Guangzhou, known as Panyu in ancient times, has become one of China’s nine metropolises in the Qin and Han Dynasties. The site of Nanyue state palace office is located at the intersection of Zhongshan Fourth Road and Zhongshan fifth road in the center of the old urban area of Guangzhou. Literature records and archaeological research show that the site is the origin of Guangzhou and the same urban center since 2000.

Scientific and archaeological excavations

Quan Hong said: the real objects of tiles were found very early in Lingnan area. In the 33rd year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1907), a large number of pottery tiles were found in the construction of the Guangzhou Jiulong Railway in Dongshan Guigang, the eastern suburb of Guangzhou. Pan Liuru, a native of Nanhai, Guangdong Province, collected, collated and interpreted these “remnant tile worm books”, found “longevity”, “long live” and other text tiles, wrote “remnant tile of the Forbidden City of Nanyue”, “remnant tile text of the Forbidden City of Nanyue” and compiled them into “manuscript of Pan Liuru Nanyue tile”. He believes that the characters of these pottery tile characters are between the gradual change characteristics of Zhuan and Li, which is considered to be the period of Nanyue state. Pan Liuru and other gentlemen made textual research on the ancient tiles of South Vietnam, which is really exquisite. Although it is different from modern archaeology, it is a typical classical example of gold and stone. After all, it is the forerunner of archaeology for a hundred years. This is the earliest discovery of cultural relics of the Nanyue period underground, which has stimulated the family and country feelings of Guangdong literati and opened the prelude to the study of Nanyue culture and Lingnan culture.

In 1975, during the archaeological trial excavation of the Qin and Han Dynasty shipyard site on Zhongshan 4th Road, Guangzhou, rope pattern tube tiles and wide chord pattern plate tiles were unearthed on the shipway site layer (layer ⑨). In the accumulation layer (layer ⑧) of the early Western Han Dynasty covering the No. 1 slipway, the same shaped tube tiles and plate tiles were also found, as well as 16 tiles. The face pattern of the tile is cloud tree pattern, and its preparation method is the same as that of Qin tile found in Xianyang, Shaanxi Province. In Nanyue brick and stone walkway (layer ⑦ b), there are a large number of residual tiles and tiles on the pavement and the south side. This is the stratum formed after the destruction of buildings and walkways. In addition to large printed bricks, brick carving ridge decorations and other building materials, there are also “long live” character tiles.

The main pattern of the cloud pattern tile of the Qin and Han Dynasties unearthed in this excavation is cirrus cloud, which is separated by two straight lines and arranged in three or four parts. The “long live” character tile is completely consistent with that found in Dongshan. The accuracy of the textual research of tile discovered in 1907 is verified by the stratigraphy and typology of scientific archaeological excavation.

It is divided into three types according to structure, stroke and layout

At present, there are a large number of Nanyue “long live” character tiles found in Guangzhou, with rich changes in calligraphy and unique artistic charm. “Nanyue period is undoubtedly a period of development and prosperity of Lingnan tiles”.

It is understood that most of the characters of tile are “long live”, which is written in Yangwen, with seal script from right to left. The word “long live” can be divided into three types according to the structure, stroke and layout of the word: the first type has complex strokes, beautiful and even strokes, similar to turtle and snake body (see Figure 1), and some are iron line seal (see Figure 2). From the change of local strokes, there can be 14 different writing methods; The second style is square folded and broad. The “long live” character tile is decorated with arrow patterns, and the Seoul site in Chong’an, Fujian Province has also been unearthed. Dozens of “long live” tiles were found at the site of the Nanyue state palace office, either intact or damaged. Some can be seen to be made of the same model.

“Long live” character tiles are often found in other places. Although this kind of “long live” has the meaning of auspicious words, it is only unearthed in higher standard architectural sites. For example, Xi’an City, Shaanxi Province, Han Chang’an City site, “long live forever”, “long live Weiyang”, Baoji Yuyang Palace site, “long live Yuyang”, and Chongan County, Fujian Province, Han City site, “long live Changle”, “long live”. However, such a large number of single use of “long live” tile is extremely rare, such as the Nanyue Gongshu site in Guangzhou.
