Antonio Conte declared his Tottenham team to be “now in the race” for Champions League qualification after they swept Newcastle away with a devastating second-half performance.

Tottenham’s third successive win, and their sixth in eight, lifted them into the top four for at least 24 hours and the manner in which they cut loose to score five goals may look ominous for their rivals. Conte has urged caution about their prospects since being appointed in November, suggesting more than once that they are well short of the level required for Europe’s elite, but he has seen enough improvement to believe they have a realistic shot at finishing the season successfully.

“When I arrived I found one type of situation and at that time it was very difficult to believe [we would] be in the race for the Champions League,” Conte said. “But I think in the last period I have seen my team is now in the race because I have seen great improvement.

“Now you can see a team that has specific characteristics. You can recognise the idea of football, and for this reason I said that we are in the race to try to take a place in the Champions League, because in this moment this team is a team. A team with an idea of football.”

Conte went out of his way to praise Harry Kane, who was heavily involved in Spurs’ second and third goals but did not score himself, and said he wants to ensure the England captain is convinced about the club’s long-term direction.

“He deserves the best because he’s a great worker,” he said. “He was a big example for his teammates. When you see him working this way, you have the desire to continue to work and to work very hard. For this reason I want to tell him thanks, because he is always a big example and I hope to give him satisfaction. I think he is enjoying playing this type of football and we have to try to continue together because I’m seeing great improvement in many players. Everyone is improving their level and for this reason Tottenham is going up and up.”

Eddie Howe was disappointed by the way Newcastle, who had led through Fabian Schär, responded to going behind and said the defeat was a reminder that their relegation fight has yet to conclude successfully. “I’m being careful to not go too over the top with my criticism,” he said. “But we need to be smarter. It was in our desire to get back into the game. What’s to come is a key week for us. We’re in a position that we didn’t expect to be in. Maybe this is a little jolt that we can’t get ahead of ourselves.”

we have a small favour to ask. Since we started publishing 200 years ago, tens of millions have placed their trust in the Guardian’s fearless journalism, turning to us in moments of crisis, uncertainty, solidarity and hope. More than 1.5 million supporters, from 180 countries, now power us financially – keeping us open to all, and fiercely independent.

Unlike many others, the Guardian has no shareholders and no billionaire owner.

Antonio Conte will see this victory as progress: weary but persistent opponents held at arm’s length, the rare sensation of successive wins and enough vigour in attack to suggest that Tottenham have no intention of letting Arsenal out of their sights.

The chase for the coveted fourth spot is on and Spurs, who could have put more than three goals past a tired West Ham, are building momentum at the right time. They are only three points below Arsenal, albeit having played a game more, and most importantly there is a sense of the pieces starting to fall into place under Conte, who could reflect not only on the devastating combinations between Harry Kane and Son Heung-min but also how his side’s game management ensured that a West Ham equaliser rarely seemed likely in the second half.

By the end the sense was this is what Conte wants: energy, dynamism and variety with the ball; ruggedness, discipline and desire without it.

Cristian Romero was a towering influence at the back and Rodrigo Bentancur impressive alongside Pierre-Emile Højbjerg in midfield. “Now I see we are a really good team,” Conte said. “It was very difficult to play against us.” So difficult, in fact, that Conte even talked about wanting a chance to have another go at Chelsea after losing three times to them in January.

Spurs are a much sharper proposition now and it certainly helps that Kane is over his autumn slump, the striker’s craft far too much for West Ham to handle.

“He is two players in one – a No 10 and a No 9,” Conte said, marvelling at how Kane shook off the disappointment of failing to score by making all three Spurs goals. “A world-class player,” David Moyes said as he reflected on West Ham’s inability to contain the England captain’s ability to drop deep and play sweeping through-balls to Son. “We didn’t quite get it right.” West Ham could have few complaints about Spurs going above them.

Moyes’s decision to match Conte’s 3-4-3 backfired and his side looked short of ideas in the second half, their attacking threat limited by Jarrod Bowen’s absence and their lack of depth exposed when an exhausted Michail Antonio had to go off before the hour.

“We needed Michail at a really high level,” Moyes said. “The Tottenham front players were at such a high level. Spurs suck you in, then get it through to Kane and Son. We had the ball for the opening 15 minutes. But they were two goals up.”

Harry Kane failed to score against West Ham but gave Son Heung-min two assists. Photograph: Dave Shopland/Shutterstock

No doubt it helped that West Ham were feeling the effects of going to extra time during their Europa League victory over Sevilla. Spurs were hunting for lethargy and their plan worked after only nine minutes, the opener arriving when Matt Doherty hounded Arthur Masuaku off the ball when the West Ham wing-back dithered on the left.

It was poor from Masuaku, starting for the first time since Boxing Day, but fine work from Doherty. The right wing-back found Kane and the striker looked for Son, whose presence was enough to force Kurt Zouma to divert the ball past Lukasz Fabianski.

It should have been 2-0 two minutes later. This time Dejan Kulusevski caused problems, dribbling through on the right and teeing up Son, who shot wide of the empty net.

Son soon redeemed himself. His goal was a classic: Kane dropping deep, escaping Declan Rice and spraying a gorgeous diagonal pass to the South Korean, who unleashed a vicious shot that flew past Fabianski thanks to a slight touch off an increasingly hapless Zouma.

However, Spurs were not entirely secure. They were fortunate not to be pegged back after 10 minutes, Antonio shooting wide after slack play from Kane and Eric Dier, and West Ham had hope before the interval. Aaron Cresswell swung in a corner, Craig Dawson headed it on and Saïd Benrahma volleyed past Hugo Lloris.

There was no decrease in the entertainment after half-time. Spurs were menacing on the break and almost regained their two-goal lead after 51 minutes, Son the provider this time, Kane just unable to squeeze his shot past Fabianski.

With the dramatic tension rising, there was speedy action from the stewards to stop pitch invaders from chaining themselves to the goals at both ends.

The Fiver: sign up and get our daily football email.

Moments later West Ham should have equalised, Antonio volleying Cresswell’s cross over. It was Antonio’s final contribution, Moyes sending on Andriy Yarmolenko and replacing Masuaku with Pablo Fornals as West Ham tried to give themselves more options in attack.

Yet Spurs eventually made the points safe. Lloris punted the ball forward, Kane beat Dawson and Zouma in the air and Son ran through to beat Fabianski again. “There is only one target in our mind,” Conte said. Arsenal can consider themselves warned.

As the number of people using the Internet as an integral part of their daily life grows, it is inevitable that the number of Internet Scams will grow. Unfortunately there are many forms of scams but in this article we will look at three of the most prominent.

419 fraud or "Nigerian Scams"

Also known as advanced fee fraud (AFF), 4-1-9 scams are named after the section of the Nigerian penal code that deals with fraud. Although originally originating in Nigeria these scams can originate from anywhere. If you fall for one of these at best you will lose thousands of dollars; at worst you will lose your life. These usually start with an email from a bank official or the relative of a recently deceased African president or a government minister informing you that they have access to millions of dollars but need your help to get the money out of the country. The end result is that when the deal is threatened you will be asked for money to secure the release of the funds. Do not under any circumstances reply to these letters, people have been murdered while following up with these scams.

Phishing

Phishing scams can be very elaborate, scammers send out emails to millions of internet addresses purporting to be from a financial institution, and requiring you to log in and confirm your details. The email looks authentic and contains a link that you need to click. If you happen to have an account at the bank featured in the scam then it's a very natural thing to click the link and login to "your" account except it's not your account or even your bank. It will be a website setup by the scammers to extract as much information from you as possible, Name, Address Credit card details, Bank login, Password, PIN number etc. Once they have these details it is very likely that will have access to your funds and in the worse case your identity. Avoid these scams by never clicking on a link in an email like these, Banks do not sent out emails requesting you login and confirm your details.

Vehicle sales Fraud

If you place an advert online to sell a car, boat, or motorcycle you will probably receive one of these scam attempts. You will receive an email from abroad saying that they would like to buy your vehicle and arrange shipping. Once you agree you will get a check or bankers draft in the mail within a few days for the amount you asked for the vehicle PLUS the shipping fee you will then be asked to contact the shipper and pay him the extra amount. If you are sensible you will wait for the check to clear then pass on the shipping fee. This is what the scammers expect, the check will only bounce about 3 weeks to a month later at which point your bank will take back the money leaving you short of the shipping money. The best way of avoiding this fraud is not to sell your vehicle to someone who wants to pay the shipper.

I hope all this hasn't scared you away from the Internet, If you are sensible and wary about offers that seem too good to be true then you should be Ok, just apply the same commonsense you use in everyday life, after all if a stranger walked up to you in the street and said "Hi I am from your bank what's your credit card number and PIN" would you give it to them?

Mark Thompson ran an IT consultancy in London for many years . He now live in Spain and runs an number of websites including The Income Site

Most of us own a simple and good life. City born and city bred, we sometimes imagine the idyllic pastoral scene such as the friendly people, the clean atmosphere, the closeness to nature and the gentle pace of living. In face, everything has its pros and cons. The other side of picture is that leftover children have become a heavy topic nowadays, because most parents of these children consider that to feed their children well and to let them grow up health and safe in body are the most important task. However, as a matter of fact, in addition to provide the basic needs for their children, parents should pay more attention to their children's psychological needs and their education.

For one thing, parents who cannot accompany their children often need to pay more attention to their children's psychological needs. Therefore, it seems to me that government can set up a parents school for these children on holidays and organize" hand-in-hand" activity to call on more people to help them. We can also raise money to donate to these children. As the song says:"If everyone gives their love, the world will be better." It's very important for us to pay more attention to these children if we want to build a harmonious society.

For another, education of leftover children is also quite important. As the saying goes, “knowledge can change our fate”, education is an effective way to change the future of those children. In order to make those leftover children grow up in health, therefore, we need to show more concern about their psychological needs and their education.

In my view, leftover children should be encouraged to live with or near their parents, which is very helpful for them to be loved and concerned, they also can have a simple and good life.

Telecommuting' refers to workers doing their jobs from home for part of each week and communicating with their office using computer technology. Telecommuting is growing in many countries and is expected to be common for most office workers in the coming decades.

How do you think society will be affected by the growth of telecommuting?

Model Answer:

The spread of telecommuting is sure to have far-reaching effects on society. By itself, telecommuting refers to offiice workers spending much of their time working from home and using electronic technologies to communicate with their employers. The broader implications of telecommuting, however, may involve changes to corporate structure, workers' lifestyles and even urban planning.

The most obvious changes may be apparent in the `normal' offices of companies, governments and other organisations. If even half the working week is spent telecommuting from home, then we would initially expect many empty desks in the offiice. As offices grow smaller, workers coming in for the day would be expected to share desks with their absent colleagues. This, in turn, may affect the social atmosphere of an organisation, however, as less social contact with one's colleagues could harm morale and loyalty.

For the individual office worker, telecommuting would mean spending more time at home. For a parent with young children, this may be a blessing. Moreover, many telecommuters would be able to work the hours they wished: having a nap in the afternrnoon, for example, but working some hours in the evening. One substantial benefit for all telecommuting workers is that there will be no need to travel to work, allowing more free time.

The structure of urban life is also likely to be affected by telecommuting. We would expect to see fewer cars on the road during peak hours and, eventually, a smaller concentration of offiices in cities' central business districts. In short, people will have less reason to travel to city centres from outlying areas. As more people work and live in the same location, shops and cultural events will likely relocate themselves out of the city centre.

In sum, telecommuting will serve not only to change the way we work but also the way we live.
