In this article we will look at four protocols that achieve token streaming and token swapping:

• Sablier and Superfluid, for streaming

• Ricochet and Aqueduct, for continuous swapping

1. Sablier: https://sablier.finance/

Sablier allows users to open up continuous payment streams for tokens over a fixed period of time. At the start of the period, the sender deposits all the tokens in the Sablier smart contract. During the streaming period the recipient can make partial withdrawals. At the end of the period the recipient can withdraw all the funds.

For example, 1000 USDC can be streamed to someone over a one month period. The sender will deposit 1000 USDC at the start, and the recipient can withdraw USDC amounts increasing over the month to 1000 USDC at the end.

2. Superfluid: https://app.superfluid.finance/

Superfluid allows tokens to be wrapped into "Super Tokens" which can be continuously streamed from wallet to wallet. Balances update second by second, an impressive sight in Metamask. Senders can initiate streams of the super-token with only a small deposit and a small buffer, usually worth a few hours of flow. The sender is responsible for keeping a positive balance, otherwise they get liquidated and lose their deposit. Superfluid streams are open ended; an extra transaction is required to stop or modify the stream.

For example, sending 1000 USDC per month can be achieved by first swapping 42 USDC to 42 USDCx (the super-token), and then starting a USDCx stream to the recipient, making sure to top up from time to time.

3. Ricochet: http://ricochet.exchange/

Ricochet enables decentralised semi-continuous exchange between two tokens, e.g. high precision DCA investing. A user sends a Superfluid stream of token A into the Ricochet contract. Every 20 minutes or so, the contract uses Sushiswap to exchange token A accumulated from all users for token B, which is then credited back to these users using a Superfluid Instant Distribution. There is some gas cost to these regular batch swaps, and Polygon is used for the low gas environment. At the moment token pair listing is permissioned, since the Ricochet team need to operate a bot to do the regular swaps.

Example usage of Ricochet would be a user streaming 100 USDCx per month to Ricochet, and receiving back frequent small quantities of ETHx, which gives them an accurate DCA strategy.

4. Aqueduct: https://aqueductfinance-app.vercel.app/

Aqueduct enables decentralised continuous exchange between two tokens, using Superfluid technology. To exchange token A for B, a user streams a fixed rate of token A into Aqueduct, and the protocol streams back to them a rate of token B depending on the current exchange rate. The ratio between total incoming streams of token A and token B determines the exchange rate. To become a liquidity provider, just stream in both token A and token B. In fact, there is a continuous spectrum between traders who supply only one token and pay fees, and LPs who supply both tokens in equal values and receive rewards. Aqueduct holds zero user funds, which is refreshing in an age of smart contract hacks. Interestingly, continuous swaps might help eliminate some forms of MEV such as sandwich attacks. Aqueduct is currently in testing on Goerli, and the roadmap includes permissionless listing of token pairs, a strategy that worked out very well for Uniswap adoption.

Summary

Decentralised protocols exist to stream and swap tokens. One combination to keep an eye on is Superfluid + Aqueduct which, given sufficient liquidity, achieves a perfectly continuous DCA strategy whilst eliminating some aspects of MEV.

ETH has gone deflationary

At time of writing, -37 ETH have been issued since merge date (15th Sept 2022) making ETH a deflationary cryptocurrency, and ultrasound money compared to Bitcoin’s “sound money”. This is because the majority of transaction fees are burned in Ethereum, which now has completely offset the issuance to ETH stakers.

ETH issuance had been hovering at +1000 to +2000 from merge for the last couple of weeks, but the insolvency of FTX combined with a 600 gwei base fee spike has made ETH deflationary at last.

FTX insolvency and Binance buyout

Another centralised exchange has bit the dust in 2022, in this case FTX, with the value of the FTT token plummeting from $22 to under $6, and many users’ funds trapped. There has been an offer from CZ of Binance to buy FTX, we’ll see how that goes. However will user deposits be protected 100%? Another case study for the importance of self-custody of crypto funds, using a wallet like Metamask or Rainbow. “Not your keys, not your crypto”.

Overline Network and Open Router

This was presented by a group member. This project is doing a few different things. Starting off with viral “oLand” NFT sales in the metaverse, its aim is to bootstrap a mesh network using a physical “LoRa” (long range) wireless connectivity device. This device weighs around 150g, can be carried in the pocket, and promises a range of approx 1 to 8 km in urban and rural environments respectively.

Wealth preservation in difficult times

Question from attendee: “What are the best ways of protecting your wealth during times of economic downturn, inflation, war, and climate change?”. We focused in particular on the event of a destructive war, which may be the worst case scenario. Some opinions discussed from those present:

• Assets

  • Crypto - ETH + yield, also BTC – as long as digital devices are functional and networked – as long as the internet is still working.

  • Farmland

  • Rental property (risk of property rights not being respected)

  • Gold and jewellery (risk of being seized)

  • Food (rice, products with long shelf life)

  • Keep some in cash, USD and a few more large currencies. Ideally with yield (bank / blockchain). VND can get 8.4% per year. But this is with smaller banks who have smaller balance sheets and more risk. Timo – is a bank app - lock VND for 18 months for 5%+ APR

  • Premium alcohol! High end whisky, fine art (can be difficult to find a buyer)

  • $300,000 Hermes handbag for walking wealth across a border

• General tips

  • Diversification

  • Only invest what you’re willing to lose

Damian Hirst has burned $10M of artworks to “turn them into NFTs”. Group discussed whether this is a good idea, and whether digital art has the same value as the physical art which it represents, and which was destroyed in the process?

We also talked about Tascha’s Destroyed Diamond NFT, and whether the NFT of a diamond holds the same value as the original diamond itself. Although Tascha bought the diamond for $5k and sold the NFT for around $11k, which appears to vindicate her thesis that the value of the diamond transfers to the NFT, was this really due to the inherent value inside the NFT, or the hype and publicity surrounding this stunt?

1. How to invest more safely in blockchain? Ideas from the group:

• Buy fully collateralised stablecoins (USDC, DAI, USDT) and invest them in protocols with yield (we looked at Polynomial Protocol: earn.polynomial.fi) – since downside of a hack is 100%, choose protocols carefully and perhaps spread over a few different protocols

• Buy only the largest cap cryptocurrencies (ETH, also mentioned were BTC, MATIC, SOL, XRP) – can buy slowly via DCA (Dollar Cost Averaging) to reduce risk further. You can find out more about large cap crypto coins on Coin Gecko: www.coingecko.com

• Stake ETH for even more gains – liquid staking tokens include RETH (Rocket Pool), STETH or WSTETH (Lido) – or home staking (see Hopr Dappnode below)

• Avoid dog coins or meme tokens! These have only speculative value, they will pump, and when the market runs out of “greater fools” then they will dump

• Avoid small cap tokens which have huge VC holdings which will get dumped on the market in future

• Most NFTs are highly speculative and are going to zero, avoid overinvesting in any NFT project

• Safe way of investing in NFTs: find a free mint, and sell at floor price on Opensea or Quix (or other market place)

• Safe(r) way of investing in dog coins etc – only use a small percentage of portfolio that you can afford to lose

Reddit has released their new “digital collectibles” and they are proving very popular! It was a free mint, but they’ve been speculated on and today’s floor price is over 1.3 ETH! Apparently in the past NFTs have been very unpopular on Reddit, but by rebranding to “digital collectibles” apparently the community now loves them. New features on Ultrasound Money website

The Ultrasound Money website reports on the progress of the ETH asset to becoming deflationary. New features have been added, such as viewing Ethereum base fee chart over 1, 7, or 30 days. Interesting patterns of daily and weekly gas fee spikes emerge! Great tool for timing transactions during the day or week to get lower fees.

Solana / Mango Markets hack

Mango Markets on Solana got hacked for $100M. The attacker manipulated the price of the native token $MNGO upwards, and then used $MNGO to take out (under)collateralised loans. The same native token was used in a governance hack where the attacked voted on the Mango protocol to make a very generous 40% settlement with themselves! (10% bug bounty is widely considered by the community to be a reasonable settlement for a hacker to be considered “white hat”.)

Optimism Quests

We looked at the Optimism Quests website where users can obtain 18 different free NFTs by using 18 different protocols on Optimism. The user remains in control of the funds throughout, approximately $200 to $1000 will be needed to complete all of the tasks to get the NFTs, it might cost up to $50 gas. Highly recommended for people to onboard into using Optimism, an Ethereum Layer 2 (rollup). Potentially those with most of the 18 NFTs might be eligible for a future $OP airdrop, if Optimism community decide to go that route.

Splat By Devotion NFT

A group member suggested we look at Splat By Devotion NFTs. These were inspired by someone throwing tomato soup on a Van Gogh painting at a physical gallery. For the Splat NFTs, the idea is you can splat any other NFT with your virtual soup. This makes Splat a derivative NFT (an NFT of an NFT) – very interesting concept! Chainlink and Oracles

We discussed the need for external price feeds to be brought into smart contracts, and that an “oracle” is the recognised way of doing this, e.g. for a smart contract to have access to the GBP/USD price feed from the real world. The leading oracle network is Chainlink, which aims to provide feeds for all kinds of external data in a decentralised and secure way. Smart contracts can pay Chainlink contracts in the $LINK token to access the oracle data. Good oracles help prevent hacks of decentralised finance apps:

Metamask

We had crypto newcomers attending who had not used a wallet before. These types of discussion sessions are great for helping people to onboard. Celsius breach of privacy

Celsius published a 14,000-page document detailing every user's full name, linked to timestamp & amount of each deposit/withdrawal/liquidation:

This type of breach of privacy is a result of giving a centralised custodian a mass of personal information, and it then going bankrupt and dealing badly with said information. Hopefully decentralised services can fix this, by not requiring the personal information in the first place.

Glossary

POAP – Proof Of Attendance Protocol, free NFT for attending an event

NFT – Non Fungible Token, a unique token people can hold, transfer or sell. Uses the ERC721 standard.

Token – like a private currency on the Ethereum blockchain, all (fungible) tokens are the same and can be held, transferred, or swapped. Uses the ERC20 standard.

Oracle – a method for getting real-world data onto the blockchain for smart contracts to consume

Smart Contract – a program on a blockchain which controls the flow of digital assets, e.g. a lending protocol which automatically gives interest to deposits.

PoW – Proof of Work, miners use a lot of electricity to secure a blockchain by making a lot of calculations such as hashes, to try and find a hash with unusual properties such as many leading zeros

PoS – Proof of Stake, validators stake their coins in order to participate in making new blocks on a blockchain, getting rewards for good behaviour, or slashed for bad behaviour, as defined by the code of the protocol.

Degen – a “degenerate” gambler, someone who buys small market cap NFTs or tokens, and tries to “flip” them for a quick buck. Usually loses money, unless lucky.

7 Bored Apes stolen

7 Bored Apes were stolen from a hardware wallet recently. This was possible because the user signed setApprovalForAll (a standard NFT smart contract call) to a fraudulent website:

First Ethereum deflationary week under PoS

Ethereum has had a deflationary week! Base fee has increased from around 5-10 gwei (inflationary) to over 20 gwei (deflationary – cutoff is 15.3 gwei). This is because a project called “Xen Crypto” is causing a lot of transactions on mainnet – people are minting coins for free, and paying gas to do so. Xen Crypto is likely a Ponzi scheme, time will tell.

Binance Bridge hacked for $560M

Binance Bridge has been hacked for 2 million BNB, which is over 560 million USD! This was due to a hack in the Binance Bridge, where a bug in the code was exploited to convince the bridge to send 1 million BNB twice. The centralised Binance Smart Chain (BSC) was taken down for a period of time to prevent the attacker converting their ill-gotten loot into decentralised currency such as ETH on Ethereum, which cannot be stopped or taken down.

Demo: Hash functions

The Binance Bridge hack was possible due to a bug in how the bridge handled data hashing. We discussed hash functions, and how changing even the slightest bit of data in a string will completely change the hashed string. We tested this out here:

Dumping tokens such as USDCW on Ethereum PoW

We discussed dumping ETHW (which is ETH on Ethereum PoW chain) by sending it to centralised exchanges, or using the “pow.dump.today” site. We also discussed how to exchange USDCW (USDC on the worthless PoW chain) for ETHW, using the Uniswap V2 contract on the PoW chain here:

Here we can see 1,485,801,184 USDCW and 950 WETHW, so it should be possible to exchange 1,564,000 USDCW for 1 WETHW, currently worth $8. The WETHW can be unwrapped to ETHW, and then sent to a centralised exchange for sale to ETH.

To perform the swap: go to Contract, then Write Contract, then Connect to Web3, then use swap function on smart contract. Homework is to work out the correct inputs!

This technique can be used to dump any worthless ETHPoW tokens using any remaining liquidity. Each tokens has a Uniswap V2 pool on ETHPoW which has the same contract address as the one on Ethereum mainnet. Other swappers such as Sushiswap can also be used.

NFT bridging

We had a question about how to transfer NFTs between Ethereum and its Layer 2 rollups (Optimism, Arbitrum, etc). Native bridges don’t seem to support NFTs yet. We expect the NFT infrastructure to be built in the next 6-18 months for this, currently Ethereum mainnet still has a lot more liquidity for buying NFTs, so may still be the best place to go. However now OpenSea supports Optimism and Arbitrum, this may change soon!

The Macro

We talked about the macro-economic environment in the world today.

Summary: it is bad!

• 10% Inflation (approx)

• Fertilisers – can’t be shipped from Russia and Ukraine

• Gives rise to food insecurity – hunger in poorer countries

• Protectionism – countries preventing exporting of products

• High oil prices

• On the bright side, Vietnam appears to be self-sufficient for food, and is also attracting manufacturing business away from China

USD is very strong at the moment, but with 10% inflation, how long can that last? How long can countries keep the money printer off? UK recently had Bank of England support bond buying again to prevent pension funds from being liquidated (in direct opposition to the new government policy of tax cuts!) – there is only so much pain the macro can take before governments use their fiat currencies to support the markets again – after that happens hard assets such as ETH should do better. (Not financial advice!)

Quadratic Funding and Sybil Resistance

Gitcoin is the main place quadratic funding is used. Large donors provide matching funds. Small donors make allocations to their choice of project grants (there are thousands). Matching funds get allocated to Gitcoin grants based more heavily on the number of small donations rather than the total amount donated. This shifts power from the whales to the small donors.

Quadratic funding has a problem of Sybil attacks (see glossary below for definitions). Gitcoin Passport can help prevent Sybil attacks. A person (via their Ethereum account) can accumulate up to 20 or so “stamps” from various identity providers, both centralised (Facebook, Amazon) and decentralised. Accounts with a passport with a lot of stamps have much higher weight when allocating matching funds.

How to get yield (APR) in Defi?

We discussed many different ways of getting yield on assets, including:

• Staking Ethereum or tokens in smart contracts (or centralised providers)

• Uniswap or Curve liquidity positions - get trading fees, but danger of impermanent loss

• Farming these liquidity positions using external incentives. LPs are locked into another smart contract, and token rewards accumulate, providing extra APR.

• Stablecoins offering 20% - buyer beware! Remember Terra/Luna collapse

• Emission of new tokens on a small cap - 10,000% APR may be stated, but token price will exponentially decrease as whales sell their accumulated tokens.

• Assets can be deposited on lending protocols such as AAVE. APRs currently low.

Super Typhoon Noru!

We were not able to meet in person this week because Super Typhoon Noru had been approaching for a few days and Danang city authorities told everyone to stay inside. Noru originated over the Philippine Sea last week, and had 10-minute wind speeds of up to 175 kph (110 mph). As Noru passed over Luzon island, Philippines, widespread damage was caused. Today it passed directly over Danang, but fortunately wind speeds had reduced to 133 kph. When I went out earlier today the streets were full of leaves, branches, and some fallen trees, however I did not see extensive damage to buildings and perhaps the damage here in Danang is lower than expected, time will tell.

Optimism Quests

Optimism and Arbitrum are the top two Optimistic Rollups (Layer 2s) on Ethereum. Arbitrum released their Odyssey earlier in the year, however it overloaded Arbitrum network and they had to pause it until Arbitrum Nitro was launched. (Arbitrum – wen restart Odyssey?!)

Optimism have a robust response to the Arbitrum Odyssey, which is Optimism Quests. This allows anyone to get 18 NFTs for using 18 different apps on Optimism. Some good reasons to do this:

• Optimism is great! Faster and cheaper than Ethereum mainnet, but with assets secured by Ethereum mainnet security

• Who doesn’t love a free NFT mint?

• Practice your Defi skills

• Understand the Optimism ecosystem better by participating in it

• Potential airdrops for using both Optimism and the apps on Optimism (caution – recommend only doing quests and minting NFTs on 1 account, to avoid being labelled as a Sybil attacker)

• Potential other future benefits of holding these NFTs

Demo: Flash loans using Solidity and Javascript. We talked about:

• The Aave contract on Ethereum mainnet which has a flashloan method, that borrows potentially all of an asset in Aave, but only for the duration of 1 transaction, and charging a 0.09% fee

• Deploying another custom contract to call the Aave flashloan and arbitrage prices between Uniswap and Kyber exchanges

• Scanning Uniswap and Kyber data feeds locally using Javascript. Finding arbitrage opportunities. Submitting them to the custom contract as data. The custom contract then executes the arbitrage, using funds from the flashloan. How if the funds are not returned to Aave, the transaction fails.

Checksums on Ethereum addresses (such as my address 0x7349d6e55cB3F737249FbAa047C16b826559B127) – how the mixture of lower case and upper case letters can be used to check if an Ethereum address is valid, and prevent sending assets to the wrong address.

PS - the Ethereum Merge is nearly upon us!

For the last 15 weeks on Wednesday mornings we’ve been running a local meetup in Danang, Vietnam. We call it “Defi Study Group”. It gathers people together to discuss anything in blockchain or crypto, and to use some of the new and exciting apps in the Ethereum ecosystem. Our main aims are to have fun, stimulate group discussion, and help progress crypto education for anyone who attends.

We have had programmers who have talked us through code and showed what it does.

We have had power users who have explained various aspects of decentralised finance, NFTs, mobile apps, safe storage of assets, or blockchain layer 1s.

But most importantly we have had regular people through who are just curious about crypto and want to find out more. Our group is a place where they will definitely find out more, in a friendly atmosphere!

A couple of things we are not doing are providing trading tips or shilling tokens. Instead, the focus is on learning about the whole blockchain ecosystem, how it works, what it is capable of. The group is free to attend, so no money changes hands in the group. This approach both benefits attendees and respects local laws!

This group started up because I had coffee with Aaron Everhart on 31st May 2022 in Lang Roastery in Danang. Previously, Aaron had run various web3 evening events in Danang, and I invited him to coffee just to talk crypto with someone in real life, I’d been following the Ethereum ecosystem closely since mid-2020. During the conversation I said how nice it would be to have a group of people to “do crypto things” together, how the Ethereum ecosystem was so active, and how we all ought to be spending time engaging with it. He said I should start a local meetup, and that his Draper Startup house could host. I said something like “how about next week”? That got updated to “well how about tomorrow”? And we did! We ran the 1st meeting on 1st June, and four people attended. We have been running ever since.

Although so far I have been providing the majority of the content each week, we have had other attendees take an hour and present something they are knowledgable about, such as NFTs or flash loans. It is so great to join the community each week and explore the highly dynamic and ever progressing crypto ecosystem!

I have never been short of things to talk about, mainly because I keep up to date on crypto as one of my personal hobbies. My three main sources are: following core Ethereum people on Twitter, watching Anthony Sassano’s “The Daily Gwei” channel on YouTube, and viewing Bankless content in all its forms. Thank you all for your great educational content!

The path to crypto adoption is the same as any new technology – education. At one point people did not know how to use email, or web browsers, or (much longer ago) write letters by hand.
