Eventually, they did, but it took very long for them to respond. The waste collectors started showing up regularly, ringing bells on Saturdays to tell people to bring out their bins. But the system still had gaps. Many people were at work or busy, so they missed the bell and ended up dumping their trash at night, when no one was watching. As soon as one person did it, others followed, and the streets became dirty all over again.</p><p>The worst part? These waste collectors were paid very little for their hard work. They didn’t even get proper protective gear—no shoes, no masks, no gloves. They were exposed to diseases, just like the rest of us, because the centralized systems in charge of waste management didn’t care enough to protect them. And what about recycling? Plastic, rubber, and metal waste polluted our rivers, especially during the rainy season. Floods would wash all the trash from the streets into the rivers, contaminating the water we used to wash clothes and plates. It became too risky to even use the rivers anymore.
