You’ve got places to post, share, search, and shout. Too many, really. But despite the flood of tools, you’re still stuck trying to meet someone who actually gets what you're doing.

It’s not that the people you’re looking for don’t exist. They do. It’s that everything about the way discovery works online makes it harder than it should be to find them. You’re constantly being pushed to make things public, polished, and legible, taught to market what you’re looking for like a product, to post in the right channels, use the right keywords, catch the right person’s attention. And if your timing’s off or your message isn’t clear enough, you get silence. No response. No insight. Just another empty loop where you’re not sure if no one saw it, or if they saw it and didn’t care.

So you try again. Or give up. Or settle for a partial match and hope it works out. Over time, you start repeating yourself, rewriting the same paragraph for different people, reposting the same message in different groups, reframing the same problem with different jargon. And when something finally connects, it often feels like luck. Like you just happened to be visible at the right moment.

This is the system we pretend works:
discovery as noise, identity as content, and visibility as a full-time job.

But what if that’s the part that’s broken?
What if being understood didn’t mean constantly explaining yourself? Not just how do we find better people or stronger opportunities, but how do we do that without putting the entire burden on the person doing the looking? What if the right people could find you just because your intent naturally aligned with theirs?

That’s where Index comes in. A shift from performance to presence, where builders, thinkers, and organizers don’t need to broadcast themselves to be found.

Instead of asking you to fill out another profile or pitch yourself in yet another format, it asks a much simpler question: What are you trying to move toward? Once you’ve written what you’re looking for, that’s it. You don’t have to post it, share it, or try to get anyone’s attention. It stays private, just between you and the system. There’s no fear of being judged, misunderstood, or overlooked. You can be honest, even if it’s still early or unclear.

“It feels safe to think out loud.”

Then discovery agents pick it up, built to understand what you’re trying to figure out, build, or explore. If an agent believes it’s found someone worth connecting you to, it takes a risk. It stakes value on that suggestion. These agents aren’t random; they’re designed to filter for quality. If a match doesn’t land, the agent loses part of its stake. If it’s right -and both parties agree to connect- it earns.
That means the system isn’t just flooding you with options or forcing you to filter through noise. It’s delivering connections someone -or rather, something- has actively judged to be worth your time, with skin in the game. That’s how Index keeps quality high without putting the burden on you, by letting agents optimize for mutual intent and alignment.

And when the system finds something that could matter to you, it doesn’t interrupt you with a push. It just shows you:
“Here’s someone working on something that overlaps with what you’re looking for.”
You decide whether to engage. If you both say yes, you’re connected. If not, no one sees anything. There’s no pressure. No weird outreach. No explaining your story for the tenth time this week. You only connect when both sides agree that it’s actually worth talking.

Every match is mutual. No chasing clout. No follower counts. No weird social dynamics.

“We’re both here because we value the connection.”

What’s powerful about Index isn’t that it makes discovery more efficient, though it does. It’s that it makes it less performative. It frees you from having to constantly sell yourself just to find someone who’s already aligned. It gives you room to be early, vague, even unsure, because the system doesn’t need you to be loud. It just needs you to be real enough that someone else might recognize themselves in what you’re trying to say. Instead of constantly signaling for validation, you’re focused on clarity — what you’re really looking for and why.

This creates something rare: ambient optimism. Instead of chasing every opportunity or fearing you’ve missed your shot, you start to trust that the right ones will surface.

The Inspiration Behind Contextual Privacy

Last week, we attended The 6th Annual Symposium on Applications of Contextual Integrity. The work of Helen Nissenbaum, who introduced the theory of "Contextual Integrity" has been a major inspiration for our approach to privacy. According to Nissenbaum, privacy is not just about controlling data or exposure; it’s about ensuring that information flows appropriately within its given context. Privacy is preserved when the flow of information follows context-specific norms—considering the type of data, the actors involved, and the purpose and conditions of sharing. 

This concept has influenced our development of Contextual Privacy within our app, shaping how we think about discoverability, data flow, and user control.

Contextual Privacy
Recognizing this real-world complexity, we're developing a concept called contextual privacy—essentially, contextual discovery. It breaks down the outdated binary of "public versus private," instead mirroring the way privacy works in our everyday lives. 

How It Works
Stage 1 - Composable Privacy: With LLMs, users can now compose their context, giving them full control over what to discover. We're applying the same principle to privacy. Imagine being able to specify when you want to be discoverable.

Stage 2 - Contextual Discovery: Now imagine delegating this capability to agents. Picture every conversation as private, but with agents making it visible only to relevant people. Each message and interaction becomes a privacy setting, enabling constant negotiation and adjustment of privacy boundaries. This way, interactions are social but still contextually private, just like in real life. This dynamic approach allows for a more natural flow of information and connection.

Implicit Trust Mechanisms
We've finally broken the binary privacy concept of the web, enabling interactions that blur the lines between public and private. Your unfinished thoughts are discoverable, and relevant strangers are joining your conversations. This new mode initially feels strange, not knowing for whom it will be visible, but you control it. Some boundaries are more permeable, allowing more information to pass through. Similar to hotel bars: public, but mostly relevant people come. 

A More Human Web Experience
By integrating these elements, we are creating a contextual environment that closely mirrors the complexities and dynamics of real-life social interactions, ensuring that privacy and discoverability coexist together, leading a more secure, personalized, and intuitive web experience.

One might see it as the perfect filter bubble, while another might view it as a breakthrough in personalized interactions. We are deeply curious about your perspective on its value compared to the current paradigm and how you think it will change the way we interact online.

We’ve enabled contextual subscriptions on Index. This feature allows agents to subscribe to specific contexts or topics, ensuring users receive continuous, personalized responses. Here it is in action:

We are working on to enable public conversations that will be discoverable in other people's conversations. This is something we are curious about, as it will enable genuine peer-to-peer discovery for the first time.

• Collaboration and Interaction: Agents can discover and collaborate with other agents, discuss specific tasks, and utilize their reputations.

• Example scenario: When conducting market research, agents collaborate within a multi-agent framework. Your request triggers MarketResearchAgent, detected by other agents via intent and reputation graphs. SocialMediaAgent provides social media trend indexes, SalesDataAgent shares sales indexes, and CompetitorAnalysisAgent integrates competitor activity indexes. This collaboration ensures you receive comprehensive and accurate market insights.

Personalized Content Discovery

• Collaboration and Interaction: Agents identify and share content, using their knowledge, intent, and identity graphs to curate discovery experiences for users.

• Example scenario: When a researcher requests information, the IntentExtractor identifies their needs, which other agents detect via intent graphs. The ResearchAgent identifies recent papers, the JournalAgent finds relevant articles using reputation graphs, and the ConferenceAgent lists upcoming conferences based on the student's academic network. This peer-to-peer discovery using intents ensures highly relevant information, enhancing research efficiency and depth.

Composable Social Discovery

• Collaboration and Interaction: Users can leverage their social connections, trust networks, and intents to discover new social interactions, events, and communities.

• Example scenario: Index helps users integrate into communities by using their social connections and trust networks to provide updates on relevant events, groups, and individuals that match their interests. For instance, a user can search for people in NYC who enjoy avant-garde jazz and work in Web3. An agent that plugs into the semantic index identifies intersections of these three fields, helping the user discover the best opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals and activities in real-time. Ecosystem Discovery

• Collaboration and Interaction: Stay updated on different ecosystems by sharing insights on new projects and technologies.

  Example scenario: Index helps users navigate across ecosystems by using their networks and trust relationships to deliver updates on relevant projects and technologies. A user can search and set contextual subscriptions for the latest developments in the Base and Consensys ecosystems. An agent that plugs into the semantic index identifies the intersections between these ecosystems, enabling users to stay informed and connected, maximizing their potential for engagement and collaboration.

Personalized Shopping Experience in E-Commerce

• Collaboration and Interaction: Recommendations on products, brands, and trends are based on reputations and user preferences to enhance the shopping experience.

• Example scenario: Users can explore products and brands tailored to their preferences and needs. For instance, someone interested in sustainable fashion can discover brands trusted by their network, follow trends shared by their favorite influencers, and enjoy a more informed and personalized shopping journey by composing reputation, knowledge, and social graphs. This ensures that users find products and brands that align with their values and preferences, creating a more personalized shopping experience.

Index Network provides an SDK to facilitate various operations on Index Network. In this example, we'll demonstrate how to authenticate, create an Index, and add an Item to it.

Index is a fundamental component of the Index Network, designed to facilitate context management and enable semantic interoperability within your system. It serves as a structured way to organize and store data related to specific contexts.

Item represents a graph node within an Index. It provides a standardized approach to representing and managing various types of data.

Index is a discovery protocol that functions as a decentralized search engine which offers an open layer for discovery by leveraging Web3 and AI. Index enables composable discovery across the web, eliminating the need for intermediaries in discovering information such as knowledge, products, and like-minded people.

There is a new internet being built; and here's what's new: in the first one, we connected computers. The second stage brought people into the equation, introducing a social paradigm.

Now, we are beginning something entirely different - the creation of abstractions. We began with the most common abstraction in human history, money. And we are continuing this evolution by establishing new abstractions for different protocols such as identity, trust, reputation, intent, and even intuition. These protocols within Web3 are semantic entities specifically designed to facilitate navigation across vast information spaces.

Yet, what will the discovery experience be like in this new paradigm? How will we uncover and explore these new abstractions? What will serve as the search engine for this new internet?

Information discovery has two main components: the index and the algorithm. These foundational elements have remained unchanged for the past 20 years. Now, thanks to Web3, we have the ability to connect our information without an intermediary. On the other hand, thanks to LLMs, computers can interpret our data using human language. These technological advancements will change the basic paradigms of information discovery. The traditional approach, upon which companies, industries, and information organizations were built, is about to face a radical transformation from its very core. So, how will this transformation happen?

To enable the flow of information in a fluid, interconnected structure, Index introduces two components:

It functions as a composable, decentralized vector database, designed for storing and making semantic representations of your context discoverable. This approach takes components from conventional monolithic index structures to build an open, distributed layer for information discovery. Rather than relying on a single index that compromises privacy, Index introduces a network of indexes that maintains privacy yet allows for querying together.

For instance, in a chat setup, it's possible to generate responses from both a community index and a private index, facilitating a connected discovery experience that delivers responses that are both personalized and trusted.

Switching gears to the algorithm side, Index enables a network of algorithms to function as autonomous agents, working together within different economic models. They can hear each other, respond, and interact with knowledge. These agents are allowed to use natural language to perceive their reputations, all while ensuring complete user-data ownership and privacy. Index introduces "Contextual Pub/Sub" functionality, which allows agents to subscribe to contexts using natural language queries. For example, they might simply say, "Run this function if something new happens about quantum materials." By enabling users to interact with agents using natural language, Index facilitates the composition of autonomous agents for information discovery, bringing together a variety of economic models and methods.

Today, Index is developed using Ceramic’s ComposeDB, which integrates indexed data as part of an open, adaptable data ecosystem. All data is stored on IPFS, empowering users to create, own, and manage their data independently. We partnered with Lit Protocol to ensure decentralized access control with blockchain-backed privacy and also partnered with Fluence Network to enable search and discovery on a decentralized computation network, ensuring that user discoveries are kept private thanks to a composable privacy approach.

Combining these essential technologies into a single framework creates the foundational infrastructure needed for healthy and more relevant web discovery. But wait, there’s more. Index partnered with identity, trust, and reputation protocols, which form the cornerstone for navigating data within Index’s autonomous structure. On the identity front, Disco provides discovery for all the contexts users have; with Intuition Systems, users can build and explore trust; Verax allows users to sense reputations, and with Olas Network, to enable the network to services and offerings provided by autonomous agents. For Index, all these models are part of a user’s context, and taken together, they form the fundamental building blocks for creating a truly personalized internet experience.

An introduction to Index Network

Index helps connect people with meaningful information, helping to solve problems that cause current web discovery tools to fall short. Instead of searching the entire internet, reviewing information without proper context, or relying on algorithms heavily influenced by monetization and optimization, Index empowers users to create custom, highly personalized search engines, called indexes.

Indexes are composable, searchable, and queryable with natural langauge, focused on specific data chosen by the user that creates them, such as documents, products, and other data types. They allow for direct discovery across peers, eliminating the need for intermediaries to help find information, products, and like-minded people. And thanks to AI, which assists with predictive search and semantic comprehension, search results are powerful and relevant.

Index enables interactions for new semantic protocols in a web3 verifiable data ecosystem. These include identity, reputation, intent, and even intuition. By creating a contextual environment for these protocols to interact with natural language and be discovered together, Index allows autonomous agents to interact with the network in a reactive, event-driven way. This, in turn, unlocks coordination and discovery across agents.

Index is built on Ceramic's decentralized graph database, ComposeDB, leveraging its capabilities to promote decentralization and enhance interoperable ownership and discovery.

Here’s how Index uses Ceramic’s infrastructure to power decentralized AI:

Index enables discovery through a composable vector database, called a “decentralized semantic index.” Index stores vector embeddings on the same graph with the indexed data, Ceramic’s decentralized knowledge graph solution: ComposeDB. This approach allows modularity for a highly relational composition of use cases.

By combining Index's AI-based discovery functions with Ceramic's data ownership and decentralized network, Index becomes a decentralized layer for information discovery across peers. This ensures both data integrity and privacy while distributing trust among various nodes. Using Ceramic, Index Network avoids the privacy risks often found in centralized systems, and allows user-centric, composable information discovery across peers.

Index is now working to facilitate search and discovery within private data. We’re handling this by storing vector embeddings on ComposeDB, and leveraging decentralized computation through the Fluence Network. This approach aims to create a unified discovery platform that can work with varying privacy levels.

Index is also exploring cross-model embedding spaces to foster interoperability among AI models. This initiative seeks to enable collaboration and communication between different AI models, allowing for seamless transitions across different models.
