XFondo Whistler number 4 is not far away, so it's time to get the 2025 ambassador welcome notes out!

Don't tell anyone, but XFondo is our favourite event to put on, and not because we end up getting a chunk more sleep. It's a let-your-hair-down style community-centric biking event where riders get to play silly-geese on some of the best (and most annoying: Troublesome Rock Garden anyone?) terrain going. Then, we drink beer.

The 4 types of ground - road, dirt, mud, gravel - are meant to be kind(ish) to those who might never have gone past a road bike but are looking for something a little more challenging. And to be totally honest, the riding is really just an excuse to come together, have a good time and shoot the shit with friends, old and new.

XFondo is proud to support community initiatives. As well as partnering with many local suppliers, vendors and sponsors, we champion several banner causes:

• Moosehide Campaign - (Indigenous-led grassroots movement to engage men and boys in ending violence towards women and children). XFondo riders are all given a vegan moosehide pin to help spread the conversation.

• Same Game Challenge - (internal organizational gender equity). As an events company, we are enrolled in the federally-funded Women and Sport program The Same Game Challenge for 2024. Our goal is to better understand how we, as an events operator, can support, encourage and keep more women in cycling.

• WORCA - Whistler Off Road Cycling Association (trail and offroad cycling advocacy). XFondo riders can choose to donate to WORCA during registration and help maintain the lands we ride on.

• Zero Waste via AWARE - Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment - AWARE help to manage our recycling program and reduce the impact of XFondo as much as possible.

With the new year shortly behind us, it feels a timely moment to kick off the second year of the RBC GranFondo Whistler ambassador program as we all gear up for another exciting cycling season.

Conceived as part of the 15 year anniversary celebrations in 2024, our goal in inviting your participation echoes a conscious effort to give back and grow ever more connected with the community and places who have helped create and make sustainable the largest Gran Fondo in North America. The phrase "it takes a village" is true and you, as influential leaders, are an extremely important and valued part of that.

Aside from welcoming you into the class of 2025, the purpose of this message is to bring you behind the curtain and provide perspective as we work together towards expanding access to the sport we all love. It's great timing too, as news just arrives of being voted the best Gran Fondo on the continent again for the fifth time in the past six years of nominations.

For 2025, people have more options and lower barriers than ever to get involved.

The event's loyalty program is now in effect. This is helping to reduce the price of entry to RBC GranFondo Whistler by up to 15%. Starting from 2023 when our switch in technology partner enabled the ability:

2 years of riding unlocks 5% off,

3-4 years unlocks 10%,

5+ years provides 15% off.

These discounts are permanent, and work by a one-time code that participants are automatically emailed once unlocked.

Speaking of prices, we're happy to say that across the board, all prices have been frozen from last year.

Moreover, we've introduced Save My Spot to help break up the cost of event entry into smaller pieces. Similar to what you might have used through retailers like Afterpay or Sezzle, people are now able to "reserve" their spot for $150 down, and pay the remainder of their balance when convenient to complete their registration.

In addition, Ride Club has launched to provide a public ledger of results, achievements and participation. Anyone can log on and see their Club (eg the 8 year club shows everyone who's completed 8 rides since 2010), download printable certificates and collect badges.

Project 30by30 moves into its 2nd year, an exploration and journey towards the goal of seeing at least 30% female participation by 2030. We always want to be growing the conversation about how we move closer to this target.

In fantastic news, both our all-terrain XFondo event and Clinics training program are at 52% and 50% gender split as of this year!

Speaking of the Fondo Clinics, the 12 week program returns in an expanded format with soon-to-be-announced partners Bici. Designed with tiers for all abilities, the Clinics stated aim is to get participants to the Whistler finish line in a fun, social and safe supportive environment.

This year, we're adding bi-weekly Vancouver social rides ending with a coffee that all clinic members are welcome to join together, plus new sessions on bike maintenance, preparation and hill climbing.

There will also be a new no-obligation intro session before the program starts to meet the coaches, ask questions, and see if it feels like a good fit. Clinics will run in-person and virtual between June 9th 2025 - Aug 29th.

We've also worked to bring a new website online! While similar in look to the last one, the goal for the new site was to simplify complicated events into more a digestible format. Case in point: where there used to be 80 pages, there are now 10. The website is still in live beta, so plenty of updates will come in due course.

To help bring more value to your peers, you will have received a promo code to share out for $25 off. This helps reward those within your sphere, and provide a cherry-like incentive to compliment your own efforts at support and inspiration.

In 2025, we're headed to Mexico, returning to all-terrain at XFondo and celebrating RBC GranFondo Whistler with the theme of Be Iconic.

This International Women's Day on Fri March 8 we are introducing a new community project called 30by30. The overall goal of 30by30 is to increase female and non-male participation and support within the sport of cycling.

While 30by30 will be introduced on this date, the specifics of the plan will be released a couple of weeks later. We would love to involve you as ambassadors to give your feedback on the plan, and to help shape it be the best it can possibly be before all details are announced.

Let’s celebrate International Women’s day not just with words, but by taking action.

The sport of cycling typically sees significantly lower levels of female participation compared to men, and we want to address this.

That is why we will soon be launching Project 30by30; a comprehensive program of goals, activities and community initiatives designed to increase the conversation around and access for women in cycling.

The average non-male participation rate at RBC GranFondo Whistler over the past 5 years has been 22.5%. Project 30by30 doesn’t just aim to increase this number to at least 30% by 2030, but is ultimately an ambition to see more women take up, stay and thrive in this sport.

We are excited to share more details with you in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!

Aim of 30by30

Event goal: At least 30% non-male RBC GranFondo Whistler event participation by 2030 (currently 22.5% average).

SUB GOAL 2: Commit to creating a range of new content across multiple types of media throughout the year that both explores, celebrates and elevates the conversation around women's experiences in cycling.

SUB GOAL 3: 50% gender ratio for image & video on our website. (currently at goal)

SUB GOAL 4: As an events organization, complete the Same Game Challenge by August to better understand and formulate our gender equity plans.

Note

The Plan's list below constitutes actions. 30by30 acknowledges that just as important as action is listening. Within each action is an intention to both better understand the area and to hold space for the challenges faced. Often, simply voicing these challenges is an important piece in support of representation and awareness. Therefore, this step will intrinsically be a part of each action.

Specific areas

a) Provide greater access to / knowledge of bike services

We will work closely with our service partners such as Decathlon (bikes, gear), Velofix (mechanical) and others to offer more ways to discover safe, informative and friendly access to bike services.

b) Clothing

Cycling clothing is often designed around the male body and male needs. We will use feedback to improve our clothing to meet a more diverse range of requirements, as well as discuss and look for solutions with the limitations in traditional kit designs as they exist today.

In addition, we will explore ways to provide better and clearer information around fit and comfort for our products to help improve confidence levels in the purchasing process.

We will include these learnings as part of our storytelling efforts as part of section F below.

c) Knowledge

We will develop a new A-Z guide to the event that begins at the first step of the cycling journey, not just at registration.

This guide will highlight ways to get into cycling at the very outset, address challenges faced along the way, provide simple and clear guidance on what to expect at RBC GranFondo Whistler and how to get the most out of your weekend experience.

d) Training

We will continue to both offer and expand the Fondo Clinics training programs for all ability levels across both physical and virtual options.

In addition, the Fondo Clinics will keep on providing the option of women’s only clinics and look to expand the number of these clinics on offer.

Furthemore, we will explore ways we can make available additional skills and knowledge resources such as mentorship and courses outside of the Fondo Clinics program.

e) Ambassador program

The RBC GranFondo Whistler has launched a formal ambassador program for the first time in 2024. This is a hand-selected, closed program that is currently not accepting any more candidates.

The program is committed to maintaining an equally weighted male / female ratio going forwards.

f) Representation & storytelling

The representation of cycling is typically displayed in a male-centric manner. We want to use our platform to create a greater representation of gender equity and increase the conversation around women in cycling.

To do this, we will create and share stories using a wide range of media, such as written, video, podcast, social, in-person, photography etc that explore women's perspectives and experiences.

In addition, we will look for ways to better connect our audience with storied female athletes, such as RBC Olympians.

g) Community initiatives

We will use our platforms to highlight and share some of the outstanding community initiatives currently taking place which collectively aim to increase access into cycling for women and other under-represented groups such as LBGT+ and para athletes, such as:

• WowRide

• HUB Summer Cycling Program

• Chill Rides YVR LGBT community

and more.

h) New activations

Following feedback, we will be making women's sanitary products freely available at on-course and aid-station medical locations, in addition to already supplied medications.

There will be a new women’s meeting point & corral in Stanley Park.

In addition, we would love to develop and host a community leaders women’s panel and moderator discussion around female experiences in cycling.

i) Company education

As an events company we have successfully applied for the Women and Sport's National Same Game Challenge which aims to give sports organizations tools and education to develop and implement their gender equity plans.

The Challenge runs until August 2024 and has already formed the basis of the 30by30 initiative.

j) Organizational support

We are committed to supporting organizations that champion women's causes. This support takes a wide variety of forms, including providing auction entries to upcoming gala fundraisers and donation of our existing infrastructure resources.

k) Funding grant

Sport leaders in the Same Game Challenge are given a $1000 honorarium to spend at their discretion on causes that support their specific gender equity goals.

We will be donating these funds to a women's cycling cause later in 2024, and will consult with the public on which initiatives should be considered.

l) Build on successes

In 2023 we began a renewed focus on bringing more content that helped better prepare riders for their time on the bike. From smaller, easily digestible reels to info sheets and ways to get involved in the local community, we will be producing more of this well received and innovative content.

m) Feedback

30by30 aims to be more a conversation than a solution. As an events company and as a community, we are all on a shared journey of learning and growth along the path of inclusivity and representation.

While we strongly believe that sport and cycling should be and feel like they're for everybody, the steps required to get there are not always clear or easy. However, through positive intention and a bias towards action, we can do our best to hopefully move towards equitable change.

The Squamish Lillooet Regional District announced back in 2022 that it was proposing an extension to the Sea to Sky trail which forms much of the current XFondo Whistler route. The proposals were voted through the following year and despite delays, construction has been underway since.

This extension finally connects the trail fully between Whistler and Pemberton:

The Wilson 5 Foundation, a private philanthropic foundation formed by lululemon founder Chip Wilson, is contributing $1,370,000 to the project.

The Wilson 5 Foundation contribution augments the nearly $700,000 grant funding from the Ministry of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation’s Rural Economic Diversification and Infrastructure Program announced in April.

XFondo to venture onto the extension!

With the extension due to be open in time for June, we are thrilled to be bringing a 3rd distance category to the event on June 15.

On the map above, the new distance will be the longest one on offer and make use of the Rutherford Creek to Suicide Hill section.

We're yet to name this new distance category, but are likely to give it something humourous like "s*** that was long!". We expect it to be around 70km, with the other options currently at 60km and 43km.

XFondo is notorious for having lower headline distances that deceive in terms of difficulty, so don't be fooled! As a result, we are also considering renaming the "Shorter" category to "Long", keeping "Longer" category unchanged and then adding the new distance.

There will be an extra rest stop for these riders on the new course, with details to be released publicly later.

For those who prefer to hear things from the mule's mouth, it's a let-your-hair-down style community-centric biking event where we throw at you a varied bag of seriously fun but challenging terrain in BC's backyard for people who either know the off-road gravel world already or are looking to take things up a notch after growing familiar with their road bike adventures.

On behalf of Andrew Mar and myself, I'd like to officially welcome you into the RBC GranFondo Whistler ambassador family.

This is a brand new program to coincide with the 15 year anniversary of this event - officially the largest Gran Fondo in North America - and we couldn't be more excited to have you join as founding members.

The cycling community here in North America is vibrant and strong. We wanted to build a program that recognizes people like you who inspire others and are truly passionate about the sport of cycling while supporting active, healthy lifestyles.

One thing that was important to us when creating this ambassador program was to make sure those involved were hand picked and personally approached. We didn't advertise or hold any sort of application process. Many of you know Andrew well and he has worked hard to carefully craft a group of people who are dedicated to elevating this lifestyle we collectively love. The ambassador program is therefore about the quality of individuals involved, not quantity.

We want to recognize the work you are doing and support your endeavors. As such, and as founding ambassadors, you will be given behind the scenes access to all that we are working on from our events to community building efforts, as well as key timelines and upcoming launches and news.

In addition, we have made a new library of resources for you as creators to use and support the growth of your own connections.

We know that there is a big spread of backgrounds, styles and mediums between ambassadors, and so in return we are not giving a specific set of expectations (eg some of you might have less of an online presence, whereas some might have multiple social accounts, etc).

As such, what we'd like is for you to get out into the community, for example cycling clubs and local bike stores to help promote and share stories, advice and information as much as possible. For those with social media followings, we'd ask for a couple stories (IG, FB, TikTok, Threads and or Twitter/X) + static posts at least once per month and sharing of content related to the GranFondo (the news we share via this Paragraph account as well as the public newsletter).
