In the realm of cybernetics, W. Ross Ashby formulated the First Law of Cybernetics, which roughly states:

To deal properly with the diversity of problems the world throws at you, you need to have a repertoire of responses that are (at least) as nuanced as the problems you face.

This principle, derived from Ashby's study of complex systems maintaining homeostasis in changing environments, highlights the need for adaptive and multifaceted responses. As our challenges in maintaining a "homeostatic" human experience have multiplied, our ability to respond has not kept pace. This principle is crucial for regen initiatives addressing complex and evolving environmental and social issues. It implies developing flexible and adaptive strategies to address the multifaceted challenges of sustainability and impact.

Key Question #1: How can your regen project develop a repertoire of responses that are as nuanced and adaptable as the diverse challenges it aims to address?

The Web3 Sustainability Loop, as Ocean Protocol outlines, emphasizes a cyclical approach to sustaining and growing ecosystems. This involves generating value, reinvesting it back into the ecosystem, and continuously improving through community engagement and innovation. This approach ensures that regen projects are not only environmentally and socially responsible but are also financially viable.

Key Question #2: How can your regen project create a cyclical system of value generation, reinvestment, and continuous improvement?

About Chiguru Ecospace

Nature Inspires - Chiguru Ecospace (NICE) is a 13-acre certified organic farm and biodiversity education center in Singadasanahalli village near Magadi, about two hours from Bengaluru. This beautiful green space is a natural heaven with over 300 species of flora & fauna calling it home. Working on integrated farming principles, the center creates awareness about sustainable & chemical-free farming, native plant & animal diversity, forgotten foods, healing herbs, and eco-conscious living. Srivathsa Govindaraju, a software engineer-turned-farmer, started his farm 15 years ago. "When I walk around this place, I see food everywhere," he often said as he introduced many forgotten foods and healing herbs throughout our stay.

What did we learn?

Integrated Farming and Biodiversity: Integrated farming principles combine different agricultural practices to enhance productivity, sustainability, and biodiversity. The farm is home to over 300 species of flora and fauna, demonstrating the value of biodiversity in agriculture. It takes the notion of a farm beyond the traditional crops grown in well-laid plots of land.

Sustainable and Chemical-Free Farming: Creating awareness about sustainable and chemical-free farming techniques is necessary. These methods are crucial for preserving soil health, reducing pollution, and ensuring the long-term viability of farming.

Conservation of Indigenous Flora and Fauna: The importance of conserving native plant and animal species. The farm showcases a wide variety of endemic plants, educating visitors on these species' ecological significance and medicinal values.

Value Addition and Sustainable Livelihoods: The farm demonstrates how value addition can transform agricultural produce into more profitable products, promoting economic sustainability for farmers. For example, converting coconuts into coconut burfi or making cassava flour increases the value of raw agricultural products.

Forgotten Foods and Healing Herbs: The farm strongly emphasizes educating visitors about forgotten foods and healing herbs, integral to India's rich biodiversity. These lessons aim to revive interest and knowledge in traditional foods and natural remedies, contributing to healthier lifestyle choices.

An exchange of vocabulary

The farm visit brought together a diverse group of individuals, each bringing unique perspectives. Our discussions spanned a variety of topics, starting with exploring how web3 could serve as a foundational layer for coordinating efforts to preserve and enhance our ecological systems. We delved into how technology could underpin our shared values in environmental stewardship, fostering a synergy between digital innovation and natural conservation.

As the day progressed, our conversations shifted to more immediate, actionable steps—how making small, consistent changes in our daily routines could cumulate into a substantial positive impact on the environment. We discussed the concept of regenerative living, emphasizing the importance of replenishing the resources we consume to foster a sustainable renewal cycle.

By the day's end, the exchange had enriched our collective vocabulary, establishing a shared understanding of the critical elements that need safeguarding in our environment. It was a convergence of ideas, highlighting how technological advancements, particularly in web3, promise to support our ecological objectives. This collaborative dialogue reinforced our commitment to integrating these insights into everyday life, aiming to contribute to a more sustainable and regenerative future.

Our inaugural 2024 workshop focused on the role of quadratic voting (QV) in collective decision-making by addressing a fundamental limitation of traditional voting mechanisms: the inability to measure the intensity of voters' preferences. We did some hands-on exercises to see this theory in action by executing a traditional poll and a QV to plan upcoming events for GreenPill India.

Comparing traditional polls with QV

To see the mechanism in action and to contrast it with regular polling, we ran the following options for future GreenPill India activities with the group. Here are the results from both polls:

The poll on the left was hosted on Slido, whereas the QV was conducted using RxC QV. While the top and bottom of the results appear the same, here are the insights made possible via QV:

• Async learning as an event is half as popular compared to the top choice in a traditional poll. However, QV offers additional perspective - it is out-of-preference than the top choice by a factor of 6.

• While fewer voters ranked "Ideathons" in the traditional poll (placed at #4 out of 6), QV is able to showcase the strong underlying preference from those voters to host this event.

• While the top two choices in the traditional poll reflect a close race, QV is able to capture the relative preference establishing that agendaless workshops are actually only half as much preferred than the topmost choice.

We also delved into the significant challenge posed by Sybil attacks in the voting process, where a single entity creates numerous fake identities (Sybils) to sway the voting outcome unfairly. This manipulation undermines the integrity and fairness of the decision-making. While we briefly touched on the potential of decentralized identity as a countermeasure, we agreed that this complex topic warrants a more thorough exploration in a dedicated follow-up conversation.

Quadratic Funding (QF) is a crowd-funding mechanism that amplifies available resources by inviting community members to make donations (big or small) that act as votes on where to allocate funds. The broader the support, the bigger the match!

How can we change the way social and industrial institutions function today using the opportunities created by the combination of governance, programmable money, and solidarity economy on the blockchain?

Here's a tiny slice of questions in the context of our digital lives:

• How is my data being monetized?

• Can I trust the information I find online?

• What happens to my content if a platform I rely on shuts down or changes its terms of service?

In our search for similar critical questions for a regenerative future, we discovered the following in the 2013 book, "Take Back the Economy: An Ethical Guide for Transforming Our Communities." The book challenges the traditional notion of economics as a field reserved for experts. Instead, it suggests that the economy is a reflection of the collective decisions and actions of individuals daily. In this post, we invite our readers to contemplate these questions from the book and develop their responses.

• What do we really need to live healthy lives both materially and psychically? How do we take other people and the planet into account when determining what's necessary for a healthy life? How do we survive well?

• What do we do with what is left over after we've met our survival needs? How do we make decisions about this excess? How do we distribute surplus?

• What types of relationships do we have with the people and environments that enable us to survive well? How much do we know about those who live in distant places and provide the inputs that we use to meet our needs? How do we encounter others as we seek to survive well?

• What materials and energy do we use up in the process of surviving well? What do we consume?

• How do we maintain, restore, and replenish the gifts of nature and intellect that all humans rely on? How do we care for our commons?

• How do we store and use our surplus and savings so that people and the planet are supported and sustained? How do we invest for the future?

These are not new questions. The opportunities to significantly advance democratic ownership and governance were already possible before the advent of cryptocurrency. However, these opportunities are now particularly well-suited to leverage the unique capabilities of crypto.

Web3 is an opportunity to do what could have been done before but wasn’t done, which is already being squandered with what is being done. Nevertheless, I will argue, it is an opportunity we need.

What is Mechanism Design?

Mechanism design is a field in economics and game theory that focuses on designing rules of a game to achieve a specific outcome, regardless of the participants' private preferences. It involves creating systems that encourage or incentivize individuals to act in ways that benefit a desired goal or outcome. For example, an auction is a mechanism for selling goods where buyers bid against each other, driving the price. The seller's goal is to maximize revenue, and the mechanism (the auction rules) is designed to encourage this result.

Mechanism design often involves understanding and designing solutions to situations where information is asymmetrical or incomplete, which complicates straightforward market transactions. It's often referred to as "reverse game theory" because, instead of starting with predefined rules and studying outcomes, we start with the desired outcome and try to engineer the rules to achieve it.

Those that effectively reward their pollinators (with nectar) get visited more often, ensuring their genes are passed on. Nature’s way of providing and valuing ecosystem services can inspire blockchain mechanisms for valuing, tracking, and rewarding contributions to a communal ecosystem. By recognizing and incentivizing efforts towards communal growth and sustainability, a regenerative financial ecosystem can flourish, mirroring the symbiotic relationships observed in nature.

It is clear that overcoming the challenges in human coordination requires more than just engineering and technological skills. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, combining knowledge from biology, ecology, and social sciences, can enhance our understanding and open up new possibilities. By taking inspiration from nature's complex self-organizing systems, we can rethink mechanism design on blockchain to encourage human collaboration, create and preserve public goods, and move closer to the ideals of regenerative economies. This blending of diverse ideas and disciplines could be the catalyst that drives us towards a more harmonious and sustainable financial paradigm, ushering in a new era of collaboration and collective prosperity.

The Genesis of the Chipko Movement

The Chipko Movement, which translates to "hug the trees" or "tree-hugging," had its roots in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand (formerly part of the state of Uttar Pradesh) in Northern India. This environmental crusade emerged as a response to the rampant commercial forestry practices threatening the fabric of local communities and their ecosystem.

In 1964 environmentalist and Gandhian social activist Chandi Prasad Bhatt founded a cooperative organization, Dasholi Gram Swarajya Mandal (DGSM), to foster small industries for rural villagers using local resources. When industrial logging was linked to the severe monsoon floods that killed more than 200 people in the region in 1970, DGSM became a force of opposition against the large-scale industry. The first Chipko protest occurred near the village of Mandal in the upper Alaknanda Valley in April 1973. Having been denied access to a few trees with which to build agricultural tools, the villagers were outraged when the government allotted a much larger plot to a sporting goods manufacturer. When their appeals were denied, Chandi Prasad Bhatt led villagers into the forest and embraced the trees to prevent logging. After many days of protests, the government canceled the company’s logging permit and granted the original allotment requested by DGSM.

Grassroots-Level Coordination and Solidarity

The Chipko Movement was a remarkable display of grassroots-level coordination and solidarity. Led by local women, who became the face of the movement, villagers came together to physically embrace the trees slated for felling. Their actions were driven by a deep-seated belief that the forests were not just a resource to be exploited but a living entity that deserved protection.

At its core, the Chipko Movement was a testament to the profound interconnectedness between people and nature. The indigenous communities of the region, predominantly composed of the Bhotiya, Garhwali, and Kumaoni tribes, recognized that their survival was intricately tied to the health and sustainability of the surrounding forests. The forests provided timber and essential resources such as clean water, fertile soil, and grazing lands for their livestock.

These communities understood that the value of all life, be it human or non-human, was paramount. Their actions embodied the very essence of interconnectedness. By hugging the trees, they sent a powerful message - "our bodies before our trees": the well-being of their communities was intricately linked to the well-being of the forests, and both were integral to the larger tapestry of life on Earth.

Impact and Legacy

The Chipko Movement had a profound impact on both local and global scales. At the local level, it succeeded in garnering attention and eventually led to a ban on commercial logging in the region. The movement also catalyzed a shift in forestry policies, emphasizing sustainable and community-based practices. Chipko put forests on the political agenda in the country leading to the creation of The Forest Conservation Act of 1980 and the environment ministry itself.

Over time, as a United Nations Environment Programme report mentioned, Chipko activists started "working a socioeconomic revolution by winning control of their forest resources from the hands of a distant bureaucracy which is only concerned with the selling of forestland for making urban-oriented products". The Chipko movement became a benchmark for socio-ecological movements in other forest areas of Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar; in September 1983, Chipko inspired a similar, Appiko movement in Karnataka state of India, where tree felling in the Western Ghats and Vindhyas was stopped.

Internationally, the Chipko Movement served as an inspiration for environmental movements worldwide. It underscored the potential of grassroots activism and the power of ordinary individuals to effect change. The movement also reinforced the idea that economic considerations should not supersede the values of solidarity and ecological preservation.

Lessons for Today

Reflecting on the Chipko Movement and its enduring legacy, we find many lessons for our journey toward a more inclusive and sustainable future. The interconnectedness between humanity and nature, championed by the Chipko activists, remains as relevant as ever. In the context of programmable money and the redesign of our economic systems, we can draw inspiration from the Chipko Movement's emphasis on values, solidarity, and community-based economics. Just as the Chipko activists protected their forests as a lifeline, we must prioritize the well-being of our communities and the planet in our economic endeavors.

The Chipko Movement reminds us that our choices today will shape the world of tomorrow. We have the opportunity to program our values into our economic systems. In doing so, we can create an ethically designed micro-economy that, like the Chipko Movement, fosters solidarity, drives collective action, and redistributes outcomes.

It's a future that's within our reach, and it's a future worth fighting for.

An equitable future rooted at the edges

We have been designing our social, industrial, and political institutions with a "control-first" mindset for centuries. This leads to disenfranchisement at the edges. The fundamental change to empower those who can solve problems on the spot must start with power dissipation from the center to these edges.

Elinor Ostrom won a Nobel in Economics in 2009 for her analysis of economic governance, especially the commons. It was long unanimously held among economists that natural resources used collectively would be over-exploited and destroyed in the long term. She disproved this idea by conducting field studies on how small local communities manage shared natural resources, such as pastures, fishing waters, and forests. She showed that when natural resources are jointly used by their users, in time, rules are established for how these are to be cared for and used in a way that is both economically and ecologically sustainable.

The potential of programmable money

“When everything is subject to money, then the scarcity of money makes everything scarce, including the basis of human life and happiness. Such is the life of the slave—one whose actions are compelled by threat to survival. Perhaps the deepest indication of our slavery is the monetization of time.”

An economy unilaterally focused on financial capital alone renders itself extractive. On the other hand, an economy rooted in solidarity is regenerative. In 2011, Ethan Roland & Gregory Landua expanded the concepts of wealth (and poverty) to include the valuable resources of personal connections, natural resources, land, knowledge, experience, and more in eight forms of capital.

The ability to program our monies opens a new opportunity to (re)embrace our roots in solidarity economics and our history in self-governance. It offers a means to create an ethically designed micro-economy with deliberate mechanisms to build solidarity, drive collective action, and redistribute outcomes.

At GreenPill India, we find it impossible to ignore the strands of DNA (beyond just composable technology) across culture, governance, and ethics that are coming together to challenge the status quo. However, tokens must be tethered with value before being attached to economics.

Last year, we helped kindle the spark with India's first ReFi Summit, followed by a 5-day GreenPill Festival bringing together creators and builders over climate workshops and hackathons by the beaches of Gokarna. Besides this, the core team at GreenPill India continues to push the realm of possibilities, building peer-to-peer impact networks for climate and social justice, using regenerative design to enable sustainable livelihoods, creating a capital network to address gaps in climate finance, and raising the bar of sustainability in the construction industry.

But we can only go so far alone. GreenPill India aspires to create spaces where dialogues can flourish and debates can be hosted to bring code and culture together to challenge the status quo and build plural pathways for an equitable future.

What can you expect here?

Our public goods are withering. The environment we live in, the infrastructure in our cities, social security for the neediest, access to unbiased news, and even the missing library in the neighborhood are all examples of public goods that need a revival. The current political landscape, welfare structures, financial systems, and philanthropic initiatives have not been able to overcome the failures in coordination.

With the current systems, we keep losing the game over and over again.

The forces leading to the gradual worsening of public goods arise from short-term thinking, individual ambition over community growth, apathy for community collaboration and lack of tools for collective action in the rare situations where there is intent.

Gulshan will be our digital garden to share our current understanding of what it would take to bring change at scale with and for those impacted. We will collect insights and plant them here to build a shared vocabulary for the diverse voices we need to build and thrive the future public goods!
