نخستین بار  در سال 1791 میلادی جان باربر(John Barber) شیوه ای به کار برد که با آن روش می شد از هوا جهت ایجاد حرکت استفاده کرد.در سال 1903 یک محقق نروژی (Aegidius Elling) نخستین توربین گازی را به صورت موفقیتآمیز ساخت.در این توربین ، یک کمپرسور دوار/دینامیک و تعدادی توربین به کار رفته بود.این توربینقادر به تولید (11hp)  8kW انرژی بود.

در سال 1904 الینگ طراحی خود را بهتر کرد و با کاهش دمای گاز خروجی از ° C 500 به ° C 400

توانست به تولید (44hp)  33kW انرژی دست یابد.این موتور با دور موتور  20,000 RPM کار می کرد.

توربین گازی الینگ بسیار مشابه موتور جت ویتل(Frank Whittle) بود که در سال 1930 درانگلستان ساخته شد.این موتور جت دارای یک کمپرسور گریز از مرکز و یک توربین محوری بود.در سال 1936 در آلمان ، اوهاین(Hans von Ohain) و هاهن(Max Hahn) اقدام به طراحیتوربینی کردند که در آن نیز یک کمپرسور گریز از مرکز و یک توربین با فاصله نزدیک به هم به کار رفتهبود.در نهایت کار ویتل و اوهاین منجر به ایجاد صنعت توربین سازی شد.

توربین گازی

شرط اساسی جهت تولید انرژی در یک توربین این است که فشار ورودی آن(inlet pressure) از فشارخروجی آن(outlet pressure) بالاتر باشد. جهت افزایش چنین فشاری در توربین به طور عمده ازکمپرسور استفاده می شود .بنابراین در توربین ، کمپرسور قبل از توربین قرار داده می شود.شکل روبرو ،نمونه ای از توربین تک محوری را نشان می دهد که در آن محور کمپرسور و توربین به هم متصل است.اگر سیال مورد استفاده در توربین  تنها هوا باشد در اینصورت سیال خروجی از کمپرسور در توربین منبسط شده و بدلیل اتلاف انرژی در کمپرسور وتوربین، انرژی خروجی ازتوربین کمتر از انرژی مصرفی در کمپرسور خواهد بود و در اینصورت سیستم متوقف خواهد شد.

اگر مقداری گاز به عنوان سوخت جهت جبران اتلاف انرژی به هوای مورد استفاده در توربین اضافه کنیم در این صورت پس از سوختن گاز، سیستم به کار خود ادامه می دهد ولی هیچ انرژی اضافی تولید نخواهد کرد.

جهت تولید انرژی در توربین گازی می بایست مقدار بیشتری گاز به آن اضافه کرد.این انرژی در محفظه احتراق (combustion chamber or combustor) که بین کمپرسور و توربین قرار دارد سوزانده می شود.
