Introduction.

ZetaChain is a decentralized and public blockchain network that aims to open the crypto and global financial ecosystem to anyone. It offers a unique solution to the problems of "cross-chain" and "multi-chain" by enabling omnichain, generic smart contracts, and messaging between any blockchain. This allows for a truly fluid, multi-chain crypto ecosystem, where users and developers can move between and appreciate the benefits of any blockchain: payments, DeFi, liquidity, games, art, social graphs, performance, security, privacy, and so on.

II. Key Features.

One of the key features of ZetaChain is its decentralized and public architecture, which is built on Cosmos SDK and Tendermint Consensus. These provide the foundation for its modular architecture and allow for the development of custom consensus protocols. ZetaChain is a Proof-of-Stake blockchain, where all transactions and activity on the platform are fully transparent, verifiable, and trust-minimized.

ZetaChain's nodes have observers that monitor transactions on every connected chain. Through its TSS architecture, the network can sign and verify transactions on every connected chain as a wallet can. By being able to read and write to connected chains in a secure, decentralized manner, these hyper-connected nodes provide a seamless omnichain environment for developers to build novel and powerful cross-chain applications on top of.

ZetaChain also supports omnichain message passing, which allows developers to pass messages (data + value) between chains and layers with simple function calls. This enables a new class of cross-chain applications that can seamlessly interact with other chains and layers.

Omnichain smart contracts are another key feature of ZetaChain, which can be deployed natively on the network and read/write to connected chains. This allows for a new paradigm of app development, enabling developers to build powerful cross-chain applications by simply implementing a few functions within their existing smart contracts.

Managed external assets is another important feature of ZetaChain, which allows the network and dApps built on top of it to manage assets and vaults of external connected chains. This allows assets on any chain to be managed just as a smart contract on a single chain can manage assets on its respective chain.

III. ZETA Coin.

ZetaChain's coin, ZETA, is used to pay the gas fees for ZetaChain smart contracts and to secure the PoS ZetaChain blockchain by bonding/staking/slashing. ZETA is also at the core of ZetaChain's cross-chain transfer, swaps, message delivery, and security. It is one of the first multi-chain coins that is natively issued across multiple chains and layers, which allows users to directly move the ZETA coin from any chain A to chain B using a one-way peg mechanism (i.e. burning X amount on chain A and then minting X amount on chain B).

IV. Comparison to Bridges.

ZetaChain is not a bridge, but a blockchain and interoperability smart contract and messaging platform that enables omnichain, generic smart contracts, and messaging between any blockchain. In contrast, traditional cross-chain bridges rely on varying, often centralized trust models that have a track record for being susceptible to exploits and hacks. ZetaChain's omnichain approach allows for a more secure and trust-minimized transfer of value across chains, as well as the ability to use the same smart contract on multiple chains. Additionally, ZetaChain enables cross-chain message passing and managed external assets, which are not possible with bridges.

V. Conclusion.

In summary, ZetaChain is a decentralized and public blockchain network that aims to open the crypto and global financial ecosystem to anyone. It is built on Cosmos SDK and Tendermint Consensus, which provide the foundation for its modular architecture and allow for the development of custom consensus protocols. It is a Proof-of-Stake blockchain that enables omnichain, generic smart contracts, and messaging between any blockchain, thus solving the problems of "cross-chain" and "multi-chain". It's supported by hyper-connected nodes, which monitor transactions on every connected chain and provide a seamless omnichain environment for developers to build novel and powerful cross-chain applications on top of. Additionally, ZetaChain has omnichain message passing and managed external assets. ZetaChain's coin, ZETA, is used to pay the gas fees for ZetaChain smart contracts and to secure the PoS ZetaChain blockchain by bonding/staking/slashing, and it's also at the core of ZetaChain's cross-chain transfer, swaps, message delivery, and security.

P.S.You can follow the project on Twitter and Discord, as well as on the official website.

The following sources were used to write the review article:

https://www.zetachain.com/whitepaper.pdf

https://www.zetachain.com/docs/
