We are excited to update you on DeOrderBook’s latest roadmap and strategic plans for the coming months. The DeOrderBook team is working hard to develop into a comprehensive set of options yield products, committed to advancing the use of easy-to-use and simplified options arbitrage strategies to fully unlock the added value of various on-chain value assets.

In this update, we will highlight our recent milestones, including the growth of the ecosystem and upcoming innovations, such as our upcoming launch of BTC V2, V1 products that support ETH and ETH restaking assets, and Earn products for users with low risk preferences. We will also share DeOrderBook’s decentralized governance plan and the corresponding ecosystem partner reward plan.

DeOrderBook is built on a vision: offering user-friendly decentralized finance (DeFi) options that cater to diverse risk preferences. Our team comprises seasoned Wall Street option traders, DeFi product experts, and experienced crypto market makers.We have visionary backers, such as IMO Fund, Layered, FundV, early investors of Scroll Blockchain, and 1st-generation Bitcoin OGs.

In the past 1 year, we securely operated DeOrderBook BTC Pool with constant upgrading, serving more than 7.2 million usd TVL.

DeOrderBook BTC Pools is a fully decentralized Option Yield protocol based on the Ethereum blockchain, providing DeFi users with dual-investment services on the BTC market.

Long-term BTC holders can choose several buy low and sell high strategies recommended by the DOB professional team to realize yield BTC in DeFi manner.

The design that is not based on oracles makes the DOB product completely decentralized, which ensures that DOB has been running safely for two years since its release.

Next Moves

As DeOrderBook continues to expand the breadth and richness of our option yield products, we are excited to share the next phase of our development. Here are the key developments coming soon:

• DOB Website V2

We plan to launch DOB Website V2 in Q4 2024. In the new website, we will further optimize the user experience so that old and new users in the DEFI field and traditional financial users can quickly get started after entering the product and understand the operating structure, risk assessment and arbitrage strategies of all products.

At the same time, we will further support the access of more blockchain assets, including more Ethereum second-layer blockchains, such as Scroll.

• BTC pool V2 mainnet

BTC Pool is our flagship option yield product, which aims to assist users to buy low or sell high BTC in a decentralized manner by providing simplified option arbitrage strategies similar to dual-currency financial management, thereby realizing the appreciation of users' BTC and fully releasing the appreciation potential of BTC.

In BTC Pool V2, users will be able to clearly and intuitively see different trading strategies corresponding to different maturity times, as well as the possible benefits and risks of trading strategies, and trade and manage their orders more efficiently.

At the same time, as the BTC ecosystem continues to develop, BTC Pool V2 will also iterate more versions to support more other derivative BTC assets in the BTC ecosystem.

• ETH pool V1 mainnet

BTC is good, but BTC DeFi is still early, so we move our eyes to ETH.

ETH has better DeFi ecosystem, more active Users, mature Infrastructure, our strategy is to

· Re-design an ETH friendly DeOrder Product

· Support Restaking/LRT underline assets, points, holders’ yield needs.

· Co-grow with ETH Ecosystem

We plan to launch ETH pool V1 mainnet in Q4 2024 or Q1 2025. ETH pool V1 mainnet will be a product similar to DeOrderBook BTC pool V2. It will provide users with options arbitrage strategies similar to dual-currency financial management using their own multi-chain ETH and ETH-derived restaked assets.

Due to the extremely mature ecosystem of ETH, ETH pool V1 will widely support multiple ETH second-layer blockchains, as well as various mainstream ETH restaking, derivative assets of LRT platforms, and provide users with more attractive options arbitrage strategies to help users increase the value of their assets and corresponding restaking points.

We will explain the details in detail later.

• DOB Earn ETH/BTC

At present, the BTC and ETH restaking ecosystems are very mature, and protocols such as Pendle have emerged that can help users lock in APY. This provides a foundation for us to innovate products and serve users with low risk preferences.

In the current popular restaking ecosystem, users are not only concerned about locking in high APY for their assets, but also hope to obtain stable points income from the restaking platform. Our goal is to protect these current income of users, and use option yield products to help users obtain higher APY without damaging the user's principal and main yield income.

The logic of our approach will also be very simple. Through the link with Pendle and other restaking protocols, users can lock in their APY and points income, and use part of their future income for Option Call/Put trading arbitrage.

We will explain the design of this product in detail later, and it is expected to be launched in Q1 2025.

This product will be very suitable for BTC/ETH/Stablecoin diamond hands, who also want to maximize risk free APY while keeping base APYs stable and determined.

• DOB Governance & Partner program

The ultimate dream of DeOrderBook is to create a completely decentralized options trading protocol, through which anyone, any other protocol, can fully release the value-added, risk hedging, and arbitrage opportunities of blockchain assets.

And a decentralized governance structure is the core support for this dream. To establish this governance structure, not only a platform-level token is needed for support, but also a fair and reasonable issuance mechanism. At the same time, a group of ecological partners can jointly own the DeOrderBook protocol and benefit from the DeOrderBook protocol together, which will be the foundation of all this.

We will announce more details by the end of 2024.

DeOrderBook, which launched on Aug 31. of this year, has reached over $700k in TVL with its very first set of options provided in its mainnet launch. As a humble crew of BUIDLers not backed by a big fundraise, CEXs, or KOLs: the DeOrderBook team was proud to achieve this feat without liquidity mining and is looking forward to reaching even greater heights as the protocol expands its core functionality and expounds on its grassroots marketing strategy.

On DeOrderBook, users can enter staking pools with $USDC (which can be entered into uHODL and uSNIPER pools) and $wBTC (which can be entered into bHODL and bSNIPER pools). SNIPER pools are more risky as it is BULLET token holders (those users which hold the tokens used on DeOrderBook to exercise options) who choose which collateral the user that entered the Option Pool gets back: either what they deposited or the countertoken exercised at the strike price. HODL pools are free of this risk, making them the perfect risk-free introduction to farming $DOB on DeOrderBook.

Our protocol does optionality without oracles, credit, margin, settlement, and is fully non-custodial — which makes it a risk-bound system where code is law as is the true DeFi ethos. We worked a model where tokenomics are embedded in the protocol — connecting option-writing with option-buying, fee-sharing, and the governance utility with our token $DOB. Yields on DeOrderBook are paid out on $DOB, which can further be locked onto the protocol for a portion of the protocol’s collected fees and a portion of BULLET tokens which represent the rights to exercise options.

SNIPER Pools: Aiming for the Pinnacle of Returns

From the onset, the DeOrderBook team envisioned a platform that offers unprecedented returns without compromising on security. With the launch of our SNIPER staking pools, we've realized this vision. Users can now tap into astonishing yields of over 200% vAPR. These rates, while impressive, are backed by the robust architecture of the protocol and a keen understanding of the traditional mechanics behind options. Entering SNIPER pools is as easy as visiting the DeOrderBook app, and starting off by minting HODL tokens on a 1-1 basis with supported cryptocurrencies with no fees. Minted HODL tokens can then be used to place a DeOrder (the protocol’s version of a limit order) with a chosen strike price and expiry date. Thanks to our dual-token architecture, users have the option of unwinding their DeOrders early which gives users unparalleled capital flexibility compared to anything else in DeFi today.

HODL Pools: Stability Meets High Yield

While SNIPER pools are making waves with their aggressive returns, our HODL staking pools offer a steadier and near risk-free experience, boasting up to 70% APR. It's a testament to DeOrderBook's balanced approach to DeFi, ensuring there's something for every risk appetite. There are currently two single-side staking pools for USDC (currently at >70%-ish) and WBTC (currently at 35%-ish) which are our lowest yield and lowest risk pools but offered by the protocol as an introduction to DeOrderBook and a way to farm $DOB with minimal risk.

The $DOB Dividend: Reaping the Dual Rewards

As mentioned above, yields on DeOrderBook are paid out in $DOB, our native governance token, and here's where it gets even more interesting. Users have the choice to lock their $DOB rewards back onto the protocol. Doing so doesn't just lock in value but unlocks additional benefits:

1. Fee-sharing: By locking $DOB back onto the protocol, users get to enjoy a share of the daily fees collected by DeOrderBook. It's a way to be continually rewarded for being an integral part of the DeOrderBook community.

2. The BULLET Raffle: On top of protocol fees, stakers also earn a share of the BULLET tokens generated every day. These tokens are not just another digital asset to hold; they represent a right. A right to exercise options within the DeOrderBook ecosystem, bringing forth an entirely new dimension of possibilities and earnings.To participate in this daily Raffle, users need to lock at least $1000 $DOB per “ticket” (valid for one automatic participation). If users cannot lock at least 1000 $DOB in one 24-hour epoch, whatever they manage to lock will carry over until their carryover balance + their in-epoch locking adds to 1000 $DOB or more.

Claiming BULLETs from the BULLET Raffle is open to everyone for a limited time only. Normally, claiming these rewards is limited to Gold Gerege NFT holders only: but for now, to celebrate the mainnet launch of DeOrderBook, it is open to all!

The biggest highlight of our Phase 1 mainnet launch plan: our dual-tier Gerege NFT Program . This is just the first of 3 compelling phases of our mainnet soft launch, each with its own set of highlights and surprises. But more on that later 😉

In the renowned Mongolian Empire, traders favored by the Khan were issued a 'Gerege': tablets that granted them free passage around the Empire and the right to trade freely. Borrowing from this rich history, DeOrderBook is introducing the Gerege dual-tier NFT program that unlocks the full potential of our protocol.

DeOrderBook isn't a typical NFT project, or even mainly focused on NFTs, but we fully believe in the power of the NFT ecosystem to boost innovation in all kinds of verticals in Web3.

The Gerege NFTs are designed to be more than just digital art; they offer additional revenue-sharing rewards, exclusive access to advanced features, and more exciting perks, which we'll reveal closer to our mainnet launch! Phase 1 will start off with the release of the Silver Gerege NFTs, with the Gold Gerege NFTs to come in the next phases of our launch.

Starting Strong with Silver Gerege

The Silver Gerege NFTs have been designed as a passport to elevated rewards and privileges within the DeOrderBook ecosystem. Each of these NFTs have unique on-chain properties like Level, which will be used by the upcoming core app to maximise fee-sharing rewards e.g. 0.3% per Level.

What’s In a Silver Gerege?

These unique Silver Gerege NFTs represent 10,000 unique Tiratore warriors styled with unique generative art. Each warrior starts at Level 1 and comes with their own backstory, look, and name. The initial cap on 10,000 units won’t be further increased without community involvement in the future.

Inspired by anime, cyberpunk, and classic shoot-em-ups, these NFTs feature unique Tiratore warriors—yield-hungry raccoon explorers led by the feisty space soldier Valor. As a bonus, every user that mints has a chance to mint one of 10 handdrawn one-of-ones that are buried in the NFT code! Each one-of-one even starts at Level 5!

Silver Gerege Pricing

To reward those that get into the DeOrderBook ecosystem earlier, the Silver NFTs will involve unique pricing mechanics with a 25% price increase every 300 mints. This multiplier is not expected to change, but the community can direct us otherwise.

Private Sale Fee and Guaranteed Buyback

One thing you will notice if you are careful is that there is a privateSaleFee in the contracts. This is our somewhat-crude response to the OpenSea versus Blur NFT marketplace wars aka "the royalty wars" because the one thing that was sacrificed was royalties i.e. the beating heart of the Web3 creator economy.

As Web3 creators ourselves, we not only support royalty enforcement but support the creator having control of that and will have more surprises on that very shortly, but for now suffice it to say we will be levying a fee on private sales or sales for marketplaces that do not enforce royalty collections… just not yet!

Locking $DOB: Unlocking Potential

When you lock your earned $DOB tokens back onto the DeOrderBook platform, you gain access to a share of the protocol’s revenue.

There are two elements to the DeOrderBook revenue-sharing program: with one part of rewards paid out in HODL tokens (which are the protocol’s collateral tokens) and another part of rewards paid out in BULLET tokens (tokens which represent the right to exercise limit orders on the platform).

What's in it for you?

As an eligible $DOB locker, you’ll receive a proportional share of the rewards pool. This rewards pool consists of 50% of all fees collected and 80% of BULLETs generated through DeOrders. However, only those that hold Gold Gerege NFTs under the Gerege NFT program (as mentioned above!) are eligible for BULLET claiming.

HODL tokens are hard assets that can be used within the DeOrderBook platform or redeemed for $WBTC and $USDC, providing true yield. Meanwhile, the $BULLETs you collect can be used for unwinding collateral, exercising options at a profit, or selling to other users at the BULLET Bazaar for additional yield.

Crypto markets are notorious for their extreme volatility, which can be both a blessing and a curse for investors. While some ride the waves of price fluctuations to make impressive gains, others shy away from the inherent risks, choosing to HODL and forgo potential profits.

But what if there was a way to not only survive the waves of crypto volatility: but ride them like a pro?

This is where DeOrderBook comes in, offering a solution that allows users to harness the power of volatility in a manner similar to the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) in traditional finance.

VIX: Taming the Fear Gauge

The Chicago Board Options Exchange's CBOE Volatility Index, known as the VIX, is a key indicator for market participants in traditional finance. It measures the expected volatility of the S&P 500 index over the next 30 days. DeOrderBook brings a similar approach to the world of cryptocurrency, providing a platform for users to capitalize on market volatility while managing their risk. It can be tempting to just sit and HODL on your crypto bags in times of market instability. Almost 25% of the total $BTC supply has sat inactive in wallets for at least five years .

But having a bunch of assets sitting unused in a wallet means a lot of wasted opportunities for greater gains. That’s where DeOrderBook comes in.

At its launch on Ethereum, DeOrderBook focuses on Bitcoin prices, supporting $WBTC and $USDC. By placing decentralized limit orders (DeOrders) on the platform, users can balance their long or short positions in Bitcoin.

While traditional finance often restricts advanced trading strategies to sophisticated investors, DeOrderBook offers a fully non-custodial platform with on-chain settlement and a user-friendly interface, making these strategies accessible to all.

Harnessing Volatility for Profit

DeOrderBook allows users to choose from a range of strike prices and expiry dates, determined through rigorous analysis by experienced quant traders. This enables users to construct a minimal-risk trading strategy without requiring advanced mathematical modeling or statistical knowledge.

Once users place a DeOrder, they immediately start earning rewards in the form of $DOB, the platform's native governance token. These rewards are continuously streamed until the DeOrder's maturity date, regardless of whether the limit order ends up in the money or not. DeOrderBook also provides a mechanism for early unwinding of DeOrders, ensuring users can maintain optimal capital flexibility.

Unlocking Further Rewards

$DOB rewards can be locked back onto the platform, allowing eligible users to earn additional rewards in the form of revenue-sharing paid out partially in 'hard cash' tokens (wrapped $BTC and $USDC) and partially in counterparty 'BULLET' tokens that can be used to exercise DeOrders.

We’ve been working hard to continue getting the product ready for our incoming mainnet launch and are excited to begin sharing the fruits of our labour with you in Phase II of our Open Beta!

What’s Phase II all about?

Where Phase I was about getting users to test out our app for the first time and collect basic feedback on the alpha version of DeOrderBook, Phase II is all about rewards.

This Phase is a giant thank you to those of you who aped into our unknown protocol (even if only just to try us out on testnet!) and to set you up for success and real-life incentives for earning on DeOrderBook when we launch on the Ethereum mainnet shortly.

With this objective in mind, we’ve put together the Order of Testers, a special role on the DeOrderBook Discord for users that have had their wallets verified and whitelisted in preparation for joining the next phase of the Beta. This is to ensure that our limited pool of incentives reaches active DeFi users who can best contribute to the growth of the protocol, as well as the growth of the community.

We’ve also put together a **Leaderboard **so that Beta users can compete with others to see whose testnet trading strategies are looking the juiciest! Users who are in the Order and get on the Leaderboard will also a little something special…

To all those who have previously signed up for Phase I of the Open Beta… we’ve refreshed your wallets and sent you a new batch of test tokens all ready to go, so get trading!

What is The Order of Testers?

The Order of Testers (or ‘The Order’) is a special group for beta testers that have passed the Collab.land verification process, ensuring that they have a wallet containing at least 0.005 WBTC. This helps us ensure that any launch incentives we release to the Order go toward real people who really use DeFi… not just a bunch of empty wallets used for short-term farming with no real intention to help grow the protocol.

Upon successfully getting whitelisted, a user will then be assigned a special Discord role designating them as “Order of Testers: Initiate”.

If Initiate-level users demonstrate enthusiastic participation in the Beta, through at least one of these achievements:

• getting a place on the Leaderboard or;

• participating in one of the team’s invite-only user interviews or;

• boosting the DeOrderBook Discord server

  Then they will be upgraded to another Discord role, designating the user as “Order of Testers: Officer”.

Officer-level users can expect to be rewarded upon mainnet launch for their contribution to DeOrderBook’s growth… so get trading and get whitelisted!

How do I join the Order of Testers?

On the Discord, check out the collabland-join channel as shown below.

Ensure that you have a wallet with a minimum of 0.005 WBTC in it, then continue the rest of the verification process. Once the process is successfully completed, you’ll officially be an Initiate of the Order of Testers!

To place one of these limit orders, or ‘DeOrders’ as they are known within the protocol: users must first mint their supported cryptocurrencies for free into HODL tokens. At its launch on Ethereum, DeOrderBook supports $WBTC and $USDC.

Users can then use their freshly-minted HODL tokens to place a DeOrder: generating SNIPER and BULLET tokens. If you missed our last article on SNIPER tokens, don’t worry: we’ll be explaining how SNIPER and BULLET tokens interact with each other as intertwined parts of each DeOrder.

SNIPER Tokens

SNIPER tokens represent the option writer obligation, while BULLET tokens represent the option buyer’s right to exercise. Each of these tokens is encoded with the user’s chosen strike price and expiry date.

The full claim to the original HODL tokens that were used in placing the DeOrder is contained with the SNIPER token: and it is this token that is distributed automatically to the user who has placed the DeOrder.

BULLET Tokens

On the other hand, BULLET tokens allow savvy market participants to execute your DeOrder in a decentralised fashion according to principles of economic rationality and game theory.

Unlike SNIPER tokens which go to the user when a DeOrder is made, BULLET tokens are sent to the DeOrderBook team when generated. 20% of these BULLETs are retained as fees by the team, while the remainder is distributed by a daily BULLET Raffle amongst eligible users who have locked the threshold amount of $DOB, the native governance token of DeOrderBook. $DOB is earned at a steady rate by users waiting for their DeOrders to reach the chosen expiry date.

The BULLET Raffle list is openly viewable for all users on the protocol, but claiming BULLET rewards is only available to those who hold a Gerege Gold NFT. The DeOrderBook NFT program will be further explained in the next section.

If a user locks 1000 locked $DOB within a 24 hour period, this meets the BULLET claiming threshold and entitles them to claim 1 ticket to the BULLET Raffle for that day. Tickets must be manually claimed and will expire if the right to claim is not exercised.

The larger the share of $DOB locked in the raffle, the more valuable the ticket will be — entitling the user to a larger proportion of BULLETs compared to users who have locked less.

Claiming BULLETs with Gerege Gold NFTs

DeOrderBook is launching its core product with a dual-tier series of NFTs entitled ‘Gerege’. Gerege NFTs are available for optional purchase for DeOrderBook users.

As possessing a Gerege once opened up the Mongolian Empire to wandering traders, holding Gerege NFTs opens up the full potential of the DeOrderBook platform to users.

Only users that hold a advanced-tier Gerege Gold NFT will be uniquely able to claim a share of BULLET tokens. Besides a host of additional perks and benefits granted to NFT holders, those users will also unlock full access to the functionality of the BULLET Bazaar, a P2P marketplace on the platform where users can trade BULLETs and utilize a special interface where pricing, sizing and order status can all be adjusted for maximum control over trading advantages.

At launch, Gerege Gold NFT holders will be able to to sell BULLET tokens at the BULLET Bazaar: allowing for exclusive benefits such as combining matching SNIPER and BULLET tokens to unwind DeOrders before the expiry date. Whitelisted addresses will additionally be able to buy BULLETs at the BULLET Bazaar.

This key advantage of access to BULLET tokens opens up an entirely new world of arbitrage opportunities and even more ways to profit on DeOrderBook.

SNIPER and BULLET: the elements of a DeOrder

In this article, we’ll be going into the specifics of what a DeOrder is, as well as introducing two new token types. Whenever a DeOrder is placed with the strike and expiry selected by the user, an equal amount of SNIPER and BULLET tokens will each be generated encoded with the user’s specified parameters.

Here, we’ll look more into SNIPER tokens, which represent the option writer’s obligation to honor the order if it reaches its target strike price before the chosen expiry date. Our next article will be covering the BULLET token, which represents the right to exercise options and adds another layer of both complexity and profit to using DeOrderBook.

So… what’s a DeOrder?

DeOrders are similar in concept to limit orders in that they allow users to 'buy the dip' and 'take profits' at their desired target prices. When you process a DeOrder, you receive SNIPER tokens, which can be staked for $DOB yield.

This means if your limit order hits: you're in the money! If it doesn't, you get your money back plus the $DOB yield. It's a risk-minimized way to earn on top of your core portfolio.

What is SNIPER?

SNIPER is a token that is generated from HODL tokens using DeOrders, with SNIPER tokens from each supported currency are further separated by strike and expiry.

At the time of writing, DeOrderBook supports $wBTC and $USDC, with these tokens generating $bSNIPER and $uSNIPER tokens respectively.

What is SNIPER used for?

DeOrder is the process that generate SNIPER tokens: users choose a limit price and an expiry date.

In a nutshell, DeOrders stake SNIPER tokens to earn $DOB rewards. $DOB rewards keep users incentivized to HODL, place DeOrders, and govern the protocol. Stay tuned for another article on what makes earning (and locking!) $DOB rewards an attractive bet in a volatile crypto market.

What are the SNIPER pools?

The DeOrderBook protocol has created nine sub-pools for users to enter for fixed amounts of $DOB as rewards. Each of these sub-pools has a preselected strike price and expiry date. At launch, these pre-selected strikes and expiries allow for liquidity to be concentrated into pools and simplify the process of placing DeOrders for new users.

Users are able to stake their HODL tokens into these pools to receive juicy yields… while $DOB rewards themselves can also be staked for further rewards in the form of revenue-sharing as well as BULLET token rewards.

HODL: HODL tokens are minted from supported cryptocurrencies, then can be used as collateral for the protocol's version of limit orders: 'DeOrders'

$DOB: The native governance token of the platform, earned at a continuous rate as placed DeOrders mature. Can be locked for rewards

SNIPER: An option writer obligation token, generated in tandem with BULLET tokens when placing a DeOrder.

BULLET: An option right token, generated in tandem with SNIPER tokens.

In this article, we'll start off by explaining HODL tokens.

Introducing HODL tokens

Time to introduce the very first step of the process towards becoming a DeOrderBook user: the HODL token.

Users need to mint HODL tokens from supported cryptocurrencies to start using DeOrderBook. Minting is done on a 1-1 basis with no fees involved... just make sure you have enough to pay for gas!

Minting HODL Tokens

To start off with DeOrderBook, simply and freely mint HODL tokens with any supported currency on a 1:1 basis. For example, you will mint $bHODL tokens with your $WBTC, while your $uHODL tokens will be minted with $USDC.

Once you have your HODL tokens in hand, you can choose to either: a) stake HODL directly or b) use HODL to mint SNIPER tokens.

Staking HODL tokens is already able to give users a basic APY on their assets right away, but the real fun begins when users start placing DeOrders.

DeOrderBook 101

DeOrderBook is a fully decentralized protocol where users can earn while they simply hold their favourite tokens, place limit orders, or take part in simplified optionality.

By removing oracles from its protocol design, DeOrderBook has removed a key point of vulnerability that has been directly responsible for more and more protocol hacks over the last few months.

So... how exactly does everything work?

How It Works

In a nutshell, the DeOrderBook solution revolves around the four core token types that make up its ecosystem, each with their own important associated actions.

HODL:

To enter the DeOrderBook ecosystem, users must first mint HODL tokens from supported cryptocurrencies. HODL tokens can then be used as collateral to back DeOrders, which are essentially limit orders (on steroids!).

$DOB:

The native governance token of the platform, earned at a continuous rate as placed DeOrders mature. $DOB can be locked back onto the platform for rewards in the form of revenue-sharing and BULLET tokens.

SNIPER:

An option writer obligation token, generated in tandem with BULLET tokens when placing a DeOrder. Can be combined with matching BULLETs to unwind orders at any time before expiry date.

BULLET:

An option right token, generated in tandem with SNIPER tokens. These are awarded to eligible $DOB lockers, and have the unique property of being able to exercise DeOrders. Tradable at the BULLET Bazaar.

A decentralized society is a free society.

Oracles: An Obstacle to Decentralization

Here at DeOrderBook, we are long-time believers in this dream of decentralization. As crypto investors and builders ourselves, we know firsthand how risky crypto investments can be. That's why we've designed our protocol to operate completely free of oracles: what we believe to be one of the biggest and most underrated risks in DeFi today.

Oracles and the Blockchain

As secure and transparent most blockchains may be, they still have to communicate with legacy Web 2.0 systems to send and receive data. That's where oracles come in: entities that connect blockchains to the outside world, tirelessly sending information to smart contracts to execute on. Types of data that oracles might send include payment completion information, current token prices, outcomes of bets on horse races or political elections... the list goes on.

Smart contracts operate on-chain, while real world events and data points happen off-chain. Yet, relying on oracles as a bridge to communicate between the real world and the blockchain make it frighteningly easy to manipulate existing systems if you know what you're looking for.

Oracles are Easy Targets for Hacks

Centralized oracles

The typical blockchain oracle is centralized, making it an easy target to manipulate smart contracts and the data they rely on. Let's take the example of the classic man-in-the-middle attack. Alice thinks they're talking directly to Bob, but unbeknownst to her her messages are being intercepted in the middle and changed before being sent on to Bob; and vice versa. These types of hacks are disturbingly common even in the brave new world of DeFi. CoinTelegraph estimated that in 2022 alone, oracle hacks led to $54 million in stolen funds.

Let's take a quick look at just a few recent oracle-related hacks:

Mar 2023 Tender.Fi exploited with price oracle glitch The white-hat hacker reveals a vulnerability by borrowing $1.59 million worth of assets... and depositing 1 GMX token (value around $71) as collateral.

Feb 2023 BonqDAO hacked with price oracle hack $120 million stolen through manipulating token prices, and triggering liquidation of protocol troves

Dec 2022 Lodestar Finance hacked through price oracle 6.9 million in funds stolen as a hacker manipulates token prices through the oracle, then 'borrows' the entire liquidity of the protocol.

Decentralized Oracles

But wait, some naysayers might say. Aren't there also decentralized oracles available nowadays, such as Chainlink?

It's true that decentralized oracles can increase the reliability of the information fed to smart contracts; aggregating data from multiple sources rather than relying on just a single point of potential failure. But though it's an improvement on the traditional model, decentralized oracles are still not fully on-chain and still cannot be fully protected by the typical security and transparency offered by public blockchains.

It's clear: reliance on oracles means putting users in a position where their funds are at risk. They say history is written by the winners... it's not a stretch to say that those who write the data get to win too.

DeOrderBook, DeFi's first truly decentralized optionality protocol, is gearing up for its soft launch on the Goerli testnet: coming up this week on the 15th of March, 2023!

Our Soft Launch

During the soft launch, users will be able to sign up for an Open Beta on the Goerli testnet: allowing them full access to the planned first release of the DeOrderBook protocol.

Upon sign-up, users will be sent test tokens by the team and invited to give their thoughts on the current state of the protocol.

Users will be able to trade on DeOrderBook, participate in UX and/or marketing interviews, and join trading competitions... all in the comfort of knowing that it's all fun and games with Monopoly money (at least for now!)
