I don't think red flag laws will always block mass shooters, but they are tailored to addressing dangerous individuals. On a plane reading the fascinating DOJ indictment of two Russian nationals who ran a front media property, Tenet Media. My 1st reaction is that this reminds me of shell games Russia played w/left-leaning outlets via Maffick Media, which at one point sued FB for slapping a Russian state media label on them (and lost). The alleged useful idiots there weren't so high-profile.

When I wrote in 2018 that “racism is a national security vulnerability,” this is what I meant.Look how many times the Russian talking points revealed in today’s DOJ indictment encourage focusing on race: “risk of job loss for white Americans”;”threat of crime from people of color” etc. Race is the most repeated framing.The whole world knows this country’s Achilles heel. And they can easily use it against us because the racism is already here, waiting to be deployed.

I've said it before but I get the impression that we are building up to something very big in terms of regulatory and legal crackdowns on people accused of subverting the information environment in the U.S. The establishment is reasserting control that it lost over the past decade a half. It makes me uneasy only saving grace is that most of their opponents are even less savory.

As regular readers of my casts know I’m not enamored with Elon Musk administration of Twitter but I do find the step of literally banning the platform in Brazil to be highly aggressive and unwarranted. In countries around the world where media is pressured or silent having social media is a necessary release valve and for over a decade Twitter has played that role. I couldn’t imagine if it was shut down in a place like Pakistan next where the media has been totally silenced lately (in fact they’re trying and failing to do that).

I hope they work out some compromise wherein Brazil’s laws are respected but people can return to tweeting once more
