TLDR: DinnerDAO Season Two is open for business: memberships starting at 0.3 ETH for diners in NYC, SF, LA, Boston, Austin, Portland, DC, Miami and Montreal. Season Two is from Mid-April to August 30th and includes six intimate dinners and city-wide Dinner Drops. Funds raised will go towards organizing dinners and supporting specific initiatives.

DinnerDAO started in summer 2021 as a way for people in web3 to share meals and make friends.

Season 1 was all about breaking bread, swapping stories, and going from URL to IRL. Diners in groups of eight pooled funds in multisig wallets, voted on Discord and Snapshot and ate delicious meals together. There was a lot of interest, but we had a few kinks to iron out in terms of onboarding members and documenting our processes. We know that web3 tools have a steep learning curve but WAGMI in the end. As we barrel into the metaverse, we’re ready to pass the breadsticks and launch Season 2. We’ve made it easier for people to join and find other members to dine with. We’re excited about offering different event formats to accommodate various interests. We might even have a few amuse-bouches up our sleeves.

ICYMI: DinnerDAO gets people together for food, using web3 technologies. It's silly and fun and anyone can run one. Membership is open to anyone who holds the Season NFT. Members vote on when to meet, where to eat and what to talk about. Dinners range from intimate and informal (8 people at a restaurant) to unique and experiential (seasonal collabs) but you can expect yummy goodness at least once a month.

How it Works

Anyone can join the DinnerDAO discord to stay up to date for events, vote on future cities, and participate in general discussions.

Anyone can purchase a Season Pass NFT (supply is limited) and become a member.

After purchasing a season pass NFT, members will onboard through a token-gated discord and get assigned to a table of 8 members in their city. In order to build community and minimize logistical overhead, table assignments are for the entire season. Tables can self-organize however they wish to plan dinner dates and locations. More details below and in the FAQ

Dinner Tables

Dinner tables are groups of 8 members in the same city. Tables are randomly assigned and meant to last for the entire season.

Dinner Table groups decide and vote on when/where to eat. Monthly dinners are encouraged but your table can choose how to best allocate funds (for example, cheaper dinners weekly or fewer dinners at high end restaurants).

Each table will have approximately $4,200 per season in funds ($700 per month, $90 per person per monthly dinner). These totals do not include gas fees for transactions.

Any expenses over $4,200 per table have to be paid out of pocket, and any funds left over at the end will be recycled into the main treasury to fund larger events, cover operational expenses or support specific initiatives.

Table Leads

Each table should nominate a Table Lead to manage funds and pay for group meals from the shared funds. Each table may decide how they’d like to handle paying for and getting reimbursed for dinner.  We propose nominating the Table Lead after the first dinner in order to ensure your Table Lead is trustworthy and reliable. More details below and in the FAQ.

Each member can only be part of one table at a time (unless they hold multiple NFTS, in which case they can be in one table per NFT.)

Dinner groups are encouraged to post a photo after each group meal in Discord because “the proof is in the pudding!”

Each city shall have its own Discord channel so members can keep in touch with friends made at previous dinners.

Dinner Drops

Dinner Drops are one-off city-wide events open to all DinnerDAO members.

During Season One we partnered with Friends With Benefits for a five course Vietnamese experience alongside live music, sang together at a karaoke pizza party, hosted a pasta workshop and ate tacos at ETHDenver.

Members can use their Season Two Pass to vote on upcoming Dinner Drops. Some Drops will be free dinner, others will be an additional price with DAO members receiving early access before the general public.

Gift Memberships

DinnerDAO has set aside 88 memberships to be gifted at the discretion of DinnerDAO. If you would like to be considered for a gifted membership or nominate someone, please fill out this form. Please note, recipients of gifted memberships will still need to cover the gas fees and associated costs for minting the DinnerDAO NFT. These gifted memberships are designed to increase access to Web3, particularly for anyone who:

• is new to web3

• from the restaurant, service or hospitality industry

• has interest in web3 but lacks the financial means to experiment and explore the technology

• brings unique and valuable perspective to the DinnerDAO community

How did we decide on cities?

Based on #claim-your-location in Discord, NYC, LA, SF, Austin, Miami, DC are the highest voted cities. Boston and Portland were cities included in Season One and as such rolled over. New cities will be added in future seasons based on demand.

How are memberships distributed?

• 704 total memberships available for Season 2.

  • 616 memberships go on sale to the public in March

  • 88 memberships are gifted at the discretion of DinnerDAO organizers to DAOs focused on inclusivity. More details will be made available after launch.

What if I don’t like my assigned table?

Based on lessons learned from Season One, people really enjoyed the opportunity to build friendships over the course of several dinners. It creates accountability, community and minimizes logistical overhead of re-assigning tables each month. However, if for whatever reason, your table isn’t quite clicking (it happens, we’re only human!), there will be a meta-channel in Discord where you can work with City leads to get reassigned.

Late this summer, Dinner DAO started as a fun experiment and proof of concept. The idea was simple: create a dinner club for online friends to meet IRL, structured as a DAO.

Here’s how it worked.

• 8 NFT memberships were created using Unlock Protocol

• Each NFT was priced at .1 ETH. (At the time, this was roughly equivalent to ~$300 to cover monthly dinners for one person for the rest of the year)

• The ETH from membership NFT sales were pooled into a transparent collective treasury.

• By owning a membership NFT, each person was able to access private Discord chats, as well as vote and create on dinner proposals using Snapshot.

• Dinners were organized and purchased using USDC via a Coinbase debit card. Then, the treasury reimbursed the member in ETH.

In many ways, it was about as simple as a DAO can be. The object was focused, narrow, and humble. We just wanted to get dinner with frens.

How it started

The first group was set up in NYC. Members could purchase a membership on this makeshift website:

We made decisions together

We set up a voting strategy in Snapshot that allowed for our membership NFTs to be used for voting. This gave us a space to make official decisions, although most decisions were made through informal consensus in our group chats.

We had dinners

We had fancy dinners, we had low-key dinners, we had in-home dinners, and even a private pasta workshop! The benefit of assembling into smaller groups was that each group could determine its own vibe.

We became bicoastal

The first Dinner DAO was made up of a group of eight people in the NYC area. Then, Amber Case formed another chapter across the land in Portland. Shortly after, two more chapters formed in Los Angeles. Then, a second group in New York formed.

Interest grew

Word got out of what we were doing and we were mentioned in a few tweets, blogs, and newsletters, which brought more amazing people into our Discord. Although we weren’t ready to fully scale up membership yet, we set up a bot that allowed people to share where in the world they were with an emoji reaction. Hundreds of people reached out.

We had dinners with other DAOs

Our first joint dinner took place in December with the FWB local NYC chapter. We had a private meal at Auxilio, a space focused on resourcing & supporting queer, Black, trans, and Indigenous communities of color in NYC. There was an incredibly talented cellist performing too!

We made frens

Sometimes, it really is about the frens you make along the way. The best outcome of Season One was the meaningful IRL friendships and connections we made.

Lessons

It turns out that getting eight people together is pretty easy, but scaling a globally coordinated dinner club has unique challenges and takes some work! Here are some ways we can improve:

Onboarding

We weren’t prepared for the amount of interest in the group. Our onboarding experience for newcomers to the Discord left much to be desired. We’ll be focusing on creating a better experience with more clear information on how Dinner DAO works and how to join.

Documentation

We intentionally didn’t have too much formalized structure for the first season. As we develop more systems to help us coordinate more broadly, we’ll want to develop good documentation.

Opportunities

It’s clear that there are some fun opportunities ahead for Dinner DAO! This could include pop up events, larger events for all members, and creative partnerships. It would be incredible to always know a group of people in other cities to meet with while traveling.
