For many investors, it was an interesting journey.

After experiencing the Asian Tiger Crisis, Y2K, 9/11, the Great Recession, the Pandemic, and other corrections, I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen the good times and the bad times over 27 years.

In this current crypto bull run, I plan to turn my cryptocurrency investment into passive income for life.

You see, anyone can have a portfolio of Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and other tokens. But what you need is passive income.

The world still runs on a fiat system. Some businesses accept cryptocurrencies, but for the most part, you still live in a fiat-driven world.

Last year about this time, I shared my initial plan to turn my crypto investment into passive income. This is an update to that.

You can’t create a plan and not make adjustments. The world as you see is suffering from inflation, high food prices, and higher interest rates. These affect your cryptocurrency investment.

Some are going so far as to say that EVE — the main character of Stellar Blade — is some sort of saviour from the DEI (meaning Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) landscape that video games have found themselves in. One where modern main characters are apparently too ugly, or feature too many minorities, or something.

After all, 2023’s GOTY nominees Baldur’s Gate 3, Alan Wake 2, Resident Evil 4, and Spider-Man 2 was just full of notoriously ugly characters wasn’t it?

But this conversation isn’t just false, it turns out it’s actually pretty reductive, because it just so happens that Stellar Blade is more than eye candy. I’ve played the Demo, and beaten the optional boss that unlocks in the main menu afterwards. While many have been focusing on EVE’s character model, for better or for worse, I’m here to assure you that the game is… good? Surprisingly so in fact, at least assuming that the vertical slice given to us in the demo is representative of the entire game.

The first thing that stands out is how gorgeous the game is, and I don’t just mean the unsettlingly-pretty cast. Although that even extends to the lone male example in the demo, Adam, for whatever it’s worth. Stellar Blade’s direction is brilliant, with a shockingly wide variety of enemies just in the demo alone that occupy just about every area of ‘horrifying alien’ that you can picture. There’s a flying squid that looks like it could be related to the thing in the movie ‘Life’ for example. There’s big, dramatic bosses that feature flesh saws, or lightning swords in the case of the one that closed out the demo’s main area.

Then there’s the smaller, more delicate enemies designed to whittle down your health between checkpoints. Some will look vaguely humanoid, but with giant swords or maces built into their contorted bodies. Others look like Dead Space relatives, with pincers sprouting out of their torso midway through battle. Some of these hide as dead, ash versions of themselves so you never know (without hitting them first) which are going to suddenly turn into a real enemy.

All of them have a strong throughline, straddling the line between far fetched and believable. In the world that Stellar Blade sets up, these are incredibly dangerous creatures that wipe out EVE’s squad in the opening minutes, and both the visuals and sound design match up to this expectation brilliantly. I was most impressed with the variety, as almost none of the enemies seemed to borrow move sets or timings. I expect this variety to die down as the release version goes on, or perhaps suspect that the Demo might’ve been altered slightly to feature more enemy types than is normal, for the sake of demonstration.

Performance was good as well, especially when you consider how games like Suicide Squad, Starfield, and Dragon’s Dogma 2 are all restricted to a rather unsteady 30fps on console. Here there’s a Quality mode that prioritises resolution and graphical fidelity, a Performance mode that prioritises framerate above all else, and finally a Balanced mode that straddles the two.

I was sat in Balanced for the entire demo and didn’t really have any problems whatsoever. The game may look or perform better in the other two modes, but this happy medium works well, especially if you have VRR on your TV to support. Stellar Blade was buttery smooth in this mode, and I didn’t suffer with any combat issues as a result of lost frames or input delay. Though it’s worth noting that the demo was made up of linear sections, with some very light exploration bolted on. So I can’t rightly say whether this standard will hold up in the bigger, more open areas.

What you’re left with is a game that looks gorgeous, with cutscenes and animations a particular standout, but that also performs well. At least in these early hours. If the April release of Stellar Blade follows in a similar manner, this could be one of the more impressive console releases of the year from a technical standpoint.

The post-apocalyptic stylings of this distant Earth look great too, with rubble and damaged cars peppering the landscape, slowly being dominated by weeds and foliage. Civilisation on Earth has all but ceased, and while the visual design won’t surprise anyone (especially if they’ve played any other post-apocalyptic games) it’s still very, very pretty. The trailer at the end of the demo showcased a huge variety of environments that don’t look like this too, so there’s hopefully no risk of getting bored.

So how does it play then? A lot has been made of Stellar Blades action combat, especially in the mostly-positive previews that landed a week or two ago. Comparisons to Nier, Sekiro, Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, and more might’ve set alarm bells ringing in some people’s ears. Is Stellar Blade trying too much? Does it lack an identity? No to both of those questions. Stellar Blade instead manages to balance its undeniable inspirations in a rather entertaining, stylish package.

There’s the classic mix of light and heavy attacks that you’ll expect to see in every game like this. But there’s also a dodge that — unlike something like Dark Souls — doesn’t appear to feature i-frames. Instead hit-boxes come into play, relying on player reactions instead of game mechanics. There’s also a parrying ability that you’re encouraged to use constantly, much in the same way as Lies of P or Sekiro. These four abilities are the main points of combat, and where Stellar Blade can play like a hack and slash, it borrows a lot from soulslikes.

Not in terms of difficulty I should stress. Even the hardest boss I faced — unlocked in the main menu after beating the demo — only took me three or four attempts to beat. I only died a dozen times across the whole demo, usually while I tried to work out a brand new enemy. Stellar Blade may borrow mechanics from From Software — even down to Estus-like healing items and checkpoints that respawn enemies — but it doesn’t feel anywhere near as oppressive. In part this is down to the comprehensive skill tree that EVE has, but I’d still recommend that experienced players roll up the difficulty if that’s the experience you’re looking for.

Early on I struggled slightly with the tight parry windows, so I immediately unlocked an ability that made these more forgiving. Problem solved. Counter attacking after dodging an unblockable was difficult against faster enemies, so I unlocked a skill that allowed me to do a very cool teleport and lunge when the enemy tried using one. Problem solved.

Stellar Blade’s skill tree leans more into the flashy, DMC style moves and it adds a new flavour to what can be a stilted, frustrating system in lesser games. You aren’t restricted to the classic ‘attack — block — attack — dodge — block’ loop of so many action games over the last decade, and Shift Up has provided ample upgrades through the skill system that feel great. At least on first glance. In fact, once you have an attack pattern down against even a boss, you can dominate them pretty gleefully.

The final boss of the demo — a massive creature wielding dual swords that pull lightning down from the sky — killed me pretty handily a few times. But then I managed to beat him practically without taking a hit. The posture system (of sorts) will stun enemies when you land enough successful parries, and bosses have multiple posture bars. So, nail those parries and counters, and you can near-stunlock even the biggest enemies in the game.

It’s a huge rush, and I was laughing out loud at the sheer spectacle of the excellent animations, the excellent soundtrack — which is great across the demo by the way — and the QTEs that punctuate these bigger fights.

So the combat is good, what about everything else? Well there’s the obligatory ‘climb the yellow ledges’ exploration that’s in pretty much every third person game these days, and there was even one example of a water area where you had to push around a floating plank, The Last of Us style. This stuff is clunkier than I’d like, especially the water section, and any platforming with EVE feels like an educated guess at best. I lost health to plummeting into an abyss more than a few times, in part due to the fact that in-air control of EVE feels non-existent. Thankfully this doesn’t return you to the last checkpoint, unless you were already close to death.

It’s an odd contrast, where the combat feels almost pitch-perfect but the exploration and platforming feels clumsy at best. I found myself enjoying the former much more than the latter as a result, despite feeling at home swinging from yellow-coloured bars, or navigating an array of yellow ledges.

I haven’t mentioned voice acting, characters, or story at all yet and that’s mostly because the demo doesn’t give a lot away. EVE lands on Earth with a squad of fellow fighters, almost all of whom are promptly murdered. The rest of the demo is spent hunting a creature that killed your friend, and that’s about the sum of it. I tried the game in English dub — which does have dedicated lip syncing — and it seemed fine. I restarted in the Korean dub and found that to be much better, but I found it irritating to read subtitles while trying to parry attacks or explore so I’m not sure which will be best for native English speakers. Your mileage may vary I suppose, but I do commend the dedication to provide lip syncing for multiple languages.

Make no mistake, the highlight of Stellar Blade is the visuals and the combat. Both are excellent and the combat particularly seems to be perfectly at home replicating popular systems, and then making them fit Shift Up’s vision for their game with flashy, over the top moves and combos that defy the usual format of these types of games. I went from curious about Stellar Blade, but not a likely purchaser, to a nailed on day-one buy just thanks to Shift Up’s surprisingly comprehensive demo.

That says a lot about why demos are great, but more importantly demonstrates that Stellar Blade is more than meets the eye. EVE’s character design may be what’s attracting attention, but the game sports more substance than I could have predicted prior to sitting down with it.

This weekend Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, caused a stir in media circles when she published a UK Mother’s Day photo taken by Prince William.

The photo shows Kate Middleton with her children in a happy, smiling moment. Several news agencies picked up the photo and distributed it widely.

The problem? It turns out the photo was faked — or at least heavily edited.

Kate Middleton eventually addressed the controversy, apologizing and stating that, “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing.”

The whole saga is a bit embarrassing for the royal family. But it’s also an indicator of a much bigger problem in the world of photography — and one that AI is about to make exponentially worse.

High Standards

News photographers like myself have always taken the veracity of images extremely seriously. Professional organizations for the trade, such as the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), have stringent editorial guidelines that ensure news photos are truthful.

Likewise, big agencies like Getty Images and the Associated Press have their own, similar standards.

Most people don’t realize how strict these standards are. They essentially prohibit any editing of an image beyond simple steps like correcting color balance or making small crops.

Any selective editing of a photo, removal of anything from an image, or even cropping that removes any essential part of the image is strictly forbidden.

Working within these guidelines can be a challenge. But it’s part of what makes photojournalistic images trustworthy.

Detecting manipulated images using technological means is difficult or impossible. So instead, our industry has focused on ensuring trust by creating rigorous codes of ethics and only accepting images from trusted photographers who abide by them consistently over years or decades.

Editing the Truth

You might have read many articles on how to become wealthy in the next bull market by investing in various cryptocurrency assets. But how many articles tell you how to keep your profits?

I understand you are eager to find the next crypto gems to make you rich enough to retire early and live your dream life.

But here is the truth; your greed may prevent you from achieving that goal. In bull markets, your greed determines how much money you make or lose.

If you have experienced a crypto bull market, you know how easily anyone can make money. You might start acting as a financial advisor to everyone around you.

You would show off your unrealized gains and persuade your friends and relatives to sell their valuable assets and invest in crypto. Yes, this is a common scenario in bull markets, as we have seen in the past. But I have a surprise for you.

If you have invested in altcoins over the past few months, you may have so much money in the next bull market that you will not know how to handle it. You could end up buying things that are not useful to you, such as JPEGs of apes, cars, rocks, and other worthless items.

You see, when the market is bullish, people tend to lose their financial discipline and common sense. But, in the bear market, most people spend wisely and think carefully.

While you can easily make money during the bull market, your greed won’t let you cash out.

Your mind will resist your desire to take profits from the market. It will constantly remind you of the gains you can make by staying active in the market. But do not fall for it.

During the bull market, most crypto influencers may advise you to hold on to your cryptocurrencies with a diamond hand because they will change your life.

Learn From The Mistakes of Others!

We have seen individuals who invested $1000 into crypto projects and turned it into over $30,000, only to see their investment plummet to less than $500 because they did not take profits.

This may sound strange, but those who invested in Terra Luna early enough can confirm how profitable their investments became when their $1000 investment turned into over $100,000.

However, during the Terra Luna crash, most people lost their life savings and became indebted due to greed.

One Reddit user wrote: “I have lost over $450,000, and I cannot pay my bank.”

Another user wrote: “I will lose my home soon, and I will become homeless.”

Personal Experience

Please note, I am not sharing this story out of regret, but as a warning so that others can avoid the same mistakes we made during the last bull market. I have learned my lessons and I am ready for the next bull run.

During the 2021 bull market, I bought some Terra Luna tokens (LUNA) and watched my small investment turn into a fortune. I felt like a genius and started making unrealistic price predictions.

I followed the advice of some crypto influencers who told us not to sell our LUNA tokens even when the price surged from about $0.96 to over $100. I became greedy and did not take profits at the market’s peak.

I was waiting for LUNA to hit my price target of $500, so I could have more money for vacations in Candyland or Jungle Safari. I guess I would not have taken profits even if the market had granted my wishes because I was too greedy.

Unfortunately, I was not alone! Even at the peak of the bull market, some other investors staked their LUNA tokens on different platforms to earn more rewards instead of selling and taking profits from the market.

Guess what happened next to the LUNA token? A few days after surging to nearly $120 and setting a new all-time high, we heard rumors about scandals and illegal activities that could cause the Terra Luna ecosystem to collapse.

Panic set in, and there was a massive sell-off from investors who had access to their LUNA tokens. I sold half of my LUNA tokens at around $50.

You might say I did not lose money since I bought them for less than a dollar, but wait a moment to hear what happened next.

Avoid Reinvesting Your Profits During a Bull Market

(The Devastating Collapse of Terra Luna)

After selling half of my LUNA tokens, I was fascinated by Unstoppable Domains and how they could revolutionize Web 3.0. I converted my USDT into Ethereum and bought many domain names, hoping to flip them for a profit. However, this turned out to be a bad investment as I have not sold a single domain name in almost two years.

Another mistake I made was buying more LUNA tokens when the price dropped to $10. I thought it was a bargain, but it was not. The token crashed further to about $0.00001675 and my assets became worthless.

One common mistake made by many crypto investors during the last bull market was storing their profits in UST stablecoin, owned by LUNA Terra.

The team claimed UST was an algorithmic stablecoin pegged to the dollar and you could stake it on Anchor protocol to earn high interest.

Interestingly, many investors who profited from selling LUNA tokens converted these profits into UST and staked them on various platforms to earn rewards.

This way, you will have sufficient funds to invest at the bottom of the next bear market.

What is it?

Starkli, pronounced Stark-lie, is a fast command-line interface that replaces the legacy starknet-CLI. Starkli is a standalone interface, that is, you can use it on its own, rather than as a component of another tool. If you’re not actually developing on Starknet and just want to interact, such as by sending transactions, then a standalone CLI might be more appropriate than an interface such as Cast, which is an integrated component of the Foundry development environment.

Who maintains it?

Starknet community contributor Jonathan Lei, the co-founder and CTO of zkLend.

Why should you care?

Starkli is a Starknet CLI similar to cairo-lang but written in Rust. It’s easier to install and to navigate, and has no dependencies. The tool supports Braavos and Argent X smart wallets, and has embedded support for RPC endpoints.

Starkli includes standard CLI functionality, such as the following:

• deploying accounts

• interacting with contracts

• getting Starknet data, such as information about blocks, transactions and more

starknet-devnet, starknet-devnet-rs

What is it?

A devnet is a Starknet instance that you run as a local node, which enables much quicker development than is possible using testnet, as well as providing privacy prior to launching on testnet.

Shardlabs, originally wrote starknet-devnet in Python, but they are now actively developing a version in Rust, starknet-devnet-rs. For now, the Python-based version is more feature-rich, with the most notable feature being the ability to fork the network at a given block, so if that’s important to you, then you need to use the Python-based version. However, starknet-devnet-rs runs more quickly, and the developers are working to bring it to feature parity with the Python-based starknet-devnet.

starknet-devnet-rs is the only version that is receiving new features.

Why should you care?

starknet-devnet and starknet-devnet-rs include some accounts that are already funded with an ERC-20 token that can be used to pay fees. The ERC-20 contract that defines this token is also included.

With starknet-devnet and starknet-devnet-rs You can do the following:

• Send transactions using pre-deployed, pre-funded accounts, which are included.

• Test tools.

• Test RPC requests.

• Deploy new contracts using an included Universal Deployer Contract (UDC).

Katana

What is it?

Katana, developed by the Dojo team, is an extremely fast devnet designed to support local development with Dojo, which is a gaming engine for Starknet. You can use Katana as a general purpose devnet as well. Katana lets developers test applications locally using the Katana network to test the transactions being sent during the game.

• Katana provides convenient RPC methods that you can use to change the network’s configuration as needed. For example, you can change the block time or allow zero-fee transactions.

• Katana supports version v0.3.0 of the Starknet JSON-RPC specifications, the latest version as of June 2023. Katana lets you use native Starknet JSON calls, such as starknet_getTransactionReceipt, starknet_getStorageAt

Scarb: The Cairo package manager

What is it?

The official package manager for Starknet.

Who maintains it?

Why should you care?

It makes life easier in the following ways:

• When installing Cairo packages, it handles adding, updating, and removing dependencies.

• You can use it to compile smart contracts.

• When creating your own Cairo package, it takes care of patching any libraries you need from Github, and lets you know if there’s a version mismatch. You can then use it to build and test your project, using the Cairo test runner. Building is quite fast.

• It includes the Cairo compiler, built-in, so unless you’re actually a compiler developer, you don’t need to set up any extra tooling.

• It includes a bundled binary of the Cairo language server, which you can use

• It works well with other tools in the Cairo ecosystem, such as Foundry and Dojo.

Developers are currently working on improving the way Scarb handles the management of versions, projects, and workspaces.

Starknet Foundry

What is it?

Starknet Foundry is a toolchain for developing Starknet smart contracts. It helps with writing, deploying, and testing your smart contracts.

Why should you care?

Starknet Foundry includes the following features:

• Forge, a fast testing framework. Forge achieves performance comparable to the Cairo Test Runner with a better user experience. You can test standalone functions in your smart contracts and embed complex deployment flows.

• Support for prints in contracts. According to the documentation, the debugging features will follow the addition of support in the Starknet compiler.

• The online Foundry Book, with lots of helpful information and guidance in writing and running tests and interacting with Starknet.

• Integrated compiling and dependency management, using Scarb.

• Cast, which the documentation refers to by its command name, `sncast`. Cast is an integrated CLI specifically designed for performing Starknet RPC calls, sending transactions and getting Starknet chain data. You can use Cast to declare, deploy, and interact with contracts using the Starknet JSON-RPC.

Many new features are coming soon, including fuzz testing, L1<>L2 messaging, and code coverage.

The Starknet Foundry Github repo has a roadmap showing new and in-development features, although it’s not clear if the checkmarks indicate features that are already implemented, or in active development.

What is it?

A tool primarily for testing Cairo code. You can also deploy contracts using scripts in JavaScript.

Why should you care?

Hardhat is a popular JavaScript development environment for Ethereum, and if you are already familiar with it and want to use it on Starknet, then this plugin can come in handy. You can run Starknet commands as tasks in Hardhat, such as compiling a Cairo contract.

Hardhat is integrated with a local devnet, so you only need to worry about writing your tests, in JavaScript, of course.

What is it?

Remix is a browser-based integrated development environment (IDE) for Ethereum that you can use for learning, experimenting and finding vulnerabilities in smart contracts, without installing anything. The Starknet Remix plugin lets you use Remix for testing Starknet smart contracts, so you can focus on learning Cairo and Starknet without the distraction of setting up a toolchain.

Refined $TVC Tokenomics 📈

Velocore V2 on Telos inherits the robust tokenomics of its predecessor while incorporating improvements centered around the user. The adjustments include:

1. Eliminating fixed emission allocations to the team, ensuring that all emissions go directly to liquidity providers.

2. Removing the rebase mechanism, thereby lowering the barriers for new users and reducing the inflationary pressure.

3. Distributing $veTVC tokens to strategic partners through a voter contract, which cannot be immediately sold, contributing to a stable market dynamics.

The initial supply of $TVC is set at 750,000 and $veTVC is set at 5,250,000. For the existing Velocore users, an allocation of 2,500,000 $veTVC is reserved, accounting for 41.7% of the total initial supply of $TVC and $veTVC, underlining the protocol’s user-centric ethos.

$TVC and $veTVC tokens allocated to the community and ecosystem are geared towards incentivizing contributions within the Velocore and Telos ecosystems and will be used for healthy community engagement and ecosystem synergy.

Emission Strategy: Sustainable Growth 🌱

A total of 4,000,000 $TVC tokens will be distributed for emissions, with a weekly emission start of 40,000 $TVC and an exponential decay rate of 0.5%. This ensures a sustainable increase in circulation without overwhelming the market. Users keen on forecasting can calculate weekly emissions using the previous week’s figures:

Emissions(week(N)) = Emissions(week(N-1)) × 0.995

Emissions are flexible and may be adjusted in response to market conditions and significant events, with any changes being communicated in advance to maintain transparency with the community.

A “Nerve-Wrecking” History

What makes a pesticide “visibly” effective? Highly toxic and lethal across generations and to multiple kinds of pests. In other words, an ideal weapon would be a magic shotgun that does not give any pests a chance.

How would this play out for the eternal enemy of every farmer — the tiny herbivorous crawlies? There are countless ways to annihilate insects, but not all produce the same visual result. In order to see an immediate, visceral result, some chemists figured out that we can attack an insect’s nervous system to instantly incapacitate it. This is how the famous “organophosphate” pesticides were born.

These chemicals work by inhibiting the universal neuromuscular enzyme acetylcholinesterase, causing the overstimulation of nerves and their subsequent exhaustion. Moreover, they are very potent in the sense that they can be absorbed through all surfaces on an insect body, meaning that there is near zero chance of escaping unharmed. If that sounds like something out of a horror movie to you, you would be correct.

Little did farmers know that these “magical” potions had evolved (or co-evolved) from some of the deadliest chemical weapons i.e. nerve agents used in wars and genocides. Unsurprisingly, mammals including humans use the same acetylcholinesterase enzyme in our nervous systems (although it is a bit different chemically due to the long history of divergent evolution). While there are 4B+ email accounts in the world, none actually belong to users since it’s the server that decides if a user is allowed to use their identity during the login, which is a privacy violation by design.

Eppie changes that with an open protocol decentralised email, giving Web3 users full account ownership. Users can create an account simply by accepting the BIP39 seed phrase generated by Eppie using the Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) key exchange protocol.

It is compatible with other DID standards and can send messages within Eppie’s own network or directly to any crypto wallet. The client application is also compatible with SMTP/ IMAP protocols, so users can connect and communicate through Web2 email services, but the emails never land on the server (i.e. going straight to the decentralised network).

Eppie has no servers. It works through a peer-to-peer network, where every device is a client. The application encrypts the data, breaks it to pieces and stores them on random nodes of the network — the other client machines. The address is also a public key. Only the user can retrieve the data using their matching private key. No one else has access to it, including Eppie’s developers.

A liquidity bootstrapping pool (LBP) is a fair and transparent way to distribute tokens to the community. For the RociFi Launch Party, 50,000,000 ROCI or 5% of total ROCI supply will be paired with 50,000 USDC in a Balancer-style liquidity pool on Ethereum Mainnet.

At the start of the LBP, there will be an initial token weight ratio of 99% ROCI: 1% USDC, making the cost to acquire ROCI relatively high. However, ROCI price will drop over the 72 hour period as the ratio auto-balances based on the pool’s price decay curve.

Price declines can be reversed by buying pressure from LBP participants. The price decay mechanism allows users to express their cost preference of ROCI allowing for a free-market approach to price discovery. However, the time constraint of 72 hours means users cannot wait too long or else miss the opportunity to participate in the LBP before ROCI hits the open market.

All of them have tough, inexpensive competition in the shape of a plain old notebook and pen. Why are they so great? Convenience and familiarity:

• Turn to the first blank page and start writing.

• Enjoy easily mixing writing with diagrams/quick sketches.

There are other reasons why a notebook and pen combination is great, but I’m focussing on these factors here. I’m also not going to make arguments for taking notes electronically. Well, maybe I’ll say they’re easier to back up and search, but I’ll stop there.

Instead, I’ll test how closely a selection of note-taking apps for the iPad get to the convenience of a notebook and pen. Because there are so many apps, I’m going to do that in two stages.

In stage 1, I’ll put 7 apps through a simple test to evaluate general viability, scoring each out of 5. It’s a sanity check.

In stage 2, the top three will be tested out by me taking notes about the Double Slit experiment. Commentary will be offered about the highs and lows of each, and I’ll choose my favourite.
