I loved the way the chain worked, the possibilities with it. Most of all, I loved the low fees. I knew they were essential for Sketchy Mfers—along with other mfer derivatives—to really thrive. I minted Based Mfers when they released and watched them grow. After much urging from the Sketchy Mfers community, I believe now is the time to "migrate" over to a home that allows for low-cost trading, on a stable and growing network that has proven itself as a hub for mfers and mfer-based projects.

I keep saying "migrate" in quotes because here’s how it’s going to work:

A snapshot has already been taken of all current Sketchy Mfers on its original Ethereum contract. The contract even points to the original artwork! It is Sketchy Mfers, just on Base.

Very soon here we are going to airdrop you a new Sketchy Mfer, on Base, that matches the exact OG one you held on the Ethereum network. You won’t need to burn anything or interact with Ethereum to get this new Sketchy Mfer. The "Based" is silent.

Q: Why aren’t you requiring a burn to claim the Base Sketchy Mfer?

A: Gas fees. Mfers don’t want to spend ETH to burn and claim—just look at the current market. Ethereum is a great home for art but a costly chain to interact with. We’re skipping the fees and sending it to you for free.

Q: What should I do with my OG Sketchy Mfer on Ethereum?

A: Whatever you want, mfer. Keep it, trade it, burn it, or send it to an mfer for fun. It’s yours forever.

Q: Should I keep both my Ethereum and Base Sketchy Mfers?

A: That’s up to you, mfer. The Ethereum one is a piece of history. The Base one is easier to trade. Some mfers might value holding both. Others might flip one and keep the other. Do what feels right.

Q: Does this migration mean the Ethereum Sketchy Mfers are worthless now?

A: Not at all. The Ethereum collection still exists and is part of mfer history. This is just another chapter. Some might see them as relics, others might trade them differently. The market will decide.

Q: Does this mean I’m rich now?

A: You’re mfers rich. As for actual value, the market decides. We made this move to keep Sketchy Mfers alive and tradable, not to speculate on price.

Q: Why not Solana? It’s cheap too!

A: Base is built on Ethereum for a reason: security, reputation, and ease of migration from the OG contract. It was the safest and simplest choice.

Q: Transparency, mfer! Did you buy up a bunch of Ethereum Sketchy Mfers before the airdrop?

A: Nah, that’s bad karma, mfer. You can check the blockchain for recent purchases before the snapshot. I do own a few OG Ethereum Sketchy Mfers from long ago—#583, #741, #1076, and #140—all held in jellopeas-vault.eth. I used to have more but gave many away for free well before the snapshot.

Q: Why airdrop for free, and why now?

A: Because we want this meme to live again—we don’t want the lore to die on-chain! High gas fees stifled it for too long. We know it will thrive on Base. When we created Sketchy Mfers, sodasoondae and I spent months on the artwork, and @zhougsoft really nailed the contract and its deployment. And with OpenSea’s new version rolling out, we thought it was the perfect time to plant this seed and see what grows.

Thank you for being here, mfer. For collecting your Sketchy Mfer and holding onto it this long with the care we always hoped for.

I can’t believe it. No more high gas fees. We’re ready for what Base has to offer us.

Stay tuned, mfers!

-@jellopeas, sodasoondae and @zhougsoft

Reminder: wait for the official airdrop announcement made in a separate Mirror post before interacting with anything.

After some tests, I came to find this line:

https://twitter.com/jellopeas/status/1566085039049154560?s=20&t=CZiJdQXL3v5d5ZNNzcFjow

Sartoshi’s 1/1s are (I believe) a mix of digital and physical drawings that were scanned. For “Right-click Dream,” I wanted to create something that would combine the qualities of the two, so I designed a digital pen that mimics the bleed and action of a physical one more than the stock options on Procreate. I also believe it’s possible Sartoshi had a certain way they held their pen while drawing—straight up-and-down at times. Whether unconscious or conscious, this way of drawing gives an unpredictable quality to the lines. This is something I first tried when creating the stick period. That “gm mfers” you see on the projector screen was not copied over—it was completely recreated by me. All down to the soft shading made from scanning an image, just as like in the original (my shading was a lot softer though to make sure it didn’t overpower the piece).

Using this pen and up-and-down drawing technique, I’ve been able to create work with a similar feel to Sartoshi. And though no one can exactly match their sense of humor drawn in such an off the cuff way, it’s fun to try.

“Right-click Dream” actually came to me in a dream. Kinda a half dream I had as I was waking up to unplug my phone and turn off the alarm. I thought wouldn’t it be interesting if Sartoshi’s dad in r u winning, son? was curious of NFTs himself. When I was a kid, my grandparents bought me my first Nintendo for Christmas. It was a big thing back then, and I have vivid memories of my grandfather sneaking into my room while I was asleep and playing Super Mario Bros. I wanted to create something similar with Sartoshi’s dad with NFTs. Something that also combined the raw look of ser and toadz nightz.

Every line in “Right-click Dream” means something. Dad’s head shape was something I pondered hard over. “Normal” head shapes didn’t interest me after seeing the whole lot of them from the 1/1s in the Mfers collection. I wanted something that clearly showed choice, so I went with one that was big and looked like it was pulling away from the scene. If you look carefully at the left leg it has a small foot on it pointing away, also suggesting to flee. Dad’s eyes were by far the hardest part of this piece. Their shape needed to show curiosity and choice with nothing more than pupils. Out of everything in Sartoshi’s work, I love thier eyes…especially the manic ones. The hand in the mouth added a bit more expression to Dad in a simple yet overt way. It’s also something I hadn’t seen him do, so I wanted him to do it. The shading does a few things: mimics the texture of scanning, puts the whole scene in a dream space, gives a sense of time, and also gives Dad some literal ground for him to stand on as he makes his decision. I played around with drafts where Son had a subtle smile on his face, as I’m sure we all would have one dreaming of a Punk. But in the end took it out to put more focus on Dad’s decision.

I hope you enjoy “Right-click Dream.” A big thank you to @MLeeJr and @MasterChanX for reaching out to me to create a piece for Rare Mfers. And to Sartoshi for their continued inspiration for my art and exploration of it.

What was the first song you heard that made you want to be a musician?

@_midnightmovies: Hi. My name is AJ. I am from Cleveland, OH! I have always loved performing. Before music, I was heavily involved with ballet and musical theater. Around 11-12, my Uncle took me to a Cramps concert and I became obsessed. I wanted to be in a band as the lead singer. The first album that I listened to with a bad ass female singer that can make the type of music that I was hearing from my favorite male leads, was Fever to Tell by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I used to sing the entire album in my garage. Karen O is the shit. I started to make music by accident. During the pandemic, my job was permanently shut down & I had plenty of time to either do nothing or work on something. That is when I wrote my first EP called I Don’t Know. Absolute newbie stuff, but I was proud of myself.

@jellopeas: How long have you been working on “AJC - The Album” for? What was your biggest inspiration while making it?

@_midnightmovies: I hadn’t thought about music NFTs until about a year ago. It seemed most people were interested in the artwork/profile picture projects, so I wasn’t sure anyone would really care about the music aspect. But, with encouragement from a friend, around February 2022, I decided to try it and see how it goes. AJC - The Album was easy to write. I won’t lie. My comfort zone is behind my acoustic guitar. But, I’ve been wanting to dive into producing my own beats/instrumentals due to the fact that I don’t really hear the sound in my head being created by other musicians. The next project I’m working on is taking much much longer, seeing that I’ve gained knowledge along the way with AJC. My biggest inspiration is seeing all of the artists online creating beautiful artwork that you wouldn’t have gotten to see otherwise. Through the internet and the NFT world, people like me have a chance to be seen and heard while also interacting and buying art for myself.

@jellopeas: What inspired you to release your first EP as NFTs? What advantages does having your music released this than say through a more traditional route like a record label.

@_midnightmovies: The number one best thing about me releasing an EP as an NFT is that I get to release it myself on my own terms. I don’t have to wait for someone at a record label to tell me I’m good enough. Those that follow me will hopefully see with each project that I’m getting better and better (hopefully). There’s something really cool about having a community that are all involved.

@jellopeas: Sartoshi, the creator of Mfers, and arguably the biggest meme NFT project out there, created the artwork for your album. Can you talk a bit about their art style and why you felt it was a perfect fit for your album?

@_midnightmovies: Sartoshi’s artwork with the mfers shows that big isn’t always better. That is what I really liked about the mfers and what I believe sets the community apart from others. There’s nothing glitzy or showy about it. It’s sweet, funny and subtle. Sometimes a simple idea can say so much… but also I’m just shit at drawing. I was lucky to have their talents as a part of the project. I wasn’t into the idea of having me on the album cover, but I’m glad we went that way. The drawings are so good. What we did is I sent over some photos of myself that were decent and Sartoshi did the damn thing.

@jellopeas: One of your tracks, “Riddle of Heaven” is CC0, meaning anyone can do whatever they want with it as if it’s their own. Can you talk about why you chose to do this?

@_midnightmovies: I see this as a collective way to create music. I may in the near future release a song I’m singing on & maybe another musician adds to it… That’s kind of what I picture. Or, some short film writer needs music for a score. Anything is possible really. I think it also makes the owner feel they are truly invested in a real way. That’s the other thing about music NFTs. It feels like those who support you - are also invested and directly involved in your success. In a way that you can physically see. To me as a music lover, that seems rewarding.

@jellopeas: What would you like to say to anyone wanting their release their music as an NFT?

@_midnightmovies: Release it… But, seriously write the music first. The music is the most important part of the entire process. Take your time. Not every song is going to be good - which is absolutely normal. Once you feel confident enough, there are plenty of avenues in the NFT world where you can display your art. Among them, one of them popped out at me. It had raw lines, an oval head, and big bug eyes:

mfers - early sketches

A few days later, I re-drew it myself for the first time:

mfer #2118 as the very first sketchy mfer

The response was overwhelming. Many mfers reached out and urged me to make my own collection. The mfers community was still growing at the time, and there were only a handful of derivatives back then, like Mfers Ahead and 3Dmfers. And to be honest, I was unsure I could reach the level of artistic realization that they had. So I quietly put the idea in the back of my mind and kept drawing. Kept playing around with the sketchy mfer. I tried new traits and posted them, and went back and refined them even more. It was a great thing to do on cold winter Sundays at a cafe. And it helped keep my ever so busy mind a little more quiet.

mfer #2118 sketchy mfer final version

Then, @zhoug0x reached out to me. He’d been watching sketchy mfers and said if I ever needed any help with it, to let him know. I had seen him around everywhere in the mfers Twittersphere. He was the unofficial coder for the mfers community, and eventually working his way up to becoming one of the signers for the @unofficialmfers treasury. He was passionate, involved, and kind. And I knew his message meant I needed to start realizing sketchy mfers beyond my iPad.

As an artist, everything for me is a question. And the question was: what if sartoshi chose this sketchy mfer from his early drawings instead on the one we know today? What would it look like? How would it feel? The question burned and quickly turned into desire. I had to know what it would look like for every single original mfer trait to be adapted to this sketchy mfer. Not just copy-and-pasted over, but fully redesigned from the ground up. So I decided: this is my mfer now, and I’m responsible for showing mfers — in some sort of alternate web3 reality way — what this sketchy mfer would look like if it were chosen.

So I put my head down and drew. Every so often I would hop onto Spaces, dm other mfers. The community was always there for me as I built with their feedback and encouragement — mfers take care of mfers.

In the middle of the project, I brought on @sodasoondae, an artist I admire not only for her sense of humor, but her personality. She’s talented, organized, and absolutely relentless when it comes to details. She saw behind the sketchy mfer, around every part of its boney body. She also has a strong sense of light, direction, and motion that added so much depth to each trait. Together, the process was always the same. We would design and simplify and distill and refine until each item was perfect. With every single trait we asked ourselves: is this want-able? We wouldn’t rest until they were. If you were to divide the amount of hours we put into the art as a whole by each line, every single stroke has about 2 hours of work inside it.

We made this sketchy mfer for you, and we wanted you to feel absolutely proud using it.

What’s beautiful about NFTs is the code becomes part of the art. There’s so much behind the curtain that @zhoug0x built. It’s easy to forget in NFTs nowadays, but your interaction with the contract is part of the art too. Speaking of his contract: it’s a beast. It has been battle tested to ensure smooth transactions, along with some magical developer wizardry to help lower gas fees, even upon batch mints. He also designed our website to ensure maximum security between our front end and the contract. Safety was a huge discussion when building sketchy mfers, and no one does it better than @zhoug0x.

Making an NFT collection is hard work, and I couldn’t of asked for a better team.

two months later..

We have so much to be thankful for. Shout out to sartoshi for allowing us to use one of his early sketches as the basis for this project. And countless other mfers who’ve helped put their eyes on the art and encouraged us along the way.

We hope you truly enjoy your sketchy mfers!

Made by, @jellopeas, @sodasoondae, and @zhoug0x
