This post is enriched by your contributions.

For further discussion on any aspect covered in this piece, feel free to contact Hannes on X or via email.

Introduction: Zero-knowledge cryptography has undergone rapid advancements in recent years, playing a crucial role in enhancing scalability and privacy within blockchain networks. Breakthroughs in research have reduced the cost and time associated with generating proofs, and private funding has empowered teams to develop applications and infrastructure around this technology.

Aleo is at the forefront of this movement, securing over $200 million in funding with the mission of establishing privacy as the default setting in blockchains. To realize this objective, Aleo is constructing a new layer 1 blockchain that combines privacy and programmability. This approach simplifies the process for developers to create and deploy private and decentralized applications.

As of now, Aleo is in the final stages of testnets, with plans to launch on the mainnet later in 2023. Equilibrium Group, comprising Equilibrium Labs and Eiger, has collaborated with Aleo for more than three years, supporting various aspects of their core engineering, including node infrastructure (SnarkOS), core cryptography and zkVM (SnarkVM), and the proof-of-stake consensus mechanism (Narwhal-Bullshark).

This post serves as a comprehensive overview of the private blockchain space, with a subsequent deep dive into Aleo. Future posts will delve into specific components of the Aleo stack.

Evolution of Blockchains: Since Bitcoin's introduction of decentralized trust and cryptoeconomic security, blockchains have undergone multiple evolutionary phases. Ethereum brought general-purpose programmability and smart contracts, giving rise to a diverse ecosystem of applications (DeFi, NFTs, DAOs, etc.). Subsequent developments led to different design choices and trade-offs, and today, three main themes are emerging:

Single Shard Scalability:

Aiming for high throughput and low latency by pushing the monolithic stack's limits and integrating everything. Emphasis on hardware acceleration for enhanced performance and decentralization.

Modular Scalability:

Aiming for scalability and customizability through specialization. Modular blockchains focus on specific tasks, outsourcing other functions to different networks. This includes data-availability services, rollups, rollups-as-a-service, and more.

Programmable Privacy:

Aiming to make privacy the default in blockchains and simplify the process of developing private applications. This allows developers to seamlessly integrate privacy into their solutions, enabling multiple private applications to coexist on the same ledger. Programmable privacy builds upon existing solutions tailored for specific use cases, such as value transfers (e.g., Zcash).

While this categorization is somewhat simplified, it captures the key themes, with the current debate centering around modular vs. monolithic approaches, and programmable privacy emerging as a critical theme.
