Most running gear begins with division.The rack splits into men’s and women’s.Cuts, colors, and campaigns reinforce a binary that extends beyond clothing. What looks like simple merchandising is in fact an echo of class structures: bodies segmented, identities predefined, performance dictated before it begins.

This logic belongs to Marxian socialism and its inherited structures—where class is constructed and reinforced, where belonging is organized through separation. In running, gender becomes a class. The garment becomes the instrument of division.

But running itself resists these categories.On the road, on the trail, the body reduces to rhythm and breath. Stride is universal. No category owns endurance.

Diffusion as Design

Imagine garments that do not reproduce division but diffuse it.Not men’s or women’s, not coded or classified—but fused.

Here, wearables function as systems rather than signals. Each seam, each panel, each material becomes more than fabric: a unifying layer, a conduit for performance. Identity does not end, but it merges. The runner becomes part of a cyborg-like network, where design collapses categories instead of creating them.

The Cyborg Refusal

Donna Haraway’s cyborg rejects boundaries:between male and female, human and machine, biology and technology.

Applied to running, the cyborg is the body in motion augmented by design.It is not gendered, not classed, but connected—a node in a larger system where feedback, optimization, and evolution move through both fabric and flesh.

This is not neutrality. Neutrality erases difference.This is diffusion. A refusal of division by embracing multiplicity.

Beyond the Rack

The future of running does not live in racks divided by class and gender.It lives in garments that collapse categories,in wearables that function as systems,in runners who are more cyborg than consumer.

Here, the garment does not tell you who you are.It extends what you can do.Running becomes less about identity and more about iteration.Less about categories and more about collapse.

Stride is universal. Division is not. The future is diffusion.

This is iteration. Not sudden transformation, but quiet evolution. The body learns. The mind sharpens. The future self emerges, one adjustment at a time.

To understand this process, four principles matter: Optimization, Transparency, Feedback, and Biohacking. They are not technologies, but ways of thinking. They are not tools, but frameworks for self-creation.

Optimization

Margins define performance. A fraction of weight, a subtle shift in posture, the invisible architecture of breath.Optimization is the art of narrowing waste—removing friction until movement becomes inevitable.

It is not decoration. It is function distilled to its essence.

Transparency

To evolve, one must first see clearly.Transparency is honesty with the self—the willingness to examine cause and effect, to know the source of strength and weakness.

Applied to materials, to methods, to mind—it dissolves illusions.Transparency transforms effort into understanding.

Feedback

Repetition without reflection is stagnation.Feedback is the signal that separates noise from progress.The ache in a muscle, the rhythm of breath, the quiet data written into fatigue.

The loop is simple: act, observe, adjust.Evolution is nothing more than feedback made visible.

Biohacking

To hack biology is not to defy it.It is to listen more closely. To recognize that temperature, circulation, recovery, and alignment can be guided.Not by machines, but by awareness. By design.

Biohacking is not an invasion of the body. It is a dialogue with it.

The Edge of Becoming

Optimization sharpens.Transparency clarifies.Feedback adapts.Biohacking unlocks.

Together, they are not instructions but invitations—ways of engaging with the self as process, not product.

The runner does not chase speed alone. They chase iteration.A continuous unfolding, where each stride carries within it the possibility of becoming someone else.

From an internal perspective, the body is deeply personal. Gender shapes how we inhabit space and perceive ourselves. Physical capabilities limit—or enable—how we move, while discomfort zones define thresholds of endurance and pain. These internal constraints and nuances form what I think of as the internal problem: the ways in which our body, as an intimate system, governs and shapes the possibilities of our identity.

Yet, the body is not isolated. It constantly interacts with the environment, adapting and reacting to external stimuli. Running through uneven terrain, contending with heat or wind, or negotiating urban landscapes—these external factors influence posture, pace, and effort. This interplay between body and environment forms an external problem: our physical self is simultaneously responding to, and shaped by, the world it moves through.

The diverse meanings of the body, then, are found in this duality: the tension between the internal and the external, between self-contained experience and environmental interaction. To fully understand our body is to understand it as both a vessel of identity and a responsive interface with the world—a dynamic system negotiating limits, thresholds, and adaptation.

In reflecting on these layers, I see a possibility for wearable conduits—garments and technologies that do not merely cover the body but mediate these internal and external dimensions. They translate discomfort, adaptability, and identity into a tangible form, creating a bridge between the introspective and the interactive.

The Non-digital conduit is the traditional pathway. It asks us to engage physically with our surroundings, to reflect, to make judgments that emerge from introspection. Our identity is forged in these interactions, grounded in tangible experiences and sensory feedback.

The Digital conduit, on the other hand, channels our identity through data-driven lenses. Online behaviors, quantified self-metrics, and algorithmic reflections of our habits all contribute to how we see ourselves and how the world sees us.

Yet, neither conduit alone is sufficient. The balance of these channels shapes what I call the 07-Aspiring figure—an emergent self that is both reflective and informed, rooted yet adaptive.
