That is what we built. It is open source, it is live, and it is yours to use.

The cleanups you have been doing for years already mattered. Now they can be proven, funded, and governed - by you, not by institutions acting on your behalf.

That is a different world. Come build it.

Start here: dapp.decleanup.net Read the full protocol: decleanup.net/litepaper Governance pool: gardens.fund Get in touch: support@decleanup.net · Telegram - X - Farcaster

We’re excited to speak with you today and welcome you as a first star of our story. Could you introduce yourself and tell us a bit more of how your journey into web3 started?

Yuichi:

Thank you for having me! My journey began with Vyvo, a health-focused platform. Vyvo had a system that rewarded healthy behaviors, such as exercise and proper sleep. Initially, Vyvo itself wasn’t directly involved in environmental protection, but through this platform, I was introduced to cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. I learned the basics of cryptocurrency, such as wallet security and how to avoid scams, but I also began gathering information externally to deepen my understanding.

My interest in environmental protection sparked when I learned about Cleanify, a dApp focused on environmental issues, through the partnership between VeChain and Vyvo. This led to environmental protection becoming a significant theme for me, and I decided to engage in promoting cryptocurrencies for good beyond the activities of Vyvo. My perspective shifted toward expanding environmental protection activities using various blockchain technologies, regardless of specific chains.

DeCleanup Network:

It’s interesting how your journey started with health and evolved toward environmental impact. What specifically motivated you to take action and get involved in cleanups?

Yuichi:

A major turning point for me was my encounter with HEM Japan. HEM Japan was originally a group based on Vyvo, focusing on “Health Eco Mining,” which combines health activities with environmental protection. Engaging with their activities heightened my interest in environmental protection, and the enjoyable experience of working in the community had significant meaning for me. This experience generated a strong desire to further expand my environmental protection activities.

https://x.com/8ooBFBLDKIW0i9L/status/1848054399597523225

DeCleanup Network:

You’ve certainly come a long way! How did your experience with cryptocurrency shape your involvement in projects like DeCleanup? Did you find it an overall satisfying experience to use different platforms and understand different tools and chains to get things done?

Yuichi:

As I deepened my understanding of cryptocurrency, I had opportunities to get involved with various blockchain networks and applications. I came across Cleanify through the partnership between VeChain and Vyvo, and I realized that multiple “X to earn” apps could coexist. This led to the concept of “X² to earn”, where you can simultaneously use multiple dApps to earn multiple rewards from a single action. I proposed this idea to the members of HEM Japan, and they immediately agreed. I then started teaching them how to use Cleanify. Since I had experience with various blockchain applications, I was able to remove the tech barrier and explain the basics. As a result, I was able to quickly explain the Cleanify platform to over 100 members of HEM Japan, allowing many participants to experience X² to earn.

During this process, I learned about DeCleanup and became interested in it. Although DeCleanup operates on a different chain, Arbitrum, I was drawn to its simplicity and user-friendly design. I aim to expand my activities by leveraging the unique features of each chain.

DeCleanup Network:

You’ve been instrumental in bringing members from the HEM Japan community and we already have 12 new wallets from Japan including yourself. As for DeCleanup, it has only been about one month since its introduction, but my goal is to expand its reach by the end of this year. DeCleanup is very easy to join, making it an ideal next platform for HEM Japan. While experiencing DeCleanup, I realized the potential for “X³ to earn”. DeCleanup employs the most simplified system I’ve encountered in dApps, making it easier for people to participate in environmental protection activities.

https://x.com/8ooBFBLDKIW0i9L/status/1848054399597523225

DeCleanup Network:

Looking ahead, how do you see the intersection of environmental cleanups and web3 technology developing?

Did you know that you can be rewarded for positive environmental actions? Small efforts by individuals or communities can make a significant impact. With DeCleanup Network, you can clean up the environment, capture your efforts, and earn, making every positive action count.

What is DeCleanup Network?

DeCleanup Network is an innovative project that uses blockchain technology to encourage and reward people for participating in environmental cleanup efforts. By documenting cleanups and sharing them through a dedicated dApp, participants can earn crypto assets as a reward for their contributions to a cleaner planet.

One of the goals is to create a network of cleanup communities worldwide, working under the same incentive program. This connected approach motivates teamwork and increases the impact of individual efforts, ensuring a unified, global effort toward environmental conservation.

Part of DeCleanup Network efforts will focus on campaigns for communities and individuals to create collective events each month, to give Earth at least one day a month when we take care of it. The campaign will promote individual or community acts on a daily basis and decentralized manner. More details will follow.

Why DeCleanup Network?

Our planet faces numerous environmental challenges, and DeCleanup Network aims to inspire people worldwide to take action. By providing rewards for cleanup activities, we incentivise individuals and communities to get involved in positive environmental actions. This initiative promotes environmental conservation and demonstrates the positive impact of blockchain technology in addressing global and local pollution problem.

How Does It Work?

Follow these steps to earn your first rewards:

Engage in Local Cleanups: Participate in or organize cleanups in your community.

Capture the Result: Take photos as proof of your cleanup efforts.

Get Rewards: Submit your photos and receive a DCU NFT that grows in value with your continued environmental contributions.

The DeCleanup Network rewards include dynamic, multi chain NFTs, with the first launch on the Arbitrum chain. Each reward level can be upgraded based on your ongoing contributions, reflecting your commitment and impact on the environment.

Our NFTs feature unique artwork themed around cleanup activities, representing cleanup progress through 10 steps. With each step, dynamic parameters change. For example, after the third cleanup, your NFT level is "newbie," with 30 DCU points and an Impact Value of 3.

The main characteristics of DCU rewards are DCU points and Impact Value. You can gain them by progressing through each level of cleanup proof and upgrading your NFT. The first NFT at the newbie level gives you 10 DCU points and has an Impact Value of 1.

Example of traits of the reward for the third cleanup

Why Do You Want to Have It?

DCU points will be used for $IMPACT token drops through the Impact Marketplace “Community and Ecosystem Incentives” program by EcoSynthesisX.
