#5 | Crypto Godwin v. AI Malthus

Intro-spection

If technology is anything, it's more than fiber, glass, buzz, bits, and autumn Apple events. It delivers to us a sense of timeliness, intuition, innovation and often times, long slumbering philosophical sentiment.

William Godwin and Thomas Malthus were political philosophers at the peek of The Enlightenment. Whereas the sentiments in today's nutshell-like compression would characterize the former championing anarchy, the latter was an advocate of population control. Contextually, there's a deep trench that would familiarize ourselves greatly if we were to consider all the weights to the biases, however, even in a kind of journalistic zip file, the spirit remains barely corrupted over time with loss of data.

We are familiar in modernity with both more control as a panacea and less control as one. Those calling either a panacea are in the mood to affirm skepticism for. However, the spirit endures and they graft the form of modernity's invocations: artificial intelligence and encryption.

With the chants from the digital stands that cry "x is a problem hunting for a solution". "y is a scam", there comes with these platitudes a broken bell curve. Noise drowns out the signal, yet the signal endures, reaching who it needs to. It's easy to make these technologies adversarial to one another, as in our adversarial time, the constant impulse to immortalize new symbols representing our liberation or damnation carry on. Untethered crypto as one could best imagine will individually harm an individual whose lost their private key but will compromise the centuries-long monopoly twixt nation-states and money. Untethered AI will imaginably compromise everyone. How, is the only black-box scenario here.

However, while we build this new vehicle to a bizarre and fascinating future, perhaps we only need do is provoke a notion of equilibrium. AI unconstrained will accelerate us to places we many survive and constrained crypto will accelerate us to places dormant and sterile where no one thrives.

Perhaps the Nash Equilibrium here is to let both flourish cautiously, guiding one to inform the other.

🪅 Pinata Spotlight

Pinata in short is one the first persistence layers that empowers the storage protocol of IPFS to usability, low-latency with gateways. Truth is IPFS is permanent, adjacent. An IPFS node will secure your data, however, if the node is not you, deletion is left to chance as to when that may occur. Not when, which indeed is one of the indelible performance enhancers that IPFS brings, moving data storage to content-specific rather than location-specific.
Digressing, holding encrypted data that's Merkle-friendly is a blessing. Again, self-custody will optimize your control. If you do not want such responsibility, there are a few great services, Pinata being our spotlight.

Pinata, at its core, is a pinning service, meaning the pinning of content insures there is always a viable gateway which ensures retrieval. These gateways are also browser-agnostic. What this means is for as much of a fan as I am of Brave, we haven't quite yet achieved the web-speed or reliability of raw ipfs urls and dlinks. Pinning satisfies this expectation with persistence.

Persistence, however, is not the only trick in the castle. Pinata also offers:

I've used Pinata for a few years now for a storage redundancy to cloud services for professional purposes and a dropbox alternative for personal reasons.

BUILD

Thirdweb is an incredible tool for web3 development and frameworks. We use their platform to build out first an NFT collection contract, followed by a NFT Marketplace contract, to then build a fully functional website + embeddable widget.

The entire tutorial can be accessed here from our Charmverse Space.

Of note, we went through applying an additional feature working with Crossmint, which would allow NFTs and instant 'Pay with Credit Card' feature. Albeit, after working through a demo and testing, there's a limiting factor of needing to be apart of the platform itself with an account, even as a user, not just a creator, didn't provoke an iterative spirit to reduce friction enough to highlight frictionless crypto experiences. We will keep an eye on Crossmint, hoping they can successfully further pursue the trajectory they are on.

Ordinals

Ordinals is the modern version of hashing a secondary data layer atop BTC core. Both Counterparty and Ascribe offered BTC NFT's (digital collectibles) in the mid-2010's, their use case and size already on top of nascent crypto-currency made it ahead of the curve for a 'stickiness' movement.

Stacks, an open-source platform, established in 2018, makes Ordinals possible by giving a Turing-complete layer that Ethereum and Dfinity have been using since their respected inceptions. In short, this layer boosts Bitcoin from 'store of value', to an algorithm agnostic compute protocol that also stores value.

The arms race to engineer via API and marketing aperture AI into every piece of code is on. Whether be browser extension, browser, website, SaaS, app, dapp, protocol, software, firmware, bitware, malware, wetware, the instantiation of neural nets blanketing every inching bit striving to survive and keep apace, nothing by human convention is a sacred technological cow during this era of artificial arming.

Least of all the tools we use to build, what we build - seemingly why we build does indeed get lost and that is definitely for another conversation. Albeit, from search, image-creation, sound engineering, site-building, text-to-infinity does seem inevitable.

However, text-to-will is still a fleshy analogue. To understand the tools, to comprehend the rules before bending to break them...certainly, the ability to filter out the most useful to least useful could in fact beg the prompt:

"Please provide me the most state of the art filtering tool that is both advanced and stable to manage the proliferation of current AI tools available on the web - thank you !"

It will be best to practice aggression, pragmatism and caution pursuing a tensor web. Just as not all data deserves to be on a blockchain just as not all of our cellular data exists as a nucleotide, we can apply the same temperament to artificial intelligence.

We must always wield the last inch of the tool or be condemned to become one.

Rentable NFTs are an interesting concept if you first consider where NFTs have moved in terms of utility. The ability to refactor and reuse NFTs as a security functionary rather than the 'flex' of mere ownership is perhaps a clearer practicality to consider. Temporary gating might be a very useful application in an internet world of temporary roles.

Intro

We all know what FAANG 🦷 is by now but do they have the teeth to adapt? Creative enterprises will emerge, from the ranks of tied-hands at Google now they must scramble to respond to ChatGPT. Amazon must tinker with NFT markets now that they dominate the physical goods supply chain. Meta (ahead of the curve) considers interoperability while building Nintendo Wii Avatars but with legs.

How does the macro atomize ⚛️ as these latest technologies empower the next generation of workforce, from platform to protocol?

A handful of companies make up a handful of monopolies. However, if their influence on the aggregate of tech is what is generally being reported, then the spirit and sentiment of tech is perhaps governed by a panoply of conformed luddism larping as planned obsolescence.

However, there are other possibilities. Just as there are many infinities, so be it there are many monopolies and with the automation democracy accelerating, the atomization of ascending powerful 'solopreneurs' manifests to the forefront.

Tech is a civilization of futuring: who owns or governs what, where do certain technologies burn out and fade away, some maintain, and others mold in syncopation with zeitgeist. The macros scramble to change enough to survives, the mesos maintain, the micros are powered by change itself. Each will lay into their strengths and avoid weaknesses. What has teeth in the end? Specifically, difficult to say. What will generally - that which most likely understands the ethic of persistence for all seasons.

Build

The build this week is leaner than last week, as the purpose for this tutorial is to expose you to multiple tools that can quickly give you dynamism with your NFTs and expand upon use-cases for your business.

The first part is to simply use Polygon's NFT Minting Tool to produce either a 721 or bulk mint 1155. In this direct case, a single NFT is pertinent.

Prerequisite (Basic knowledge of NFTs and Browser wallets (Rainbow, Metamask, Trust)
NOTE: This will not cost you any $$$ as it is on Polygon and they are covering minting expenses.

Go to the website https://mint.dehidden.com/
Choose quick Mint (assuming you have an image/file in mind for minting // JPG, PNG, JPEG, GIF, SVG, MP4, WEBM, WEBP, MP3, WAV, OGG, GLTF, GLB // are acceptable files).
Click 'Mint' (if not connected, you will be prompted to connect to Polygon Network).
Once minted.

Now that you have your minted NFT, there are a few additional utilities you can add to your token on the platform if you wish, such as:

Personalize ownership via social media verification
Order a cool physically-encased version of your NFT from PHYGITAL
Send as an airdrop
Add unlockable content to your token with a website url

Now, we are not going to utilize these utilities from this site, however, we are going to utilize similar tools from Submarine.me (NOTE: This service is on a pricing tier, however, if you sign up and use promo code SUB30 you can get a free month to try it out!)

1) Create/Sign-in to account

2) Click on Submarine New Files

3) For this exercise, we will choose Location

4) Make sure to use the NFT you just minted to keep things lucid.

5) Fill in fields accordingly and upload your raw image you minted as NFT.

6) Choose between an address or Longitude/Latitude

7) Fill everything out, pick images for the UX/UI if you wish, when complete it will look something like this:

8) Once you've completed the creation of the Location-based access, check out your landing page created for you by Submarine. Give it a try. If you placed the location within your own proximity you should have successful access to the NFT image. If you are outside the range, you should successfully be denied access with a banner at the top of your page that looks something like this:

In general, these applications could provide unique POAP (Proof-of-Attendance Protocol) and NFT-gating events. Think of ticketing, event-based IRL scavengers hunts, team-building, or online web3 version of 2FA. The abstraction allows for a great deal of business leverage with this new technology with little coding understanding!

Winter has come but that is where the bravest make their mark. Perhaps it is also where the truest fires can be seen. We bring to you not ICO's or Tokens but companies and organizations who brave the hype-cycle lulls with fierce innovation and true-north spirit.

B I C O N O M Y S P O T L I G H T

There's so much banter about making web3 usable, more user-friendly, less inclined for the power-user. Truth is there are several strokes before this technology becomes magic, akin to the Carl Sagan's quote:

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled.

Albeit, in order for sufficiently advanced tech to become magic, it must become invisible and before that stable/functional. Biconomy is a project towards a path of invisibility.

From an engineering perspective, the friction to move denizens of the web to a web3 ethos requires resolution in:

account abstraction
meta-transactions
gasless transactions
batched transactions
multi-chain relayers
smart-contract wallets

If you do not know what this means that is precisely the notion. These pain-points make up the aggregate of 'knowledge payload' one must be inclined to know using crypto-wallets and web3 logins over the past 6 years or so, with limited iterations along the way and usually additional knowledge with security and risk-management.

The Biconomy Team's efforts to cloak this complexity and bring blockchain settlement, security, and privacy to payments and data is remarkable.
