Dear Grandpa 2140,

Today is Monday, February 13th, 2023. Entry number eleven.

I remember when I was a boy, devoid of any forms of electronic entertainment except for my Casio watch, which wasn't much fun after a few days.

There was my grandpa's Betamax video cassette player, which came with a motorcycle racing tape that I was obsessed with watching. I still remember the looping 24-note soundtrack that played endlessly as accompaniment to racers hugging the curves of the track.

That piece of technology came out in May of 1975! That was one of the highlights of my day back then, 30 minutes of staring at the TV entranced by the marvels of audio-visual innovation.

Another highlight of my days was hanging out with my friends at this abandoned oil-drum field close to our neighborhood, where there was plenty of dirt and sand, and simply piling the dirt into a dune for as high as we could, then running up the dune and sliding (or rolling) down it. Our mothers were not pleased upon our return from such adventures.

Comparing what boys did for fun back then to what they do today, the common theme has always been one word: high.

Back then, we wanted to pile the highest dirt/sand dune. As video games appeared and rapidly consumed our lives, we wanted to get the highest scores. As we grew up and had to bear more responsibility, we wanted to make the highest amount of money.

Naturally, we started keeping track of our all time highs. In web3, we are obsessed with those all time highs. They reminded us of that brief moment in time when we were on top of the mountain, on top of that highest sand dune that we built with our friends, only now those friends are scattered all around the world, many of whom we haven't met and don't really care or need to meet.

The highs that we share, however, elicit the same emotions as those days in our youth. Fleeting, worthy of reminiscing, unsure of whether we will ever return to them.

You were born in the late 21st century, grandpa. I wonder what it was like in your youth, with technology having another five decades to develop from where I am here to where you are there. I wonder what were the highs of your boyhood days, and whether, if you and I were both shot back in time to the 1980s when I was a boy, whether we'd be good friends, enjoying an afternoon of sand piling, then running up and rolling down our creations.

I smile as I think about that moment.

From my heart,

HC Li aka cryptobuddha

--

Image of the day: Midjourney /imagine prompt: three boys piling a sand dune high into the sky --v 4 --s 250

Action(s): Think about the highest highs of your youth, and compare them with those of your adulthood, then go back in time and do it again, whatever it was, and see how you feel before, during, and after reliving that highest moment.

Frequencies among people, whether they interact in real life, in the flesh, or via technology, all contributed to his creativity. Frequencies among himself and his world, his experiences, his histories, are the foundational bricks of his output.

This is the power of web3, the path on our current transition to a place where frequencies can and will be curated by those who are tapped in on them. In a sense, this phenomenon has been around from the start, since the proverbial "primordial soup" as eloquently described by Professor Richard Dawkins in the classic book The Selfish Gene. Every atom and subatomic particle moves at a frequency, and this coming together of human souls on a late Monday evening in Asia (for me), was just one infinitesimal moment of congregation of frequencies.

However, it was unique for me, and it was unique for all who were involved. Therefore, this unique moment will be shelved in our memory banks, and there's a visual and cryptographic proof of our participation, which we can then share will all who are interested.

From my heart,

HC Li aka cryptobuddha

--

Image of the day: Midjourney /imagine prompt: one hundred people sitting in their rooms across the globe, illustrated --v 4 --s 250

Action(s): Connect with someone online that you have never met in person.

Dear Grandpa 2140,

Today is Monday, February 6th, 2023. Entry number eight.

It looks like World War 3 is imminent as we build up to that ominous crescendo of this Fourth Turning. The Great Reset, as they call it, to clear the cluttered memory bank of humanity so that we can make room for the next centurial cycle.

Speaking of imminence, I dreamt of flying a kite in the dark of night, staring at it as it flapped against the wind, when its tip took a downward turn and began to dive toward me. I saw a flash of lightning, and raindrops began to fall. The kite became larger and larger as it dove closer and closer to me.

Then, I woke suddenly. It was just past 3am. I could not fall back asleep for the life of me, so I got up and decided to write to you.

You are at the end of your personal life cycle, Grandpa, which means you have survived the Great War of your lifetime. It is apparent that our species is still around, with only the path poking at the nerves of our imagination. I can only hope that your life has been fulfilling, and that you have had the luxury of a peaceful existence.

As a whole, we're not very good at reflecting from our past, and we are terrible at projecting the future. Yet many systems we've put in place, especially the financial ones, claim to make predictions about the soon-to-come and seduce us from our money.

Have you been seduced from your money, Grandpa? Or is money as I know it no longer exists in your world? How do you use NFTs, or their equivalents, in 2140? Blows my mind just thinking about it.

At least there will still be wind, and hopefully, there will still be kites flying in the sky, albeit not in darkness, with their journeys ending in soft landings instead of hard crashes.

From my heart,

HC Li aka cryptobuddha

--

Image of the day: Midjourney /imagine prompt: flying a kite in black sky --v 4 --s 250

Action(s): Think about how you have been seduced out of your money, and how you will not be fooled twice.

--

Dear Grandpa 2140, A (Semi) Daily Diary to a Grandpa living in 2140, the year when the Last Satoshi will be mined.

#deargrandpa2140 #cryptoscifi

Think of a collage with all photos and videos captured during a particular second in time.

Our minds are our wallets, and vice versa. Everything we own will be stored in the wallets of our minds, from digital to physical, all of our possessions will be digitized. Think of a plush teddy bear that accompanied us in our youth. That unique teddy bear is bound to us, and our memories with it are bound to it, along with everyone else who has had a similar bear, binding us to a community with shared joy.

There will be parties and conferences with all attendees decked out from head to toe with mosaics of their NFTs. Old friends who have never seen each other in person will for the first time, and find that they have so much ore in common, or different, from one another. A mere thought can generate a visual map of everyone who share the same NFTs as I do, and I can find them instantly.

Using the power of AI, communities will gather IRL or online to generate powerful shared experiences that result in soul-bound NFTs that last forever. A meditation session, a workout, or Friday night drinks at the local pub, combined with an AI comic, devil's advocate, or drinking game generator, will enhance such experiences to levels unimagined.

As we accumulate these shared moments, and along with them, associated emotions, combined with biological advancements, we will be able to tokenize the cells in our body, especially our neurons and memory cells, which can live years or decades. Imagine having ownership of a neuron token of your favorite person!

From my heart,

HC Li aka cryptobuddha

Word(s) of the day: NFTs, the future

Image of the day: Midjourney /imagine prompt: an old man with futuristic glasses and suit made of digital pictures, full body shot, illstrated style --v 4 --s 250

Action(s): Think about how you can enhance another person's NFT experience

Dear Grandpa 2140, A Daily Diary to a Grandpa living in 2140, the year when the Last Satoshi will be mined.

#deargrandpa2140 #cryptoscifi

It was an instant classic upon its release, and after at least a dozen views on my part, it still is. One line stood out to me: "we are now officially in the money-lending business, all right, son?" spoken by the lead mafia muscle man to his young son, after becoming the beneficiary of a large sum of money after a wild series of coincidences and deaths.

It's the tale of humanity, a tale as old as the tides of time. The few with a penchant for violence find themselves with immense power to instill fear unto those without. Such power then allows them to extort value, usually in the form of labor and/or money, with the promise of undue violence upon failure to comply.

Then, as the few gorge themselves with more and more value, they will then commoditize that value and trade it for more, until the despondent no longer has any value left for extortion, except for their lives. They become fearless, revolutions ensue, allowing for a sliver of value redistribution back to them, however, they quickly turn fearful once more, and the pendulum swings toward the violent once more.

In the mafia, all it takes are two men: The Boss and The Muscle. The Boss keeps the ledger, and The Muscle goes to remind, collect, and conducts violence if necessary.

In our modern civilized society, The Boss is the bank, and The Muscle are the credit scoring system, the courts, and the police. I punished myself with an extra 20-minute workout this morning. Show your worth with action, not words. It's fine to make mistakes, just don't let yourself off the hook when you do, even if you make the same mistake twice.

Wise words from my own Grandpa.

Today is the last day of The Year of The Tiger, and as the night turns to 0 o'clock, The Rabbit will set its feet onto the canvas of time as painted by the moon. They say that a rabbit's foot is a good luck charm, we can surely use some of that in this rendition of the rabbit's year.

I'm wondering that more than 100 years from now, in your time, whether you still celebrate age-old holidays like the Lunar New Year? I figure you do, though perhaps subtly differently from how we did it, and how we're doing it right now.

I think back to the days of my grandparents, when families were a lot larger and lived a lot closer to one another, any individual within the family could feel that sense of connection, that sense of being a part of a whole, and how that sense of connection has taken new twists and turns now.

Some of us lucky ones still get to enjoy that communal connection by bloodline, but for some others, that soil in which communities have grown has been eroding quickly over time.

However, as humans, we all have that innate desire to be physically present with other humans, no matter how much time we dedicate to connecting with humans through technological media.

Grandpa, I'd love to know who you have physically in your life. Is it a certain privilege in your time to even have the ability to connect with other humans, present both physically and spiritually in the same space? For some reason, I feel that this basic human commodity, the commodity of presence, will be lost at some point.

In any case, from here in 2023, wishing you a very happy Lunar Year of the Rabbit! Hoping that you still have that hop in your step, and that you're enjoying the company of those you love and cherish.

From my heart,

HC Li aka cryptobuddha

The juxtaposition of a bald, overweight "ghost" wrapped in festive red linen flying over a smoggy urban jungle brought a chuckle up my throat.

It was clear that Midjourney sourced its data from years ago, because Beijing's air quality has been magnificent for years now. How western-centric of this tool!

The prompt phrases of today were inspired by a meeting of friends last night at a local restaurant called Super Fly, which I found while researching for today's entry, was a film released in 1972 in the U.S. about a black drug dealer in Harlem, New York.

The story was about his plan to pull one last big deal and retire into the sunset, all the while trying to hide his intentions from the mob, facing certain death if his plan was exposed.

Nearly coincidentally, the film's release was just after the year 1971, which, as documented meticulously by the website called wtfhappenedin1971.com, was the starting point for the current economic state of hyperbolic debt.

Super Fly was visionary for his decision to make one last big drug deal before retiring, given the times. I sure hope he bought some gold with his stash, because cash quickly became trash in the years after 1972.

Life was hard. Inflation hit hard. Oil prices shot up. Unemployment shot up. Central banks (led by U.S. Fed Chairman Paul Volcker) raised rates to the heavens. This stemmed the inflationary tide, but looking back, it was like plugging fingers into the walls of a cracking dam.

I digress. How is the economy in 2140, Grandpa? Is it every bit as utopian as we Bitcoiners imagine it? Doubtful, I'm fairly certain. Have we managed to break ourselves free from the bondage of the hypocrisy of the natural centrifugation and centralization of power? How has "money" evolved to become in 2140? So many questions to explore.

From my heart,

HC Li aka cryptobuddha

How many different levels of identities do you have, Grandpa? I can see how we can go from where we are today to a place where each individual can have hundreds, if not thousands, of identities, in the year 2140.

Back in the days of my own grandpa, people pretty much had just a handful of identities and communities, mainly centered around their professions and families.

Now, the concept of family is exploding to areas we cannot imagine. Just take a look at our social media group chats. I have more than I can count, and most of them I don't remember how I got in there. The human mind can only process so many individual relationships, let alone groups.

You're a senior now, Grandpa, so do you just have a few good buddies that you spend most of your social hours with?

2022.01.09 Monday

If you're reading this, it means that you're alive today. Be thankful of that. Smile, and pinch your face, like The Joker. But please don't go out and kill anyone today, because that'll make it a midge harder to smile and pinch your face tomorrow, since you'll probably be thinking about what you did, depriving another sentient being of their ability to wake, smile, and pinch.

Today is January 9th, 2023. Which means that 738,039 days ago, we decided collectively to start counting our days using a standardized calendar. Upon a quick google search, I found that in 46 BC, or about 16,790 days before this current 738,039-day count, Julius Caesar implemented the Julian Calendar to unify time across the Roman Republic. The year before this implementation, known as the last year of confusion, was a whopping 445 days! Imagine that, 80 days more than the usual 365/366 days, how many more TikTok videos and Netflix shows can we enjoy with all that extra time!

1,628 years or so after the Julian Calendar, in the year 1,582, Pope Gregory VIII instituted the Gregorian Calendar, which we continue to use to this day, because the Julian Calendar was 11 minutes off from the official solar year, per year. This meant that by the time the Gregorian Calendar was instituted, the year was off by a whopping 11 minutes * 1,628 years = 17,908 minutes, or almost 12.5 days! This totally messed up all the major holidays, and that certainly was blasphemy, so the powers that be, namely The Pope, decided to change it.

So now, we are only off by 26 seconds per year, close enough. What a difference a Pope makes, right?

Coming back to the topic of the day. What does this mean for us? For one, it means that we humans can take a long fucking time to change something that we have gotten used to doing. 1,628 long years passed before we finally couldn't take it anymore and the most powerful person in the world decided to take the plunge.

Why is that the case? Because what we had before was good enough. Until it wasn't.

Which is great for those of us who don't want to wait 20 lifetimes to get started on whatever it is we are procrastinating on.

Unless we believe in reincarnation and are willing to pass our souls down 20 lives and let that guy or gal or them figure it out.

All it takes is a smile and a pinch, and heck, take 26 seconds for ourselves, and get to it.

*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

You need to sort out the characters and the riders of this game of life, otherwise, it’s a headless horse or elephant or what have you, just bumbling around aimlessly chasing the next task.

So, the basic strategy of communication is one sentence a day, to everyone that you can think of, that you care about. Communication needs to be proactively taken by you, and you can’t just wait for it to happen. You have to take the first step, because if you don’t, then you’ve become *passive.

*Then, don’t blame things on communication because you’re a part of the problem. You are the problem. And since other people are facts, you should not expect them to change or even think about trying to change them.

Keep true to your own communication to them, and they will eventually come around, or not, but it doesn’t hurt to try. You must be accepting of all results because other people are facts.

It’s like Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption, writing a letter a week to the School Board to get donations and funding for his prison library. The School Board first tries to satisfy him with a one-time donation of books, but he wasn’t satisfied. He then started writing two letters a week, and eventually received regular donations and funding, “just to shut him up.”

Persistence equals success, even if the success doesn’t match the initial expectation. The point is to keep going anyway.
