The goal of this piece is to recap important web3 narratives from Q1. Historical context is essential, and by studying the past, you can better predict the future. I'll analyze three essential concepts from this past quarter but have listed a few others for you to learn about below.

Here is today's roadmap:

Decentralization Debate

Institutions Keep Experimenting

Governments & Regulation

P.S. If you are new here, look through this web3 starter guide to get up to speed.

Decentralization Debate

Decentralization is a buzzword. No one knows what it means, but it's provocative and gets the people going. There are strong opinions on both sides of the debate. Pro-decentralization folks say it is a way to overcome big tech, big government, or any other institution with an outsized influence. They also state that having open blockchains removes many of the problems we face with web2 today. For example, censorship resistance for social applications has been specifically top of mind lately...

https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1507041396242407424

Pro-centralization folks question if decentralization is even feasible or if it can deliver real consumer value. They also argue that web3 today is not decentralized itself, but owned by the same traditional centralized entities that operate web2.

https://twitter.com/jack/status/1473139010197508098

I learned a few things from this debate over the past few months…

Most crypto projects start centralized then become decentralized. This is called progressive decentralization. In the early days of Bitcoin, a small subset of developers were the only ones running it. Ethereum started with a small group of developers, and even today, its Founder Vitalik Buterin has an outsized influence on the project's roadmap - albeit less so over time.

There will be parts of web3 that are centralized and parts that are decentralized. It's helpful that Coinbase exists (centralized) and Uniswap (decentralized). Opensea is one of the most successful platforms (centralized) but is built on chains like Ethereum and Solana that are open-source (decentralized).

As builders, we should be thinking about user behavior. People want products that are intuitive, will make them money, or connect them with like-minded people. Ordinary people won't care what's centralized or decentralized. They will care if it accomplishes a specific job to be done.

"The overall point is that there will be both centralized and decentralized products which help create an open financial system, just like ISPs (centralized) and browsers (decentralized) both play a key role in the internet ecosystem. It's a false dichotomy to pit one against the other because both are a part of the solution." - Brian Armstrong.

People like things that are centralized and decentralized. I like having my bank account managed by a trusted third party. I don't mind having YouTube taking my data and recommending good videos. Spotify has given me so much value by recommending me bangers by being a centralized music platform.

I also like the fact that I can invest in projects and tokens that are more accessible to me now because they are more open from the onset. Open source code in web3 has led to a lot of creativity. You are starting to see academic researchers on social blockchains like Deso review the content and provide recommendations on ways to improve their products' algorithms. That would be nearly impossible at a traditional web2 company.

Over time, I think that centralized entities will become more decentralized. They will adapt to the user, customer, and regulatory demands to open parts of their ecosystem.

You can read more about these alternative takes below:

Moxie Marlinspike's critique

Chris Dixon's response

Brian Armstrong's take

My own takes here and here

Institutions Keep Experimenting

I am biased because I work at LinkedIn, but I believe web2 companies can be the bridge for their user base to explore web3 technologies (e.g., tokens, NFTs, etc.). In terms of scale, web3 is small (~350-400M users) compared to the broader internet today (~4.5B users).

In December, I predicted continued investment and exploration from incumbents in 2022. This has outpaced my previous expectations. I believe a set of successful products with embedded web3 technologies from these large incumbents will drive the next wave of users into this space (e.g. NFTs on Instagram, tokens on a social platform, etc).

Here are just a few of those headlines and associated articles below:

Facebook owner Meta dives into NFT digital collectibles craze

Global Crypto Solutions - Stripe

Qualcomm Sets Up $100M Fund for Metaverse Investments

Google Cloud launches new dedicated Digital Assets Team

Disney Is Beefing Up its NFT Team As Digital Collectibles Boom

Goldman announces OTC crypto trade with Galaxy Digital

Forging the decentralized future: Bessemer's commitment to web3

https://twitter.com/IBTimes/status/1508714776410603531

You get the point. I've been speaking to quite a few of these folks; no one knows what they are doing. Although, many are curious. They are putting a small team of interested people on these "special projects." Many of these experiments will fail. That's okay. The fact that these large companies are experimenting is a win. It will spur more creativity, drive more professionalism to the industry, and provide the millions (if not billions) of users access to test out these new technologies.

Governments & Regulation

"Technology will always move faster than lawmakers can regulate. The answer to the dilemma is to listen to the experts at the outset, and be vigilant in updating laws to match current technological realities." - Margaret O'Mara.

Studying the history of the internet to find signals of how web3 may mature has been interesting. Today's internet was primarily built in the 1990s when the government opened up the internet to commercial activity and designed rules to govern its infrastructure. Two laws still impacting us today are Section 230 and the Communications Decency Act. Both were written in 1996, before Amazon, Google, Facebook, and others were created. Both of these laws are being challenged due to concerns about how much power these big tech companies have accumulated. Despite recent pushback, the fact that these existed first led to tremendous innovation that has benefited the majority of the world.

In the late 1990s, Silicon Valley was an outsider lobbying lawmakers to protect their electronic frontier. In the early 2020s, the same narrative is being used for web3. What will be the industry's version of Section 230 and the Communications Decency Act? Will it be possible to craft intelligent legislation that will not have a few negative second-order consequences? Probably not. Will it set the groundwork for more companies to be created, more investors to deploy capital in the space, and more talent to enter into web3? Probably.

Here are a few noteworthy events that happened this past quarter:

President Biden signed an Executive Order on ensuring the responsible development of digital assets

Ukraine legalizes cryptocurrency as it receives millions in crypto donations

Britain will reveal crypto regulation plans in the coming weeks

India announced a crypto tax

BlockFi Agrees to Pay $100 Million in Penalties and Pursue Registration of its Crypto Lending Product

It’s slightly adjacent to government regulation, but I was excited about how the US last week arrested and charged two twenty-two year olds for launching a NFT project, making promises, collecting $1.1m before disappearing. As we have spoken about previously, blockchains are public databases. All of the transactions are recorded. Trying to commit fraud is a bad idea in this ecosystem. I hope that more of the people trying to make a quick buck and take advantage of investors will take note of this moving forward.

Not all of these moves from regulatory bodies be the best for the industry. However, it is positive that this topic is becoming a higher priority for governments worldwide.

Bonus

If you don’t like Mark Zuckerburg, I’d encourage you to watch a bit of this video. I have gained a lot of empathy for him in this podcast from Tim Ferriss and this one with Lex Fridman. Friends that have worked at Meta have shared positive things about him as well. I think he’s made some bad decisions, but if I was in his shoes, I would probably mess some things up too.

There is a lot of noise, hype, and incentive-driven narratives that dominate the news…

“Some point to crypto’s shortcomings as evidence the entire effort is a scam, but this misses the point. Historically, when technological innovation has led to financial innovation ahead of regulation, we have seen world-changing innovation, then mania, fraud, a crash, a regulatory framework and then a slow build toward lasting value (see: early stock markets of 1600s Amsterdam). Crypto appears no different. There are tokens of dubious quality. There are pockets of over-hype. But as with all other technology revolutions, there will also be enduring companies created in this time.” - Source

For me, it’s been helpful to ground myself in the problems that currently exist for a broad swath of archetypes, and then think through how web3 can help solve those problems. By focusing on the problem, my hope is that you will have that “aha” moment many people feel as they learn more about this space. Below are a few of those examples:

Creators, artists, and musicians are able to monetize through alternative methods (e.g. NFTs, Tokens, DeSo)

Developers can build on open protocols leading to rapid product development (i.e. composability)

Businesses can find alternative revenue streams to supplement their existing business model (e.g. Adidas NFT launch, Reddit Karma points)

Governments can more clearly track economic activity within their jurisdictions

Community organizers can tie monetary incentives to increase the value of their groups (e.g. DAOs)

Individuals can own their own identity (e.g. wallets, ENS, NFTs)

I know I just used a ton of jargon and terminology that may not make sense. Let’s jump into that now. In the next section, my goal is to ground us in the correct language to allow you to get comfortable with how web3 operates.

How does Web3 operate?

Learning the language is the first step. I am still personally quite intimidated by the lingo that is used. Some of the ideas are so abstract that I question what is truly underneath them. Also, these phases can change in meaning over time. What I like to recommend for friends to do is to buy their first NFT or purchase their ENS name. Let’s walk through both of them below.

Buying an NFT

A lot of people buy NFTs to flip them and earn a return. I try to do this and haven’t seen much success monetarily yet - I literally spent $2k+ on this Koala which is now priced at ~$300. NGMI. As you are starting I would instead go support one of your favorite artists, check out the community on Twitter of the NFT you’re buying, or buy something that literally just looks pretty.

By doing this you get to interact and set up the products and platforms we’ve mentioned above. Follow the steps below and click through the associated links to help you if you run into any issues:

You have to buy some Etheruem in Coinbase (link)

You have to set up a Metamask (link)

You have to send Etheruem from Coinbase to Metamask (link)

You have to connect your Metamask to Opensea (link)

You can go to your Rainbow wallet and see your NFT (link)

Here’s a video going through this entire flow. Please do not spend any money that you do not have. Think about the money invested here as education rather than a financial investment.

Buying an ENS domain

ENS stands for Ethereum Name Service. Your ENS acts similarly to setting up a domain name. Instead of jaysingh.com, you can purchase rights to jaysingh.eth. Your ENS allows you to a.) transfer funds to a name instead of an address (e.g. you can send $ directly to jaysingh.eth, instead of a 12 digit numerical number) and b.) provides a proxy for your identity in web3 (e.g. you see many folks on Twitter changing their display name to their .eth addresses, this acts as a signal to demonstrate you are a part of the web3 community). Follow the steps below to purchase your ENS:

You have to buy some Etheruem in Coinbase (link)

You have to set up a Metamask (link)

You have to send Etheruem from Coinbase to Metamask (link)

You have to go to ens.domains and search the name you would like (link)

Connect your Metamask to ENS

If the name is available, register your ENS

You can go to your Rainbow wallet and see your ENS name (link)

Please do not spend any money that you do not have.

Despite being excited to go over to someone’s house, as bedtime approached I would start losing my shit.

Everything was great leading up to it, but inevitably as bedtime came up, I’d start to get a bit nervous. To this day I’m not sure what it was, but the issue of falling asleep at friends’ houses persisted for years later.

The routine was eerily similar. I’d get to bed, pretend to fall asleep, get lost in my thoughts, check the clock in the room, and repeat for hours. It would take until 2-3 am when I had enough and had to call in backup: my mom, who was usually at least a 30-minute drive away from me.

Remember it was 2 am. And also remember, there was absolutely nothing wrong with me other than the fact I couldn't fall asleep. However, time and time again my mom would pick up the phone and soothe me.

She’d tell me it’s okay. Things will be fine. To count sheep, to hide the clock, and to try to fall asleep again. I would eventually end up asleep. I think it was only because I knew my mom knew I was struggling. I had shared how I was feeling, in this case, a bit too much, but I sensed a level of connection with her, as many mothers and sons do.

This connection was not the same feeling I would have with my father. A similar situation years later, with the same issues, with the same problems, I didn't feel comfortable speaking to him about this.

This mentality persists even today. Rarely will I go to my dad for emotional advice - if anything, it will be more practical such as taxes, business, etc. More “dad” topics.

For everything else, it will always be my mom. I would have to consciously tell myself “okay Jay, go talk to Papa about this” but rarely is it my first consideration. This brought up an important question for me.

Why do I not feel comfortable sharing my feelings with the man who is meant to be the closest to me in my life?

It’s not because my dad didn’t love me. On the contrary. He’s sacrificed so much of his life to providing for his family. He’s sacrificed his own happiness for ours. He’s lived the classic immigrant life; live a hard life yourself to create an easy life for your kids.

The language of vulnerability

I didn’t go to my dad for these issues because I knew he didn’t know how to talk about it. He didn’t have the tools to be vulnerable; to express emotions and feelings, which in turn, would help me do the same.

Men, especially immigrants, can have generations of trauma built in them. It goes back to our grandfathers, and their fathers. It goes back to the history of men being providers. The hunters. The breadwinners. The “men of the house”. We should provide empathy to our fathers and the older generation of men in our lives because they may not have had the tools to open up.

My father has never been one to check in with me, ask me how I’m doing, nor express appreciation for my achievements - at least to my face. As I’ve grown up I’ve recognized that much of my motivation and insecurity is derived by the need to please my father. To make him say he’s proud of me. To express his love for me. But, how could I expect him to share his love for me if he never was taught what love was?

This is when I got curious. If I am being impacted by my father, how was he impacted by his? And even further, how was his father impacted by the men in his life?

Over a couple of drinks

One evening I asked my dad to share more about his dad. We called him Dada. Dada has since passed away, leaving us in the summer of 2020 at the age of 91.

Dada was an angry man. I heard stories of him beating my father almost every day growing up. Papa once told me that after fooling around in school and showing up late one day, his father hit him in the head with the heel of a shoe. A scar that sticks with him today. Dada also left a mess for the rest of his kids. Many of them, when you meet them today, seem spent and tired, spending much of their lives trying to take care of this man.

This same evening, my dad and I had smoked a joint and had a few drinks. These are the times when the walls come down for Papa. I asked if Dada ever told him he loved him. Papa laughed, “how could he tell me he loved me if he never knew what love was himself?”.

I asked about Dada’s family. How was he raised?

“When Dada was one his mother passed away. When he was nine his father passed away. He grew up with family members, bouncing around from house to house. I doubt anyone ever told Dada they loved him.” - Papa

No one ever spoke to Dada about his feelings. If no one told him the words, the language, and the expression of love and emotional connections, how could he provide it to others?

These are “tools” that men are only learning now in our generation today. A generation that doesn’t have to worry about existential threats like surviving, not getting beat, or putting food on the table. That generation is where I find myself in.

Leisure and vocabulary

Rob Henderson does a wonderful job highlighting a similar problem in a different context. He proposed in this article titled “The Theory of the Leisure Class” that folks who have a higher level of education are more likely to enhance their vocabulary.

“Your typical middle-class American could not tell you what “heteronormative” or “cisgender” means. But if you visit Harvard, you’ll find plenty of rich 19-year-olds who will eagerly explain them to you. When someone uses the phrase “cultural appropriation,” what they are really saying is “I was educated at a top college.”

Consider the Veblen quote, “Refined tastes, manners, habits of life are a useful evidence of gentility, because good breeding requires time, application and expense, and can therefore not be compassed by those whose time and energy are taken up with work.”

Only the affluent can afford to learn a strange vocabulary because ordinary people have real problems to worry about.”

This is by no means an excuse as to why men cannot and should not be more in touch with their feelings. It’s more of a way for me to feel more compassion for the lack of emotional connection that I, and I know a lot of others, have with their family members.

Many men, especially those who had to hustle and work their asses off for their family, didn’t have the time nor the energy to spend time with these ideas. They were too busy, and society didn’t value it. Only in college did I myself learn the importance of opening up and sharing my feelings.

Most men do not know the language of vulnerability. It’s hard to tell someone who doesn't speak French to be French and to communicate in French. Men must learn the language first. Having role models to educate them on this language is really important.

This is why vulnerability is hard. It’s only now that men are coming around to this concept. There are a lot of barriers and stigmas surrounding men’s vulnerability. But if you’re open with your emotions there's a wonderful place you can get to. One where you’ve developed a deeper connection with yourself. One where you’ve developed a deeper connection with others. And one where society is better off because of your appreciation and understanding of your own and others’ emotions.

We’re making progress

I think this all works kind of like a funnel. For every generation of men, we’re slowly chiseling away to make them better men. Ideally, in each new generation, we have the ability to live into our own new version of “being a man”.

Dada had to survive and he did. Papa had to provide for his family in a new country and he did. Now if I have a son, I can take this mentality and make them even more “of a man”.

Thanks for reading along friends,

Jay
