Arquitetura do Palácio

Desenvolve-se em dois pisos, adaptando-se ao declive da encosta. No piso superior funciona a habitação.

No século XIX segundo Braancamp Freire, D. Henrique established two colleges, funded by the royal treasury, in Angra and Funchal.

The College of the Jesuits of Angra was ordered to be erected by decree of D. Sebastião dated February 19, 1570, the departure of the religious being thus recorded, at the beginning of the same year:

"These past days will leave here three Fathers and new Brothers who will go to the Isla de Madera to found the college (...). de Março poco más o menos" Thus, on June 1, 1570, after a stormy journey, the group of twelve religious solemnly entered Angra, under the leadership of that provincial. Also noteworthy in the group were the names of Luís de Vasconcelos (rector and master - or reader - of cases of conscience), Pêro Gomes and Baltasar Barreiros.

José da Silva do Canto, who founded the Nossa Senhora das Neves Retreat and Hermitage in Rua da Rocha (later Rua de Jesus, in honor of the Company), made these facilities available for them to settle in. Since these accommodations were limited, new facilities were sought, which were found in a house on the site of the current palace, which became the Company's second home in Angra. By Permit passed in Almeirim on March 20, 1572, D. Sebastião granted the necessary licenses for the construction of a new building, with the design of the Jesuit Tinoco, and attributed 600$00 annual reis for the establishment and maintenance of the Company's priests, paid from that year onwards by the Ombudsman of the Royal Treasury on Terceira, through the income of the Crown on that island. The works were directed by the Jesuit Francisco Dias, using alms from the island's main families.

At the same time, in Ponta Delgada, João Lopes, a New Christian from Porto who had become rich in trade, bequeathed in his will the yield of thirty moios of wheat to the Company, with the condition that a College also be opened in that city, which would take place in 1592.

Palace of the Captains-General: facade of the Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola.

From the Philippine Dynasty to the Restoration of Independence

According to some authors, the work on the College only began in the context of the Philippine Dynasty, in 1608-1609, with its occupation having been registered around 1620.

On the other hand, the "Historical notes relating to part of the old Jesuit College in Angra do Heroísmo" belonging to the Ministry of the Army, state that the set was used militarily from August 1582, shortly after the landing of the forces of António I of Portugal carried out on the 26th of July. That sovereign ordered the property to be dismantled, having sent the Jesuits who had been prisoners there since the end of July to England, replacing them with others that he had taken with him. The building was then used as an infirmary by French soldiers from D. António's staff and as an ammunition magazine.

With the Restoration of Independence, from April 21, 1641, meetings of the Council of War were held here, chaired by the Jesuit priest Francisco Cabral, coordinating the siege of the Castle of São Filipe (currently the Fortress of São João Baptista) until the its capitulation, on March 4, 1642. The same source states that the inauguration of the College took place on June 17, 1651.

In this period, the set was integrated not only by the current building, then with a residential function - whose main entrance was on the side of the current Largo do Prior do Crato -, but also by the building of the College itself - in the place of the current Largo do Prior do Crato, defining the so-called "Pátio dos Estudantes" -, and by Igreja do Colégio. Later, in 1709, the building of the so-called "Colégio Novo" was added to this set, where the Regional Directorate for Communities is currently located, in Largo 22 de Junho de 1828.

With regard to the study plan, part IV of the Society's Constitutions, written by Ignatius of Loyola, was followed with regard to the disciplines and works that should be studied. Subsequently, the "Ratio Studiorum" was enacted for the College of Angra, by Circular of January 8, 1599. The courses taught here ranged from elementary school (then the first letters) to higher education. In this last modality, the following courses were offered:

Letters - the most elementary, lasting three years, comprising Grammar (Latin), Humanities and Rhetoric; Philosophy or Arts - lasting three years and seven months, comprising Dialectics, Logic, Physics and Metaphysics; and Theology - the most advanced, lasting four years, comprising Scholastic Theology, Sacred Scripture, Hebrew, Eastern and South American (indigenous) languages, and Casuistry.

Palace of Captains-General: monument in honor of João Baptista Machado, martyr of Japan.

The Pombaline reforms: the General Captaincy

Centuries later, in the context of the Pombaline reforms, in the face of the expulsion of the Jesuits from the kingdom of Portugal (1759), the religious were expelled from the Azores in the following year (1760), with Colégio da Terceira being the last to be abandoned, in 15 of August. The College building, the Pátio dos Estudos, the Church and the respective annexes were confiscated by the National Treasury.

With the new administrative, civil and judicial organization for the Archipelago - the Captaincy General of the Azores -, centralized in the city of Angra and personified in the figure of a Captain-General (royal charter of July 26, 1766), the residential wing building from the former Colégio da Ascensão began to serve as a residence for the new governors (Royal Charter of September 26, 1766).

For this reason, the first Captain-General of the Azores, D. Antão de Almada (1766-1774), began to adapt this building to the functions of a palace, transforming the convent cells into bedrooms and establishing some rooms for the General Government Secretariat and for the Board of the Royal Treasury in the captaincy, the latter inaugurated on November 24, 1766 (COSTA, 1867:127). The Sergeant-Major with the practice of Engineer, João António Júdice, was in charge of the project for these adaptation works, according to the plan currently in the Ministry of the Army in Lisbon (Plans of the Two Floors of the House of the Company of Jesus, 1767).

The second Captain-General, Dinis Gregório de Melo Castro e Mendonça (1774-1793), considering the works promoted by his predecessor in the palace to be unsatisfactory, preferred to reside in the palace of the Governor of the Fortress of São João Baptista (COSTA, 1867:127).

Palace of the Captains-General: appearance of the "Room of the Kings of Bragança".

It was with the third Captain-General, Lourenço José Boaventura de Almada (1799-1804), who settled in this building on October 30, 1796, that it was effectively adapted to the function of "government palace", which it retained until its extinction of office, under the Count of Vila Flor in 1830.
