It is essential for maintaining the integrity and security of the blockchain, as it ensures that all nodes in the network agree on the state of the blockchain and helps to prevent double-spending or other malicious attacks.</p><p>The consensus mechanism used in Shardeum is called &quot;Proof of Stake&quot; (PoS). In a PoS system, nodes, or &quot;validators,&quot; are selected to create new blocks and validate transactions based on the number of coins they hold and are willing to &quot;stake&quot; as collateral. This is in contrast to the more widely used Proof of Work (PoW) mechanism, where nodes compete to solve complex mathematical problems to create new blocks and validate transactions.</p><p>One of the key benefits of using PoS over PoW is its increased energy efficiency.
