On a recent flight, my colleague met professionals in travel nursing who shared they were looking into a six-week course on how to invest in crypto. Fascinated by this, my colleague and I started discussing why travel nurses are a likely community to dive head-first into crypto and web3.

Web3 and Crypto attracts natural learners

While it might seem strange on the surface to look at travel nurses as early adopters of cryptocurrency and web3, there are several elements coming together at the same time to make this the case. Nurses are in high demand, and travel nurse contracts are paying at rates unseen before to compensate these amazing professionals. This community is now looking at new and interesting ways to invest their earnings and diversify their portfolios. Possibly the most important element though is that nurses are natural learners. Continuing education is a requirement of their profession, so signing on for a six-week course to learn a new skill is second nature to them. And, since their initial training includes not only classroom learning but also clinical rotations and precepted learning from professionals in the field, they are naturals at building and integrating with learning communities.

Nurses have already gone down the crypto rabbit hole

To learn more about the potential for nurses to be a niche community within web3, I didn’t have to look far. My sister is a travel nurse working in critical care. I was blown away when I asked if she had ever considered dipping her toe into investing in cryptocurrency.

To my surprise, she already has!

So, while the news that the nurse closest to me is already buying cryptocurrency was surprising, what she described about her journey wasn’t. My sister confirmed what many newbs (myself included) experience while navigating our way into the wild west of crypto and web3 - the sheer volume of content and unfamiliar terminology is overwhelming and intimidating. The travel nurse my colleague met relayed the same experience, which is why nurses are willing to pay a hefty fee to join a six-week learning course on crypto!

Our community is building the front door to the wild west of web3

For these reasons, our community team at Proxy is creating a web3 front door that anyone can easily go through to learn. And, we have no intention of charging for this. In the meantime, to help all my nursing friends out there, I’m sharing a list of crypto and web3 resources that I’ve found helpful.

Baby steps for newbies to crypto and web3

Step 1: Join Twitter to ask any and all your questions. My community-cultivating colleagues and I have all found “crypto Twitter” to be a space where questions are encouraged and knowledge is shared freely. Be brave and dive in with your questions. There is no such thing as a dumb question. Once you join Twitter, send your crypto and web3 questions to @proxy. I promise we will respond quickly!

Step 2: Learn for 12 days with Odyssey DAO. This learning community is looking to onboard one million people to web3 through creating quality web3 education. Their “12 Days of Web3” email series is a great place to start.

Step 3: Watch quick, easy-to-digest videos offering explanations in basic terms on Whiteboard Crypto’s YouTube channel. Topics include “What is a blockchain?”, “What is a NFT?”, “What is a cryptocurrency wallet?” and more.

Step 4: If you’re like me and don’t want to add emails to your inbox, another good place to start learning is Peter Yang’s “Curious Beginners’ Guide to Crypto.” Of note, Peter Yang is the mind behind Odyssey DAO.

I spent 17 years of my career in healthcare serving those who serve. I’m learning too and would love to connect with nurses and medical professionals who have any questions. DM me on Twitter at @emily_hurless.

Credit to artist Leah Pinney for the awesome feature image shared above.
